I just wish they stayed in this path…but Ulver, this first song in particular, sent me down THAT path anyway!
@@Anarchidi Yeah sure, Kapitel II is pure Post-Hardcore lol.
Like goatmoon but atmospheric
listened to the shit out of this album when i was going through a depressive slump back 2010. Ended sitting in the woods for 3 hours. Im much better now but honestly i miss being able to "feel" this type of music the way i did back then.
yeah I feel the same way I don't feel any music like I did when I was sorta depressed a few years ago. I'm partly glad that I'm not depressed anymore but I miss having a strong emotional connection to what I listened to
Dissection can do that for you.
At least you can always go back to those memories, which is a great thing. The generation growing up now has no moments like that.
Your response to my comment makes no sense
Aaah, the good old days of taking a beat-up ghetto-blaster with black-metal mixtapes, a bag of weed, a couple of beers, some sausages and a bag of coal into the woods for some late-night grilling with a handful of other metalheads... That was back around 99 to 2001 if I remember correctly.
The memories of doing stupid, irresponsible stuff and always getting away with it. I don't miss these days but I'm happy I lived them...
wow, finally some bass in black metal
I met Skoll playing live with Arcturus in São Paulo (Brazil) and we talked about Bergtatt basslines. He said "I was very young... ", expressing humbleness in his sayings. I suggest you to listen to Ved Buens Ende. As emotional as Bergtatt (although I prefer this one).
Skoll is super underrated. I'd say to check out Written in Waters by Ved Buens Ende and his stuff with Arcturnus if you want more of him. His basslines on those albums are amazing
Check out Strid. Not only did their songs have audible bass lines, one of their songs actually had two bass lines panned to the left and right speakers.
+dannyrjenkins which song was that?
EDIT: I see they only have 3 songs so I think I'll be able to figure it out xD
Eli Det Hviskes Blant Sorte Vinder. 🤘

The best black metal album.
... 🤘 🇸🇯
This album was way ahead of it's time. You can really hear how this paved the way for bands like Agalloch, Saor etc
aggaloch is like a copy. people say paved the way. but really people just cant get their own style and copy shit. lol
+nate johnson As much as I love agalloch I have to admit that Pale Folklore was pretty much their attempt at making Bergtatt. The Mantle on the other hand is TRULY experimental in black metal and combined elements and influences that were not previously prevalent in black metal.
+BT Studio Productions yes i liks aggaloch too but truth is truth lol
When I heard it for the first time I thought it's from the late 2000s
Ulver might've been the very first hipster metal band.
I have a soft spot for Natterns Madrigal but this, to me, is the hallmark of Atmospheric Black Metal. The sprinkles of dark folk give it such a heavenly touch. Many bands made came and gone, but none could emulate the magic. Thank you for this priceless gift Ulver.
If i were to call any black metal album a masterpiece from an artistic pov there would definitely be some, In the nightside eclipse, Nachthymnen (From the Twilight Kingdom), Far away from the sun, the Paysage d’Hiver self titled, 1184, and nonetheless Bergtatt. While NM also holds a very special place in my heart, no other album by them would be a Bergtatt.
Can't believe Usher would make something like this, but i like it
Who's that prick?
Man, if you ever thought Ulver could be put in a box, or category, after listening to more than one of their albums, well I dunno what to tell ya.

