Same. Have seen all these movies and you're right about how he's so good he disappears. Will go back and rewatch. Thanks for your respect and integrity in this...The world needs more of you.
I have watched The Godfather Parts I and II 4 times. Each time I had an entirely different perspective on each of the characters and the movie as a whole. The first was when I was about 16 years old. I identified mostly with Michael and thought of him as a heroic protagonist in a dramatic Mafia film. I thought of Fredo as a jealous, weak, cowardly brother who had betrayed his family. The most recent time was a few months ago with my wife (it was her first time). Watching it with her completely changed my views on Michael and Fredo. She viewed Michael with disdain at the man that he had become (similar to Kate). Near the end of part II when he had sent Fredo to his death she said "your Father would be disappointed with you." That's the visceral effect that John Cazale's Fredo had on her. Michael had betrayed Fredo and the family; Fredo paid for it in blood but Michael would be haunted by it for the rest of his life. Powerful performances by stalwart actors.
If memory serves me correctly, Fredo betrayed Michael to Johnny Ola and Roth for some undisclosed reward. That's why he received the kiss of death from Michael after he drunkenly slipped out that he met Roth, inadvertently admitting that he lied to Michael's face when Fredo told him that he hadn't. Less sympathy for Fredo there, personally. Despite Fredo's betrayal, Michael's hands will never be clean. He still has to deal with the fact that he killed one of his own brothers. It's difficult to say whether or not their father really wouldn't have "dealt" with a family traitor in the same way that Michael did.
Im 62 yrs old now. Starting from when i was in middle school my parents grudgingly let me go see grown up movies. I wrote almost the same thing. See my comment above.
I am from England & I always had seen john Cazale in what were at the time referred to as great movies. I really liked him & I think the British audience did to. Even if we honestly didn't know who his name was apart from the characters he so skilfully played. I think that in itself is a testament to his wonderful, subtle acting & what must have been to those who knew him, an endearing personality that will permeate throughout their lives & ours forever - thank you John & God bless!
you nailed it! watching him in the Godfather series, i just thought THAT was who he was and chalked it up to solid role for him. I gotta see Dog Day Afternoon again- it's been years
That was a master class in creating a meaningful biography from found sources. No substitute for genuine respect and affection. Just the right bit of exposition about the Man. Nice work.
I never got extremely into the Godfather movies(but love Goodfellas), but I can tell you Cazale's performance in Dog Day Afternoon demonstrates his acting skills. It's almost surreal how good his performance is. Like what was said, you cant even tell he's acting!
What an amazing video. You made a video about someone (John) who not but a few months ago was wondering “what ever happened to this amazing actor?”….this was excellent to watch. This gentleman certainly deserved a lot of recognition.
Well, I knew it was John Cazale from the age of 13, when "The Godfather" premiered on TV. And I never forgot his name... Some of us were just into great films like TG1 and 2, and movies like "The Conversation", because we became big fans of Francis... John Cazale has a special place in Heaven; all the other stars there come to *his* table to chat... ❤
Just watched The Conversation at the old Freda Cinema in Santa Ana. Thanks for the refresher on his greatness, he was always at that slight unease, like he knew secrets. 🎭
The most underrated actor of out time. Al and John clicked when they starred in the movie together. Same with Bob in the Deer Hunter. His acting abilities were natural. He needed no directions.
Seeing Pacino have to compose himself when speaking of John is so sad. You can see as he begins to remember the dreams he decides it is just for him and John. You can see he had a true friendship and admiration of John. And by all means ask any of us here and we will all know that is a picture of John Cazale one of the most brilliant actors ever. And as others have said. We all missed out on amazing performances. Yet we still have 5 amazing examples of his amazing abilities.
I gave my ex wife five examples of me in the form of kids and they all turned out to be duds. I was firing the BS then. By firing I mean I should have wiped those off my knuckles and gave another specimen that was a lot better
This is one of those rare videos where the information given makes one feel like they already knew it deep down, but has finally surfaced and become whole. Rewatching these for sure. Thank you.
A small, but magnificient filmography. He was a supremely gifted actor, the kind that rarely becomes famous, on account of them being so natural, so authentic in their acting. May he rest in peace.
It's really great that you actually shed some light on this amazing (yet MAJORLY underrated) actor!! I REALLY wish he hadn't been taken from us so soon! He TRULY WAS a "GREAT ACTOR"!! R.I.P. John Cazale! 🙏 8/12/1935 -- 3/13/1978
I was 13 when The Godfather Part I came out, and I knew everyone's name but Cazale's. After Part II, I knew who he was, and after Dog Day, he became someone I expected to see in the top films of the time. But after the Deer Hunter, I could never forget him, his performances, or his name. He was without doubt, one of our greatest actors.
