@@blutaxtmalta very true. It's ok being the "tech guy" for your band, but everyone needs to know how their gear works and the basics of connecting to the tech and helping yourself. Being the only guy living in 2023 while the rest of the band is stuck in the 1970s can be incredibly frustrating, to say the least!
Scott, thank you for all that you do on this channel. You have become my "go-to" channel whenever I need to learn, purchase, or operate any gear for live setups. U RoK!
I have almost this exact same setup except with an xr18. I also use CAT boxes instead of stage snake (4 XLR over shielded ethercon). This setup allows me to use our own PA speakers or just send tails to FoH leaving our monitor mixes stable across both instances.
Just gotta tell you Scott i love your weaith of knowledge you share with us.I wish this was available before i found out just about everything the hard way!.
Dude, this was so helpful. I'm in a five piece cover band and we just started talking about IEM. Your explanations are clear and the organization is thru the roof. Thanks so much 🙏
You can run phantom power with it. The way you have it setup, you are giving FOH the control of Phantom Power. The outputs on the back of the S83way are Isolated, but the front is direct output. If you ever want to use phantom power from your end you would need to come from the direct out to the X32, but this would mean FOH no longer controls phantom power. These are designed this way on purpose so 2x 48V powers are not sent up the same cable.
Thanks for letting me know! And yeah I can have FOH send me Phantom with this setup. I found that out a few gigs ago. Which is nice! I have my little portable phantom power device if I’m doing an event where I am running sound.
@@ScottUhlMusic I am glad you figured it out. I am likely watching this video way in the future from when it was recorded. I am in the middle of fininalizing my IEM build, and I am consuming every video for every iem rig I can find, to pin point failures and pitfalls to try and avoid or alleviate them with my build. So thanks for being a pioneer for me, haha
Can you make a video showing you put together budget iem rack? You're a well of knowledge so I know me & many others would appreciate you thoughts on the topic!
Thanks! I’ll definitely do a video like that some time in the future! It’ll be a little while since I have a lot of other videos I need to do, but it’s on my list for sure 🤘
x32 in a giant rack (yes... I have a minivan I can lift it into)! But it does house wireless Iems for 7 band members (6 mono, 1 stereo, all Phenyx) and wired Iems for Drums and Bass. I do 3 subsnakes (stage left, stage right and drums) to keep things clean. Most gigs we do our own sound and hire an operator but for big gigs I bought a dedicated split.
Thanks for all the videos! Maybe not the best place to ask this, but I’d love to see a regularly updated “Gear I use and why” video. I look through your posts to pice it together but for someone like me who’s just finding you in (inset year) it would be cool to see a YearX Gear video. Just an idea!
So I have doing this stuff for bout 30 years. Perfect Logic and Engineering Scott. This is exactly the setup and logic I recommend. No matter how much van space you have you can always optimize space and weight. My current setup with 2 exceptions. For back track, just plug the X32 R usb into a computer . It is also an audio interface. Saves conversion, space and the need for other equipment, just send it out Aux 1-2 (or other aux out). Also, for an extra bang of weight and space savings....don't use analogue stage snake if you can afford it, get the SD16 or S16 or two SD8 even better. Again I liked the vid and forwarded the link as a model of ...this is how you do it.
Thanks Eric, I appreciate it! :) and yes I definitely would rather do usb out for the tracks. One band I do that in I plan to, and with the other one the other guy made the tracks and they are already on an iPad. But that is good advice! I’ve been looking at the SD16 and S16 and stuff like that. But I wouldn’t be able to “split” the signal when we need to send the sound to FOH right? Probably 85% of shows I have to bring speakers and provide sound, but for the live shows where they do have a FOH guy, how would the signal split to them if I used the SD16 or something like that? I would definitely upgrade if that was possible. Thanks again for the comment 🤘
@@ScottUhlMusic Hey man, , In my view, analog split is still the way to go, I feel the SD8/S16/SD16 over AES just as a stage snake can be useful. Just to make the stage more manageable but not as part of the split configuration. Its just a lighter less bulky stage snake. Doesn't help with the splitting the way I use it. You are right the split happening right there in the rack is pretty good. In the old days we used "SPLIT SNAKES" , if you think a 16 snake is a pain, try a split snake. Supposedly using the "Direct Out" feature of X-32 gets you a thru with less than .85 ms of latency so in theory we could use the X-32 outs as the split. Couple reasons I have not done that, 8 outs is not enough , and introducing an AES stage box adds more latency , not much but supposedly another .25 ms I think you are on the right track.
Thank you brother for all that you do. You’ve been my go to guy for any sound and in ear ideas for all the folks I’ve helped… Keep up the good work. 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
I'm trying to standardise my systems into 4U cases for travel and storage reasons. I have: - 4U case with; 3 G2 Sennheiser diversity receivers, ASP-2 Splitter (took forever to source one), a 2U rack drawer with; batteries + chargers, 2 handheld transmitters and 3 bodypacks. - 4U case with; XR18, HA8000, Furman M-10x E. I then have a 1U rack panel with a couple XLR outputs and powercon outputs. - 2U case with; x2 ULTRALINK MS8000 splitters. I then have x4 8 way xlr looms I was gonna try and get them all in the same case, but when I thought about the weight I did some calculations and found it wouldn't be worth it, so I keep them in all their separate cases.
