I'm an hourglass! I've been hidden under the fifty pounds I have lost in the last seven months! My hip bones are wider since having babies but there is definitely some definition there at last! still I have fifty pounds to lose. So, at 64 I say it's never too late! thank you. Jayne.
Thanks for the helpful videos. I have another easy tip for this. Using method 1, you can get distracted by parts of your body you may or may not like and it can be difficult to discern your shape objectively. With method 2, you might not know how to interpret the numbers. Another easy way is to put on a pair of dark tights or leggings and a dark form fitting tshirt, take a photo of yourself in a full length mirror straight on and holding the phone as horizontal as possible. Then use the markup tool in a bright color to draw lines from outside of each shoulder to waist; and from waist to outside of hips. Draw straight horizontal lines from shoulder to shoulder and hip to hip. Voila! Your shape will be obvious.
I’m an inverted triangle. A nighmare to find well fitting clothes... i know the theory of what should suit me but when i go to most stores in the UK, everything is tailored for pears.
I think that I'm a rectangle. Shoulders are about 2 inches larger than my bust but the rest of the measurements are in line with rectangle. So happy to be a part of this community. Marie-Anne, I love your videos. Thank you!
Oops forgot to say that no better teacher than a French lady. My teacher was mothers best friend who was french. Taught me about columns of colour etc. If you do not have such an advantage I would think that the courses may be an ideal option. We can always learn.
Thank you, this helped to confirm I am a pear. I thought like Annie who commented below, maybe I am a combination so on a piece of paper I put two dots apart for my shoulders, then below two more dots in slightly for my bust, then two more slightly in more for my waist, then two wider than my first set for my hips. That really showed I'm a pear!
Thanks for this video. Although I always thought I was an apple, I’m actually a fleshy rectangle approaching hourglass with a belly that never recovered from two back-to-back pregnancies. 39-40/36/32/40. The Kibbe system works very well for me - I am a “soft classic” in that system.
I thought I might have been a pear shape, but after measuring my body I find I am a rectangle. This is helpful. I use to have a waist line, but after 2 children and a hysterectomy I feel I do not have a waist line anymore. I am also high waisted though I am short 5'3" and I have a hard time figuring out where my waist line is. So many on line bloggers for fashion do not go into the body shapes that much. Thanks for doing this.
Thank you, Marie-Anne . Including the shoulder measurement and your further description of apple & pear helped me realize that I’m a rectangle. Before I had my daughter at age 42 I was most decidedly an hourglass. Pregnancy combined with early menopause and later weight gain certainly took a toll. I’m hoping with your guidance to find my style once again, even if I am 71!
I love your method because it is so simple, yet distinguishing between a rectangle and an hourglass is quantitative. I also think there these five shapes cover all the possibilities. I saw another video yesterday on this topic that said “rectangles are all tall and flat chested”, which has nothing to do with it, as you say it is about the relative proportion of the upper to the lower body. I’m definitely a rectangle; shoulders, bust and hips measurements are identical, waist about 20% smaller; but I’m also fairly short, and full-busted, so much for that theory. I’ve also seen videos about the Kibbe body shape method, which has an incredible 13 different shapes, too many. Even with so many to choose from, I didn’t fit any type! Last year I walked off 30 lbs. and between 2 and 3 dress sizes. This year I plan to lose the last 30 lbs., adding your French stay-slim techniques, and regain my youthful slender hourglass shape. Thanks for all the inspiration you give me!
This was very helpful. I probably have not truly measured myself since I got married 33 years ago. I was a 95-pound twig back then. Since then I have had 3 children and been through menopause. After children, my bust size went way up and after menopause, my hips spread a little more. I am officially an hourglass shape. This is good to know. Thank you so much! I think I can actually start defining my narrow waist once again. But NO crop tops or tummy showing for this 50 something lady.
I enjoy your UA-cam channel. My great grandmother was from France. So, I have French ancestry. I found out I am an hourglass. On another channel, I also learned that hourglass shapes can turn into apples, if they gain weight in their tummy. Also, I found out that pear shapes always gain weight in their hips, butt, and thighs, that always exceeds any weight gain in their tummies. Their upper chest and shoulders are usually always small, though, but they are bigger on the bottom. I am larger in the shoulders, due to athletics, larger in the chest than I am as I go down. Thought you should know that an hourglass can turn into an apple and an apple who loses and slenderizes their belly, will turn into an hourglass. Interesting, yes? Thank you for what you do. You remind me of one of my sisters and my mother, she passed away in the 1990's, but you remind me of her so much! Great job and thanks again!