Yep, really good debut haha
The bass gives this album a very different character to a lot of old-school black metal. It crawls along behind the tremolo and blastbeats, adding so much sorrow and atmosphere.
0:00 Capitel I: I Troldskog Faren Vild (Chapter I: Lost in the Dark Forest)
7:51 Capitel II: Soelen Gaaer Bag Aase Need (Chapter II: The Sun Goes Down Behind the Hills)
14:25 Capitel III: Graablick Blev Hun Vaer (Chapter III: Grey Eyes Watch Her Closely)
22:10 Capitel IV: Een Stemme Locker (Chapter IV: A Voice is Calling)
26:13 Capitel V: Bergtatt - Ind I Fjeldkamrene (Chapter V: Spellbound - Into the Mountain Chambers)
There's a little bit of context lost in the English translations. Troldskog = troll forest. Beckoning is a closer translation of locker than calling. Bergtatt directly translated is "mountain taken" - today it's used in a more broad sense to be captivated by something (i.e. a spectacular view (not necessarily a mountain)), but the original meaning is to be taken into the mountain by the mountain people (i.e. the trolls/dwarves or whatever many names there's been for the humanoid creatures believed to live in/under the mountains). But Spellbound still conveys part of the idea though - since these creatures were believed to also use trickery and magic to draw people in.
Just some additional context that non-Scandinavians might enjoy knowing.
Thank you
@@madswm3
Trold/troll is also an "old" word for a wizard or any other supernatural being (not necessarily the big green ugly ones), so troldskog could be translated as enchanted or magical forest. The root word trold/troll is used in making of many other words, for example, Swedish förtrollad = enchanted/bewitched.
@@ilona6185 Yes true. I thought with the context of being taken under the mountain and all, it would make sense for it to be troll forest, but both definitely work, even with that context. And well it's also worth noting that trolls in traditional folklore are depicted/described in many different ways.

Incredible vocals
Feels good to get passed depression that is so bad I could not even listen to music unless I was drunk. Now I can listen again and feel myself.
Jeech. Sounds awfull.!
Classic B.M. album. grow up with this, back in the days it was a very new sound. all the trilogy is perfect mix of black Metal ambient and Folk.
I love Alice in Chains too
Classic album right here
Everything of Ulver from Bergtatt to today are all so well composed. Truly one of the greatest musical entities to exist. They need much more praise.
Indeed!
They have had multiple people as part of that composition. This album it was two guitarists who gave it that sound, one came back finally the other never did music again.
Their music has sucked since after 1997.
@@James-if3kcYawn.
@@mwheeler138 Yeah, that's exactly what their music after 1997 makes me do. Yawn.
Ulver demonstrates that black metal is also possible without satanic and blasphemic lyrics. Great folk/black album. Thanks Ulver. 🤍🤍🤍

You need to read more lyrics.
Everything pagan is also 'blasphemic' to monotheists, so according to them you'll go to their imaginary 'hell' either way :)
It's cute that even in black metal some people apparently try to avoid things considered 'evil'.
The lyrics is about a girl going lost in the woods, and is taken into the realms of the mountain king, where the trolls of the underworld is thirsting for christian blood.
I 100% agree with you its The great album
just found this. oh my lord... it feels so damn good. like my brain just released bunch of dopamine around 10:13. oh my. black metal and whatever that godlike sound is combined. my brain can't take it. i think my depression is cured forever
Also my favorite part, and for me when I first grasped I was hearing a masterpiece for the first time.
I felt it, too!!!
what a beautiful album
One of the most purely magical albums ever recorded, full of mystery, danger, and wonder in equal measure. It's like Edvard Grieg for the modern age.
It's great, but I wouldn't heap that much praise on it. It's fantastic though
Listened to this album last night while tripping off lsd it was 4 am and I decided to go for a walk in the woods. As reality crumbled before my eyes the beautiful melodies gave life to a forest that was breaking its self apart and allowed me to see the beauty in nature in a ways I've never experienced through the emotions portrayed in these beautifully written songs. Loneliness, sadness, rejoice, horror, life. Although I don't understand the words in the songs I can feel the emotions of each word and note.
LSD and walking in the Forest would be Amazing listing to to this. I bet you felt higher than the mountain peaks .
This still works for me after all these years. A little whisky and weed today 🤗 and I'm back. Listening to this in the cold of winter or summer, is 2 different experiences
I wrote a poem based on your evocative comment thnx
I have as well listened to this album on my first lsd trip, right after agent that shapes the desert, it had a calming effect in a way after the disorienting chaos of Virus

