I am SO glad you brought up the “flattering” comments - not only is it great for you to set your own personal boundary but also I’m grateful as someone who watches your videos that you won’t be letting these fly anymore. I have a similar body type to you, and seeing some of those statements you mentioned (re stripes/drop shoulders) can be super triggering, so I feel like you’re doing a service to your whole community too. Also I loved what you said about looking at yourself in those garments and being proud of what you’ve made and feeling good. That’s the most important thing and you should keep rocking the clothes that make YOU feel amazing.
Thank you for setting that boundary, which is not only for you, but for your community that likes to read comments! I'm typically a 3X, and I've been trying so so hard to let that word not be such an influence in my life anymore, especially in my knitting life. I'm definitely a process knitter, and I want to knit what makes me happy, not be worrying about what makes me look smaller. And I want to wear what makes me happy, too, whether it's handmade or store-bought!
Another wonderful podcast Leslie 😀. Your Tank Top is beautiful, and it will be on my list to make as soon as you release it. Those purl edges 🥳 Love It!!
Loved this episode. Such a thoughtful and well spoken boundary setting. Love and respect you so much! I am really excited for both of your upcoming designs. The berry pink/purple for the drop shoulder sweater is TO DIE FOR! Also, I love the purl ridges on the tank top for what it’s worth!
I enjoy your videos. You are a proficient knitter which is amazing. I really like the summer tank you designed. I am impressed that you can design and then knit it up! Keep up the good work!
I have not wanted to knit a tank until now!!! I’m a curvy woman and have never seen a pattern that fit the way some of my favorite tanks fit. I’ll definitely be waiting for this to come out!!
If you're knitting (or any type of "making") a garment for YOURSELF, no one should be allowed to tell you how YOU feel inside it. I love your boundary that you're setting. If they want to be rude, they can kick dirt. You always look good in something that you're proud of, even if not everyone thinks that way. You GLOW when you're proud of something you made. SOOO... great job on your accomplishments, even if you made 100 mistakes to get it completed. You did it! :)
Thank you for all your comments. Your tank you designed is really nice. I like the purl line you put in. Makes it look very polished. Looking forward to when the pattern comes out. Happy 4th!
Congrats on finishing your tank. Love the double bands and also the purl row along the upper edge. Looks lovely. You new design sounds incredible and the yarn is so pretty.
I love this tank top design! It fits so great and looks like such a great staple! Also I'm so proud of you and really respect you for setting those boundaries. Some people seem to think that if you present yourself online, that that gives them free reign to share opinions about your body. And it doesn't. They think they're being "helpful" but it's really just rude and unkind. I'm sorry people were saying things like that to you. ❤
You incredible human! Love the boundaries ❤ drop shoulders and stripes are my faaavorites and I absolutely love your knits!! You absolutely NAILED that tank top! Can’t wait for it to come out next year! And I’m excited for the open gauge drop shoulder dessiiiggnnnn! It’ll be so good! I’m already planning on knitting at least two of them with some of the other kits we have planned 😂
Your tank top design looks so finished and professional. I’ve never done the folded neck and armbands and now I really want to. I also enjoy that you talked about modifications you are thinking about making since it’s like a lesson in designing. Thanks!
With you 100% for setting boundaries. What a great example you are for other women! I really love your new tank design. I don't like the way my ribbing stitches look so your pattern will be perfect for me. Can't wait but will wait patiently ;-)
Such a cute tank! Great job designing it. Love the details. You have inspired me to search Ravelry for a tank for hot summer days. I know you are not far into the new knit but WOW such a perfect beautiful colorway.
👏🏼Yes for setting that boundary! It’s a good boundary for our knitting community (and world in general). The projects we make are amazing and we should celebrate how they make us feel and how proud we are of them. Also I looove your tank design. I live in those Old Navy tanks in the summer and this is spot on.
Omg GURL, yessss 👏👏👏 I absolutely love that you spoke up about the word “flattering” and how it can be a hurtful and kinda gross word to use. I’m so with you on that. Your tank is freaking ✨stunning✨ I NEED
I’m glad you have set a boundary with how you want to be spoken to. I don’t understand what would be wrong with a drop shoulder… like this super confuses me that people had issues with that. I know stripes were demonized in the fashion world for not looking good on anyone who isn’t teeny tiny. I vividly remember crying in the bathroom as my overweight third grade self to being teased about the striped shirt. Some people are garbage humans. I love your content. ❤
Go you for drawing a firm boundary! That can be difficult at any time, let alone in a public forum. You did a great job, and I cheered at the end of that segment. *fistbump*
My first thoughts watching this video is how great your tank looks - especially how you did the edges. I don’t wear a lot of tanks in that shape but may reconsider so I can make this tank for myself when it’s released.
Love the tank top design. Impressive! I can’t wait to see the pattern. I completely support your thought on people commenting on body image. It needs to stop. Thanks for sharing your content.
I can tell you from experience that merino silk isn’t bad in the heat, although I’m dealing with 90s plus humidity rather than 100 plus and dry. Haven’t worn cashmere for tanks yet though.
I love your tank top! I like the purl edge look. Without the purl edge looks great as well. I can’t wait for your pattern to come out. Thanks for sharing all your knitted projects!
