I will say this, if this game was never made, Kojima would bever have been motivated to make his Metal Gear sequel. So that's got to count for something.
When I hear people talk about how brilliant Hideo Kojima is, it's like hearing people talk about how funny Eddie Murphy is. Its true on the surface, but their best work is decades behind them now..
I had this game as a kid, but couldn't beat it because I couldn't figure out how to beat one of the final--not the FINAL one; I never got that far--bosses. There was a trick to it I couldn't figure out how to do correctly. It wasn't until a few years ago when I FINALLY beat it. That being said, I still loved played the game. It was fun, despite not being a "true" Metal Gear.
I love how snakes sprite kinda reflects his intro look: Big arms, huge torso, shoulders 3 times the size of his head, all the while carrying just this tiny little gun with both hands XD
Looking forward to this! I also agree this game is not bad… at least no more flawed than the OG NES Metal Gear. Music in the whole game is bangin’ regardless!
I remember the time you played the 'Merry Gear' Metal Gear game, that was funny AF! Thanks to you, Vlad, Dylan and any others who produce these videos ^_^ Hope you and everyone have a great Christmas/Holiday season!🎁
I always thought the music in this game was way catchier than the first game. Not that that's saying much since the original NES game only had like...six music tracks?
For historical context, the original _Metal Gear_ came out in 1987 in Japan and a year later in America. This came out in 1990, only a few months before the release of the "proper" sequel, _Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake._
He initially hated it, maybe just because it was made without his permission or involvement. He then later said it was a good game But the last he was asked about it he want back to disliking it
The serious manly Snake voice is back! I can't play any action game with male protagonist without thinking his voice should be like the one Jared does. So serious! ò.ó Yeah.
I think "having nothing to do with Kojima" is slightly untrue- (paraphrasing cus comment section) the game came to be because one of the developers for the game met Kojima in Japan after playing the first Metal Gear game, asking if Kojima would ever do a sequel. When Kojima said no, they got his blessing to do their own sequel. THEN seeing how bad it was, it inspired Kojima to then go and make the REAL Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
I only played the 'Legacy' collection for PS3, so it's interesting to see how apocryphal the Nintendo versions got, and we already got the sprite for some screwy lookin muscle guy that's ranked lieutenant. I won't spoil what I just read, but in the manual, and only in the manual, it says that the leader of the enemy forces is named Higharolla Kockamamie. No, seriously!
Hideo Kojima said himself that he likes the game, and I like it too. It's well designed and the reasons so many people bash it aside from the fact that it isn't cannon are ridiculous.
I remember when I saw this in a used game store waaaaaaaay back when. Was excited to pick it up. Brought it home and just made the ":0" face to the odd experience I was greeted to lol.
“I doubt any of you have seen a playthrough of this, or know anything about it” Well, I was fully aware of the kickass song that always plays outside well before this. But beyond that? Good read Jerd.
Having a Metal Gear playthrough in December is reminding me of the Merry Gear days :') This one I actually owned back in the day! And I thought this was the real Metal Gear 2 until MGS1 came out and the MG2 short story told me no
I didn't know their was more than one Metal Gear on the NES. So, when I saw your first playthrough of the original one, I was confused as it didn't look like I remembered... turns out it was this game that I had as a kid.
Oh Vlad was not kind with that flashback cut hahaha. This one is not familiar to me but it has already given lots of hilarious moments. Can't wait to see where this playthrough goes!
I like how, when you compare Snake's Revenge and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, you can see they both took inspiration from Metal Gear 1, but both fleshed out different parts. Imagine if the Metal Gear series developed in Snake's Revenge way instead of MG2.
Bad Metal gear!? If it wasn't for this Metal Gear none of the other would have been made. This is the Fanfiction that made the rest of the series possible!
Am disappointed there was no Vlad death counter... as it has been a long standing tradition to start death countering him from the start... or starting it when he mentions death counters.
I’m one of those that only knows of this as “the bad not Kojima Metal Gear” so this’ll be interesting seeing what makes it so “bad” as well as what all it has to offer.
@@GamingTeacher dont know man, if you compare It to other NES games. Mario, Kirby mega man. All of those we're extremely good, this Game on the other Hand is lacking good gamplay and polish in many ways
Oh snakes revenge!! This game it's pretty good! The music so kickass and the difficulty it's... weird....and gameplay tends to vary between overhead view to platformer and for me it's better than the nes first one(Wich i played via emulation years before o played this one)...i can play the first level without being noticed
I remember reading in an issue of Nintendo Power this was the game that actually got Hideo Kojima to make Metal Gear 2 as someone working on Snake's Revenge at Konami told him they were working on a sequel to the NES Metal Gear, but wished Kojima would make a REAL sequel...which led to Metal Gear Solid and beyond.
Not quite. He made Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Then when 3D game consoles came out he was intrigued at the prospects of more cinematic story telling. To get use to the new stuff he started making a 3D reimagining of Metal Gear 2 as it was considered the definitive stealth game. Through development this became the Metal Gear: Solid we all know, with some features and set pieces from Solid Snake still being used, like the staircases, or the radar and codec screen, or characters like Roy Campbell returning.
Wow! Jared must save so much money on getting takeout, because he's always full from eating his words! Joking aside, that starting part is always so brutal. This is definitely one of THOSE games, so hang in there Jared. The Mission has only just begun!
This was literally my first introduction to the Metal Gear series, and the first MG game I ever played. That was before MGS launched on Playstation. For a supposedly 'bad' Metal gear game, it's still a lot of fun. There's a few areas where you can cheese knock-outs (something young me figured out pretty quickly) to stock up on rations that the guards might randomly drop. This is because of the fixed-spawn locations for enemies on some screens. Just keep punching and they spawn INTO your first. Lovely. Also, it's very possible to get through large chunks of the game entirely stealthily, including that entire opener, but it's necessary to know the enemy patrol patterns first. In the areas where you walk INTO the path of a search light, you need to line yourself up on the left-side of the path (the brown area) and run STRAIGHT DOWN. You'll barely clip the light but won't trigger an alarm.
Even though this is considered to be the worse NES Metal Gear, Kojima didn't really mind this one that much (but despises the first one). Apparently this was an inspiration for Metal Gear 2 for the MSX2, which led to Metal Gear Solid, and so on and so forth. Funny how these things work out.
Never seen it. Fascinated. But wow, that difficulty... infinitely respawning guards, spotlights ignoring the pseudo-3D and setting off alarms when they 'should' be pointed at blank jungle 'behind' Snake, screen transitions slapping you immediately into said spotlights, aforementioned infinite guards having omnidirectional homing bullets while poor Snake has to delicately line up his baby pew-pew bullets that only seem to travel about eight and a half feet before dropping immediately and harmlessly to the ground... brave souls who death count, it is not the BAN you should fear, but carpal tunnel from recording all the deaths to come.
He's right, I've never seen a playthrough of Snake's Revenge, I'll give him that. I still think it's a bad game, but that could be my childhood trauma.
Death count in this episode: 4
I see you like to live dangerously.

