As a hobby 'sewist,' I have always loved vintage sewing ephemera and buttons, and so I watched this video. The video, though, had a wonderful surprise for me. My husband has his ancestor's Union button. After watching your video I called him and asked if the button has a letter in the middle. "Yes, it has a C." He was so excited to add a piece of information to his ancestor's history. He had no idea his ancestor was in the cavalry. Thank you for this video!

Definitely well timed video. In all that stuff I got over the weekend, there's a few large jars full of buttons, which included a handful of military buttons as well.
Then there also is a bunch of mother of pearl shell, abalone and such. Looking into those now.
    Thanks again Don!

I find literally 100s of buttons with my metal detector, I have tubs full of them, I've never thought of them as valuable , some early single piece buttons especially military are worth a couple of quid to a collector
,I find so many when im hunting for Celtic, Roman, Saxon, medieval coins and artifacts..
I have a few single peice buttons with USA and a crude eagle stamped on them .
My favourites are 18th century British military buttons, from the time wealthy people could afford their own private militia.
    I have 2 with 95 ( 95th rifles) my absolute favourites.
And a rare Scottish militia buckle from the Sutherland Highlanders, late 1700s .
    My favourite buckle .
I'll have to go through my collection and clean them to see if I have any other interesting ones among the others .
I have some USA buttons 2 piece made by British button makers .
If I knew someone local I'd rather give them all my old ice cream tubs full of my buttons, bc I know I'll never get to going through them
I still have tubs full of Roman bronze coins I haven't sorted through yet , I always do the silver coins first ,

Very interesting stuff. I have a button (or perhaps more likely a pin) that I've been trying to find a value on (not military, but I dug it in South Carolina). It's 2 piece and has a fancy E with a C around it. From looking high and low on the internet, I believe it to be from "Christian Endeavor," an organization founded in the late 1800's. I found some prototype drawings or something that had a similar look, and I also found a pic of an old flyer that advertised selling Christian Endeavor pins that were gold or silver plated, so I'm guessing mine was at one time... but I cannot find a pic anywhere of pin/button exactly like mine. Maybe I need to find an antiques Roadshow lol

What a great video. So did British and German buttons follow the same guidelines? I love learning from you.

    • @TheAuctionProfessor
      @TheAuctionProfessor  3 роки тому +2

No they do not. British and German buttons are also vastly different from each other. Each county followed somewhat of there own path. Buttons of a specific country are usually made in that country. English companies though do make buttons for many other countries as did several U.S. companies. They do have similar construction technics for similar periods to some extent.

So I was born n raised in Tacoma Wa that's between two military bases Bangor nuclear sub base and for Lewis. I come across all kinds of costs and military buttons all the time. Any time is see them I get them and I've actually found more on coats in dumpsters than in a store because the jackets and such are usually ratted out or smell or have damage or whatever but I don't wanted to ask if you could do more videos on buttons. Even non military buttons as i have plenty of those as well. Maybe come out with your own button book I know you neee pictures but you could cherry pick slightly under priced buttons for sale take all the pics then just resell them for same cost or a little more for like interest or whatever cuz you picked the better ones and even if you resell them at cost or slight loss the money you'd make from book sales would supplement them. Just a thought. I'd buy a copy and if the other books are 800-1200 for the set you can basically provide all the info in your own words n pics and sell them for 250 or whatever is far cheaper than the alternative. Anyways I'd buy a copy and I'm sure any button collector would do the same

After watching this video, I understand that the Hessian buttons I sent you pictures of, are just reproductions. There is no marking on the back. Would Hessian soldiers wear uniforms made in the USA? Or would Britain have supplied them? Did uniforms for Hessian soldiers follow the same guidelines. These buttons are reproductions ...maybe worth $1 each or less are for reenactments. Is there a market?

Hessians in general is a term for German soldiers conscripted by their prince to auxiliary positions for the British Empire in the 18th century. Germany wasn't a unified country at that time, and their buttons mostly were made in several German states in that time period. They would all be 1 Piece coin style buttons made mostly of cast pewter, and they are extremely rare in any condition.

I have 10 marine buttons from the Civil War, from my Great great-grandfather. I'm going to go get it appraised. Plus I have his marine cap. Grandpa bunked with McKinley before McKinley became President. Rutherford B. Hayes Company. Is it worth looking into? I have the newspaper article too.
