I was just reading that about Sjodogg so I decided to come here and relisten to this classic album.
Almost EVERY band has another band they sounded like. This is such a ridiculous comment at this point, unless it completely lacks originality, and in black metal that does happen but certainly no one is doing it to sell albums. These elitists really are a blight in the black metal world, granted I am sure everyone reading this is a bit of an elitist which is necessary to a degree, but not to these basement dwelling imbeciles that just whine about how Knokkelklang sounds like Blut Aus Nord, as if anyone outside of us small group of NERDS even know who any of these bands are!!

  • @Bollthorn

First things first, I fucking LOVE this album. Absolute masterpiece of Black Metal.
Second, having read the comments, I checked out the reviews on Encyclopaedia Metallum, and wow, I've never seen so many polarized reviews for a singular album. And while I do agree about the "kvlt" edgelords who bitch about what a "real" Black Metal album SHOULD sound like, I think there's something more to it.
Each generation of (any genre of) Metal fans will have its die-hard followers, and with each generation, they will have their own collective of bands who influenced them at the time and they take the stance of "These are the bands of MY generation, this is what inspired ME" and so they will hold anything else that comes after those bands by the standards and merits of those albums that influenced them.
As one commenter here said, "if this was Emperor, there would be 100% reviews everywhere", and they'd probably be right, because Emperor were such a huge influence for the second wave Black Metal scene and fans, and their music left a strong impact. And it'll be the same with the die-hards of the first wave generation, who say Black Metal died in 1991, who hold everything up to the merits of bands like Venom, Bathory, Celtic Frost and Terrorizer.
The sad truth is, there are elitists of all generations. Hell, I was a complete jackass when I first got into Black/Death Metal. But I like to think I've mellowed with age :P
But also, people will always be afraid and skeptical of new things. To quote Anton Ego from the movie Ratatouille:
"In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations."

*Deathspell Omega* is the greatest band ever was and possibly will ever be, and of course they are The Titan of Black Metal ... What do you expect from a band? Out-of-this-world song-writing and musicianship, phenomenal performances of musical instruments (drum, bass, guitar) and vocals; deep and complex lyrical contents about various philosophical, metaphysical and theological aspects of human existence that force you to really think and learn much much more and think again. I challenge people to name just one other band in the entire music history that matches this level of intellect and excellence. This is not just some random fanboy-type statement and I understand that music is subjective but there is certainly a meaningful question to ask for the comparison between Richard Wagner and some random pop star when it comes to music; I am really looking for some names that match with the towering place of DSO in music not just Black Metal ...
Of course their approach toward Orthodox Satanism and their lyrics, that can be considered as the manifesto of Metaphysical Satanism, might not be everyone's cup of tea. But for me, this is the only reason Black Metal exists. If Black Metal is not about Satan, understood broadly and transcendentally not as a creature with horns or garbage like that, and *The Concept of Evil* and its central place in our human life, it is not Black Metal anyway no matter how extreme or infernal or second-wavish the music is. Apparently, this is not the way most of the people want Black Metal to be; they want it to be just plain and simple with some harsh vocals, lyrics about fantasy worlds, and cringe meaningless "Hail Satan" slogan, in other words, a genre among others. Black Metal must be complex, difficult and troublesome, without which it is just a music as any other genre, and the paragon example of this type of Black Metal is Deathspell Omega. I can write and talk about them for hours and days and months without being bored but a comment section is not the place.
Also, I never understood how people could even compare bands like Krallice, Mgła, Batushka, Imperial Triumphant, Altar Of Plagues et al to Deathspell Omega! First of all the whole reason for the existence of these bands is Deathspell Omega and the type of Black Metal they introduced. And secondly, Deathspell Omega is in its own league and none of these bands are even remotely comparable to the level of excellence Deathspell Omega presents.

