That Tacoma is just a timeless design. Beautiful.
It desperately needs a tech an interior upgrade, but boy I hope they don't change the exterior too much.
@@hivetyrant7 I love the interior, personally.
@@RedWingsninetyone Me too.
I love most everything about the current generation Tacoma. I've had two, if it weren't for someone running at red light at roughly 50MPH, I'd still have one. But with supply issues and the pro not being available when I had to have a vehicle, I went with the 3rd Gen Tundra TRD Off road. No regrets, but adding a current generation Tacoma back to the garage ASAP. Absolutely love the way the Tacomas look, feel and drive.
@@hivetyrant7 same, I hope they do not change the exterior
Idk why the tundra front looks so bad here, everytime I see it in person it’s actually pretty good
If I'm not wrong it's the lense distortion on camera.
I just purchased a new tundra offroad. I love it with some compliments the screen is difficult but works well once it's paired to the phone. The sensors are a little to cautious, and the no rear step is annoying. I love the Tacoma also, I just needed the extra room for the kids so Tundra took my money. Both are excellent vehicles.
i love TFL and appreciate that they have a consistent course to compare things on now, i know how much easier that must be for them, but please don't fully drop the great Colorado trails and scenery you guys have highlighted so well in the past.
I have had two tundras (2008 double cab sr5 and 2014 limited crewmax; all 4x4) I finally opted for a 2020 Tacoma off-road. A lot Smaller for sure but I’m loving it so far.
Toyota was built on the small pickup and nothing changed since then! Always Tacoma!!😀
I agree. The hill top is a great demonstration of break over angle, and the sharp corner is a way to show the difference between a good turning circle and a 5 point turn. It demonstrates how too long can be much worse then too wide.
And why the Gladiator is so limited in its ability.
Tundra over Tacoma all day for me. It might not be AS capable off road but it’s plenty capable. The extra room and power over the Taco make it an easy win. Price difference isn’t much either.
seeing the Tacoma and Tundra side by side really highlights just how bad that Tundra front end looks.
Actually..it looks really nice. The old one was bland imho. Tundra has a personality unlike the American pickup trucks. Ford is doing okay but kinda getting lazy on the design.
Also the wheels of the Tundra looks way too small for the truck
Hmm I like both
The old one was much better
I like both, but the Tacoma just looks so dang good. Best looking mid sized truck out there.
The trd pro should come with better off road tires, that’s all I need to say
That and a front locker would be nice. Glad they finally added a slightly taller lift of the pro.
@@micahsandefur6834 yes exactly, paying more for the "ultimate offroad vehicle", should be much better then the basic off road package.
@@shmurty8186 The standard front skid plate, the lift, the fox shocks.. It's a start. Let's keep advocating for larger KO2's, a front locker, and an aluminum gas tank skid instead of plastic. The Tacoma is getting eclipsed a little bit when it comes to off road packaging by Ford and Chevy, even if the Tacoma is overall a better truck that sells more. But that can't be an excuse to not keeping pushing the envelope.
4wd was not needed on a single obstacle there.
You should make an impossible course and measure off road worthiness based on how far the vehicles can go before getting stuck.
Except 99% of the vehicles they review are press/loaners they cannot destroy AND they won't ruin the ones they have either since they only keep them for 5 months to a year at a time. Have to have something to resale. ;)
@@WW-wf8tu Exactly, most people don't have the money to destroy their own vehicles either, so MOST won't be taking those types of chances anyway.
The haters will watch a 25 minute TFL video, complain about it in the comments, then watch another TFL video. Keep up the good work, guys. The new property is awesome 🤘
We don’t hate. We want to help them improve. In what world does constructive criticism equal hate?
@@chappo4845 kind of seems like these guys know what they're doing given their subsciber count, not sure they need "constructive criticism" from a viewership outside of their peer group. However, I've been wrong in the past. Once. 🤣
@@jasonmorin5209 haha. I like them, they could be better. A smart person monitors feedback, good and bad, makes gradual improvements.