A great actor, taken from us far too soon. We all know these films would have struggled without his influence. It's a shame when a great actor has to die to get recognition for his brilliance. You have been recognised John, job well done. You will go down in history as one of our best. Hollywood is short of a great star without you. God rest your soul, thank you for entertaining us, God bless you!
People throw the term tragic is thrown around a lot, but in Johns case it completely applies. An incredible talent lost to a terrible disease. In addition, what DeNiro did for him is just so solid beyond words. Thanks for making this video.
Thank you so much for making this tribute to John Cazale. You are absolutely right, he's acting is off the chart. The Godfather is one of the best stories ever book and film's. I admit that I overlooked the performance of John Cazale. How could I miss this. Because he's magical at acting I guess. In a league of his own. Once again, thank you so much!
Oddly enough, it was his acting in Godfather that gave the realism. Brando was larger than life, Duvall was the explainer. Pacino was the groomed one. But when you look at all of Freddo’s scenes, they felt like reality.
Duvall has always been that boring mentor in every family that speaks a lot of wisdom, but sadly, no one follows the advice because he's so damn boring, lol
Finally, someone who pays tribute to John Cazale. I know of him since for the first time I watched The Godfather, as my own dad would always bring him up in conversations about great actors. In a world of junk cinema, instagram, the kardashians, and CNN, where mediocrity is not just shown but adored by the more and more ignorant masses, a person and actor such as John Cazale does not belong. John, you'll always be in the heart and mind of TRUE people. R.I.P
I remember my mom and dad talking about this actor and I remember instantly liking him when I'd see him on screen. Later on when I REALLY got into filmmaking around 11 I started doing as much research on the guy as possible. Wonderful play actor. He came from theater. And hearing how he passed broke my heart. I love Meryl Streep for threatening the production of deer hunter shed quit if they fired John, which they wanted to do because the cancer was literally taking him and he was sick.
@@barry4649 I was different. I was making movie shorts as a kid, trying to write scripts for my friends so at 11 I was breaking down characters and plots and stuff. They figured it was better letting me watch these films than going out and joining gangs or something. Of course they were also just lazy crappy parents so.... Lazy crappy parents? The world isn't peaches friend.
@@barry4649 oh gosh. As a kid of the seventies, we weren't watched over like hawks, ran around the town and country before 11 and watched whatever we felt like....movies would play on the tv and we would get engrossed until realizing it was The Exorcist or Carrie...or Star Wars. ..into the 80s. We would be horrified and not sleep for weeks or just laugh it off as not real. Parents would get upset but it would be too late. On Thanksgiving each year the network would play DELIVERANCE on our main station. The first time we all thought it was a Thanksgiving movie...."Deliverance from evil...etc." And then the rape scene went by and none of us knew what it meant. Parents would say, "Don't worry it's not real. It's just a movie." Parental guidance back then for all of us was, "Don't worry, it's just a movie. It's not real." That was the extent of the parental guidance. We survived. Mostly. Lots of nightmares. And then more education came about with ratings and such. Many people just don't know the effects of tv other than it may scare you or give you bad dreams. Sadly. Tvs would just be in the basement or be used to babysit us and we would just watch whatever. Our tvs were still black and white and mostly fuzzy. So we could barely tell what was happening. We had to hold the antenna to get better reception. Our tvs were not high definition. I think we got colour in the late 70s or so. Anyways, as time went on more education helped. In fact, Friday night was horror night and parents would give us popcorn, pizza, and pop to watch Squirm or Food of the Gods...etc. It was for fun! Around 11 years old for sure or younger even. Cheers.
@@ammagnolia it's interesting. I agree. I think a lot of us are saying. Ok. We can radically accept others. Got it. We can be your friend and still maybe not understand your ideas or personhood totally. We can at least observe and listen and try to understand each other. If not. At least be respectful. But. Once we got that squared away. Why are people so soft? Many people are asking the same questions from all sides. Acceptance doesn't mean you can't JOKE, have fun, or be less serious. Some people from all sides just want to laugh again and maybe even make fun of each other again in a polite way or even a dark way. Are people ready for comedians or whatever to "cross the line"? I think a lot of people don't care. They just get upset if a specific person in the audience was targeted. And the joke drags out on hurting them directly. The issue is....that's where a lot of comedy gold exists. Lol. We all have a button they can push too far. Lol. Sometimes people find it funny to watch someone get all upset in the audience. But, I think comedians will figure it out and bring back a whole new line of work. It's happening already. Anyways. Talking is better than fighting. People just gotta talk it over. Or they are not meant for comedy halls. Comedy is a special, magical thing to witness. And then you go home and think about why the comedian "got you thinking". They are usually planning quite the intelligent trip. And showing the world what they sound and look like on the daily. Lol.