Scott, Another awesome video as usual! I was looking for a splitter solution to FOH for larger venues. I saw your S8 solution in your previous video, but was going to be space challenged since I also use the XR18 in a 6U rack for mixing, IEM's, and my buddies back up POD pro. This is a fricken godsend! One ETH cable and a 16 channel snake to FOH and we're golden! AND...It also only costs a little more than half of the 2x S8 solution! Thanks so much!
You can eliminate the splitters and associated cabling if you use a Midas DN4816-O hooked up to the ultranet out put of the X18. you can use the p16/ ultranet banks on the X18 mixer to send whatever you want to FOH via the DN4816-O. You get the X18 XLR's out and an additional 16 XLR outs from the DN4816-O. Just did this, and replaced my splitters and associated fan outs. much cleaner and simpler now. mono ears = tears.
@@ScottUhlMusic I think the units are fairly new. They were pushed for the wing and stage connect I believe but will also pass 16 channels of Ultranet from the older Ultranet equipped mixers.
The router in this video, I kept separate, but I did end up getting this guy: ua-cam.com/video/9E5m-VYvoa0/v-deo.htmlsi=CRe5AyCMMciGBHl6 And my rack had spots on the front and back to rack gear 🤘
I was actually debating about doing that. Did you want one with one microphone that switches from going to FOH to inears only? Or were you interested in how to set one up as a separate mic?
Gotcha. I can do a dedicated video to that in the future. Thanks for the suggestion. If you haven’t seen this video on how to set up your IEM system and control your mix I would watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/XQjFhkQTVP8/v-deo.html And then setup a channel that has a microphone that just goes to your in ears but not to front of house. That’s how we do it. Input 15 and 16 do not go to front of house and just go to our ears. 15 is the talkback and 16 is the click track
I was wondering if you had considered replacing the 2x ART3 patch units with a single RU like the ART P12 or adding a shallow shelf (case hardware) and mounting these via velcro strips or cable ties? What about adding a single RU blank panel between the 2 ART S8's as a spacer (ease of accessing plugs) and to neatly add labels for the S8 above and below?
Awesome man, really good explanation, it's really helpful, so, I have a question, you mentioned the Phantom Power doesn't go through, so, how do you usually do with your band to use the OHs mics, thanks, best
Scott, I’ve seen racks that use a multi pin connector that the FOH uses to connect to your rack rather than individual XLRs. Have venues settled on a common multi pin configuration?
Hello from Finland and big thanks. Your videos have helped me a lot. This might be a simple question, but is there a reason not to use the 6,3 jack AUX outputs on x32 rack for I-E-M? I would like to be able to send the input signals (small band with 8 inputs) from the XLR outs to FOH when we are not using our own PA.
You definitely can use either of them, just make sure it’s configured properly on the routing 👍 And Finland is one of my favorite places I’ve ever been. My wife and I both loved it 🤘
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks. That settles it, I´m going for the x32 rack instead of a lot cheaper XR18. Idea behind this is that I can use the X32 without additional splitters and other stuff and buy those later when I get some more money.
Hey Scott, your videos are super helpful as I put together my rig - thank you! One question: what is the advantage of using the right angle xlr connectors in the outputs versus the straight xlr connectors, especially since they restrict access to the ports and electric plugs below?
It just depends on what works best for you. I don’t need access to those ports, so it cleaned it up a lot nicer. Probably didn’t need to do it, but it made stuff fit better
Thanks for sharing! I have a Midas MR18. I totally understand space concerns! You can possibly use a 8 space shallow rack which is taller but might be ok because of depth. This way the splitters would be easier to access, incase a wire fails. You would also be able to access your mixer easier too. I'm trying to create a fly rig that is carry on for the MR18.
HEY SCOTT IS BEEN A YEAR AND I KNOW YOU HAVE A PRESONUS MIXER AS IN EAR MONITOR CAN YOU LOAD A VIDEO HOW YOU GOT THIS IN YOUR RACK ALONG WITH THE BATTERY PACK YOU ARE USING?
I still have this setup actually because the one thing the personus is missing for me is midi which I need for my talkback. But it’s basically the same thing with this setup, just add the PreSonus instead of the mixer and I also have a WiFi rack router too 👍
Hey i am really new to these can you please explain to me, why do you use a splitter and separate mixer for front of house and iem , because you can get individual mixes for each aux outputs separate from the main mix..... by using the digital mixer right?? ... then what is the need for a splitter and separate mixers?? It would so nice if you would reply and explain. 😊
Another fantastic video Scott. Thank you! Quick cable question: At 14:05 you mention the cables from the back of the S8s into the XR32. Do you have a high quality recommendation for those? Short 2x8 1ft snakes or individual cables? Sorry if I missed this elsewhere. Thanks!
I am an IEM Vocalist virgin, if there's such a thing. I have the following and can't for the life of me, work out what connects to which or visa versa Anyway, SHURE PSM 1000, SHURE UR4S+ and a Yamaha MG10XU. Any chance you could either do a video showing how to cable or just explain in simple terms how to connect please? Thank you in advance
Researching setting one up. Here’s my question: instruments? Do you have your guitars, bass, keys, etc in the mix? If so how do you accomplish this at the splitter? How does the FOH get your instruments? The splitter is meant to take a mic level xlr input. But I think (correct me if I’m wrong) the DI box for your instrument and XLR out in amps is putting out an instrument level. Would the phantom power potentially harm the DI/Amp? As an example I have a Darkglass Microtubes Infiniti that has a DI and Fender Rumble Amp that has the same. I’m assuming it’s outputting instrument level. Even if I can get a mic level signal to the splitter I’m assuming the mixer can boost these back? Does it matter the FOH is getting all your instruments at mic level?
