I heard this song for the first time on an internet radio station called aural moon about 10 years ago. The song impressed me so much I bought the In Absentia album in a heartbeat. Ended up buying all the Porcupine Tree albums and that of his "solo" career. Steven Wilson and those involved in his projects makes the kind of music that I searched for all my life. I do listen to other bands. But with Steven you are guaranteed quality material. This song will always be a favorite of mine. Because it introduced me to true musicianship.
and Aural Moon continues to play the best music...I fell in love with Porcupine Tree before i really knew who they were, and the genius that is Steven Wilson continues to play my mind all the time...indeed Gravity Eyelids is fluidity perfection, touches all the right things...
Except for a guy I vaguely knew at university introduced me to them; the rest of your story is exactly the same as mine. Some find the love of their lives; we found the musician of our lives ;)
Open your eyes now Hear me out before I lose my mind I've been waiting for hours Let the salt flow, feel my coil unwind Give me a smile please Count the calm and watch my breathing slow Winding me up tease Get inside my head and make it show Gravity eyelids come down Touching your oil skin Slipping hands down past your waist to find I've been waiting for hours Let the salt flow, feel my coil unwind Go to the edge swim Brown the eyes that sleep has rendered blind Gravity eyelids come down Come love so young with your gold arms so I wake her Here's a will that will glow in the dark
First heard this when I was falling asleep. "Open your eyes please" had reverse effect. Sorry, Steven. Then around 5:15, in my semi-dream state I was sent on the most otherworldly blastoff.
That Star-Wars-like keyboarding at 5:06-5:12 is just pure genius. I think it's never easy to exploit mere electronic soundings into such a beautiful melody. Kudos to Richard Barbieri, kudos to Steven Wilson and whomever had a hand in the song's composition.
Richard is uniquely talented at creating ambiance in a song. He is one of the most patient keyboard players I've ever heard. A very nice guy too, he and the rest of PT spent way too much of their time, after a gig at like 3 am, talking to some friends and I. He even graciously allowed my keyboard player to give him a hug. lol
@@strattubes I mean, this guy was a member of the band Japan, that was also known for their unique and experimental use of electronics in their music, so this isn't a surprise really.
This song threw me for a loop when I first listened to In Absentia. I knew to expect creepiness, but the ethereal choir, shuffling sounds and distorted piano created a sense of dread that I haven't experienced from any other piece of music before or since.
Such a bone-chilling song. Gives me the creeps every time. The worst part is I don't know whether to be severely freaked out by it, or a little turned on by it (his voice just soothes me in a weird way, which I think just makes it all worse).
The drum fill at 6:16 is wonderfull, i'd love to play it, and i'm sure if I learn it, it will never sounds like this... Gavin Harrison has something unique in his playing...
most probably in my Top10 of all SW 's fantastic and wonderful work . No , wait , in my Top5... wait , probably better even ... Love it , sends me through another universe ... falling into something a bit crazy, strange , uncanny, ominous, EERIE ,yet beautiful ... some addicting travel to SOMEWHERE ELSE ... arriving NOT here ;)
OMFG Steven Wilson is the fucking Leonhard Euler of music theory, Artists these days are not even an iota compared to what he is. This guy should have a billion views
This could possibly be PT best ever song. Spooky, atmospheric build up to a nasty riff which leads to a kind of sound overdrive. Unfortunately never seen it performed live.
@@joshturk8271 In Absentia and this song were made in 2002, after Leper Affinity (which is from the album Blackwater Park made in 2001). They both influence theirselves i guess
The chord progression doesn't need that much of death metal to it to sound insanely aggressive. One of the best musical pieces to do workout with. *****
Okay, so bear with me here. To me, this song is from the perspective of a potentially sadistic abductor. He has drugged a woman that he's taken captive, and she's starting to come around. The way the song builds is like her returning to consciousness. His lyrics indicate this as well. When she realizes where she is and what's happening, she sort of swoons back into semi-consciousness, but by this point he's touching her (those staccato guitar riffs and drum hits). And then when it gets heavy, he's doing what he wanted all along. The rising noise, the repeating cadences, are essentially her mind fragmenting as she is assaulted. I very obviously don't wish this on anyone, and I have no idea what the band was thinking when they wrote the song. But this is how it plays to me. it's deep, it's dark, and it's both sensual and violent.
No mate, that’s pretty spot on. Whole album has themes of rape (this one), necro (lips of ashes), and serial killers/ torture in general (blackest eyes, strip the soul, the creator had a mastertape). The rest of the tracks are more or less unrelated. The 2020 In Absentia documentary which is available for free on UA-cam is great and definitely worth a watch.
A Once Upon a Time character Snow White / Mary Margaret fan made music video for Gravity Eyelids will be uploaded today, and be out tomorrow, it's coming sir.
Mikael, the singer and lead guitarist from Opeth, is a very close friend with Steven Wilson, and Steven has produced some of their albums. For that, Opeth has a Steven Wilson-esque vibe sometimes
Sound like a lighter version of enslaved. I just never been able to get into these guys I mean I know Gavin Harrison's a great drummer but he's better off in King Crimson

You should try Opeth! Steven even contributed to some of their albums!