I find the mirror trick the most accurate for me cause whenever I measure myself my shoulders come out smaller than my hips but my silhouette shows they're equal, plus I have a big bust equal to my hips so I don't relate to the pear descriptions and tips when it comes to that. I've seen pictures of women whose shoulders are indeed smaller than their hips and I honestly had to see it for myself cause I just couldn't imagine that looking at myself and wondering if mine are smaller, I definitely don't look like them. I think hourglass is what I am even tho I feel weird calling myself that haha or any shape tbh cause people can be judgy when it comes to body shapes. thank you for this video, very helpful and straight to the point!
I think I am an hourglass....shoulders 38, bust 38, waist 28.5 and hips 38....I lose weight from everywhere fairly evenly...just need to tone up a bit now....LOVE French Chic...
Thank you for the complimentary body shape class. I am a rectangle, with my shoulders and chest a bit wider but only about 2.5% wider so I'm still a rectangle. (42/38/33/39) I am also 6'0 tall with very long limbs, so I often am challenged finding longer sleeves and inseams. I believe I need to focus on accentuating my waist but also be a bit mindful of not calling too much attention to my shoulders so I may need to avoid boatneck necklines and anything that will make my shoulders stand out. I have a super wide ribcage but a very small bust (38A) In the 80's everything had shoulder pads and I was a lot thinner back then but they never worked for me anyway!
What if you have a short waist and wide hips but also a prominent belly? I'm not sure whether I'm an hourglsass, apple or a pear. Maybe I'm a fruit basket Haha.
Shawnelle Martineaux - A-line blouse or tunic that covers your belly and hips without binding, but just barely. Slim pants or leggings on the bottom. Elongating neckline or long necklace or scarf. A beautiful, inviting smile to put attention where it belongs: on you!
This was VERY helpful! I had never been advised to take my shoulders into account so I thought I always had a pear shape (at my skinniest I was 32/27/40) but I just remeasured myself and I am 44/36/35/45 which would make me hour glass. I haven't put on a ton of weight in my shoulders (it was all in my waist/ and lower abdomen) so as I continue to loose weight that will shrink more than my hips and shoulders will. Thank you Marie-Anne! No wonder buying tops was always a pain!
Thanks so much for this video, Marianne! I have been trying to decide whether I’m still an hourglass, as in my youth, or a rectangle shape. All the other guidelines I have found give a fixed number in inches/cm, that the waist must be (less than hips/shoulders/bust) for an hourglass, usually 6 or 8 inches. Your 25% less (than hips/shoulders/bust) for waist is much more useable, practical, and less arbitrary and can apply to any body. Sadly, I must now admit that I’m a rectangle!
Helpful! I found out that my wide shoulders make me an inverted triangle. Not a stick of celery. A problem is that to get sleeves long enough and shoulders that are wide enough to fit, the chest and torso are often too big on shirts, dresses, and blazers. I’m on the thin side. The ones that fit are treasures to keep. I have classics from 50 years ago that I still wear. Thank you.
Thanks Marie-Anne. I thought I was a pear but in fact I'm a rectangle with some waist definition (not enough to be an hourglass though!). Looking forward to learning how to dress for my shape.
I decided to double check as I may be evolving. I have noticed within the last few months a subtle change in my shape. I have not gained weight as I maintain my diet (South Beach) and have done so for the past few years (I do indulge on special occasions when we go out to dinner or lunch). The doctor's scale even showed a weight loss of two pounds. My clothes fit! The issue is I look larger at the upper thigh...not the hip...but the upper thigh. It could be the result of the changed hormones which may be finally settling in...but I looked and I thought..OMG! I am turning into Kim Kardashion. I was always a RECTANGLE. I could situate my waist any where...so I choose higher to make my legs look longer. I am very short waisted. So, I took out the measuring tape as you suggested... I am 35 1/2 inches at the shoulder 33 at the bust (I take a C cup so I go up to 34 bra and tighten it or a 33 bra and buy an extension) I have a 28 inch waist, 35 hip (at widest point) My eyes travel down...my hip goes in...and them boom...my upper thigh is 36 1/2. I was always athletic...biking, skating, running, dance, equestrian/posting, gymnastics, weight training....my legs were very muscular. Tall boots are tough to find and I cannot wear flats as my calves are muscular. I am thinking that is the issue. After knee surgery, I walk 6-8 miles a day as I can no longer run or do high impact sports. It was recommended that I walk and swim. I can't swim. So, I walk and occasionally ride a bike or horse. Do rectangles evolve into pears?