@@ScottUhlMusic does the splitter drop the incoming instrument level xlr to mic level? Do you need something to drop the level before going into the ART? Does the phantom power from the mixer cause any issues to the pedals or amp? These might be dumb questions. I also emailed Darkglass to ask them if the xlr output is at mic level. My guitarist uses an hx stomp so I’m guessing he’d need a DI box. Seems like those all drop to mic level.
Am I correct in understanding that the entire IEM-transmitter is only mounted "on the front" but not "on the back" of the rack? Doesn't it sag at the back then?
How have stage managers felt about having to take all inputs from one place? I do a lot of festival stages and the inputs are all across the front and back line. It seems it'd be a little cumbersome to move the xlr sources over to the rack from where'd theyd be for the other acts.
Definitely let them know ahead of time. But why would that be a problem? They almost always run into a snake of some sort, which is all in one place. Again, always communicate it before hand, but it’s usually better
How do you split the wireless mics? Do you plug the xlrs from the transmitter to the input on the splitter which goes to the rack and out to FOH or do you do something else to make it clean in the back? Make sense?😂
What's the reason you didn't use an ultranet splitter like the Midas dn4816-o? I'm building the same setup with an Xr18 and the Midas splitter looks like the perfect compact solution.
I did about a year after this video came out: A Device to SIMPLIFY Your IN-EAR MONITOR Setup - MIDAS 4816-O Splitter ua-cam.com/video/vhKOkp4Ives/v-deo.html
Hey Scott, great video - thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have a Soundcraft mixer I am using right now with the ART 3 way splitters, and the XLR inputs on that mixer are on the front... Do I see a 90 degree XLR connector lurking around inside (the back in your case, going into the Behringer)? What I am looking for is at least a decent quality, dependable patch cable (twenty of them actually) to go out of the Art splitter on the front, and into my mixer on the front. So a male to female XLR with 90 degrees ends on both so I can fit the rack case cover over them and leave them on/in all the time. Any recommendations? Thanks very much for any help you (or anyone else?) can provide!
Coincidentally I have some of your equipment as well. The phenyx pro, the rack, the kia sedan, I'm just missing the patience to plug in all that stuff.
Hi Scott, A few weeks ago you answered my question regarding needing a click track through bandhelper (ipad) and IEM mix from AUX using XR18. He was using an behringer P2. Your suggested getting a P1 so we did. Unfortunately, I hit a wall and can't figure out how I should be connecting it. Ant suggestions? I really appreciate your help.
Hey Scott. Love your channel. Would you be so kind as to do a review of the fairly new Phenyx PTG-11 Wireless Guitar System? Keep the great videos coming.
@ thanks man! To be honest, I don’t see the point of having built in preamp on these units? Doesn’t it make more sense to have a 1U digital mixer (no built in preamps) and a stage box with 16-24 or 32 xlr preamps (like behringer SD16) that can go on the floor next to the band? That can be conneted to the digital mixer with a single very light cat5 via AES50 procol? And a similar out for the out via 1 Ethernet cable or AES50 for the FOH?
Fantastic. I use an SD16 for most inputs behind the drummer, and use the 8 XLR outputs on it to send to a FOH engineer. He’s getting very hot levels. But it saves me having splitters.
What’s the weight for your set up? I have my xr18 and my 3 shure psm300 wireless into my gator case, but it is HEAVY. Thinking about separating the wireless units, so i can also use them in my yamaha analog mixer. Looking for ideas
I hope you can answer this question if I have a dual microphone receiver installed with two antennas in a rack set up, do you think it's okay to use a cable for 1 directional antenna and second antenna extension cable for omnidirectional.
Hmmm I haven’t thought of doing something like that. I would curious as to what would cause you to set it up like that. But I believe that would be fine
@ScottUhlMusic well I have UF-20R-JSS-20. 2 antennas in the back 1 microphone is on stage far and another one next to me MC using. I was thinking if I do one antenna directional to point at stage and one omnidirectional
Terrific video sir! Demystified the whole process. Scott (or anyone who sees this) able to advise...with an X32 and Behringer S16 digital snake, is it possible to set up 6 individual *stereo* personal monitor mixes, controlled by mixing station app?🎉
Yup, you just need to configure the outputs correctly on the s16. I haven’t personally done that so I don’t remember the steps for the outputs, but I know you get more outputs with it 👍
Hi Scott, hope you’re doing great, I see you use input 17 for backings tracks.. Is it possible to connect the xlr output of an audio interface directly to the art s8 or a di box is needed?
I use 13 tracks actually, but it can be whichever 👍 and as far as the Di question I actually have a video on that: ua-cam.com/video/9aS976GdBMI/v-deo.htmlsi=YLRbrHYYU83l0bbS
Hey Scott, do you have any vids on how to mix IEMs as a guitar player? Between the channel volumes, main bus volume and receiver volume I’m never sure where my levels should be for an optimal mix. For example, Should I start with my guitar at unity then adjust everything else around that? Or, Should my main bus volume be at unity and adjust everything from there? Thanks man. Love your vids!
Thanks Scott. I’ve spent my whole life playing guitar and using traditional monitors. Last year I joined a band and got handed an IEM receiver and the Xair app. Would really like to learn how to optimize my mix and overall experience. Would even like to figure how to use the built in effects on the X18. I don’t think anyone in the band knows how to get reverb on their vocals in the IEMs. Thanks!
Scott…question- with the ART S8 3 Way. What do you mean by “it doesnt pass phantom power through”? Can you elaborate on that? Also, How are you micing the overheads? Or what happens if you need to use a condenser mic with this set up? Thank you.