To all those calling the gen 3 tacoma a slog or the engine has no power lol. For my 17 trd orsb I can tell first hand and their are easy and not to expensive fix or mods or what ever you choose to call them. Absolutely nothing wrong with the engine and or transmission, but it's the tune with them that's the issue I went with kd maxx pro tune problem solved in low end torque issues, and you actually improve mpg. Funny why toyota themselves didn't do it right the first time lol, but atleast someone else did. Another issue people complain about the seating position again another quick fix I went with some seat jackers now for me at 5'9" or 5'10" height seems to help me to feel more support with my legs especially while driving long distances. Some complain the interior is so out dated I don't think so with mine, but than again mine did come with both the upgraded tech, and tow package plus some other upgrades the previous owner had purchase for it. I bought it when it was almost 2yrs old and 13 000 miles on it I can only wonder why the previous owner got rid of it,but probably because of the two issues I both seen and felt my self. I still remember first driving it to AZ for the first time and flooring it going up hills the dang thing didn't want to go pass 50 mph. But after I took it into the dealership and they updated the firmware for the tune it fixed it kinda of but I can tell it still was lacking a bit and not allowing itself to perform at its peak performance. So of course I did what most I'm sure did and deactivated both my trac. Stability control completely by holding it down for a few longer sec. And activating my famous ect button. And yes the truck would performed much better but also at the expense of using more fuel of course. But with that new tune I don't even have to deactivate anything, and if I do use my ect at times it really makes a huge difference. Hope this info helps some of you guys out.
Toyota tunes their engines for reliability, not performance.
Speed in my 6 cylinder Tacomas have never been the issue. I wouldn't mind if the transmission transitioned smoother, but it's never been a real issue. My Tacomas have always been a favorite, can't wait to get another one ASAP.
Actually, the Tacoma TRD Pro is a $50,000 truck with a $7,000 dealer rapeage adjustment....making both of these vehicles the same cost. Thanks Toyota! Greed!
Rapeage...LMAO
Can't rape the willing........
Yeah dealers are selling the 4Runner TRD Pro for $61,000…🙄🙄🙄
@@BigMike_6872 Same for Tacoma TRD Pro...I'm trying to buy one....but refuse to get raked over the coals by the dealers
I can walk into my dealer in AZ right now and buy a Taco TRD OR for $37-39k. Dunno where you're at, but that's unfortunate for you.
You guys need to make those hills more challenging.
They have been using the most capable from the factory OR vehicles you could ask for, it is going to look easy. And the point is not, can one get stuck, anything can get stuck if put in the wrong situation. The point is to illustrate on a level 3 - 7 difficulty course, how do different vehicles do.
I wish you guys would just drive them in 4WD without all of the computer gizmos engaged. I would like to see how they perform just by the seat of the pants. I think the computer stuff should be reserved for when you absolutely can't make it through an obsticle on your own.
Facts👏
Totally agree. My manual 18 Sport 4x4 is extremely capable and has no extra bells or whistles. Sure, the gizmos are cool but so is building your skill level.
I third that
The extra gizmos are selling points for vehicles, no reason to not show them off.
@@Toastedyogurt I don't have a problem showing them off, but I think it would be more interesting to compare going through the off road course in just 4WD to doing the course with computer aided driving. I would like to see how much better the tech is than the humans. I have a 3rd gen 4Runner with no tech and it is very satisfying to rely on driving skill to make it through a trail. The computers would come in handy when I reach the limits of my driving ability as a safety net.
that Tundra front grill is ridiculous
Let's make no mistake, the best off road Toyota is a Land Cruiser, which would include the 4Runner (essentially a Prado). Then it's a toss up between the Taco and the Tundra. Bottom line double cab trucks the wheel base is just way to long unless you're lifting significantly.
If you’re going to use an off road course you need to accept scrapes and scratches. If you make it so easy that nothing fails, what are you testing?
Understand the constraints but the courses need to be something that a sedan with some ground clearance and good tyres can’t complete.
Maybe try a few junkers just to make sure the course actually tests off roaders. Also, have you considered a faster section with a jump or two for the baja vehicles?
Otherwise, love the videos.
If you understand the "constraints" then you have already answered your own question and reasoning why this is the way it is.
@@WW-wf8tu the constraints relate to press cars and scratches.
There’s no reason the courses can’t be more difficult. I bet some 2wd cars could complete them.
They’re free to be creative. If we can’t constructively criticise…
The real trails in are more entertaining then the course you guys made. I didn’t learn much from this test. Please, go back to real off-road tests. Thanks.
These videos are for people intended ij buying either one of these two vehicles and if you aren’t then you know what to do thanks .
Much agreed. At least until it’s done done.
