I was just reading that about Sjodogg so I decided to come here and relisten to this classic album.
Almost EVERY band has another band they sounded like. This is such a ridiculous comment at this point, unless it completely lacks originality, and in black metal that does happen but certainly no one is doing it to sell albums. This album is a masterpiece
I usually hate long intros but this I can listen to front to back. Flawless album
First things first, I fucking LOVE this album. Absolute masterpiece of Black Metal.
Second, having read the comments, I checked out the reviews on Encyclopaedia Metallum, and wow, I've never seen so many polarized reviews for a singular album. And while I do agree about the "kvlt" edgelords who bitch about what a "real" Black Metal album SHOULD sound like, I think there's something more to it.
Each generation of (any genre of) Metal fans will have its die-hard followers, and with each generation, they will have their own collective of bands who influenced them at the time and they take the stance of "These are the bands of MY generation, this is what inspired ME" and so they will hold anything else that comes after those bands by the standards and merits of those albums that influenced them.
As one commenter here said, "if this was Emperor, there would be 100% reviews everywhere", and they'd probably be right, because Emperor were such a huge influence for the second wave Black Metal scene and fans, and their music left a strong impact. And it'll be the same with the die-hards of the first wave generation, who say Black Metal died in 1991, who hold everything up to the merits of bands like Venom, Bathory, Celtic Frost and Terrorizer.
The sad truth is, there are elitists of all generations. Hell, I was a complete jackass when I first got into Black/Death Metal. But I like to think I've mellowed with age :P
But also, people will always be afraid and skeptical of new things. To quote Anton Ego from the movie Ratatouille:
"In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations."
Bollthorn Who quotes Ratatouille on a Black Metal vid?
@@rambles1789 i think quoting ratatouille on a bm video is pretty brutal 🤟
Elitism in Black metal is good.
I agree with your statement. Although seeing Terrorizer listed as one of the bands from the first BM wave left me more than sceptical.

First time i heard "first prayer" i was on a train trip, completely lost in the atmosphere thanks to my in-ear headphones, and suddenly the outro "white noise" (about 5:25) was perfectly synced with the background hum of the throttling train. i wasn't really aware of that cyclying noise at the end of the song and i was about to stand up saying "what the fuck is happening here" lol. best musical fright i had since listening to Hell Awaits in complete darkness when i was like 14. I don't understand why this album has such bad reviews on metal-archives. This is just amazing. You can't like black metal and not like this.
A lot of people on metal-archives get off on being contrarian assholes. Basically, if it's popular, it's not "real kvlt", and thus bad ratings.
Pretty much. Just look at the ratings for any album considered a classic and chances are it will have a number of silly negative reviews (this is especially true for newer releases). At one point None So Vile had a 79% approval rating, but it's now at 85%...

Hail! Deathspell Omega...

best song in this album
Carnal Malefactor
Definitely my most go to album . Deathspell Omega rules!!
*Deathspell Omega* is the greatest band ever was and possibly will ever be, and of course they are The Titan of Black Metal ... What do you expect from a band? Out-of-this-world song-writing and musicianship, phenomenal performances of musical instruments (drum, bass, guitar) and vocals; deep and complex lyrical contents about various philosophical, metaphysical and theological aspects of human existence that force you to really think and learn much much more and think again. I challenge people to name just one other band in the entire music history that matches this level of intellect and excellence. This is not just some random fanboy-type statement and I understand that music is subjective but there is certainly a meaningful question to ask for the comparison between Richard Wagner and some random pop star when it comes to music; I am really looking for some names that match with the towering place of DSO in music not just Black Metal ...
Of course their approach toward Orthodox Satanism and their lyrics, that can be considered as the manifesto of Metaphysical Satanism, might not be everyone's cup of tea. But for me, this is the only reason Black Metal exists. If Black Metal is not about Satan, understood broadly and transcendentally not as a creature with horns or garbage like that, and *The Concept of Evil* and its central place in our human life, it is not Black Metal anyway no matter how extreme or infernal or second-wavish the music is. Apparently, this is not the way most of the people want Black Metal to be; they want it to be just plain and simple with some harsh vocals, lyrics about fantasy worlds, and cringe meaningless "Hail Satan" slogan, in other words, a genre among others. Black Metal must be complex, difficult and troublesome, without which it is just a music as any other genre, and the paragon example of this type of Black Metal is Deathspell Omega. I can write and talk about them for hours and days and months without being bored but a comment section is not the place.
Also, I never understood how people could even compare bands like Krallice, Mgła, Batushka, Imperial Triumphant, Altar Of Plagues et al to Deathspell Omega! First of all the whole reason for the existence of these bands is Deathspell Omega and the type of Black Metal they introduced. And secondly, Deathspell Omega is in its own league and none of these bands are even remotely comparable to the level of excellence Deathspell Omega presents.
I'm interested in your take on metaphysics, Satanism, God, and the concept of evil? Unfortunately few black metal listeners discuss or care about these concepts with any depth.
I would proudly place Dødsengel at this level as well.