Normally you can enable phantom power on the x32 and power condenser mics like overheads. But the way I have this set up, it doesn’t work. If I need phantom I use this: ua-cam.com/video/cFqnYsloQc8/v-deo.html
Hey Scott - my band uses a zoom l-20r and a seismic audio 16 channel patch bay/ splitter in ear rig. In total the zoom and the patch bay are 6u. Would you have any reservations about putting a 1u furman and a 1u AT-3255 in the back of a 6u rack? In general any issues putting wireless in the back of a rack? I’m trying to save as much space and weight as possible.
So I have a question. I have a Hosa PDR 369 patch bay. So if I use all 8 inputs in my art S8 splitter plugging guitars, bass. All vox. Tracks etc. is the patch bay just more inputs???
Really good explanation, thanks Scott! I have the same opinion on the "I do not want me or anyone to have to be inside the rack itself or touch the mixer in or outputs. I worked with 2 signal splitters (Behringer ones, 1 input and 2 outputs) and for the aux outputs I worked with a simple D-type hole panel and Neutrik XLR-feed trough connectors. Any specific reason you went with those 2 ART boxes for that purpose?
Just for making it more compact. It’s easy to split the signal that way. We go into the input, and directly next to it is the output. Instead of having long tails hanging out or another 16 channels for outputs, it just seemed easier 👍
Happy Thanksgiving! Hoping you can help me. I created a layout for my Xr18 and I now want to use that same layout for my x32. Do i need to redo all the customization or can I load the layout? Thanks in advance!
I used it only once. The best DAW is the one that works best for you. Mine are Logic and Ableton personally, so that’s what I stick with. But I’ve heard many good things about Reaper
Because I need to be able to split the signal to go to FOH. If I’m just running sound by myself, I can get a digital one… and I still consider doing that to save me the headache. But unless you know of one that also splits the signal to FOH, I’ve gone with this method
Recently discovered your channel and subscribed; thank you for producing such clear and helpful content! My band is getting started with IEMs. We currently have an analog mixer that we take to some gigs because those venues (small bars, etc.) don’t really have decent equipment, and no sound guy. We’re now ready to move to a digital mixer. Since we won’t need splitters if we’re using our own mixer as the FOH system we were thinking it’d be smart to use two smaller rack cases rather than one big one - one with our mixer and IEM unit(s), power conditioner, etc., and a separate one with the splitters. Then when going to a smaller venue where we’re basically doing the FOH mixing we’d leave the splitter rack at home. When going to a venue with their own fully capable mixer and sound guy we’d brung both racks. Your thoughts on this approach?
Hey Scott, can i ask, what is the sound quality like with the cheaper iem system compared to the g4? I mean, just the sound, not amount of channels etc. I'm using the Shure psm200 and looking to upgrade. Would I need to get the Senn g4 to notice a difference, or would the Senn xsw be better compared to the psm200? Absolutely love your channel!
Man, I fell down a rabbit hole and watched about an hour's worth of your channel. Great work as always. Question for you, so the Art S8 because of the way you wired it won't allow you to send phantom power through the isolated outputs on the back side (inside of the rack) however to get the mics working your FOH would need to enable it on their end so the direct output can pass phantom back through the input channel. So for the X32 Rack do you still have phantom power enabled for the channels that need it and it doesn't cause any interference or anything to your IEMs cause they're isolated from the 48V the FOH is sending to your mics? I'm in a situation where sometimes I do my own live sound and sometimes we split off to FOH. In those situations by default I leave phantom on for my Drum Overhead and Hi Hat mics cause my bandmates plug into a Presonus Stagebox that goes to a Studiolive 32R via AVB/ethernet cable. But if I bring my rig out live, my better bet would be to just use an S8 for my 6 wireless mics in my rack and then carry a stagebox with a snake that has dual outputs or 2 tails. One tail can patch into my Presonus 16.8 NSB and the other can go to FOH for them to do whatever they wish.
Thanks for watching! I’ve still got my S8, and yes FOH needs to send phantom power to the channels that need it. But I also got the S16 now and it works great and I can add phantom power there 🤘
Hey Scott! Thanks to your extensive knowledge I'm saving up for our 1st IEM rack to play live with! I'm only a 2-piece, with myself singing, guitar direct-in and a drummer with a sample pad with backing tracks: Do you reckon the Behringer XR12 mixer will be sufficient enough for us both? We have a Roland studio capture 16 interface (rack-able) that we rehearse with but we're not sure whether we can have separate in-ear mixes with it? Cheers brother, you're the man!!
Yeah man that one would work for you for sure! Just count how many channels you need and how many mixes you are sending and make sure your mixer has that 👍
You can if you are running sound! That’s how we do it. But if there is a sound guy at the venue, they want control over the instruments separately on their system
Does anybody know why a single unit has two antennas in the back and a double deck unit that is like one unit in one has two antennas in the back is 1 and 1 for each side?
Hey dude, do you know if I can use the sennhieser combiner with psm300s. I know it's active and maaay not power the psm 300s But wonderingif it will still do the job. So hard to find info on that. I have 3 psm300s, one GW 4 IEM and one EW wireless guitar. Thanks!