Wow your discussion on body image is really hitting a nerve. I'm tearing up thinking about how much I've struggled with my own body image issues, especially lately being postpartum and seeing how my body has changed permanently. It's been so difficult that I actually stopped crocheting and knitting garments for myself because I just don't know how things are going to look on me. I really love your podcast and I love how you, as you point out, don't talk about fit and if pieces are flattering or not. Just last week actually I was flipping through Janine Myska's "knitnknots" summer crochet pattern book and she has a really beautiful letter to the reader about size inclusiveness and it completely inspired me to just stop worrying and start creating again. So I'm currently crocheting a fitted tank top and knitting a peplum tank top 😁 I am SO thrilled for you for setting up that boundary. You're such a good role model! On a side note your knitting is just incredible. I saw the two striped sweater plans and I was like "yup that sounds about right" lol. I love that you know what you like. I appreciate you so much 😊 From a 38 year old mom of two girls, 2 years old and 3 months old. I hope I can be a good example and show them that they can wear whatever they want, whatever they are comfortable in ❤
Of course I respect your boundary. I do want to bring another facet to this matter. You are the second podcaster who I watch to raise this issue about the word flattering. Therefore, I learned from the first person that this word has a relationship to body image. I’m an older person, and I think this may be a generational interpretation. While I’ve stopped using this term period, I always meant it about the garment or color etc. and not the person. I see your point however, and realize that ultimately it has to come back to the person and how the garment relates to their body. I also can’t believe how rude some can be to actually tell you they don’t like something that you not only knit, but took the time to share here. I hope others respect your boundary and are open to hearing you, even if it doesn’t resonate as body image related to them. Love your podcast and your makes! That tank top you are wearing is amazing. The finishes are so well done.
I have to tell you, halfway through the year, my knitting journal is the best I have ever kept. All of your journal content at the beginning of the year helped me to revamp how I set up my journal and it is working so well! Also, your tank top looks great. I really like the edging treatments you have done & hearing a bit about your process in designing is really interesting.
I thought twice before laying down this comment, so hear me out. Leslie -- please charge high for your tank design. Think of the money people spend on yarn, and consider that buyers of the pattern will likely knit more than one. There's nothing on Rav with the same silhouette and level of polish, trust me, I've seen all of them. Think of the money you invested in engineering school. I would happily pay a lot for the pattern, and I'll probably do 5 of them. My perfect high-neck tank search has been exhausting and I finally had to self-draft. I love yours. Hurry up.
Your tank design is so lovely! I look forward to seeing where you go with it! I'll be first in line to buy the pattern! Thanks for the lovely podcast and for sharing your progress! ❤
I'm so sorry you received such comments. You put so much work, time and effort into your projects and content. Those sort of comments are not acceptable in any scenario. It's really sad that society has taught that it is acceptable to comment on other peoples bodies. You are amazing for standing up for yourself. Yes, Leslie
I love the tank top, love the purl row detail,it looks so professional and clean..can’t wait to knit this, when can we purchase the pattern please . I would like to knit one for my daughter as a Christmas pressie? 🧶x
Just gotta say I love the colour of the tank you wear on this episode. Even in the world of colour analysis they say if there is an item of clothing you love and it brings you joy wear it anyway. If they can get behind wearing something because you love it and it makes you happy then no one should be telling anyone what they should wear based on their own personal opinion on style. Side note there is a point to releasing your tank pattern sooner. Those of us in Australia could buy it first and have it made for our summer/autumn. Who know maybe I’m just so used to knitting what I want when I want so I’ll knit cardigans and things even in Summer otherwise I’d never get anything finished. Either way it will be interesting to see how you go through the process of deciding which options you prefer and those that you’ll still include in the final pattern.
Thank you! This green is one of my soft summer colors, but I totally agree with you! If you love a color, wear it anyway! I’ve been doing this with some reds and other non-summer colors. Definitely a true point about summer in the southern hemisphere!
Love love love your design Leslie! I know you knit it based on those classic, everyday tanks. I have a closet full of those to wear under pieces AND on their own… Cant wait to knit (or test!?🤓) this in the future. Thanks for another great podcast, and your positive presence here on UA-cam!
People still having the audacity to go around commenting on other's bodies is WILD to me. FYI, youtube has an option for you to block comments that contain certain words if you want to go that route! I'm also midsized and have avoided stripes most of my life, but your two stripped sweaters have me wanting a stripes-era moment so I've been planning to make myself a stripey sweater. Thanks for the inspiration!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 thanks for calling out the “flattering” comment. It’s such a backhanded way to critique the way somebody looks. Let’s just assume that when knitters share something they worked so hard to make, they like how it looks and do not need your input on that.
UGH. No one should ever comment about something being unflattering or not looking good. That's awful. Are horizontal stripes great for me? No. Do I care? No! If I did care, I wouldn't wear them. I do like hearing about colors or shapes that look great on me because then I can seek out more things in that color or style. Wear whatever makes you feel good. And if it's something you made, show that off! Knitting can be hit or miss for so many reasons, like the yarn not being right for the pattern or the gauge being off. We should be proud of anything we knit that we love.
I needed the go..gle translator. Unfortunally, I was not wrong. I am interested in your knitting pieces, not your body. Why are people judging your body??😢
I think you are strong regarding the boundary you just set. It's not easy sometimes to stand up for what you need, and I appreciate you doing so.
♥️♥️♥️