This album was the sound of a new and defining chapter of my life. I'd moved to a different country at 18, it was lonely for a while but music was a buoy to hold on to, and I discovered so much amazing music. This album just struck a chord with me from the beginning.
Forget Black metal, or any type of metal, this is one of the best Albums in general ever recorded along with Kveldssanger period
that thunder or gunshot right in the middle of this album scares me to death every time.. Other than that this album is like a watermelon that, instead of tasting sweet and nostalgic, produces a reliable, satiating tearful response. One of the few albums of any genre that is absolutely perfect. A true masterpiece.
Is it strange that i'm crying in some parts of their music, then feeling so proud of them producing this type of music, then feeling anger in others in other parts? This album makes me feel all of these emotions with such intensity and I believe most of you feel the same way or perhaps not.
Estefania Santiesteban their 'shadows of the sun' album hits me with emotion too, but not so much with the anger xD

I consider this one of the greatest albums ever created, in any genre. I definitely have an emotional connection to it too. One of my top 5 favorites of all time. I also agree with Shadows of the Sun being another very emotional album, though it's a different style.

One of the first black metal albums I ever bought.
I heard 'Capitel II: Soelen gaaer bag Aase need' on the Feuersturm compilation album back in 1998, and it was one of the songs that broke me into black metal.
It remains one of my favorite albums to this day.

It's better than most other classic BM. Stick with stuff like this and avoid Mayhem and stuff like that.
Brings back memories of me walking alone in the towering snowy forests with this playing on the background. Magical
There's so much music out there and somehow I haven't found enough time for listening to this album again until today. Great music here. I do like those quick transitions from Rock/Metal to Acoustic atmospheres and right back into the throbbing vein again. Nothing boring here.
Discovered this album and a whole host other black metal albums (Dissection, Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir: Stormblåst, and Emperor) back in 1997, beginning of my college years...felt good to listen to these bands when the majority of my peers were listening to the "popular music " ...I felt empowered to be part of the elite, an honor that was never bestowed upon the vast majority.

Older than time
I've heard quite a few metal bands in my life. Many of them exceptionally good, but when push comes to shove, there's hardly anything that compares to this masterpiece. I always come back to this safe haven of greatness when my ears are tired of all the generic crap out there.
It's weird that you said "safe haven" because that's basically what this was for me in 2015. I hung out here a lot, listening to the album and replying to comments here. I'm back here again and it still feels the same! :)
Simply awesome! Even after nearly 25 years still sounding fresh!

kosty krump if you ended up here...your correct.....heaviest release ever is still Mayhem-Deathcrush. period. check out later Ulver for forbidding, excellent ambience..
Sam Oneil lol why people consider deathcrush funcore?
@@recipoldinasty Death crush is random actually. according to necro butcher they just wanted to make extreme music. they didn't call it black metal until later on so that's probably why people consider it funcore. i have no fuckin clue what funcore is but... Death crush was the start of something new and that was norwegian black metal. Black metal bands were Bathory, mercyful fate and venom. out of all the three i think they were most inspired by bathory because bathory has that kind of screaming vocals which deathcrush uses a lot. the thing mayhem did create that helped black metal was Tremolo picking so i guess you can consider them kings of black metal for inventing that. but don't believe what i say cause maybe bathory came up with tremolo picking first. its been a while since ive listen to bathory's first album with the goat. black metal is just a huge fuckin history book haha. also sorry for the big paragraph but i love black metal i love this music the most out of any metal genre.

mayhem, burzum, darkthrone. the true BM-
+Hier Vi Burzums albums up to and including filosofem I like, and dark throne. Mayhem I never really liked as much and idk why. Immortal and emperor, especially in the night side eclipse I enjoy as well
+anderson Smith The only band missing here is pretty much Bathory (and Windir, but that is not exactly trve)
Jonas Wijte just refound this. My journey into BM is much further in. Bathorys early albums, up to hammer heart and all of windir is now staples in my collection. I'm not one to care about what is 'trve' anyway
That is good, limiting yourself to "trve" black metal would severly limits your options.
I also want to recommend you "In the woods - Heart of the Ages", really good and somewhat forgotten black metal with (light) folk and keykoard influences.
