- ALL MY VIDEOS ARE IN 1080p HI DEF so check that out
car is a 70 chevelle with a 454
just a video going over the fuel pump in case someone out there is having problems or just doing research
Thanks for the video, putting grease on the rod to hold it up was key to making this job very easy! In my case I was able to install the plug after I installed the fuel pump. I also strongly recommend to fit a new rubber fuel line to the bottom of the fuel pump before installing the fuel pump in place. It’s very tight quarters when changing the pump under the car and pre installing the rubber fuel line will save you a lot of grief! Thanks again for the video, short and to the point!
I watched your video ,and with enough confidence, I swap out mine but with a little cursing and having a temper tantrum, I got it done...... thank you for this video.
Grease on rod to hold it in place was smart. Thanks
Thanks for your help with this. I didn't realize there was a rod plug. Now i just wish i had open space to work on the stupid thing... (454 in a 23' sea ray isnt the easiest thing to work on but it sure is fun to drive!)
Right there with you on a 26 foot Sea Ray!
OK I'm going to try that thank you for the fast reply I appreciate it alot
You better get a body guard. Not allowed to deviate from the Pharma guidelines. Thank you for being real.
Don't smear grease all over the side, just put a dab on the end to stick it to the cam.
I see your pump has a spring under the lever and that it's a precision manufacturer/brand. I have a 78 Coupe deVille and I too got a fuel pump from precision from O'REILLY but mine didn't come with that spring. I have replaced it twice because it starts to make a tapping ticking sound like a lifter noise but it's the fuel pump because soon as I replaced it with another the sound is no longer present. And unfortunately it's making that sound again. This time I ordered a fuel pump that has that spring under the arm no I'm hoping this will resolve it. In your opinion would the lack of no spring be the cause for a tapping/ticking noise?
Okay motor needs to be @ TDC and their a bolt 7/16 in the lower front of the block remove short one use longer bolt to hold the rod up .
My Corvette BBC doesn't have the hole to thread in the 7/16 bolt
That’s only on a small block. Holes are blind on a big block.
I picked up a truck for the fresh 396 BBC to use in my Chevelle
I’m pulling the motor - haven’t pulled one before
Question for you - I want to leave the 4 speed in it and remove engine only. Can I pull it by just removing bell housing and converter bolts? Thank you in advance!
Had to get grease on your hands bless your little heart it's a greasy job 😂
No patience for the job
No patience
Does the rod have to come out? Do I have to unscrew that cap? I’m replacing it in a running and working engine .
no.. just put balance on TDC At 0 so rod pushes in
Chris Craft thanks for the quick reply. Yea just lift up the rod with something right ?
yes it’s Easy
Probably a little late on a reply but there is a bolt hole on the front of the block right where your pushrod is at. If you remove the bolt from it you can take one of the bolts from your old fuel pump while leaving the other bolt in pump tight and snug it up against the rod, not too tight and it will hold the rod in place.
Travis Carr thanks !
Hey Chris, what size is that Allen wrench you used to install the plug on the bottom? Is it a square hole, that's what mine is... appreciate the help.
wich one is the retiern line?
can i plug small tube ?
1/4 is vapor return and YES you can just cap it off
edelbrock says not to exceed 6.5 on 650 cfm carb will 7 psi tech be too much or whats half inch...?
are you running electric fuel pump? or getting 7psi on mechanical? too much pressure can bypass needle and seats..
Just swapped out the oe style pump on my 396 the other day and couldn't get the plug out on the bottom but thankfully I was able to flip the key once or twice and get the push rod in the sweet spot and pushed it up and got the mech lever for the pump under it and with a little pressure pushed up and bolted the pump into place
I'm having a problem with my fuel pump how much resistance is on the mechanical fuel pump ? and my fuel pump isn't pumping anything into my fuel filter when I push the gas but when I try to start my car it fills up my filter .... any clue ? pls lmk thank you
also the pump is new (2 months)
Mike Hernandez all you can do is put a gauge and check the fuel pressure
The mechanical fuel pump isn't supposed to respond to your pedal input. That is a process that is triggered by the turn of the engine to deliver fuel to the carburetor. The carburetor converts your pedal input into fuel shots to the engine.
Where did you get the engine lift plate.
I don’t know what that is.. I don’t think I have a lift plate