Bellísimo! Deathspell Omega is Black Metal in other levels.
The monk-like chanting serves to drench this album in an otherworldy mist, seemingly calling forth to some ancient force older then time itself. Hosanna. If you seek his monument, look around you.
Besides being one of the high-water marks of contemporary black metal and extreme music in general, DSO are responsible for some of the most compelling, quasi-biblical lyrics in the history of "popular" music. It's astonishing to me that persons with English as a _second language_ produced lyrics that not only so perfectly emulate the grandiose, liturgical mien of Abrahamic scripture (including frequent use of medieval spelling & vocabulary), but crafted concept albums that practically function as manifestos of Metaphysical Luciferianism in prose poetry form.

What a great comment. Lyrically, this band is unparalleled in metal. Maybe all of music. If some dude made a comprehensive video essay analyzing the messages of the trilogy and the eps, I feel DSO would be much more appreciated, maybe even lauded as the greatest metal band of all time. It's just that the lyrics legitimately require studying theology and philosophy, which is why they remain sadly overlooked by most. This is the only band to have ever provided a genuine argument against Christianity. In my opinion these are conceptually some of the darkest lyrics ever. Completely smashes the stereotype of metal being dumb and shallow, both musically and lyrically. I would have no qualms calling DSO one of the greatest artists, in general. Lifechanging band.

Fantastic album!! I'm reading black metal by dayal Patterson and listening to the bands as I read!
I'm really worried these guys split up and are not planning to release another masterpiece upon this world, because this is easily one of the most impressive things I've ever heard.
Completely agree
You clearly haven't listened to "FAS - ...". Far better and more mature than this.
I have listened to their entire catalogue countless times, including their earlier primitive material, While I fully agree that FIMIIE is incomparably superior and mature than SMRC, I find this one to be a start of an incredibly interesting and experimental sound only DSO can create so far. My comment was aimed at that, not dismissing any other album by them.
I agree with all of the above. As a long time fan of black metal and countless other genres throughout all corners of music, and a devoted musician myself as well, I keep coming to the last couple releases from this band as the absolute pinnacle of what music can be. It's still mindblowing to me how they managed to create not just these complex structures when you analyze the actual notes, but also to instill those notes with a sound that as an advanced guitar player I couldn't dream to reproduce. Basically, Fas.. , Kenose, Chaining the Katechon, Paracletus and Drought, I revere as being godlike works of art, paralleled by no other band you could possibly compare them to. For a while I thought the same of Abigor after Fractal Possession and Time is The Sulphur... came out, but even those releases don't grow in my head over time like DSO does. Si Monumentum, in my opinion, is just a very good black metal album that borders on still being somewhat traditional, but I'm still very happy to have a release that gives some insight into how they developed their recent style. Because as much as I encourage finding one's own style, this is an extremely worthy style of songwriting and musical execution to study for any musician. And it's so fucking hard to figure out from the limited (as in, absolutely zero) information that's available about them and their music. Some people figured out how to do a few covers that sound like they got most of the notes right, no one gets the sound right, nor the (oh so important) details in the musical lines. Also, as for their own diversity, take post-rock musicans for example. They should give Apokatastasis Panton a listen, and find out that this band just kicked the whole genre's ass =)
Well, Synarchy of Molten Bones just came out last year, fortunately. It was amazing too, though not as much as the trilogy.
that's some good stuff

Drink The Devil's Blood.
Also, the purported "dissonance" of this music is vastly overstated. It doesn't exactly throw conventional harmony, of metal or otherwise, out the window.
Dissonance is a big part of conventional harmonic theory, and is also defined by it. How can dissonance throw it out the window? Everything these guys do is fully within the bounds of ordinary music theory.
+wladdaimpala88 Who is overstating it? It's only a small part of what makes them great. If the composition wasn't top notch, it would be redundant, but luckily they excel at that. tlnr; don't get in to things you clearly know nothing about.
wladdaimpala88 They didn't really display that till Kenose which I consider to be far superior to this album
Yeah, Fas and Paracletus are much more abstract with their harmony. It starts getting pretty crazy,
In my opinion, this particular album is quite dark, but not all that dissonant. Try pretty much every album after this one, including the EP Kenose, and you'll see what I mean. Of course, you probably have considering that your comment is from three years ago, but just in case you haven't...
im gonna leave this on autoplay, starting from this album... Lay down on the cold floor and fall to sleep.
awesome