@@rafaeldiaz8129 I am looking for a new truck. That’s more of a coincidence then the reason I’m watching TFL videos. TFL and Savagegeese are the only reviews I watch and I just want them to keep the things that make them Great.
Do you only watch the videos of the vehicles you plan on buying?
Not really much of a challenging test, they did all these obstacles with their $5,000 Escalade a few weeks ago. Other than that, fish pond, mud pit and hill climb, their course looks good for crossovers, they need to do a more difficult one for actual off-roaders.
They did right out of the gate mention that though. They were just showing some simple stuff. But let's be honest, MOST people aren't going to be doing things much more challenging than that despite what they have. I've seen some Ford Raptors and Ram TRX's that I would bet have never touched dirt or mud that wasn't on pavement.
Stamped bed on the new Tacoma is cool. Only thing I don't like is that its TRD and Pro underneath vs. Like the Tundra had.
Would love to see a Lexus GX470 in a video video like this and maybe a land cruiser
Tundras are the best truck ever
Roman, it’s kind of annoying hearing you tell these guys what to do in every video. If you could plan it ahead and do it off camera, I’m sure I would enjoy your videos more. Have a great day. Great video btw
Roman is stubborn and changes his mind all the time. Probably won't work.
The Tacoma just flat out looks good in the green color.
the spruce mica green looked even better, shame they only offered it for a year or two on the 2nd gen
I feel like you guys need to bring the Ranger Tremor back and put it up next to the TRD Pro and maybe the Frontier.
Im 37 and have owned nothing but manual 5 speed toyota Trucks/4runners, My first vehicle was a 1985 Toyota 4runner. Then I bought a 84 4runner Rock crawler. Then a 96 Tacoma that saved my life in a headon crash at the speed limit when a car made a left in front of me on a hwy I hit her right in front of her door then it through the truck off a 10-15 ft drop like dukes of hazard and bent the frame in a u shape. walked away with a hurt back and cracked rib. And now I have an 03 Taco that I supercharged after watching Andre Drive The 1997 supercharged Tacoma on methanol a few years back.
How’s it holding up? Got a vid?
@@richeyrich2203I don't have any videos but the Truck is doing great has about 271k on it and Rips with no problems since I ironed out all the bugs.... the other guy has the same setup and it dyno'd just short of 300whp & 310 Torque.. the 3.4 5vzfe stock are around 140-150whp
The FJ Cruiser is the best Toyota off road.
Wrong. 4runner
Wrong. 80 series Land Cruiser.
Hilux turbo diesel ....... that is the best!
Sorry guys, pretty sure the Sienna could do this course. I’m not kidding. Long time fan. Do better.
There is no Tacoma pro this year. Where is it? Unobtanium. Show me one photo of a buyer’s shipped one other than these media demo models.
I like the testing of the front locker that you guys did with these trucks! Oh, wait… 😂
Most owners of these trucks will never use the rear locker anyway. Why have two when you dont even use the rear
Cool video as always TFL, the Tundra is capable, but I think the Tacoma vs. 4Runner would be a lot tougher to decide…
In regards to capabilities? Because they are 2 completely different segments. Capability wise, they will match each other. Only the wheel base for break over angles will be factored in.
Idk why the front of the new tundra is so low… really sucky. I’m one of the rare breeds that couldn’t give two craps about big screens or interior “tech”. Give me ground clearance, manual transfer case shifter, and some rubber floors I can hose out. Trucks nowadays have gotten too soft but more people than ever are buying em so I guess that’s what they want. Dang shame.
this is why a few months ago I bought a 15 TRD offroad tacoma and put a 2.5" lift on it and K02s...manual transmission and less tech than the third gens. Also made in Texas where the 3rd gens are made in Mexico. I think the 2nd gens are just better trucks.
the massive truck is more comfortable than the smaller truck. imagine.
Good content, i like this information
Awesome comparison!
Good to see the course evolve and how a test like this will drive that evolution. Dumb down the hill for pickup break over or keep it higher for small wheelbase Jeep and Bronco.
I understand the TRD Pro Taco is on hand but comparing price to this Tundra a TRD offroad Taco would be more relevant and worth mentioning. On this course the TRD offroad would not give up any ground to what the Pro did.
the only difference between the 2 1 looks to have a 200 series grill and package and the other has had gaudie 300 series grill fitted I would the the proximity senses should be turned off otherwise ya going to going to go nuts trying to kill the beeping noise
Need trd pro tundra... not a fair comparison. It's all about the clearance.