My daughter noticed him in Dog Day Afternoon a year ago and liked him even more than Al Pacino. We have only recently become big fans of his. I wish he was still with us, who knows what other great films he would have been cast in.
Thank you for this incredible look at such an amazing man. Testimony that you can actually be staring at a diamond and not even know it. Again, thank you for your kind insight and truly eye opening portrayal. What a great job.
Well done, sir. Thank you. My formative years were the 70s. Maybe my first year of middle school Dog Day Afternoon was an NBC' movie of the week. Cazale's performance in Dog Day Afternoon has stayed with me my whole life. He does indeed become the character. Pacino's performance is great. The whole cast is great. And then there is this guy "Sal" and this unconscious conversation starts in my kid's brain: "Wait, is this a documentary? Am I watching a home movie? No, that dude's an actor. He is acting. No. No? Really?" Master.
Why would he ever need to star in any more than five masterpieces even if he had he lived longer. Starring in one masterpiece is an astounding achievement but no less than 5 is simply ace.
I remember when they announced John's death here in the UK. At the time I was a young kid and was only vaguely aware of who he was because my aunt loved the Godfather. Only when I was older that I then began to know and appreciate his incredible work. John Cazale we lost you too soon.
John Cazale's problem is the human nature of the viewer, he was so good at shining a light on his co-star, helping them reach peak acting, he effectively almost takes himself out of the conversation. He was such a great actor and student of the art. What an absolute legend.
a really well made video. Thank you so much! you mention all the things about John Cazale that have fascinated and moved me for a long time. especially the comparison of the two film characters is impressive. it is actually unbelievable that it is one and the same actor. I still hope that Cazale receives an Oscar posthumously. What makes him so mystical is also the fact that there is not a single video of him as a private person.
Hell Yeah, you nailed it. I agree that his being less recognized as an actor is actually an homage to his great skill. He so completely became Fredo, etc. that the actor John completely didn't exist for the audience. Perfect. Imagine these films without him - wow!
Cool that he's been getting more recognition now, that's an awesome resume from him, and this video pays great tribute to him. Especially loved that moment where Al Pacino recalls his dreams, and John is present with him once again. I don't know much about his story, but from where I'm standing it seems like he got overlooked because he wasn't handsome enough. His physique didn't tell you that he was a movie star. But if he'd lived on, he would've got more recognition over time.
Thank you for this. I remember watching Dog Day Afternoon and was in awe of Cazale's performance. I agree that it's a farce that he wasn't nominated for a supporting Oscar.
I remember reading about Cazale and the completion insurance for The Deer Hunter. Meryl Streep was singled out as the prime advocate for him. They knew he was dying but they went to bat for him. A fitting tribute for an amazing actor.
According to IMDB,his movie career only started in 1972 and lasted 6 years until 1978 after he passed away. He may have starred in other movies had he lived long enough. He died of lung cancer shortly after finishing "The Deer Hunter" in 1978.He was 42 years old.

On the bright side i always knew that he was John Cazale, i knews his name, since i was a big movie buff even in my teens. He was great and as you've said: You see the characters and not him.
I truly am grateful for this tribute. John Cazale remains one of my favourite actors. He has been overlooked for far too long.
What incredible loyalty he had from his friends.
You are absolutely right. He immersed so seamlessly into his roles, each character was a whole, fully-formed human person. Can't and won't forget John Cazale.
John Cazale is an actor for all the ages to remember. A master at his craft.
Thanks for this video. I didn't know Cazale's name or story but I will remember it now. May his memory and legacy live on and receive the appreciation it deserves!
I watched both so many tomes I forgot to count and John Cazal was a damn good actor. Damn good
He helped in an assassination attempt on Michael
As a kid in the ‘70s, I was always very aware of his amazing credits.
RIP John Cazale. One of the greats!
Im 62 yrs old now. Starting from when i was in middle school my parents grudgingly let me go see grown up movies. I wrote almost the same thing. See my comment above.
Many forgotten gems in the movie world. Thank you for this. He was a great actor.
This is fantastic work, love this about UA-cam - being able to find pieces of work like this
Yep, something I didn’t know that I needed and wanted to know.
YES!
I'm glad they allowed him to do the Deer Hunter, that's one of my favorite films
The Big Libowski!
What a heartfelt tribute. Well done.
This was amazing to learn.
I too was one of those who only knew the characters, never the actor, the man.
Thank you.
RIP John👍
Grand risings. Liked and subscribed. Thank you kindly. I also shared.
you nailed it! watching him in the Godfather series, i just thought THAT was who he was and chalked it up to solid role for him. I gotta see Dog Day Afternoon again- it's been years
The talent on Godfather all stated that Cazale was the best of them. Great video. Had me tearing up. I love John's work.
That was a master class in creating a meaningful biography from found sources. No substitute for genuine respect and affection. Just the right bit of exposition about the Man. Nice work.
