  • Hello and welcome to Old Ways Gardening and Prepping.🍀 Would like to welcome you each to my backyard. Over the next few days I will be cleaning and preparing my elephant garlic to get it ready for curing in this video.
This year was a huge beautiful harvest and it's taking me a little longer to get it done. Finally found the time to sit down and work on it. It's not hard to process garlic to get it ready for storage it just takes time
Hope this video encourages you also to grow your own elephant or regular garlic. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them in the comments section below I will answer them as soon as possible. Everyone take care and have a blessed day.
    Blessings,
    Teresa

I planted my garlic last fall. I covered it before the first frost.
In spring it's coming up. I over mulched it didn't know. I took off mulch and it was destroyed. My first attempt was not a failure. I won't do that again. Lol. I was disappointed. But. My next will be phenomenal. Blessings everyone

Your welcome L P and happy to hear that you are enjoying the bountiful harvest of growing your own garlic. Just make sure after it cures that you save back enough to replant this fall. It truly is a rewarding blessing to harvest your own homegrown garlic that you nurtured. Thank you so much and going to have a bigger amount to plant this fall and can't wait to watch it all grow up again. Take care and have a blessed day ahead.❤️🍀🦉

Greetings from England and congratulations on a thoughtful practical video and a lovely harvest. Where I live (Bristol) we have heavy clay soil and 40in rainfall a year - maybe a bit more recently. And in the 20yr we've been growing garlic & elephant garlic there have been 5 occasions when we've lost most of the elephant garlic through rotting in waterlogged soil in the winter, and another 5 when wet weather before harvest has been followed by the bulbs coming up part-rotted. No similar problems with regular garlic. Raised beds & even more compost (we use lots already) doesn't seem to have made an obvious difference. How much rainfall do you get, and what trigger do you use to decide the elephants are ready to harvest?

Great video, thank you. So... if you had a dedicated garlic bed, could you just leave them in the ground to grow those corms into cloves, even if the plant is all died back? (The bulb wouldn't get soft? ) Also, if you would have harvested and right away cleaned and cut the necks, the whole dried top is useful? (Leaves and such, even if they are all dry? The plant dies back... so I am confused as to how you'd use that stalk and leaf part...) Thanks! That heat is now up here... mid 90's ... ug! Hugs ~

Good evening Red and happy that you enjoyed the video. Yes with the elephant garlic it can be left in the ground year round and will continue to get even bigger bulb wise. When I was blessed with the beginnings of my journey of growing elephant garlic that is how my dear friend was growing theirs. If the ground doesn't stay over saturated they will be fine and grow just like lily bulbs. When I harvested the garlic the tops were still green but the bottom leaves were starting to dry. You peel off the dry parts and the stalk will still be green inside and parts of the leaves will be. Due to the memorial services and several other things that had to be took care of I did not get to my garlic right away. So the tops started to decompose so I lost being able to use them. You can chop up the green stems and the green part of the leaves and dehydrate them. Once they are dehydrated you can powder them up and have a substitute for garlic powder. It won't be as strong as actual cloves but it does stretch out the ability to have even more garlic powder. Personally do not let my garlic stalks get completely brown before harvesting them it makes it harder to pull them from the ground. Yes this brutal heat is starting to make its way everywhere and it's going to be a rough one for a good wall. Hugs and love sent to you as always. ❤️ Take care and have a blessed evening.❤️🍀🦉
      Blessings,
      Teresa

@@OldWaysGardeningandPrepping I have both elephant and red russian growing and the russian has scaped but not the elephant yet. ( Dried the scapes) The leaves are sort of yellow at the tips but still have a while to go yet, I am sure. I keep them watered good in this heat. The russian one is taller with a thicker stalk than the elephant ones... but garlic is garlic. It's all good.
Thanks for the detailed reply. Most helpful.
      Hugs to you ~

Your welcome and was hoping that it would explain better. It's hard to put exactly what I am meaning in to these comments. Looks like I need to do some studying on the red Russian and see if it will grow here. If it's bigger than elephant then I am game. 😉 Your welcome and more than happy to help. Hugs and love to you as always. Take care and have a blessed day ahead.❤️🍀🦉

Hard to watch your videos. My internet service is not any good around here anymore, Go Figure. I found some what looks like to me garlic, lots of garlic in my woods. Not sure if it's wild, or my mother may have planted it there. They have no blooms though. Maybe that there not getting enough sun. Have not had the time to go out there yet to see what the garlic looks like. I dug one up in spring to see if it had the bulbs and it did. But still curious if there is another plant that is garlic look alike. The bulbs I dug up in spring did not smell strong like garlic.

Good evening Sherry and happy that you enjoyed the video. Yes have been noticing that my internet on my phone is getting worse also. Used to be really good in the phones and now play where's the signal. Sounds like garlic to me and it doesn't get enough sunlight. When you get a chance to email me a good picture of it and we will figure it out.😉 Take care and have a blessed day ahead.❤️🍀🦉