Konami really knew how to utilize the NES sound chip, almost every Konami game had a killer soundtrack.
Both Konami and Capcom really used the NES sound chip to it's full potential.
@@ZombieJesus1987 I'd add SunSoft, and any game with music done by the Follin brothers.
@@TeflonSoul Definitely! FESTERS QUEST had a fantastic soundtrack.
But all the developers mentioned in this thread had awesome soundtracks.
This soundtrack rocks! Batman and Journey to Silius are also at the top!
Snake's Revenge rules! Trying to play this as a 5 year old made me the man I am today!

Big Boss: I've had it with these motherf*cking Snakes on this motherf*cking base!
I don't want to be banned so I'm definitely not going to say that Jared killed Snake 4 times in this episode.
lol

I love Vlad's edits I hope "As an nes game it's not bad it actually has a lot of things going for it" is a constant for this series lol.
15:11 I like how they totally don't see Snake standing over there when they bring him back to the base...
By the end of the video I only imagine the guards when spotting Snake:
"How many times we have to teach you old man!?"
To think that if this game was never made then Kojima would probably never had continued making Metal Gear games.
I remember the time you played the 'Merry Gear' Metal Gear game, that was funny AF! Thanks to you, Vlad, Dylan and any others who produce these videos ^_^ Hope you and everyone have a great Christmas/Holiday season!🎁
Hmmm... I know what he needs... IS SOME NINTENDO POWER!
Number of deaths this episode
...Is a number between 1 and 5
HA! take that Jared! not an official death count!
4..?
"Let's not get spotted"

just think. if it wasn't for "snake's revenge", we wouldn't have the entire metal gear franchise as we know it.
I was actually hoping you'd play Snake's Revenge! I actually really loved this game lol and the music was awesome too, can't wait to see more!
The music is pretty kicking might be worth playing just to here the jams.

It can't be!

The serious manly Snake voice is back! I can't play any action game with male protagonist without thinking his voice should be like the one Jared does. So serious! ò.ó Yeah.
This Snake looks to be built more like Vulcan Raven. I can't imagine him being particularly proficient at stealth.
