I was a sportswriter for 20 years (ESPN, New York Times) and I struggled to find medical experts to explain injuries half as well and clearly as you do. You do an incredible service for fans looking for smart analysis of medical issues, and the way you turn around these videos so fast after the news is staggering. Bravo, Doc.
It's wild when I read the report for WB last night but I didn't know Scottie's was pretty much the same. Appreciate the early morning update video Doctor! Edited: looks like all the bots are awake too

Most likely going to be a season-ender for Scottie which is a shame, but no point rushing back to a team not even in the play-in. Really hope for Russ that he isn't sidelined for too long! Thanks as always for a great explanation!
I think Barnes may have broke his hand before this play. If you go back and look at a previous play he seemed to have injured it then. It may have only been a hairline fracture and then consequently caused more damage in the play you have shown.
Not sure if you feel like doing another video, but there was a play a bit earlier in the Toronto game where Barnes received a pass and then was wincing as he held the ball, shaking his hand. What happened in this incident seemed to compound the injury there. Thanks for your insight and passion for these topics, as always.
They mentioned Barnes in some pain during the broadcast, but they said it was his right hand (before this incident). Not sure if that's what you're talking about, but most likely.
These should not be problematic injuries. When we hear about ACL, Achilles tears and meniscal tears (like Embiid and Zion Williamson)-these are bad and really impact careers. Same thing with foot fractures for big men, where the weight-bearing issue and chronic excessive forces are a big deal. Regarding healing times on fractures in general-electric stimulation has been proven to decrease time to healing, but is often not offered to non-athletes because of cost (and initially paucity of efficacy evidence-which is changing) I expect healing times for expensive NBA talent to be lower than general population.
3:08 makes sense it's the 3rd metacarpal that broke since you can see Barnes index finger made it past Green's shin bone. While the remaining 3 fingers get caught by the leg.
Brian please answer this important sports medicine question. What happens back in cave man days if you have a full achilles rupture? Would it hurt forever? Would your muscle die? Would it get infected?
@@BrianSuttererMDis it possible to have a small tear and still be able to play sports? I messed up my Achilles in some way when I was young and it’s never been the same, chronically sore and pretty stiff. Idk what I did to it
Ohhh yea. It’s also been a while since I made a video, so this one was more rushed and ‘just get one up’ than usual :/. Glad everyone pointed out the mistake
Scotty Barnes had no chance of blocking that but he already made the decision to jump and try before the shot was made. If the golden state player decided to do a fake and reverse layup then he would have had a good chance to block it. People can’t make decisions that quickly and we only have the benefit of slow motion replay.
Looks like the left hand for both. Can they both practice shooting during their recovery, using their left hand in a cast to help position/guide the ball?
Barnes and his teammate were both executing on the "impress the coach with late-hustle to make up for us completely blowing our defensive assignments" strategy. Neither had any play on the ball or the player, but they needed to look like they were full of hustle and athleticism. Don't want to get benched!
That's how they play, all Raptors play with pace and hustle without quit. Scottie is the Raps' franchise guy. Quickley is the second/third option. Both are starters, neither are worried about getting benched lol.
This is why you don't see many real fights in the NBA anymore, just fyi. Just looootttsss of posturing and fake "hhhoollld me baacckkk!" Moments. It's because these guys get paid tens and even HUNDREDS of millions to play a sport with their hands. And to punch something (especially another dense bone, like a skull) with said hand is incredibly stupid.

Agreed 💯
Great job you have.

Now this OS what I call accountability. Keep it up Doc!
My two favorite players in the league and both out in one night
Gsw always injure opponents . But nobody says shit
Doc hadn't drank all his coffee yet when he made the first video! Appreciate the updated video doc.
Prayers to Scottie and Westbrook🙏
Once Barnes went out, people saw how reliant they are on his creation and playmaking. TIME TO TANK BOYS
Weren't you tanking all season?