I hope for 2024 they offer the new Tacoma in a pro model with the tundra V6 twin turbo motor. That would be a cool truck! 😬
Any engine with forced induction just never lasts as long as a naturally aspirated engine. It just wouldn't be like the Tacoma we love today, running reliably forever.
@@erod6468 I wouldn't say any engine with forced induction doesn't last as long as a naturally aspirated motor. If that was true, then why are all semi trucks turbo diesels? Those things drive over 1 million miles on a motor.
@@perchowski3021 those are much larger diesel engines that do not require spark plugs to create explosions like a gasoline powered engine(they strickly use high compression to superheat diesel fuel and create the ignition in conjunction with glow plugs on some engines for initial and cold starts), thereby reducing wear on much stouter piston rings and cylinder walls. They actually benefit from a compressor(turbos in this case) much more than a vehicle when it comes to longevity and reliability. Very common to wear out piston rings and cylinder walls among other things, especially on forced induction gasoline 4 stroke engines.
@@perchowski3021 two completely different internal combustion technologies. It's akin to comparing apples to bananas.
Even smaller turbocharged diesel engines suffer major issues early on. The long term diesel engines in smaller passenger trucks/cars you see getting to over 500k miles or more without major overhauling are the naturally aspirated ones.
Tundra looks good
Years ago I owned Dodge Dakotas with V8 and a fairly aggressive tire package. Since then I’ve owned multiple Rams, Silverados and now Tundra’s. I’ve always thought the lighter more nimble Dakota handled mud and snow better than the full size trucks. I think Ram made a mistake not reintroducing the Dakota sooner.
You lost me at dodge. Sorry man
@@terrynichol577 understandable that’s back when I’d buy a new truck every 2 years
Don't grade the top of the hill! That's the true challenge! I would like to see if the ZR2 brothers (Colorado and Silverado) can make it. Also the Raptor, Tremor brothers, TRX, Gladiator, etc.
Totally agree, every challenge shouldn't be doable by all trucks/4x4's, would love to see the disparity on something like that between trucks and say jeeps or other 4x4 worthy SUV's. Now if you test every 4x4 worthy truck and jeep/suv and none of them can tackle it, might be time to adjust aim a little.
The holes could be deeper.
Yeah I keep bumping the cervix
Tacoma with a manual >>>> Tundra. Only reason to buy a tacoma is because you can still get it with a proper transmission.
Hello guys, basically a good idea to build such a course. Unfortunately he is far too good and too weak. Obviously, it does not pose any challenge for these vehicles. Greetings from Germany.
Don’t cutt the hill down. Just drive it properly next time Andre
My 2004 Impala SS had more aggressive tires than that Tacoma 😂
But why? 🤣
@@samusaran7317 you’re going to have to ask Toyota that one 😂😂
@@josephwhiskeybeale they're not the most aggressive all terrains in the world but better than a passenger car. Not sure what you're running on your Impala or why.
Just started the video and I'm taking a guess. The Tacoma is the better off-roader. Wouldn't want one myself because the design of the cab is such that even I, at 5'7" have a very hard time getting in an out of it. The Tundra would be a better daily driver due to its better cabin. However, size is the factor here, and that's why my best are on the Tacoma (smaller is better when it comes to off-roading).
Im 6ft 5 and have no problem getting in and out of the tacoma trd pro
Your “holes” corse has the holes to evenly spaced. They are not articulating the suspensions. The are just rocking the trucks side to side.
Always enjoying your videos
I’d rather the Tacoma for the same reason I like my Colorado i could use it for everything like off roading towing and hauling yes there is a compromise in towing and hauling capacity I’ve admittedly overloaded it a few times but it hasn’t let me down yet
The Tacoma is jolly rancher green.
my god i just jump scared because of that intro
That tundra needs a lift and I think it would make all the difference
So the Tundra couldn't do the fish pond course ?
I would pick a Frontier this year. I would probably pick the new Tacoma when it is updated.
The new Frontier looks great!
New ranger coming out looks good too

I stopped seeing gladiator content showing up on my youtube for a long time now, but I still see Tacoma content every now and then, I feel like gladiator interest died out.