This method was an easy way to finally figure out what shape I am. My measurements tell me that I am really close to being an hourglass, but my shoulders are slightly wider than my hips. So ultimately that makes me an inverted triangle.
Yes, I am working on that. I have been purging my closet the past couple months. Getting rid of clothes that don't fit anymore, don't want anymore or do not look that good on me, etc. It is hard to do and this will help me knowing more about my body shape. Thanks
Hi Mary Ann. One’s again. Thank you so much for another great video. I’m rectangle shape, but the point is that you teaching me how to recognized a body shape. Love 💗 you channel, love 💗 you country and your culture, and I love 💕 you. I’m a Francophile. Take care 😘
I’ve been watching a lot of your videos, and I love them. I’ve always thought I was a pear, but after reflecting on what I’ve learned from your videos, I might be some kind of combination. My hips are wide, but my shoulders are fairly broad, too. I’ve never thought of myself as busty, but I guess I’m a tad larger than average. I do have a waist, but it’s short. And my belly is starting to resemble an apple. I guess it’s time to break out the tape measure! 😄
I'm definitely a pear, and I'm short. I have to take both of those into consideration. Just today, I saw a recommendation that said, "Every body type looks good in this." They were paperbag shorts. Nope, I don't even have to try them on to know better than that! They would look funny on my body type.
I have always been an hourglass, but I tend to gain weight on the bottom, so sometimes I look more like a pear. It is only the difference between 5-10lbs though
Jan..if it's of any interest..I was trying on something in Burberry. And it was rather tight on the shoulders, and I'm quite slim and 56..the assistant told me that as one gets older if you previously had an hourglass figure..you 'develop' that shape..get wider on the shoulders..(ughh!!!). . She's an ex fashion model and she has the same thing. Told me that she used to wear size 8-10...it sucks, but that's life...😶
I've recently lost a lot of weight, and discovered your channel a month or so ago in an attempt to figure out how to update my personal style for my new body! I'm 45 and have been a pear most of my adult life, but most of my weight loss has been in my waist and below, so my shoulders/bust and hips are now much closer than they once were. That said, at 39/39/32/42 I'm not quite a mathematical hourglass on top, and looking in the mirror my hips are still visibly broader than my shoulders. Seems like my best bet is to keep using my lifelong Pear tricks (plus a few new ones I've learned from you!), but maybe do more to bring out my relatively trim waistline. Thanks for what you do to make fashion accessible to all of us!
Indeed, they always gap at the back. NYDJ jeans I've found are the nearest fit and then there's always resorting to a dressmaker to make them fit properly.
My Levis wedgie straight fit look good on me....think Monroe in the 50s! These seem to be smaller waisted with wider hips. Also Levis high rise straight.
Hello Marie Anne. Would you consider making a video about socks and stockings etc. Good choices for wearing with trousers and jeans. Just to make the whole subject a bit more exciting. Thank you. Suzanne
Wow, I always thought I was an apple... or maybe an inverted triangle... I just can't believe how off my perceptions were. Turns out my shoulders are almost down the millimetre the same size as my hips.. I have no idea why for years I thought I was "broad shouldered." I also had a completely wrong perception of my waist, which is not apple at all. Huh. I'm glad you asked us to take measurements because I had to re-do them 3x before I could believe what they were saying: I'm a rectangle!
This very helpful, and I agree with you, more objective. Personally, I found the detailed descriptors in Kibbe typing confusing and difficult. Thank you
View of the front, I thought I was slightly hourglass. I believe my measurements are rectangular (40/40/38/43). I will be following you with much interest to see how I can maximize the good while minimizing the not so good. I am 75 yo, with two adult daughters.
