The Amazing Spider-Man: Is Andrew Garfield's Spidey Run Underrated?

  • When it comes to the character of Spider-Man, we’ve seen it all from Raimi’s iconic trilogy, the MCU’s more tech-heavy and modern trilogy, some stunning animated Miles Morales films, and even a catalogue of disappointing spin-offs which follow villains like Venom, Morbius, and Kraven- and even the upcoming Madame Web which promises to deliver yet another mediocre spin-off film in Sony’s ongoing attempt to give us Spider-Man movies that don’t feature Spider-Man.
But tucked away in the depths of the Spider-Verse is Marc Webb’s 2012 reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man. A film that was released just 5 years after Raimi’s disappointing third installment of the Toby Maguire era and was marketed to be the untold story of Peter Parker and capture the darker elements of the character and his origins. This, of course is hot off the success of Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins and (at the time) upcoming Dark Knight films which had added a prestige touch to the genre of comic-book movies and pushed studios to make darker fare out of their own heroes. Now, the topic of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man is one that, in recent years, has seen somewhat of a resurgence as Garfield’s appearance in No Way Home gave audiences a chance to see him finish his character arc and swing into the sunset one last time... Or was it?
With recent talks online of “Superhero fatigue” and Cameo-driven muck, it gets easier and easier to believe that the once anticipated Amazing Spider-Man 3 may still be in the cards for fans of Garfield’s take on the web-head. But for me, I’m holding out any hype until I’ve gone back into the Marvel vault and taken a proper retrospective look on Marc Webb’s original installments and see how well they stack up against all the iconic (and not so iconic) films in this ever-expanding library of wall-crawling-cinema.
So, if you’re ready than refill your web shooters and aim them directly at that like button, and let’s take a look back on 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man.

Yes Andrew's Peter is totally and yes totally different from comic book's Peter but he was convincing as the movie version of Peter. He was suitable as Peter and he did his job but it's only the director and the writer's fault.

The funny thing is, people can say what they like about Andrew Garfields Spider-man. They can say he is too cocky and that's not who spider-man is etc etc. But I think the reason why NWH is seen as a resurgence is because he generally seems the most vibrant Spider-Man out of all 3. And the character is written exactly the same way as in his movies also. And it took putting the 3 together to actually see that because people were comparing an expectation. I have seen many different takes on Spider-man and his wit and attitude is rarely set by an expectation. Same by the villain designs which is constantly evolving to this day.
When people say they hated how he went back on Captain Staceys word. Well yes because have come to expect peter parker to mess up and suffer. that seems to be his source of his stories.
As for the geeky and shy side of Peter Parker. i think that varies tbh in all forms of media. Garfield is basically an awkward outsider which works for his version of Spider-man. Tom Holland's peter is not that geeky or Shy, he is more like a excitable kid, which works for his version of Spider-man. And Tobey was fairly cliche 1960's mixed with 90s geek which yeah works for his I guess.

The reason why the original trilogy and TASM1 were memorable, was because of the producer LAURA ZISKIN
It was because of her and her husband (the screenwriter Alvin Sargent) that the movies had depth
AVI ARAD on the other hand, just wanted to use the movies to sell toys
Unfortunately, she died in 2011, during the production of this movie
Without her, there was no one to stop Arad from destroying the franchise again
    Spider-Man was nothing without her

I LOVE the suit in Amazing Spiderman...it was a cool take. Spidey has had a lot of different versions of the suit in the comic books. So I really enjoy the variations in each incarnation, it's part of the fun of a new version! For example, Miles Morales's suit is awesome as well...probably one of my faves...along with Holland's Iron-Spidey suit! ❤️🕸🎬😋👍

The main problem with Andrew was that his version came across as a bully. As a starting point, that's fine, yet I never felt he matured to a point that he embodied the friendly neighborhood spider that believed that with great power comes great responsibility. I blame the script and direction more than his performance.

    • @flyguy7825

I agree, 100% I did not like his Spider-Man because it came across like he was too arrogant and cocky. Peter Parker at his core is an awkward yet respectable person who fought criminals, but kept his awkwardness along with beating criminals with his intellectual approach to things I never got that with Andrew Garfield Spider-Man I don’t blame that on him. I blame that on the direction and the writer.

Peter's high-school life could've been more convincing if it hadn't been portrayed in such a mean-spirited way
Most of the students were portrayed as being successful in more ways than he is, and bully him just to make us feel sorry for him, because "everything will work out for him in the end"
I mean, no teacher or adult was around when everyone was gathered to see Flash torturing that kid or beat up Peter, and they only show up to punish Peter
Usually, a mean-spirited story is the result of lazy writing
And the movie had solid writers

The movie itself isn't my favorite, but the opening of Spider-Man in that glorious costume (minus the spider logo being too damn low) fighting crime in that car chase quipping all the way was pure Spider-Man goodness IMO. I really thought Andrew was one of the best parts of No Way Home. Had Sony not botched everything trying develop a Sinister Six spin-off, his movies could have been a lot better.

You know those old comics panels being displayed throughout the video for the sake of style? Well, when one actually reqds those comics they'll see that Spidey wad always a jerk to cops and criminals alike. He used to tell officers how they should do their jobs, and he'd leave criminals hanging in all sorts of places as a joke. The wit he used (not sarcasm or snark - WIT) was corny, like dad jokes. Clever occasionally, but always corny. Puns, light jabs etc. Garfield's Spidey portrayal was much more accurate than Tobey or Tom. Tom runs his mouth constantly like a sitcom character (or social media influencer, which makes sense, it's just different), and Tobey's was subdued a good majority of the time, with occassional flourishes of wit and personality. Andrew's Spidey was natural in every setting, which is odd for teen Peter, but great for college Peter. The relationship with Emma's Gwen was ten times better than the chemistry of the MCU flicks, and the Raimi flicks combined. Matter of fact, I say Dunst and Maguire had no chemistry in any of those movies (Ursala, tho🤔). Zendaya and Holland have the chemistry of two platonic friends, which is fine.

The movies were fun and perfectly enjoyable and I never understood the flack he got...the writing was decent, the acting was fantastic...I was surprised and bummed to see him replaced before a 3rd film. This movie came out when I was in high school and there were a lot of skateboarders including myself and we considered “cool” kids and if you look closely at the film, he’s not cool. Either people are blocking his locker. They don’t know his name and he’s not too cool for school. Andrew Garfield was a great Spiderman, but it is hard to believe he would be bullied and ostracised in his take on Peter Parker. It's a pity the movies weren't the best. The Amazing Spiderman felt like a slighty too soon remake of Sam Rami's Spiderman with a somewhat different ending while The Amazing Spider Man 2 was bloated and overstuffed and felt like it was emphasising its franchise plans for the future at the expense of telling a good story. The great cast deserved better.

In my opinion, The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel were both underrated. It’s weird that it’s been 10 years since ASM2 released and it barely made it to the 10 highest-grossing movies of 2014, but wasn’t the hit that Sony had promised due to massive production issues and the ongoing Sony Pictures e-mail hacking scandal that doomed the film.