Hey Scott - question for you. I’m running a Seismic audio 16 channel splitter, Zoom L20r and audio Technica ATW3000 for my bands in ear rig. I have been hearing “fluttering/rf” that is dynamic to my guitar playing and even with a vocal mic in testing. The audio sounds clear and full but the intermittent fluttering is awful. Did a full scan on the AT so it’s a clear channel. Could not trace the issue, until I tried moving the power supply’s from the AT3000 and Zoom from my Furman M-8 to a power strip about a foot outside from the rack. Can this really be my issue? Seems to have dramatically cut down on the flutter if not entirely. Does this make sense? Would a higher quality power conditioner help/ any suggestions?
@@ScottUhlMusic After a bit more testing, I was able to figure out that the rf / fluttering sound is from the zoom’s power supply/ the supply’s proximity to my rack. Moved the supply to a floor Furman conditioner and it goes away. If I throw the floor conditioner in the back of my rack on top of my snake it starts again. Not sure if it’s the cheap 12v adapter (not iec), the seismic splitter or if it’s proximity to the wireless is causing the issue. Funny enough, I was having similar issues with my smaller Zoom l-12 board, bought the l-20r and am having the same issue.
Hey Scott if I don't need that XLRs extensions in the back as you have, do you think is it possible to install the power conditioner in the back just to save some rack space?
Thanks for another great video. I'm stuck deciding between the Midas MR18 and Behringer X32. I know the X32 has more inputs and features that maybe I won't need, but I keep hearing that the Midas Pro Preamps are sooo much better. Do you have any comparison advice especially with those preamps? Thanks
GREAT video. Couple of dumb questions ... what are you plugging your acoustic guitar into that has an XLR out? Also, what is the drummer's "wired" setup? You mentioned that you send to a mixer. Is he then using headphones out from the mixer? Or some other setup?
Scott, what is your experience with a non shock-absorbant rack case after taking it on the road? I have the same setup as you have and I am a little bit concerned about the X32.
Shock protection is definitely always better than none. But even if I’m not touring, I’m still constantly moving my gear around and I’ve had that case for over 2 years now. I would prefer shock protection if I could, but it wouldn’t be as portable as I have it now
Hey, Scott, great video! Looking at doing a very similar setup, so I'm curious: How did you get around the problem with the ART not passing the phantom power you need for condenser mics? Thanks!
Hey Scott - my band is now using our zoom l-20r in to the AT 3000 series (thanks for the recommendation). The zoom has 6 separate monitor outs (1/4 inch trs with a switch on each monitor out to either use headphones or go out to wedges), but the AT 3000 unit only has xlr's. We want to use a stereo mix with the AT 3000. Am I right in thinking that I just need a 1/4 in trs to dual mono 1/4 in Y cable, with a 1/4 in to XLR adapter on each side, or is there a better option that has the 1/4 in to xlr conversion built in to the cable itself? Would you use the headphone or wedge switch on the Zoom L-20r (planning on headphone)? Thanks man! Your channel is the reason we're on ears and finally able to hear our playing.
Thanks! I’m glad to hear that :) and they do have the standard adapters you can find online for xlr to TRS or TS and stuff like that 👍 they are quite cheap too!
Hi there Scott, I hope you don't mind if I slide into your comment section to suggest some improvements to your system to improve on the cabling even though you never asked for it. (my apologies if you "do" mind 😅) I was thinking something along these lines: Front (from top to bottom considering a 6u rack) - empty (or maybe a blanking plate or grill or a racklight to replace the now missing lights from the furman unit) - empty (or maybe a blanking plate or grill so it doesn't look so empty) - Sennheiser EW300 iem - Behringer x32 Rack back (from top to bottom) - furman power conditioner - art 3-way microphone splitter - art 3-way microphone splitter - empty -empty - art p16 patchbay (instead of those 2 patchbay units) ---------------------------------------------- - So I was thinking to go with 1-foot xlr cables (without 90° bend) between all the xlr-inputs to the two S8 3-way splitters - two 1-foot xlr-cables to go from output 1-2 to your in-ear system - connect output 3-8 via xlr to the art p16 patchbay (flipped so the inputs are facing inwards) (input 11-16) that sits at the bottom of the backside with 1 foot cables - Then connect the TRS outputs 1-5 with a TRS to XLR (1 foot) to input 6-10 - Then, since the furman is at the top row and is deeper than the S8 3-way splitter, you should be able to plug in your sennheiser wall wart with no issue (i think) - You can then run the cable from the sennheiser Wall wart off to the side and into your IEM and do the same with the behringers power cable. - You could also run the ethernet cable off the side with the unused xlr ports of the patch-bay and if I'm not mistaken, you should even be able to velcro your router to the floor of your rack for transport in that area (maybe, worth a try). It might be a bit of extra cost for the cables and for the rack mountable patchbay but this way you have a very self-contained, "set up and forget", sturdy with no moving parts (unless the wall wart falls out of course...) rack that is easily accessible from the outside with no need to even stick your hands into the deep darkness of your rack...unless your wall wart falls out that is.....but we already did that joke so....oh yeah and to retrieve your router from the inside of your rack. So if I didn't miss a very crucial little detail that makes this entire idea unusable...this "might" improve your build...at least in my eyes but that is obviously up for you to decide. 🙂 Thanks for reading.
Hey I appreciate any suggestions! Even if not for me, for other people reading the comments might go “aha that helps a lot.” For me, I had a larger rack but it was very tough to fit into my sedan. So this setup that I have works well for me. However, I would love to do some of this stuff and have more stuff already connected in a bigger rack. Thanks for the comment!
Scott, if you ever reorganize your iem rack, would love a detailed video on how you wire the entire rack interior, specific cables/lengths used, component by component, cable management tips & labelling. keep up the great work..