I am pleased to discover I am an hourglass, Marie-Anne! Very helpful information, as, for some reason, I’ve always seen myself as a pear somehow. I have a hard time visualizing what my shape is in the mirror for some reason, so I used the measuring tape method. My hips and shoulders are exactly the same, down to the exact inch. My waste is exactly 25% narrower. So I believe that makes me an hourglass. (If I’m seeing this correctly). Thank you for the great tutorial. 💖xx
Shoulders 36 1/2, buste 32, waist 28 1/2, hips 34. So, 36 1/2 / 32 / 28 1/2 and 34. Please, could you tell me what shape does it correspond to. Can a woman have a mix of 2 body shapes? Thank you ❣
I have a short torso. It is not the shape I had as a young woman and I am now 6cm shorter with a high round back, sloping shoulders and forward neck that I adjust for when making clothes, but am I an apple or a rectangle now?
So helpful! I always thought I was a pear (larger hips and tiny bust) - but I had never measured my shoulders! They are the same width as my hips. I am 37-32-26-37. So it turns out my shoulders are the same width as my hips! So now I'm confused! Can you be an hourglass if you have a very small bust, lol? Or possibly rectangle? My figure is generally athletic/angular, with a low hip and small bust. So even though I have an 11" difference between my waist and hip, the low hip makes the contrast with my waist appear lower / more gradual.
As I understand it, rectangles should consider styling one of two ways, create a waistline, or go for length. I choose the latter, as I do love the monochromatic look of one color, or group of tones together. The colors that suit me best are black, white, gray, navy, and red. I add visual interest with scarves. I prefer clean lines to ruffles, gathers, appliqués, and the like.
I am a pear, wide hips and prominent tighs, small bust. 5'7 tall, around 65 kg. But I also have wide shoulders, and an extra long torso (shorter legs, unfortunately. Proportions are up the wall 🙄). So it's not always easy to find clothes that fit me well.
I know I'm a pear, so my shoulders and bust measurement are less than my hips, but my waist is small in comparison to my hips. Thank you, useful info then you can dress accordingly 😄
@@MarieAnneLecoeur Thanks Marie-Anne. To improve my shape, I need to learn ways to minimize my tummy ( visually and weight loss) and lengthen my legs (what style trousers and skirt). I have a long torso. Can you point me to your videos that my help me. thanks again Marilyn
I am an hourglass with a VERY long waist and VERY athletic shoulders. Finding tailored shirts and jackets is a nightmare for me. Everything is too short in the waist, making my hips look too wide, and too tight in the shoulders/back. I feel like I am in a straightjacket when I wear tailored tops and jackets.
My biggest issue with these types of "body type" advice is that it is primarily from the front view. I look like one shape from the front and like another shape from the SIDE. As 3D creatures, purely using measurements and front views do not work for all bodies.
I'm an hourglass! I've been hidden under the fifty pounds I have lost in the last seven months! My hip bones are wider since having babies but there is definitely some definition there at last! still I have fifty pounds to lose.

@@MarieAnneLecoeur Working through it right now! Very useful.
Merci Marie-Anne for the worksheets. They were very helpful and I now see that I am a rectangle 😀
Bonjour, chère Marie-Anne! Loving this new video! Merci!
I think I am an hour glass, slender. At 65 years old. With belly!!! How to hide it?
Hourglass! And finding jeans is an absolute nightmare.
same here!
Yes!! Sooo frustrating! I always have to tailor the waist of my jeans!
Indeed, they always gap at the back. NYDJ jeans I've found are the nearest fit and then there's always resorting to a dressmaker to make them fit properly.
@@MarieAnneLecoeur My pleasure. Marie-Anne xx
My Levis wedgie straight fit look good on me....think Monroe in the 50s! These seem to be smaller waisted with wider hips. Also Levis high rise straight.
Marie- Anne thank you for the tips.
Hello Marie Anne. Would you consider making a video about socks and stockings etc. Good choices for wearing with trousers and jeans.
Just to make the whole subject a bit more exciting. Thank you. Suzanne
I am a rectangle. Really enjoy your videos!
I used to be hourglass. Now I'm a rectangle apple. Depends on the time of the month. 😊
It confirmed what I already "figured" - a rectangle. Thank you!
@@MarieAnneLecoeur I have been following you and reading your books for a while so, "Yes!" Thank you!
Very, very helpful!! Rectangle here!
Hourglass . Thankyou for that. So nice and simple!
@@MarieAnneLecoeur 🥰
Hi im hourglass, plz do video on summer clothes for all ages im 40. Thanks x
I'm kind of an hour glass and an apple because I need to lose 30lbs lol
Wow, I always thought I was an apple... or maybe an inverted triangle... I just can't believe how off my perceptions were. Turns out my shoulders are almost down the millimetre the same size as my hips.. I have no idea why for years I thought I was "broad shouldered." I also had a completely wrong perception of my waist, which is not apple at all. Huh. I'm glad you asked us to take measurements because I had to re-do them 3x before I could believe what they were saying: I'm a rectangle!