Besides being one of the high-water marks of contemporary black metal and extreme music in general, DSO are responsible for some of the most compelling, quasi-biblical lyrics in the history of "popular" music. It's astonishing to me that persons with English as a _second language_ produced lyrics that not only so perfectly emulate the grandiose, liturgical mien of Abrahamic scripture (including frequent use of medieval spelling & vocabulary), but crafted concept albums that practically function as manifestos of Metaphysical Luciferianism in prose poetry form.
_We will sing a new song to thee, O God:_ [i.e. Lucifer]
_a psaltery of thirteen Stations_ [i.e. the 13 songs of _Si Monumentum..._ ]
_May scoria bury Eden and blind the light of hope..._
_See how I erase my name from the lamb's book of life_
_And reject the benefit of the holy wounds_
_I will walk before thee, Lord,_ [i.e. Lucifer] _in the land of the living_
_For you teacheth my hands to war and my fingers to fight_
_And sow seeds that do not proceed of the natural order_
*_Verily I say unto you, there is none righteous enough to resist, no, not one..._*
_For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity;_
_Your lips have spoken lies, your tongue has muttered perversity._
_The heart of a lost angel_ [i.e. Lucifer] _is in the earth; the immaculate is abased... forevermore._
_We will submit ourselves unto Him_ [i.e. Lucifer]
_And henceforth walk in His ways_
_And immolate on thine altar the spirit of individuality_
_As thou, lord, desireth sacrifices and obedience_
_We grant you all human love, kiss the burden that crushes our bones_
_And yell ecstatically at the spectacle of your abominations:_
_”What rewarde shall I geve unto the lorde,_
_For all the benefites that he hath doen unto me?”_
*_ERE THOU ENTER FARTHER IN SUCH MYSTERIES, COMPREHEND:_*
_The secret of the Lorde_ [i.e. Lucifer] _is for those who fear Him and He will make them know His covenant_
_Cursed is he that removeth awaye the marke of hys Master to please men and not to serve in secrecy_
    _Amen_
_Blessed is he that maketh the blind to goe oute of hys waye_
    _Amen_
_Cursed is he that putteth his truste in man,_
_and taketh manne for his defence,_
_and in his harte goeth from the Lordee_
    _The Lorde prevails_
    _Amen_
_Blessed is he that taketh rewarde to slea the soule of innocent bloude._
    _Amen_
_Blessed is he that murders Christ in himself and in his fellow men_
    _Amen_
_Hearken, thou, until I relate things_
_that shall come to pass in latter ages of the world,_
_for we are the seeds of the triumph yet to come..._
*_Only a few, in the multitudes upon earth,_*
*_shall be aware of what they do, but all will_*
*_court the assassination of Christ's redemption, again and again..._*
*_Their apparent choice of the cross against the serpent_*
*_Hides nothing, from north to south, but a call for chastisement_*
_The sins of men will stink more than a pestilence before God..._
_What a balm for the soul of those who respire hellfire_
_To witness Abraham sacrifice his firstborn. Amen!_
*_CONTEMPLATE AND SAY, WHAT IS EARTH, ELSE THAN A FRENETIC PSALMODY FOR HIS VENUE?_*
_”Arise O Lord. Let not man prevail...” visionary words indeed_
_For man is the key and man is the device_
_And out of his ranks shall arise the saviour draped in the blood of the unborn_
_Scriptures say "We do not think him to be the devil or a demon as some others do_
_but one of mankind in whom Satan shall dwell totally..._
_for he is the man of sin, the son of Perdition,_
_such that he will seat himself in the Temple as if he were God"_
_Woe to thee Corozain... woe to thee Bethsaida... and thou Capharnaum_
_that art exalted up to heaven, thou shalt be thrust down to hell..._
_For he will grow from child to man and extirpate_
_souls in a devilish whirl from your cursed bosom_
    [ . . . ]
_But mankind was the prism to the quintessence of corruption_
_Contemplate and say, what is earth, else than a frenetic psalmody for His venue?_
_What joy and glory shouts he who bears the mark of the Beast_
_Consumed and eaten have been the abundant abortions of mankind, but now,_
_none of them, humans, shall remain but what birds could not carry off in their claws!_
_He that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption_
_The scorpion shall open the book of Solomon for you to see_
_And the snake slither out of the lips that delivered once_
_The redeemer of man, born out of shameful maternity..._ [i.e. it will emerge from the vagina of the Virgin Mary]
_He that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption_
*_The lactiferous beast subjugated reason to appetite_*
_Praised be human nature, ciborium of shame and waste,_
_For bathing in decline a redeemer moist with semen so contemptible_
_Accept the truth revealed in Emmanuel_
_And listen: one Lord,_ [i.e. Lucifer] _one faith,_ [i.e. Luciferianism] _one baptism_
_All that He decides is holy, all that He says is law_
_And not worship Him_ [i.e. Lucifer] _by kneeling before Him if in thine heart_
_Is no true joy at the sight of Ariel covered by the ashes of devastation_
_Do not worship Him unless your soul glitters of the purity of sin_
    _And of unearthly virtues_
_It shall truly contain the vision of the fallen tabernacle of David,_
_That which brought forth our Elisha that ignites in flames so pure_
_SI MOMUMENTUM REQUIRES, CIRCUMSPICE_ [ *“If you seek His* [i.e. Lucifer’s] *monument, look around you.”* ]
_Let no human knowledge impeach Divine Truths_
_Nor any mists of incredulity prevent your mind_
_From touching Divine Mysteries, hear the voice:_
    _Before Abraham, was I am_
    _Si monumentum Requires, Circumspice_
_Drink from the grail He sanctified when_
_The frail saviour failed to raise up_
_The destroyed temple in three days_
    _And open your purged mind_
    _To Divine Oracles:_
_May the tributes of faith be rendered to Faith_
    _Si monumentum Requires, Circumspice_
_I shall descend in humiliation before Thee_
_And ascend before men only if thy will ordains me_
_In the midst of my carnal temple shall forevermore_
    _Sound the tremendous words_
_Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,_ [i.e. Lucifer] _who was and is and is to come!_
[And, as unambiguous a statement of the music’s theme as can be found, this is an excerpt of the penultimate song:]
_Does the first candle burn or is it ashen cold? Grace or Damnation?_
    _DRINK THE DEVIL'S BLOOD_
_Holy essence that consumes even the stars_
    _Drink the Devil's Blood_
_Drink and become the poison of earth and man_
*_Drink the Devil's Blood and become_*
    *_One of His million hands_*
    *_One of His million eyes_*
    *_One of His million brains_*
    *_And shining with utmost devotion_*
*_A molecule of The One with many faces_*

