Man, this game is OPAQUE sometimes. An adult could figure it out, but this had to have been kinda rough for a kid, right? I'm not sensing any cues for when you actually damage a boss vs not. Still a very cool game whose rough edges can be forgiven given its age and creativity. Also, the David Hayter voice, as well as the separate-series return of Wizard Vlad and Witch Doctor Lady, make this a ton of fun to watch.
“Oh Jesus, the truck is moving on its own! Again!”😱 Does that mean NES Metal Gear exists in the same universe as that Stephen King movie, Maximum Overdrive, where trucks become sentient and start killing people?
That's so frustrating with the part that you skipped... you should be able to blaze right through it, though. Also, love the witch doctor lady callbacks... keep them coming!
Guards: *patrolling, patrolling, patrolling* Snake: *makes sound* Guards: ... !? Snake: I'M STEALTHY, THIS IS A STEALTHY MISSION Guards: Oh, ok, it must have been the wind
According to StrategyWiki, it takes 11 mines to destroy the tank. What a weird pattern. It's like one guy is running back and forth between the guns to fire them one at a time out of some sort of balanced ammo OCD.
I loved seeing Shaman Lady and Vlad in this series, but can we also appreciate the Foley work for Jared’s “loudly sneaking” Snake around 5 minutes in? Great stuff!
I like the thought that, at the end of the episode, Snake was clumsily fumbling with a ring of keycards trying to figure out the right one to get through the door before the guard spots him.
This game gets so much hate. I beat this game with nothing but a pen and paper and it was thrilling. With exception to the computer end boss, this game does push the NES limits.
I believe after he failed the roof, he didn't recheck the left most side, so he's missing another hostage rescue. Rescuing enough dudes is always crucial to getting rank 5 and that's important for contacting Jennifer.
I remember somehow finding that tank one time. I think I shot it with the handgun a couple times and then punched it and died. Again, I was too young to understand the game and hardly ever made it into the first building.
Say "window barrier" the same way your favorite seiyu would for some resolution there. Localization must have been way harder 30 years ago if something that basic got mangled. e this took me a few minutes to connect in my brain but did you read the Worlds of Power novelization for Metal Gear? In that, Snake puts on the bomb blast suit to safely jump off the rickety bridge on the roof.
Translations back in the day were often done with in-house people rather than a team or foreign translator. Think the one Japanese guy in the office that did well in his English class in high-school. It's why so many of these old games have blatant errors like this. Low budget and priority.
Konami's not really ever been the greatest when it comes to letting you know when you've missed something important or not. Once I beat SotN without ever picking up the thing that lets you touch water unharmed, cos the ferryman that's supposed to take you to it never spawned the first time I played. So I played through thinking I just needed to have enough health to tank the damage in places.
What no one has figured out is that when in an item room, you can go in to the transceiver screen and then back out the item with regenerate without having to go in and out of the item room.
Been a long time since I played both MSX2 originals, but didn’t the rooftop boss use to be a stationary helicopter you took town with the grenade-launcher?
@@Zeburaman2005 I do that in the underground sections sometimes. I keep thinking there are places to place explosives in this game, but that's the MSX version.
I'm not sure if jered pick up the guy in the rooftop after dying. and this is getting me crazy, if this game is like the computer one, you need every guy rescued, and my god, this will suck in the future if he forgets about it
I still think it's incredible, gameplay wise the progression from this, to Metal Gear Solid 5. Say what you want about how drastically different the story in that one was, the gameplay is pitch perfect and enjoyable as heck. Kojima did magic, right down to who he had work with him to create this wonderful, unforgettable and F-ing weirdly lovable franchise.
This was indeed my first Metal Gear experience, but it was way too cryptic for me to complete without a guide which I used several years later. I then learned of the msx games and played Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. I never played the original Metal Gear Solid but I did get The Twin Snakes for GameCube. I never understood why is was disliked compared to the original until recently when I watched a video explaining why, and I would agree. The Tranq gun really screws with the tone the game was setting among other things. I started playing the Metal Gear games again after playing UnMetal, funny ass game.
It takes 11 Land Mines to destroy the tank, and to get 11+ Land Mines you need to be at least Rank 3, so Jared had missed some hostages. He's now Rank 3 at the end of this video.
Honestly pretty impressed by how much of this game Jared seems to more or less remember, especially compared to his zelda randomizers where that kind of knowledge never holds up.
So if you kill the prisoners that rank you up, you'll be hard stuck if you can't acquire enough mines? That's kind of lame game design, in my opinion....
I am glad that Shaman Lady and Wizard Vlad are continuing to recur.
SHAMAN LADY RETURNS!
.
That alone and Jerd's Snake impression makes this video enjoyable.
.
.
ProJared: *makes a big oopsie in the game*
Shaman Lady: "My time has come."
actually cool seeing this game be played through and appreciated

