I don't understand why this song wasn't played live more often,it's brilliant. I still hope those guys will eventually get back together and release another album, btw.
Sometimes, musicians don't want to play songs that they think are too mellow, maybe... Who knows ? For me, this song and Dark Metter are two of the best songs he ever wrote... I heard the band play Dark Matter live once, at least.
I could hardly believe the news when I read they'll release new music haha, and couldn't be happier about it. In times when the radio was completely taken over by mediocre rap and pop "artists",Porcupine Tree will again be a breath of fresh air.
Maybe my top favourite piece by Porcupine Tree, along with Dark Matter. Very Pink Floyd-ish... even though Wilson kept telling he wasn't so influenced by them anymore, at the time... But Steven Wilson has been actually influenced by all the musicians he knows, and he knows so many different ones in so many different styles !!
@@user-hu3iy9gz5j : not very important if one is more influenced than another... It depends what you consider to be characteristic of Pink Floyd, a band that changed direction with almost every single album in their career (at least before Gilmour took over) ! The Sky Moves Sideways is definitely influenced by PF, indeed.... with an electronic/techno element additionally.
@@mauraine3415 : you should read again what I wrote... Coming from me, saying it's very influenced by PInk Floyd is a compliment. I never said it was *only* influenced by them nor that it wasn't personal at all. He gets elements from many different artists in many different genres... If you've got a certain level of musical culture (sorry if I do not sound modest here) It's inevitable for an old guy like me (just two years older than Steven actually !) who knows all those bands from different eras and genres to get most of Wilson's influences. He merges them, definitely and he has his own music of course, but he is inspired by many, many artists.. Unlike most musicians, he listened to tons and tons of music in his youth and still listens to many artists now and we can hear this or that in his music, from King Crimson to Abba, from Neu! to Sigur Ros and Oceansize, from techno/electro music (which I'm not too knowledgeable about but not totally ignorant either) to death metal... I could have as well mentioned Klaatu there, this cult band from Canada who slightly pastiched The Beatles sometimes in the late 70's but could also sound a bit like the early poppy Floyd (Syd Barrett was himself influenced heavily by the Beatles, anyway !). On another side, SW's changed I think, from the last interviews I've read, but he was really not very tolerant sometimes with certain artists at one point in his career, progressive rock artists of the 80's mainly, who had asked for nothing... He wasn't very humble either. Anyway, although he's not a plagiarist, he cannot deny certain influences... and he did deny the Floyd influence at one point, which was ridiculous. He never denied the King Crimson/Robert Fripp influence, as he's know him and worked with him on some No-man albums, and has worked for some KC remixes and remasters for over 20 years... I guess he was fed up with some comparisons at one point but although the Floyd is only one of his influences, it was a really big one circa 1992-2000. and I loved PT for it...

Two songs that summed up the UK Charlie Wuh lockdown, though separated by three decades, were This and Jonathan King's Everyone's Gone To The Moon. Both songs of desolation in their own way.
seriously? I like Pink, but go and have a listen to Anesthetize Live and tell me PF were every capable of writing or playing anything within a million miles of this. No chance.
@@Jmar1024ive listened Echoes si Many times, i agree with the comment, outside popularity i think pt it's not that far of pink Floyd, and wayy better than waters sole era and post waters by far
One of the most emotionally moving tunes I've ever heard. I absolutely love how it's deeply melancholy without being angsty at all.
One of Wilson's finest bits of melancholia.
My all time favourite song became more and more meaningful these days !
I dont see how but ok.

Me too. I will never forget the first time listening to it. "There was a war, but I must have won. Please take me with you." 😭

"The sky moves sideways" is much more PF-ish than this.

Is it just me or does it sound similar to U2 - October in some way?

Such a beautiful album. Influenced by the great Radiohead. So different and refreshing.
I didn't get that influence, the sound is so much more polished and the vocals very different.