What a great comment. Lyrically, this band is unparalleled in metal. Maybe all of music. If some dude made a comprehensive video essay analyzing the messages of the trilogy and the eps, I feel DSO would be much more appreciated, maybe even lauded as the greatest metal band of all time. It's just that the lyrics legitimately require studying theology and philosophy, which is why they remain sadly overlooked by most. This is the only band to have ever provided a genuine argument against Christianity. In my opinion these are conceptually some of the darkest lyrics ever. Completely smashes the stereotype of metal being dumb and shallow, both musically and lyrically. I would have no qualms calling DSO one of the greatest artists, in general. Lifechanging band.

I have listened to their entire catalogue countless times, including their earlier primitive material, While I fully agree that FIMIIE is incomparably superior and mature than SMRC, I find this one to be a start of an incredibly interesting and experimental sound only DSO can create so far. My comment was aimed at that, not dismissing any other album by them.

    • @ramiwohl8816
      @ramiwohl8816 7 років тому +7

I agree with all of the above. As a long time fan of black metal and countless other genres throughout all corners of music, and a devoted musician myself as well, I keep coming to the last couple releases from this band as the absolute pinnacle of what music can be. It's still mindblowing to me how they managed to create not just these complex structures when you analyze the actual notes, but also to instill those notes with a sound that as an advanced guitar player I couldn't dream to reproduce. Basically, Fas.. , Kenose, Chaining the Katechon, Paracletus and Drought, I revere as being godlike works of art, paralleled by no other band you could possibly compare them to. For a while I thought the same of Abigor after Fractal Possession and Time is The Sulphur... came out, but even those releases don't grow in my head over time like DSO does. Si Monumentum, in my opinion, is just a very good black metal album that borders on still being somewhat traditional, but I'm still very happy to have a release that gives some insight into how they developed their recent style. Because as much as I encourage finding one's own style, this is an extremely worthy style of songwriting and musical execution to study for any musician. And it's so fucking hard to figure out from the limited (as in, absolutely zero) information that's available about them and their music. Some people figured out how to do a few covers that sound like they got most of the notes right, no one gets the sound right, nor the (oh so important) details in the musical lines. Also, as for their own diversity, take post-rock musicans for example. They should give Apokatastasis Panton a listen, and find out that this band just kicked the whole genre's ass =)