I needed to get 49 years and watch your Video to recognise that I have not a pear- but an hourglass-shape... thanks a lot, Marie-Anne! 😘
You are very welcome Karina 😃 now you need to learn your style objectives x
@@MarieAnneLecoeur yes indeed 😁
This very helpful, and I agree with you, more objective. Personally, I found the detailed descriptors in Kibbe typing confusing and difficult. Thank you
Im def a regtangle. But pretty happy with it!
Rectangu-licious just like me 😃
Hour glass! Love you! Marie Anne
Hourglass-tastic Denise 😃 now you need to find your style objectives 😘
I am really enjoying your videos , thankyou.
I am a pear 🍐 as soon as I put on weight it goes straight to my thighs, and as soon as I take it off it comes straight off my bust 🤦🏻♀️😳
Me too! lol Amazing how it's the bust that leaves first.
Same. It is so frustrating!
Same here :-D Team pear yeahhhh
Gosh same here, with the bust and thighs... However, my shoulders are still wide.
Great video 💛
💖xx
Thank you!
😘
Very useful, thank you ! 😊
I’m def hourglass⌛️...I love watching all ur tips! (That striped dress is gorgeous btw💗)💐
Hourglass and I love it!
Delighted to realise I am a rectangle 😄😄Always thought I was an apple … tummy still needs some toning though
Rectangle Thanks 🙏
I hope I did it right. I took the measurements in my clothes. But if m not wearing anything bulky at all.
Thank you for this! Now I am pretty sure I am a rectangle.
Thankyou
Hourglass I think. SHOULDERS 42" CHEST 41" WAIST 36" HIPS 42" I am 5'9" I just weeded my garden. 6 more items have moved on. Tnx.
Shoulders 36 1/2, buste 32, waist 28 1/2, hips 34. So, 36 1/2 / 32 / 28 1/2 and 34. Please, could you tell me what shape does it correspond to. Can a woman have a mix of 2 body shapes? Thank you ❣
Yes
I am an apple, short (155cm), elderly (76) and I sew my own clothes because very few stores stock clothes that fit and flatter.
My shoulders, bust and waist all measure 105, and my hips measure 112 with a flat bottom.
I have a short torso. It is not the shape I had as a young woman and I am now 6cm shorter with a high round back, sloping shoulders
and forward neck that I adjust for when making clothes, but am I an apple or a rectangle now?
Looks like you are a Rectangle 👍 definitely not an Apple
Hourglass! Thanks
Still a solid rectangle!
Thanks! Hourglass🤓
Great video and sound all ok now X
I am a pear, wide hips and prominent tighs, small bust. 5'7 tall, around 65 kg. But I also have wide shoulders, and an extra long torso (shorter legs, unfortunately. Proportions are up the wall 🙄). So it's not always easy to find clothes that fit me well.
Thank you for this video. I have never measured my proportions as you show . I am now officially a pear 🍐. X
I know I'm a pear, so my shoulders and bust measurement are less than my hips, but my waist is small in comparison to my hips. Thank you, useful info then you can dress accordingly 😄
Thanks Marie-Anne at 69, I finally know my shape. I was an hourglass when younger but am now a rectangle with a long torso
Just found your free ecourse !! There's a time delay for us as I am in the opposite time zone in NZ
Thank you, I am a rectangular :))
Definitely pear
I’m a rectangle!
Thank you for the explanation! What if the shoulders are wider than the hip, but the bust is narrower than the hip?
I have this too.
Me too!
@@MarieAnneLecoeur will do!
Honestly, I haven't got a clue! How can this be so hard? A cross between an inverted triangle an apple and an hourglass.
My biggest issue with these types of "body type" advice is that it is primarily from the front view. I look like one shape from the front and like another shape from the SIDE. As 3D creatures, purely using measurements and front views do not work for all bodies.
Plus sized rectangle.
Shoulders 41, bust 34, waist 27, hips 39. I think hourglass 🥰
Thank you I just found out am a large hourglass :-)
Bonjour Marie. I am a rectangle
This was very helpful. Im a inverted triangle. Thank you Marianne.