I hate how the grill on the new tundra extends to the bottom onto the bumper...seems kinda odd and cheap looking.
The grill doesn't really extend, the bottom of the bumper just blends in color. Some people are paint matching the insignia between the two pieces.
@@micahsandefur6834 either way it looks awful.
@@JohnnyBoy919 Well, you're absolutely entitled to your opinion. Plenty of other people think it looks good. Personally, I think the new generation looks way better than the previous generation. I could have done without the chrome myself, but again... Some people like the chrome too. Fortunately there's something different for everyone.
@@micahsandefur6834 if you pause this video where it shows the front of the tundra and tacoma, you really think it looks good? It's not even the chrome just thebwaybthebgrilk is setup and how low it goes. Also the fact the jew tundra doesn't have tow hooks on the front..I'm sure they will fix that.
@@JohnnyBoy919 Again.. The grill itself does not go all the way to the bottom.. It's that the bottom of the bumper is just also black, which you can change if you don't like it, but a lot of people do. I actually think the 2022 Tundra looks pretty dang good overall. Personally, I absolutely love the Tacoma and it's my personal favorite. But I think the new Tundra looks good. I've also seen both in person and have owned both. I'll be keeping the Tundra and adding a Tacoma back to the mix ASAP. Again, fortunately with everyones different taste and preferences, there's enough options out there to go around. Every manufacturer seems to have something different that suites different people. Go with what YOU like. PLENTY of people also like the new Tundra, I see em every single day I get out of the road.
You need a brush cutter head for your equipment
I went looking at new Tacoma’s last night, 4/25/22. Dealer told me they had none for sale, and when they do, it will be 5k over MSRP, period. Also no more building a truck to the buyers specs. You buy what they have, or you don’t buy….
Sounds like they're are asking you to find another dealer because they know they won't be in business too much longer with attitudes like that. And I have a hunch you'd be much happier at another dealer too.
Made me rethink selling my loaded 2015 Silverado z71 that’s paid for. Maybe I don’t need a a new, smaller Toyota.
@@timyestim this is just how it is now. I mean they are charging $53,000 for a 2019 Trd pro tacoma with 30,000 miles on it.
My local dealers will let me order as I like and want, it's just gonna take a little time. Unfortunate, but yeah, that's how it is. I also was able to negotiate that they give me MSRP and agreed to it. This was on a Tacoma or a Tundra and I talked with 4 dealerships, found 2 that were willing to budge to my preferences.
@@Eastsidegeorgiaboy They have to with a used vehicle, they have A LOT more room to budge of a new one. They bought that used one for too much, they're going to sell it to make some money back either way.
U need momentum climbing the hill, the Tacoma can do it.
I thought the same thing. I have a 4R TRD Pro with slightly more aggressive tires and there is no way I wouldn’t make it over the top of that hill
I hate the boat like feel of the bilsteins
I would like to take my KL Cherokee Trailhawk over both the crossover and the “Fish Bowl” courses. I bet it would be a piece of cake.
love the toyota content
OR... Andre can YEET the Taco up the hill. Pretty sure that'd work.
You guys need a weed wacker.
I don't think changing the hills crest is warranted. IF you are going to redesign natural terrain to that degree, you are no better than the manufacturers that send press launches out and just breeze through w/out a challenge because they made the course easy for their vehicle(s). I get having to create a lot of what you have to challenge things, and that is great. But the hill is a real obstacle that people will/could encounter in the real world. Thus, it sets a bar for break over angle testing. But by now, you have already done something about it I am sure and my opinion is weeks too late. lol
Have you guys ever done a restoration on an older Jeep Cherokee with that amazing 4.0L inline 6 in order to have a purely mechanical "control" vehicle as a basis for comparison?
They owned one for a while, I believe it was a 91 or a 92, it was mint. They sold it a few years back.
@@trailrunnah8886 aww… it’d be cool to see how something like that would do against all the electronic gizmos they’re employing today.

This is editing vs timeline dilemma. This next weekend they will show another episode of Taming Tumbleweed where the course is still being built. But yet, we have already seen it completed in more than a few videos. They are excellent about pumping out content, just not in order in which one might expect for continuity.
Ford launched the Lightning today, and all you do is talk MORE about Toyota?
Tundra is such a rip off xDD. FULL SIZE TRUCK with like barely 10K towing capacity, same bed size as Taco and literally not even diesel lmao..