Finally, somebody who has the appreciation for what this man was capable of. Thank you for making this vid.
I never got extremely into the Godfather movies(but love Goodfellas), but I can tell you Cazale's performance in Dog Day Afternoon demonstrates his acting skills. It's almost surreal how good his performance is. Like what was said, you cant even tell he's acting!
finally! ive been dying to see a john cazale appreciation post for so long 😭 he deserves better and i feel like he's robbed off everything
What an amazing video. You made a video about someone (John) who not but a few months ago was wondering “what ever happened to this amazing actor?”….this was excellent to watch. This gentleman certainly deserved a lot of recognition.
Thank you to pay tribute to a wonderful actor, his character as Fredo was amazing. Pure talent
Great vid. I fell in love with this actor recently. RIP YOU LEGEND *JOHN CAZALE*
Always overlooked him. I will never again. Thanks.
He was an incredible character actor that we all miss and feel cheated not knowing what he would become.
He’s so good and so under appreciated. Al Pacino publicly admits he learned so much from John. Thank you for this video.
The most underrated actor of out time. Al and John clicked when they starred in the movie together. Same with Bob in the Deer Hunter. His acting abilities were natural. He needed no directions.
I saw this video last year... and, it really stuck with me. I decided to watch it again - your love and appreciation is infectious.
8/12/1935 -- 3/13/1978
I was 13 when The Godfather Part I came out, and I knew everyone's name but Cazale's. After Part II, I knew who he was, and after Dog Day, he became someone I expected to see in the top films of the time. But after the Deer Hunter, I could never forget him, his performances, or his name. He was without doubt, one of our greatest actors.
He was great in both Godfather movies, but you are so right about Dog Day. His ability to not be 'just' Fredo was amazing.
That was incredibly well said an so creatively thoughtful, thank you
Thanks for this tribute to one of the all-time greats of cinema. Every moment he’s on the screen, all eyes are on John Cazale.
Nicely done! Long live John Cazale.
People throw the term tragic is thrown around a lot, but in Johns case it completely applies. An incredible talent lost to a terrible disease. In addition, what DeNiro did for him is just so solid beyond words. Thanks for making this video.
I love John. When he's on the screen with all these major stars, you can't take your eyes off him
Cazal is the ultimate acting legend in a way. Was never in a bad movie.
Well done on documenting this great actors work. This wasn’t a hagiography but a forensic examination in under 20 minutes. Excellent work.
Wonderful tribute to an amazing actor. Thank you for this.
A beautiful tribute to a damn fine actor. Thank you.
Amazing video! Thanks for making this.
Cazale was one of the best.
Thank you for a great tribute! He was a wonderful actor.
Meryl Streep (his girlfriend at the time) took care of him for months until his death. A class act.
Her only class act ever, lol.
What kind of parents did you have letting you watch those movies before 11? 😂
It's just a movie."
Parental guidance back then for all of us was, "Don't worry, it's just a movie.
Cheers.
@@randymulder9105 yeah theres some cool stuff about newer generations like tolerance and acceptance but they do seem a little more soft
Lol.
Thank you for paying tribute to this fine artist.
My daughter noticed him in Dog Day Afternoon a year ago and liked him even more than Al Pacino. We have only recently become big fans of his. I wish he was still with us, who knows what other great films he would have been cast in.
Who could ever forget Fredo and not feel deep sympathy. Fantastic actor, Mr. Cazale.
Great actor gone too soon🙏
Great work man, I was holding it together until Pacino starts to tear up...proud to say I own four of his five films...RIP John Cazale
Well as someone who had the looks it doest get better when you lose them. FR FR
I'm so glad this video exists. Thank you for highlighting this mans talent and his gift to us in his movie performances.
Thank you for this. I remember watching Dog Day Afternoon and was in awe of Cazale's performance. I agree that it's a farce that he wasn't nominated for a supporting Oscar.
Fantastic actor. I truly enjoyed his performances in Deer Hunter, The Godfather and of course, Dog Day Afternoon. Excellent work.
I remember reading about Cazale and the completion insurance for The Deer Hunter. Meryl Streep was singled out as the prime advocate for him. They knew he was dying but they went to bat for him. A fitting tribute for an amazing actor.
This man absolutely deserves his flowers!!! One of the greatest actors ever no debate!!
R.I.P John a great actor, but not forgotten 🙏🏻
Remembering someone is the greatest compliment anyone can give.
According to IMDB,his movie career only started in 1972 and lasted 6 years until 1978 after he passed away.
He may have starred in other movies had he lived long enough. He died of lung cancer shortly after finishing "The Deer Hunter" in 1978.He was 42 years old.
I think he would of and also would of became well known
er, we know... we watched the video.