Haha thanks :)
True but even better if the whole (or at least most of) band is like him 😉
@@blutaxtmalta very true. It's ok being the "tech guy" for your band, but everyone needs to know how their gear works and the basics of connecting to the tech and helping yourself. Being the only guy living in 2023 while the rest of the band is stuck in the 1970s can be incredibly frustrating, to say the least!
I've learnt sooooooooooo much from this channel...thanks very much

I have almost this exact same setup except with an xr18. I also use CAT boxes instead of stage snake (4 XLR over shielded ethercon). This setup allows me to use our own PA speakers or just send tails to FoH leaving our monitor mixes stable across both instances.
Just gotta tell you Scott i love your weaith of knowledge you share with us.I wish this was available before i found out just about everything the hard way!.

Dude, this was so helpful. I'm in a five piece cover band and we just started talking about IEM. Your explanations are clear and the organization is thru the roof. Thanks so much 🙏
Thanks! Glad it helped!
I am likely watching this video way in the future from when it was recorded. x32 in a giant rack (yes...
Cool Acoustic Guitar behind you!

That’s not a bad idea, thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks for the video! Very cool mini version! We're building a big larger system, but this was very useful for a potential smaller! Appreciate it!

I'm trying to standardise my systems into 4U cases for travel and storage reasons.
I have:
- 4U case with; 3 G2 Sennheiser diversity receivers, ASP-2 Splitter (took forever to source one), a 2U rack drawer with; batteries + chargers, 2 handheld transmitters and 3 bodypacks.
- 4U case with; XR18, HA8000, Furman M-10x E. I then have a 1U rack panel with a couple XLR outputs and powercon outputs.
- 2U case with; x2 ULTRALINK MS8000 splitters. I then have x4 8 way xlr looms
I was gonna try and get them all in the same case, but when I thought about the weight I did some calculations and found it wouldn't be worth it, so I keep them in all their separate cases.
Been really appreciating all the set up videos. Liked and Subscribed :)

Scott,
Another awesome video as usual!

Interesting…. I’ll have to look into that. Thanks!
@@ScottUhlMusic I think the units are fairly new. They were pushed for the wing and stage connect I believe but will also pass 16 channels of Ultranet from the older Ultranet equipped mixers.
Great suggestion! I'm looking into the DN4816 too. Seems like a cleaner easier setup and less expensive than 2 ART splitters.
@@dwhitney31 It is, especially when you figure in the additional patch cabling / fan out needed with traditional splitters.

