Love watching your videos and learning this great skill. I grew garlic last year but didn’t know to plant the bigger cloves and that it should be planted in the fall. So I got my big cloves in the ground this last fall. I live in Idaho and my garlic is already about 4” tall. So excited to see how big the bulbs get. 😄
Isn't it great? I planted hardneck garlic Oct. 16th for the first time ever. It's end of May now and they're so tall and healthy! So darn exciting, can't wait to see the bulbs, all 65 of them.😀

Thank you for this video. Unfortunately in my area the only commercially prepared garlic available comes from China. I just bought 10# locally grown fresh garlic which I will process to use through out the year. This info was very helpful especially the roasted garlic. Looking forward to trying that.
This is great timing as I'm just about to dehydrate some of my own garlic to powder. Not powdering it all at once is something I'd not thought about (though I do the same with herbs for the same reason, crush them as I need them). One question though, is there a benefit to buying ready minced garlic and dehydrating it instead of just buying the garlic powder? I don't know if it's the same in the US but based on your pre-weigh and after weight, it would cost me about 5-10 x as much to buy pre-minced garlic and dehydrate it (plus all the time and electricity) than just buying ready done garlic powder. Garlic powder over here doesn't have any added ingredients but minced garlic in water does.
It's not always about price, but the pre-minced still tastes better than what much of what I can buy as powder. And it's knowing a process to learn how to do from whatever you get your hands on ;) It's just an easier way to do it fast in bulk. But if it doesn't work for you -- then go with fresh!
@@ThePurposefulPantry Ah that's interesting that it tastes better. I'm in the UK and the pre minced stuff is very low quality and high price compared to organic ready ground stuff so that's why I was curious. Thank you for the reply. I'm glad I can grow my own garlic in my very tiny garden but I fully appreciate a lot of people can't do the same so it's great to see all the options.
I made ginger powder in my dehydrator, then mixed it with a few spoons of sugar for sprinkling, or baking. I need to do this now! Does it clump as bad as store bought?
Thanks for doing this video and talking about the garlic turning blue or green, I am fermenting garlic right now and I did notice some blue and green in it and was really scared about it but I guess it’s natural so thanks again 🧄
Great video as well, one question, Would the pre diced one not have in preservatives etc which isn’t good for you? Maybe a silly question, but just thought I would ask to have a better understanding of the method done. I like the one bought without the skin, but the diced one would love to understand better why this method since there is a lot less control of what’s mixed inside I presume.

Do dehydrate the garlic outside? I've never dehydrated onions or garlic, but have heard if you do it in the house, the smell is overwhelming and difficult to get rid of. Thanks! Love your channel!
I do not - but we don't have a problem with it - especially since we were able to have our doors and windows open. The smell was gone within the day, and we haven't had lingering issues.
I love your videos. I'm looking for the one on roasted garlic then dehydrate it. All the ones that I have found uses oil to roast. Can you help me please? Thanks
weird question-have you ever made a garlic, onion and mushroom powder mix? I am wondering because I make a lot of beef dishes that i would like to make a powder for an au jus/ gravy type mix for.
Do it. I have a lot of different varieties of spice blends like that, and if you use those separately all the time, blend them! My umami mushroom seasoning is that plus thyme.
This is a very late response but I just saw this video, did you save the garlic water ( from the jar of minced garlic) and reuse? I have some and I am dehydrating as I type. I put the water and decided to freeze it in I jar but now I am rethinking and maybe an ice cube tray and use it in my soups, stews, beans etc… what are your thoughts?
I can always count on you! I just received 24 6oz pkgs of peeled garlic cloves and I do not want it going to waste! I spill every video too🤷♀️🤦🏻♀️🤪. I’m not usually messy so I don’t get it🤷♀️. Guess I can’t talk and pour/measure/stir at the same time😩
I left 3 bulbs of garlic in the mesh bag over the winter in a cabinet to save. I just remembered them. They seem to of dried by themselves. Are they still usable for either eating or planting?
I have been wanting to do this for a while. I recently bought a big bag of peeled garlic from Costco. I minced it up and made little Scoops out of it and froze them. I just take them out of the freezer as I need them. I was concerned that my house would reek of garlic if I tried to dehydrate it. Do you have that problem? BTW I just purchased your temperature magnet. Brilliant idea!😊
Hi, I have a question about the end product. I dehydrated 3lbs of garlic and conditioned it for 7 full days. Everything looked good, so I threw it in my Vitamix and pulsed it until it was a fine powder and put in a mason jar. Added a moisture absorber and vacuum sealed it. The powder is sticking to the bottom of the mason jar. Is this normal because it's ground so fine or should I be concerned? Btw, it's the strongest smelling garlic powder I've ever encountered.
Is it all sticking in a huge clump, or just bits of it? Static is a real thing (and nothing to worry about). If it's a clump, then you have 1 of 2 issues - compaction where the pressure of the powder creates a more solid issue, and simply running a sharp knife through it breaks it up. OR you have moisture buildup in which case you need to run it through the oven process I showed to make sure it's fully dry, and store again.
@@ThePurposefulPantry thank you! It's more compaction. A knife easily disperses it. The end product was just over a pound of powder that I've put in a quart mason jar. There's about 2 1/2 inches of headspace left.
I am very new to dehydrating so I am sorry if this is a stupid question, but can you use a piece of Parchment paper to do this on or do I need to go get the mat that she has?
@@ThePurposefulPantry thank you so much I am learning a lot from you. And I appreciate that you take time out of your life to teach people like me. That have no one else to ask questions to. So thank you so much

