For my book club I just finished reading 'The Nightingale', by Kristin Hannah. Coincidentally The Nightingale also takes place within the WWII years.
I liked it a lot. Fair warning: I SOBBED somewhere within the last 25% of the book. And, cried two other times.

Your mention of the Imperial War Museum novels reminded me of reading Emma Smith’s wartime memoir of her time working cargo barges on the Grand Union Canal, Maiden’s Trip. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you so much for your lovely engaging bookish vlogs!

Knowing that your book hauls leave me wanting everything, I promised myself I would just watch and take notes. Happily, I failed miserably. There are so many gems here, but I limited myself (for now) to Paula Sutton, Chloe Ashby, and Simon Barnes. Thank you, as always, for the temptations!

I read ”The chosen” by Elisabeth Lowry, and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in Thomas Hardy biography and literary work so I am looking forward to the Paula Byrne ’s book. I like the way she takes us into other famous writers ’s lives, I have read her jane Austen ’s biography as well.

What a great haul! I can't wait to check out many of these books. I just got a copy of Sister Novelists from my aunt for my birthday last month! It looks fascinating. I've been listening to the talks from the Persephone festival and was inspired to order Little Boy Lost since I've never read Marghanita Laski!

Many wonderful ideas! I do appreciate your children’s books recommendations. My grandkids are readers but not of the classics, sadly. I sent them the stunning interactive version of The Secret Garden. This looks like an excellent entry to Shakespeare.

Thank you for highlighting those Imperial War Museum wartime classics. Both my grandfather and my father were World War veterans, and I am always interested in reading books about the average person's experience during that time. Also, housing a museum dedicated to the history of 20th century warfare in a former lunatic asylum speaks volumes about the insanity of war. For an American point of view you might find "The Good War" by Studs Terkel to be of interest. The book is a series of interviews Mr. Terkel conducted with people who lived through World War II. Another good one from two women's perspective is Slacks and Calluses by Constance Bowman, which is an autobiographical account of two young schoolteachers who decided to use their summer vacation time to sign up to work on a B-24 production line in San Diego.
Always a sheer pleasure to listen to your recommendations and especially for the poetry book by Simon Armitage as I recently walked at Brimham rocks where there’s a monument carved with his words, on the moors! I highly recommend it if you have never been, since like me, you live locally, I believe!

I've recently read The Game of Hearts following your recommendation and thoroughly enjoyed it, so thank you for that. Then I read a biography of Charlotte Brontë by Claire Harman, I can't remember if you also recommended that book but again I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did buy a painted copy of Jane Eyre and I'm certain I did see that on your channel. I have a copy of Shakespeare by Judy Dench that I haven't started yet but I'm looking forward to that. 😢I just picked up a couple of hours ago the year of sitting dangerously my garden safari by Simon Barnes, I agree the premise to this book really engaged me and have already read a little, what a suprise to find it among your recommendations! I like his simple tips to enjoying / engaging in nature at the end of each entry, intriged to explore further. Thank u Miranda for more books on my TBR! I just stated to read “Rooms of Their Own” by Alex Johnson illustrated by James Oses. The text is very brief and short 1-2 pages, but the illustrations are just stunning and it is a perfect companion for a tired teacher brain. It features almost 60 authors and their writing room, from Allende to Hugo and everything between.