i have the exact same relation to Sound of Muzak :)
this band is sooooo under appreciated
This group resonates with a certain group of people…. Not sure why most people don’t understand but thank you 😃🇬🇧👍
5:12 This section wouldn't be out of place on the Blackwater Park album.
Open your eyes now
Hear me out before I lose my mind
I've been waiting for hours
Let the salt flow, feel my coil unwind
Give me a smile please
Count the calm and watch my breathing slow
Winding me up tease
Get inside my head and make it show
Gravity eyelids come down
Touching your oil skin
Slipping hands down past your waist to find
I've been waiting for hours
Let the salt flow, feel my coil unwind
Go to the edge swim
Brown the eyes that sleep has rendered blind
Gravity eyelids come down
Come love so young with your gold arms so I wake her
Here's a will that will glow in the dark
Wish* that will glow in the dark 👀
4:25 Riff straight from hell.
Love it so much
5:12 I just fucking love that part!
OMG YES!
the part directly after too
Alex Knight so listen to Opeth - the leper affinity
Noya Volovsky I have heard of that song, and yes I've heard of that part too, but to me this part is better.
I love this song, it's so dark, I imagine a city full of magic and horrors.
Fuck yea labaranth with david bowie

That riff that builds up from 4:01 onwards. Man alive!
Kropotkins Beard nice username
One of my favourite PT riffs
My favorite Porcupine Tree song.
La mejor banda de los últimos tiempos,un agrado para los oídos ,el mejor rock alternativo, excelente por siempre

This album is a pure masterpiece. Every album in the Harrison era is for me
Finally a Porcupine Tree song I can relate to.
Prosciutto_X you relate to a song about molestation?
WHAT
*_hol up_*
That’s a little suspicious
Officer right here
You listen to other superb prog and think it’s great and then you rethink what’s great when you hear this. Prog at its very best.
The riff in the middle is fooking sexy.
Easily my favourite PT song, and album.
5:15 OMG THAT PART MY GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And then the cool down 5:56 and that sweet ending with the background softly singing...chills
I get the CHILLS ...
Every time!

What's pathetic?
Nicky Peterson ;P
that fucking fill (6:14)
Absolute Eargasm!
Never even heard of them before. Just discovered them. Really liking them!

Baptiste DL Ah those were the days, A spliff then eyes shut listening to this song live.
halcyon289 sadly I have discovered this band too late to see them live
They haven't split up , they're taking a break to do other projects, they'll be back Baptiste . Peace.
halcyon289 Those kind of break are not good signs though, but I really hope that they will come back ! :)
I'm sure they will. The good news is that they haven't fallen out in any way.

Saw this band on their Deadwing album tour. They played this song and nailed it. I had no idea they were going to play it.

that beginning melody has a nine inch nails-fragile vibe. And I love it...
Steven Wilson is a Nine Inch Nails fan, so that may well be possible.
their vibe is very surreal/catchy
This sped up to 2 is actually like some trippy IDM track.
+WeIsDaTyrantz the fuck. how did u come up with that ! :P
true !
este tema es impresionante lo tiene todo
This was a great band. And I don't use the word "great" very often.
The guitar riff at 4:20 .....mindblowing
+Darryl R I'm losing my mind that riff is so insane
This riff is just lit as fuck
Appropriate time! 😎
BLAZE IT
british bands are the best
This could possibly be PT best ever song. Spooky, atmospheric build up to a nasty riff which leads to a kind of sound overdrive. Unfortunately never seen it performed live.
Was it done live on Anesthetize or was that Wedding Nails?
@@BrodyReynothat was wedding nails, but there is a pretty good live performance from 03 on UA-cam somewhere.
The intro couls be a good Silent hill's soundtrack
Light Mass Prayers. Signify (1996)
There is an Opeth song that has the same outro at the 5:12 mark to about 6:00, and its bothering the crap out of me that I cant figure it out!
+dgvtx82 Leper Affinity at 8:00
+dgvtx82 Face of Melinda?
Well, SW and MA are good friends and may have purposely did that.
Leper affinity for sure
Sounds right out of one of the SW solo albums. Reminds me of Index.
4:02 is the main riff of Open Car :D
take your time to praise our lord and savior Steven Wilson
Really dig this band
"Open car" on Deadwing reminds me of the guitar at 4:03
Yeah and Hatesong from Lightbulb Sun!
Am i the only one who at 5:15, starts hearing something that sounds like the outro to Opeth's Leper Affinity?
Yes, opeth got alot of their sound from porcupine tree I hear it all the time in their songs
@@joshturk8271 In Absentia and this song were made in 2002, after Leper Affinity (which is from the album Blackwater Park made in 2001). They both influence theirselves i guess
Steven Wilson produced Black Waterpark and several of Opeth’s other albums, hints the similarity in sound.

This song is jaw dropping
This sounds like it belongs to one of SW solo albums.
A Stargate SG -1/Stargate Atlantis fan made music video for Wedding Nails and Gravity Eyelids
I can do everything to this song ;) 💋💋💘💘🔥🔥🔥😌
Outro @6:41 is awesome
Mind=Blown
Awesome song! Especially the outro part
Ayur Bhatta same here man. every time. every song.
When i was younger the dang album cover used to scare tf outta me
Overwhelmingly good ♥♩♥♩♥♩♣

Sheer genius..
3:42 that part sounds like Silent Hill

slow sweet

Perfect for love making ❤ ABT
Try this. ;)

bianca this is a song literally about rape
LMAO
Everybody always says the same thing about some of enslaved work that they sound like a heavy version of Pink Floyd
Love the whole album but man deep cuts like this are better then trains or the sound of Musick my opinion
Gravity.
!!!
a ye
this song is such kreygasm

There'd be a trillion more instruments used if it was lol
Steven Wilson's solo albums never sound as bad-ass as 4:02