Hey Scott- 2 questions: Where do you have your router? How did you secure the small Art inputs on the back of the rack (velcro?).
The router in this video, I kept separate, but I did end up getting this guy: ua-cam.com/video/9E5m-VYvoa0/v-deo.htmlsi=CRe5AyCMMciGBHl6

Can you do a tutorial on how to set up talkback mic for band plz
I was actually debating about doing that. Did you want one with one microphone that switches from going to FOH to inears only? Or were you interested in how to set one up as a separate mic?
@@ScottUhlMusic Im interested in how to set one up as a separate mic to talk only to the band members
Gotcha. I can do a dedicated video to that in the future. Thanks for the suggestion. If you haven’t seen this video on how to set up your IEM system and control your mix I would watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/XQjFhkQTVP8/v-deo.html
And then setup a channel that has a microphone that just goes to your in ears but not to front of house. That’s how we do it. Input 15 and 16 do not go to front of house and just go to our ears. 15 is the talkback and 16 is the click track

I use the presonus studio live 32R instead of the behringer. I find it really good
I’ve looked at the presonus ones, they seem really nice!
Art has a P12? I haven’t seen that. And if you can minimize the setup/spacing, that’s awesome!
Great system you have going here Scott wow!
Thanks! It works well for my needs 🤘
Could FOH just connect a computer to the X32 wifi to get their mix and eliminate all the splitting and snakes?
I’ve never seen it done that way personally
I wish I could really understand all this, choosing a set up and make it running.
Here’s my step by step guide: ua-cam.com/video/XQjFhkQTVP8/v-deo.html
Awesome man, really good explanation, it's really helpful, so, I have a question, you mentioned the Phantom Power doesn't go through, so, how do you usually do with your band to use the OHs mics, thanks, best

Scott, I’ve seen racks that use a multi pin connector that the FOH uses to connect to your rack rather than individual XLRs. Have venues settled on a common multi pin configuration?
@@greggroth7815 I would be curious on that as well
Hello from Finland and big thanks.
Nice! Yeah there is a game for figuring out convenience vs compact when putting this all together
But it’s basically the same thing with this setup, just add the PreSonus instead of the mixer and I also have a WiFi rack router too 👍
Excellent video!

Yes, so the musicians hear a different mix in their in ear monitors than what the audience hears at front of house 👍
@ why splitter is needed? Only 1 digital mixer can do it isn't it?
Another fantastic video Scott. Thank you! Quick cable question: At 14:05 you mention the cables from the back of the S8s into the XR32. Do you have a high quality recommendation for those? Short 2x8 1ft snakes or individual cables? Sorry if I missed this elsewhere. Thanks!

Hi, if you need help setting up your gear you can book a consultation on my website (link in the description)
I could see bypassing the ART and maybe going xlr into the mixer and using your typical 1/4 for front of house?
We go direct with our rigs, and yeah we go into the splitter and that’s what splits to FOH. And the FOH is able to boost it 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic does the splitter drop the incoming instrument level xlr to mic level? Do you need something to drop the level before going into the ART? Does the phantom power from the mixer cause any issues to the pedals or amp?
These might be dumb questions. I also emailed Darkglass to ask them if the xlr output is at mic level. My guitarist uses an hx stomp so I’m guessing he’d need a DI box. Seems like those all drop to mic level.
Lovee this mann!! Very informative
Glad you enjoyed!
Am I correct in understanding that the entire IEM-transmitter is only mounted "on the front" but not "on the back" of the rack? Doesn't it sag at the back then?
It doesn’t say since it’s on top of something else right below it 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks for the reply, man! So it’s wise to always got something underneath it?
How does the bass player plug into the system? Is he using an xlr out of an existing amp? Are you using just his dry signal?
I almost always play with musicians with direct rigs 👍 so direct box usually
what if you wanted to use the same mix for the entire band. Can you use one transmitter and then 5 body packs and still get stereo?
Yup 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks for the reply, that is awesome to know
How have stage managers felt about having to take all inputs from one place? I do a lot of festival stages and the inputs are all across the front and back line. It seems it'd be a little cumbersome to move the xlr sources over to the rack from where'd theyd be for the other acts.
Definitely let them know ahead of time. But why would that be a problem? They almost always run into a snake of some sort, which is all in one place. Again, always communicate it before hand, but it’s usually better
How do you split the wireless mics? Do you plug the xlrs from the transmitter to the input on the splitter which goes to the rack and out to FOH or do you do something else to make it clean in the back? Make sense?😂

Would you upgrade to the Behrinher WING rack?
It looks nice! I probably won’t, my 32 works well, but that Wing is great!
That said, many FOH engineers are very comfortable with mix station. In this case, I just give them an iPad to mix from the X 32 rack.