Metal Gear? Metal Gear! Even though it's the NES version, I still remember it fondly. Thanks Jerd!
So much of this is only coming back to me now that I am watching.
I do remember those rickety bridges being tougher than they looked.
I like to imagine that the "Uh-Oh! The Truck have started move!" is coming from the driver of that Truck and not Snake.
“Oh Jesus, the truck is moving on its own! Again!”😱
Does that mean NES Metal Gear exists in the same universe as that Stephen King movie, Maximum Overdrive, where trucks become sentient and start killing people?
Or it just has really faulty parking brakes.

She brought her own music too :D
Thats a nice touch
Who else love this Star tropic running gag? I cant be the only one.
The bad part is that who didn't watch it won't get it...
Lmao the Shaman lady returns my favorite is her and wizard Vlad always makes my day :D thanks for the awesome video Jared

The suprise return of the shaman lady! Truly were in for another good time!

maybe window barrier = wind barrier ? like a strong gust of wind?
Shoots 35 bullets into an impervious boss….3 minutes later: “I’m gettin’ low on bullets again…”

"Metal Gear!"

I don't always keep up with ProJared, but when I do, I am so glad when I understand the references.
13:01 Just gotta play Bomberman for a bit. Also Snake took a tank shell to the chest, damn.
3:22 SHE'S BACK. GOD YES.
It's nice that this clearly evil military base has a dedicated nap room for it's guards, sure it doubles as explosives storage but still.
I remember somehow finding that tank one time. I think I shot it with the handgun a couple times and then punched it and died. Again, I was too young to understand the game and hardly ever made it into the first building.
Jared: "Find a way of the roof!!!"

You can't kill a Tank, Jerd!
...or can you?
@3:30 yes, she is back!! Yes! Don’t ever let her go. It’s hilarious
Have a hurricane on top of me but Shaman lady made my day 🤣
I've been really enjoying this series even though I'm not into Metal Gear. Keep going Jerd!
bro i have never once killed that tank. I walked right past him every time on the lefthand side, i think
Big Boss here. I forgot to tell you, this isn't actually you going to Wal-Mart to pick up ground beef for spaghetti.
I too love to sleep with my bros with all of us using a landmine as a pillow

Yes. The NES version is different.
@@StCerberusEngel Yeah, I know that. I simply was confused as to whether the helicopter boss was from this game or its MSX2 sequel.

Shaman lady!!!!
Surely some of those dead-end areas must have hidden doors you can punch open with prisoners inside, right?
I'm pretty sure when he says window barrier he means wind and it's just bad/lazy translation like oops I feel asleep instead of fell asleep

Yay
Awesome
What is Shaman Lady's Twitch channel? Want to sub to watch all her reaction videos and streams.
So, you killed two machine gunners, and now you're killing a "machine gun kid"? Were those two his parents?
"Machine Gun Kid", what is this, a American 1930s gangster movie?
Honestly pretty impressed by how much of this game Jared seems to more or less remember, especially compared to his zelda randomizers where that kind of knowledge never holds up.
