    I liked your video. Must say I was surprised that you didn't point out the replantable "pup" bulbs that were clustered on the bottoms of a few that had matured. Cheers!

    Just found a box of elephant garlic cloves I had bought and forgot. I thought it might be too late but watching your video gave me a bit of hope. They'll go in April 1st. Thanks for posting 😊

      I don’t think it’s too late. Went to my allotment today and the ground is very very wet. If I still had cloves to put in, I’d wait for it to dry out a bit!

    Nicely explained. I envy you some of the sandiness of your soil - would be happy to exchange a flat-bed load with some of our heavy clay and we'd both end up with improved structure! On our clay (Bristol) there's not a chance that I could push the blunt trowel-handle into the untouched soil - it settles too hard. And if I did force it, the compaction would create a little pond for the clove to rot in. So instead I have to cultivate to the depth I'm planting to and then part the soil with a sharp implement in order to plant the cloves. Congratulations on your good results.

    Do you strip the garlic before you planted in the ground or just take it apart and plant it with the skin on

    Hi there, I grow elephants in the second season now. In your video I see that you also get these little, brownish thingies with the harvest, often attached to the bulbs. What do you do with those?

    My grandma planted some years ago and it just pops up at random every year but all the leaves fell off like 4 months after they showed up and the bulbs are surrounded by many small to medium bulbs all over?

    we planted ours in sept., was still quite warm out. now, lots of rain and cloves are growing out of the soil. should we cover them up as they come up? will be cold winter coming soon. in B.C., Canada, southern west coast. thanks!

      In the UK, elegant garlic is considered fully hardy, sown in autumn, and sufficiently hardy for young plants to survive normal UK winters. The UK national garden society, Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), has this page: www.rhs.org.uk/plants/243757/allium-ampeloprasum-elephant/details. In this it says the plant is hardy to minus 20 degrees celcius, which I believe is -4 degress farenheit

    So, maybe I missed it, but what do you do with the little mini clove looking growths near the roots? Can they be replanted?

    • @AllotmentBook
      @AllotmentBook  Рік тому +1

      I have never tried to replant these. From what I’ve read, these need a couple of growing seasons before the plants will develop full size bulbs. It would be interesting to see any comments from people who have tried this?

      I would also like to know what you can do to grow those young elephant garlic bulbs. I've had them in a flower pot for a few months now and I just looked (19 Aug '23) and they are still just as hard as when I put them in the ground. Who has experience with this? Greetings from Belgium

    I grow E.G. in permanent spots, usually the south side of a fence or tree. I harvest the plants that bloom and leave the others in the ground. When I harvest a mature plant I stick the little brown bulblets back in the hole. These bulblets will grow into an immature plant next year and a mature plant that blooms in the second growing season. I mulch the spot when the plants are below the ground. I am in a warmer climate so I don't know it this method will work for you. I can grow E.G. in the same spots for years, I got my E.G. from a friend who had it growing unattended,under trees and fences, in his yard from a previous owner, so its origin is unknown but over 50years old. You might try to experiment in a spot or two.

    It's not a matter of maturity, the bulb turns into cloves after a frost. It needs a frost or you just get a solid bulb

    I just planted my elephant garlic ,
    I'm wanting seeds for more plants next year , how long does that take and what is the best method for getting these results ?

    • @AllotmentBook
      @AllotmentBook  Рік тому

      Best guess is that the elephant garlic bulbs will be ready in August. On seeds, break apart a bulb and plant the cloves (garlic is grown from cloves). I set aside a portion of my harvest each year to provide the harvest for the following year.

    How long does it take for the cloves to sprout after planting please? I planned some a couple of weeks ago but no sign of anything yet. Not sure if it's started to rot, or if I'm just being impatient.

      Thank you for subscribing! Sowing in seed trays can work well, outdoors but protected (like a cold frame). This growing guide has more info: www.allotmentbook.co.uk/contents/brussels-sprouts/

    Great vid, but how long did it take for your Elephant garlic cloves to sprout?
    I planted mine on November 21, 2024 and it is now December 3, 2024 and none have sprouted.

      Cold weather will delay germination. It can take several weeks. I hope by January you will start to see them. Good luck!

    One delicious use for the elephant garlic is. ua-cam.com/video/vgn0-V57Eh0/v-deo.html. it grows wild in the Zagros mountain, where it is called Mooseer (cow garlic). Seer means garlic, and Moo, well, you can imagine what that means