@@ScottUhlMusic I was afraid that was the answer lol
Question, is this setup possible with an analog mixer as well? As far as signal flow goes?
Yup 👍

I used it only once. The best DAW is the one that works best for you. Mine are Logic and Ableton personally, so that’s what I stick with. But I’ve heard many good things about Reaper
Why don't you use a digital connection from your snake to the behringer?
Definitely a smart idea!
Some people say with the REALLY cheap stuff there is a difference. But if you buy Shure or sennheiser or audio technica, it’s all gonna sound great 👍
How do you mix and route everything in X32 mix?
Here’s my setup: ua-cam.com/video/XQjFhkQTVP8/v-deo.html
Just count how many channels you need and how many mixes you are sending and make sure your mixer has that 👍
Hey scott. Maybe a dumb question. Im new to this stuff. Why not send the mains LR to the FOH to be mixed through the x32s wireless control?
You can if you are running sound! That’s how we do it. But if there is a sound guy at the venue, they want control over the instruments separately on their system
Does anybody know why a single unit has two antennas in the back and a double deck unit that is like one unit in one has two antennas in the back is 1 and 1 for each side?
It depends, a lot of them combine the two systems to the two antennas. But it just depends on the system
@@ScottUhlMusic so if I use a combiner does that mean I have four antennas
Four different signals sorry not antennas
Another rad, helpful video Scott! Any ballpark idea of how much this setup costs? (I realize the X32 Rack has considerably gone up during COVID)
Yeah, just the mixer and the splitter will cost about $1500 on average
@@ScottUhlMusic thx a bunch
Hey dude, do you know if I can use the sennhieser combiner with psm300s. I know it's active and maaay not power the psm 300s But wonderingif it will still do the job. So hard to find info on that. I have 3 psm300s, one GW 4 IEM and one EW wireless guitar. Thanks!
This commented on the wrong video because it loaded the next video. This was meant to be commented on the " 5 wireless mistakes" vid
Haha no worries. And most combiners or antennas are pretty agnostic, meaning they work with anything in the correct frequency band
Also kind of wondering if the way I have the power adapter for the Zoom bunched up and zip tied could cause any RF
That’s interesting for sure… I’m not sure I know what that could be. That’s very interesting that moving it away helped…
Yeah if you can for sure! It will make it longer, but cater this to whatever works best for you 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks man! I am trying to fit IEMs and wireless mics in all one 6U rack...let's see 😁
Thanks for another great video. I'm stuck deciding between the Midas MR18 and Behringer X32. I know the X32 has more inputs and features that maybe I won't need, but I keep hearing that the Midas Pro Preamps are sooo much better. Do you have any comparison advice especially with those preamps? Thanks
I had a friend tell me how much better the Midas preamps are. I just didn’t hear it. I love my x32 personally. It sounds great and is rock solid 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic After tons of recommendations both ways, I just bought them both so I'll find out in a couple of days. :)
GREAT video. Couple of dumb questions ... what are you plugging your acoustic guitar into that has an XLR out? Also, what is the drummer's "wired" setup? You mentioned that you send to a mixer. Is he then using headphones out from the mixer? Or some other setup?
Nevermind. You cover this in your 2nd IEM video. Direct box and the wired Behringer solution.
Yup yup 👍
Thanks!
I use this: ua-cam.com/video/cFqnYsloQc8/v-deo.html
@@ScottUhlMusic do you find that you lose any audio quality by using adapters?
@@ZOOMUSICPROD Not to my ears
Hi there Scott,
I hope you don't mind if I slide into your comment section to suggest some improvements to your system to improve on the cabling even though you never asked for it. (my apologies if you "do" mind 😅)
I was thinking something along these lines:
Front (from top to bottom considering a 6u rack)
- empty (or maybe a blanking plate or grill or a racklight to replace the now missing lights from the furman unit)
- empty (or maybe a blanking plate or grill so it doesn't look so empty)
- Sennheiser EW300 iem
- Behringer x32 Rack
back (from top to bottom)
- furman power conditioner
- art 3-way microphone splitter
- art 3-way microphone splitter
- empty
-empty
- art p16 patchbay (instead of those 2 patchbay units)
----------------------------------------------
- So I was thinking to go with 1-foot xlr cables (without 90° bend) between all the xlr-inputs to the two S8 3-way splitters
- two 1-foot xlr-cables to go from output 1-2 to your in-ear system
- connect output 3-8 via xlr to the art p16 patchbay (flipped so the inputs are facing inwards) (input 11-16) that sits at the bottom of the backside with 1 foot cables
- Then connect the TRS outputs 1-5 with a TRS to XLR (1 foot) to input 6-10
- Then, since the furman is at the top row and is deeper than the S8 3-way splitter, you should be able to plug in your sennheiser wall wart with no issue (i think)
- You can then run the cable from the sennheiser Wall wart off to the side and into your IEM and do the same with the behringers power cable.
Thanks for reading.
Hey I appreciate any suggestions! Even if not for me, for other people reading the comments might go “aha that helps a lot.”
For me, I had a larger rack but it was very tough to fit into my sedan. So this setup that I have works well for me. However, I would love to do some of this stuff and have more stuff already connected in a bigger rack. Thanks for the comment!
Scott, if you ever reorganize your iem rack, would love a detailed video on how you wire the entire rack interior, specific cables/lengths used, component by component,
cable management tips & labelling. keep up the great work..
Sorry if you covered this and I missed it but, do you take your in ear monitor rack/system with you for international gigs?
This rig I don’t, I have my xr18 when we travel. I would have to trim down this rack if we needed to travel with it for sure