No worries doc. The other day I pumped $15 of gas but forgot to bring my wallet. Boy was I embarrassed. 😣😣😣
what did you do to remedy the situation?
where on earth do they let you pump before paying? It's prepay in every state in the U.S.
@@BirdPlan idk im from new jersey the wage slave usually does it for me🤷🏼♂️
And in Canada too. But there are other countries ya know lmao
@@BirdPlanalmost every gas station in Canada you can just start pumping. Why the extra hassle to be prepay ONLY.
Damn that Scotty one was brutal. It's a shame to see young guys get injuries.
Thx for fixing with update vid doc!
Thanks Brian. Good vid.
This channel is great! Great content
I think you're allowed a "goof-up" Brian, considering the next-level content you provide steadily!

Mistake or not, you posted the initial diagnosis and correction before I knew about either of these injuries.

Don’t know much about these kind of breaks but I had boxer breaks. Hope the best and quick recovery for Scottie

Would eventually scar in but probably so poorly that you’d have a significant limp and be unable to run or walk far.

Scottie is so fun to watch but extremely unpleasant to look at when he’s in pain
It takes maturity to admit when one makes a mistake. Video liked 👍🏿
Me and Scottie rode the short bus to school together
I was on the same bus with you both
Barnes' didn't look bad, and Westbrooks' looked even less traumatic. Should have limbered up before "hand."
You should do a video about Pacio vs Brooks 2 and the dangers of spiking the opponent's head.
do you think running in general is bad for your knees or feet or anything?
There's really a big difference when you haven't finished your coffee.
Ohhh yea. It’s also been a while since I made a video, so this one was more rushed and ‘just get one up’ than usual :/. Glad everyone pointed out the mistake
Hope Russ and Scottie are ok and get a fast recovery 😢
Mea Culpa. I love it.
I swear he gets the nba injury script ahead of time every year

Hey doc great vid, I was wondering if you could explain to me a distal radius fracture/ growth plate fracture if you could? thanks
Please analyze the Diakhaby injury from Madrid vs Valencia last night
lol @ me having that Flint Tropic's jersey.
I feel his pain having surgery on my 5th metacarpal next Wednesday
Could we get a breakdown of Mouctar Diakhabys horribel leg injury against Real Madrid?
Great video, again! Would love to hear your thoughts on Diakhaby injury vs Real Madrid (player from Valencia)
Hey I'm going to see the clippers are on March 22nd, any chance russ is back for that game ?
I didn't even notice that at the game last night with Scottie Barnes I seen he left the game early and never came back but dam that looks painful
I swear scotties head looks like its on the wrong body 😂
I'm wondering if this is more of a ligamentous avulsion at the head. I can't wrap my head around forced causing a pure metacarpal fx here in SBs case.
Both on my fantasy team😢SO TUFF
As a general rule of... first metacarpal 😏
It looked like Scottie was holding that hand and examining it earlier in the game too, I wonder if it was telated
If you ever broke your hand you know that shit is some unbearable pain well wishes to them
Reportedly successful surgery. How many weeks for a prof athletes with top grade rehab to have recovery
What’s your analysis on Booker’s ankle sprain last night. It was bit of a weird one.
Yesterday got out of hand hahahahahahahand
Scottie's injury was so bizarre. Freak accident.
Don't people call it the middle finger?
Does consistent boxing actually make your metacarpals denser the same way jumping or running makes your tibias and femurs denser?
Probably going to be a new epidemic going around all the players...from all the signatures needed requesting "time off due to an undisclosed injury".
NO MORE AUTISM ALLEGATIONS. Biggest lost of the season coming from a Sixers fan who lost Embiid 😭
Looks like the left hand for both. Can they both practice shooting during their recovery, using their left hand in a cast to help position/guide the ball?
Aw hell
0:20 oh so you’re telling me you’re actually human? We all make mistakes
Counting on this to know whats going on the westbrook
At least its both left hands

Watch Scottie come back a better three shooter. I mean he is going to have to relearn a few things why not doing it during the recovery process.

Finger/ hand injuries f*ckin suck
the kick-out shit NBA players do is just dumb.
Care to comment on the prevailing allegations about Barnes?
what allegation
Don't buy into it, but people say he's "acoustic". I'm not trying to say the actual name because Scottie stated himself that he is not.

3:58 Haha He called the index finger 1st metacarpal just after he explained why it's the 2nd metacarpal, when talking about angles of breaks.
