After Burt died I had to look up my favorite song and didn’t know this one. Always loved Linda and was trying to sing along when My husband asked what I was screaming about😂 What an amazing voice!
I remembered this performance from ages ago and it compelled me recently to look for it. Having found it, mostly due to the instrument, the glass harmonica, I am amazed how gorgeous it sounds, especially with the incredible solo by Marsallis, also her gorgeous vocal and that lovely Klimt background. Add to this those incredible back up singers and the whole level of performance from every one involved. An everlasting masterpiece.
What a cruel thing her voice was silenced by Parkinson's. Linda could sing ANYTHING, and did so with such impeccability. She was one of THE voices of the 20th century. I admire her more now than I ever did...and I always did.
Yes it was cruel. But Linda can take solace in the fact that she had an incredible long career. She was recognized for her superior voice and talent and got the praise and credit she greatly deserved. Also, she knows she is a living legend.

I miss her powerful voice on stage, is the reason why I have to visit her videos now and then, to refresh my memory of such a talent......there will never be another Linda R onstage voice out there again. The version of this song is as close to being better then version by Dionne Warwick, which in itself is also mind blowing....We love and miss you Linda.....
I've heard several versions of this song going right back to Dusty Springfield and even though the song stands on its own merits. Linda knocks it out of the park. Her voice is heart wrenching and the arrangement is spectacular.
Actually I love all the versions by Cilla, Dusty, Dionne, Linda and also the one by Olivia Newton John. But one of the most powerful is from Holland by Dutch singer Trijntje Oosterhuis: ua-cam.com/video/kvMSKWVjN2I/v-deo.html
Boy , if she doesn't bring a tear to your eye, you just don't have soul! Oh my God, what a singer whose incredible angelic voice exudes passion and emotions that can take you to some place otherworldly.
Besides showing off her incredible voice I like how she turns her attention to the sax player and then acts out how someone, like a child, does when they are begging for something. Helps her to own this one.
Have you heard Cilla Black? She does the British version of this. It also. causes me to get chills! Her version of "What's it All About Alfie" also caused me to break into chill bumps.
Kevin Matthews My feeling exactly--- She hits that line with just pure POWER and natural, effortless. I didn't know that Linda had Parkinson's...heartbreaking.
Since my previous post I've also listened to Cilla Black's version of this song and it is also excellent. Cilla's song came out in 1964, two months after Dionne Warwick's. But once Linda sings it, the song is HERS!
Deeply emotional and the finest set of pipes. When she let loose in Concert - simply nothing else came close to her sound. Pure, powerful and gorgeous.
HOLY COW. Growing up with the 1963-64 Dionne Warwick version, I wouldn't have thought any other woman could sing it this well. Just amazing. Sing this well you will not, when 48 years old you become! :)
More than Gold but PLATINUM as well! Greatest of all time, a LEGEND. And thank you Lord for such a gift given to Ms. Linda R. sharing on earth makes us joys and treasured the music industry powerful.
Her 90s output is under the radar - after two decades of superstardom- she stepped out of the limelight. Still Linda gave us some fine tunes and knockout vocals - like this here performance.
Linda Ronstadt's beautiful voice has followed me throughout my life. She is a gifted artist and a true star in many genres of music. She most certainly belongs in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Linda Ronstadt has always been a phenomenal singer and a great interpreter, no doubt! She really could sing anything. What a loss for us all that her voice has been stilled.
My gosh, she was exquisite! The voice of a generation. Linda could do a cover, and totally make it her own! So grateful I had the chance to hear her live , from The Stone Ponies onward. Thank you Linda for sharing that talent with us!
The clarity of this songbird is amazing. Gorgeous important pipes - here a bit past her super star pinup days but still that luxury of a voice. Powerful enough and tender enough. Linda...sigh.
I think Ronstadt had the greatest sheer voice in the history of pop music, created by a confluence of circumstances (great physiology, being exposed to classical music and Ranchera music growing up, as well as rock and country, which sort of define what her voice really was, overwhelming power coupled with clarity and beauty with an edge). What I'm always struck by when I hear her live (and I've heard her live in person at least 50 times) is that she NEVER, not once, changed or altered a melody line to make it easier for her to sing (all the "greats" do it all the time). In fact, if she ever did change something it was to make it more difficult and more exciting live (see her live renditions of "Lose Again" vs. the studio version). I'm just glad that with the documentary and Kennedy Center Honor, etc., that people are finally remembering her and she's being put back in the place in history where she belongs. I was with two 20 somethings when I saw "Sound of My Voice" and both of them gasped during the live "Long Long Time" segment. "Why don't I know who she is? That's the best voice I've ever heard."
I'm jealous cause I never saw her once live. WTF is wrong with me? I like the very last note where she shows she can sing in perfect pitch like an angel.
My votes for greatest female voice of the last century go to Dionne Warwick and Joni Mitchell, with Ronstadt slightly edging out Dusty Springfield. Cilla Black had a dramatic singing style, but the quality of her voice wasn't quite as good as these four.

I've always thought this was one of Bacharach's most difficult songs for vocalists. The changing time signature, but the leaps in range make it really tough. The only other singer who could really manage it well was Cilla Black. She had that big voice like Ronstadt.