Thanks Darcy, great video. Now going to internet to find out when to plant garlic in Australia. 😁 Later……. Guess I’ll be buying it for a while …… can’t plant it till next April…☹️☹️
Just put my garlic in .. and guess what, it has rained on and off for 2 days. I was told to plant it, cover it with about 4” of mulch and don’t water it until the shoots appear .. so (lol) what does it do, but RAIN. This is my first try with garlic and I have it in large pots, about 70 cloves. I live in Bundaberg and more rain is predicted. I may have to put a cover over it and pray … was also told to put it in fridge for 2 weeks before planting. Have done all this (even put a plastic mesh over the top of the pots as the cat next door loves nothing better than planting his royal bum in new turned soul - in MY yard) .. 🤣

I do not - but we don't have a problem with it - especially since we were able to have our doors and windows open. The smell was gone within the day, and we haven't had lingering issues.
@@ThePurposefulPantry Plus, if you love garlic, maybe the smell won't be bothersome.
I love your videos. I'm looking for the one on roasted garlic then dehydrate it. All the ones that I have found uses oil to roast. Can you help me please? Thanks
I haven't done one that is roasted - but plain. You can roast them - just don't use oil ;)
Thanks for your video and my regards from Brazil.
Love the hack about the jars/lids that say Mason, but aren't really. (spagetti sauce)
An extra lid makes perfect sense.
Can I use baking paper on the dehydrator trays for the bottled garlic?
Yes
Wow tqvm. Compact with great tips, thxs alot 👍.
I love your cutting board! It looks perfect for roly-poly olives. I looked at your Amazon link but didn't see it. Do you remember where you got it?
I have no idea - I've had it so long I really don't remember. There's every possibility it was Walmart or Target at some point.
weird question-have you ever made a garlic, onion and mushroom powder mix?
I did not, but you can! use it to make soups, flavor rice water, etc.
I love you. Thanks so much. I’m learning so much from you. Be well and safe
Oh great video ,,going to give this a try
Hope you enjoy!
I can always count on you! I just received 24 6oz pkgs of peeled garlic cloves and I do not want it going to waste! I spill every video too🤷♀️🤦🏻♀️🤪. I’m not usually messy so I don’t get it🤷♀️. Guess I can’t talk and pour/measure/stir at the same time😩
If I'm bulking up for storage, I'll only do it that way! It's just so much easier!
So much great 🧄 information! I’m going to order your dehydrating temp magnet too. Thanks for all you do! 😁
Thanks!!!
I left 3 bulbs of garlic in the mesh bag over the winter in a cabinet to save. I just remembered them. They seem to of dried by themselves. Are they still usable for either eating or planting?
You'll have to open them to see. I find that when they dry like that, they are just shells.
It really will depend on your tolerance, but a lot of folks opt to dehydrate outside. I don't have a problem with it.
Can I use a garlic press to mach them?
Sure
Fantastic video! Thank you! 👍👍👍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😀🌸
Does your sheet keep the smell or taste, can you use it after for fruits?
I use them all the time on everything.
Just in time! Getting ready to start doing this for gifts! Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving
Same to you!
Will the garlic taste linger on the dehydrator sheets, even after washing them? 🤔 I have silicone sheets for Sedona.
They don't on mine.
Great video! My commercial garlic powder is garbage. I'm making my own from here forward. Thank you Darcy!
You are so welcome!
Can you make a video of making homemade - Knorr's vegetable soup mix , seasonings .
Down the road, but until the, there are 100's of copycat recipes on the internet you can try!
thanks so much, love your videos
Howdo you stop it from hardening?
Can you use parchment paper?
You can always use parchment.
Great tutorial many thanks (:
You're welcome!
I am very new to dehydrating so I am sorry if this is a stupid question, but can you use a piece of Parchment paper to do this on or do I need to go get the mat that she has?
Yes, parchment will work fine. I prefer the dedicated mesh / fruit leather sheets but they aren't necessary.
@@ThePurposefulPantry thank you so much I am learning a lot from you. And I appreciate that you take time out of your life to teach people like me. That have no one else to ask questions to. So thank you so much
DARCY, THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO. I ALSO USE A LOT OF GARLIC IN MY HOME. I PLANTED ELEPHANT GARLIC LAST WEEK HOPING IT WILL PRODUCE SOME THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO USE BUT IT'S NOT ENOUGH FOR A YEARS WORTH. SO I AM GOING TO TRY THIS CHEAT METHOD AND DEHYDRATE IT.
I couldn't find any elephant this year (I'm sure the "c" played into availability - I would've loved to tasted it dehydrated. But yes! this is great!
Nice ideas.
Can you dehydrate roasted garlic after it’s been roasted in the oven? It’s hard to cut fine enough after it’s been soft
as long as you didn't use any fats/oils to roast it, yes, you can. It doesn't have to be fine - you can just smash it and dry it that way.
Happy Thanksgiving to your family I hope you have a wonderful day 🙏🍗
Thank you! You too!
Great information!
Glad you think so!
Thanks Darcy, great video. Now going to internet to find out when to plant garlic in Australia. 😁
Later…….
Guess I’ll be buying it for a while …… can’t plant it till next April…☹️☹️
Good luck!
I LOVE LOVE ❤️ YOUR CHANNEL!! Thx
TY!
Thanks once again Darci!