Stripes are FUN and drop shoulders can be so cozy! Wearing clothes that you made is fabulous! Keep on doing what you love.
Your tank looks great too!
Thank you so much!!

Yes girl! The end goal of clothing isn’t looking smaller! Wear whatever you love! The tank is amazing btw! Obsessed!
I love your tank! The details are perfect and make it special. The stitch definition with that luxe yarn is perfection! 😊
Thank you! 😊
Another wonderful podcast Leslie 😀. Your Tank Top is beautiful, and it will be on my list to make as soon as you release it. Those purl edges 🥳 Love It!!

Great tank top-love the construction and color!
I can't wait for your Tank Top pattern launch! So excited to get this on my needles! The detail on the collar is gorgeous.

Way to stand up for yourself! You’re doing a great job putting yourself out there. Don’t let others discourage you. Boundaries are a good thing!!!

The tank top came out SO GOOD! I love it, and I love the purl detail around the neckline! Excited for the tester call 😄
LOVE the purl detail!
Thanks, Bailey!!

Your tank is so stylish with excellent trims. I’m looking forward to purchasing the pattern.
I've always hated the word "flattering." You go girl!

I am so excited for your new design! I've always wanted to knit a drop shoulder pattern and have yet to decide on one, I'd prefer it to be yours!!!
You haven't knit any drop shoulders????! OMG - hopefully you'll like this one 😅😅😅
Love that you knit for yourself ❤
That tank is awesome 👍❤
Thank you so much!!

I currently have a Farnham Tee on the needles because you raved about it so much 🧶💜
I’m wearing mine right now! It’s a great pattern! ♥️♥️
