Just like Starfield lol. Bethesda lost its way. It used to make what was basically first person CRPGs, but switched over to more first person ARPGs. A concept change like that cant last. Good studios know what works for them. Bethesda got greedy and changed the concept late in the game. Their games feel creatively devoid at this point. Morrowind impressed people because it felt so different from other RPGs. Giant mushrooms, unique architecture, it really felt like an alien world. The more Bethesda strays from that level of originality the more they will fall apart.

Rockstar makes a good games, and just revamps the same game with a new story, graphics, and overall adds to their working games, they don't try and re invent it. This re inventing the wheel is what's killing these industries. With fallout 76 we wanted fallout 4 with new graphics and playing with friends. Rockstar made rdr2 as literally an expansion of the world of rdr1 with way better graphics and a great story. All elder scrolls needs to do is take skyrim and add more to it, don't take anything away, don't reinvent, just add more new good things and it will succeed.

Or, these are the most popular overhauls of the skill trees. Maybe I should take some notes on what works and what doesn’t with how we used to have it set up.
What’s that about combat mechanics? Here’s five alternative ways to build it, all that improve on how it used to be in different ways? Which one would best complement our world?

There's a reason AAA gaming studios are losing stock and indie studios/developers are only growing in popularity. Corporations listen to the suits sitting at the top instead of the fans who will actually buy the game. They think the board knows better than the people actually purchasing the product, and when theyre proven wrong they just try to flip it around on us like "no youre the reason the game is bad because you're enjoying it wrong." Corporations these days just dont know what to do or how to take negative feedback, so when they get it they just say "nuhuh" and throw it in the trash bin. Give your money to the indie devs, let them prosper while these AAA companies fall, that way when they run out of business we have some experienced, down to earth people ready to fill the shoes left behind.

That's why I hope TES6 will have extensive modding like Skyrim did. Modding is what kept the game alive all this time.
And I also hope they will continue with the same modding mechanism, not "cooked" mod files that cannot be reverse engineered like Unreal does, but everything open, source and all. That difference is reflected in the modding community: Skyrim modders are usually very generous in letting others build on their work, or even take over a mod when they quit the modding scene. Unreal modders in contrast seem extremely jealous of their creations, and screen bloody murder when someone suggests unpacking a mod file in order to learn from it.

And the icing on the cake is the fact that they blame the fans instead of engaging in any form of self reflection.
It's very similar to Disney right now releasing Star Wars titles. I don't know why Bethesda's developers and publishers are refusing to take accountability, but if they don't make a change soon they'll lose everything. I just want to frame that timeline, because the mid 2010s were about 6-8 years ago, and 6-8 years ago "culture" was still much more one-sided for certain... shall we say, pandering with low-effort tokenization and 'member berries, and the games coming out now, are FULL BORE loaded with that, because when it started development, that was still "trendy"
I'm just pointing out, the recent, massive shifts of these games eating shit before they even launch only really started this year. That means, any game that started development in or before 2020 is likely to far along in development to salvage from this level of below-mediocrity; post 2020 development might still be early enough to redesign, retool, or repurpose work for efforts to avoid this fate, but I don't expect to see truly great games again for a for a few more years.

I don't think we've had a super novel AAA game IP or idea in years, they're usually built off the backs of their predecessors in some way.

Shameful really. Really points to the lack of identity the game and bethesda has right now, a quantity over quality approach for a game fans expect to have lovingly handcrafted engaging stories and quests. It just sounds like a spectacular failure in vision, understanding and leadership

The radioactive glowing red flag at the start of this is that marketing department. When your marketing department sets expectations it means your company is already a corpse being run by means-tested trend chasing suits instead of anyone working to make an interesting and coherent story/world.
If you ever watch some of the interviews with Emil Pagliarulo about modern Bethesda's development process there are a few takeaways that support this. First and foremost - there is no design document to call back to for narrative consistency. Emil then brags about "our developers are their writers" and the quests suffer for it as there's no internal thread connecting them back together as there are no writers/editors checking for consistency. There is then comparing the current process to a jazz musician improving... while failing to understand the "illiterate jazz prodigy" is a part of myth and stories while actual jazz musicians were overwhelmingly classically trained musicians. You know, people who knew how to read and write a script and can tell a story with music on the fly because that's literally what they spent their educations learning how to do.

They've coasted on this engine for over twenty years, haphazardly patching it into some bastard semblance of function for the times. Because we've played this game before. Several times. And it always has the same core flaws. I'm honestly surprised they managed to make you the actual protagonist in Starfield, since they couldn't manage that with Fallout 3 or Oblivion.

Flesh out your faction missions and limit them. For example; if you join the fighters guild and want to become their leader, you should be barred from advancing beyond an acolyte of the mages guild, thieves guild, Dark brotherhood etc. this promotes replayability.
Stop making us The Chosen One. One of the reasons games like Elden Ring and Witcher have such riveting stories is because we are not the center of the world. We just live in it.
Consequences! Let the player decide how to go about tackling a problem. If it ends in the death of a story NPC then write around that with consequences making your next tasked that much more difficult or easier.
Do something about the brain dead AI. The enemy AI has not evolved from just running at you and swinging their weapon nonstop occasionally moving out of frames or just repeated slinging the same spell over and over until they run out of magicka and start rushing at you with the same repeated swing relentlessly while occasionally moving out of screen.

The legendary looting loop should go away and bring back unique weapons and armor tied to locations. I loved the way Obsidian did that system, getting the Q-35 matter modulator plasma rifle or the gobi scout rifle. They had the PERFECT opportunity with how they made the upgrade system to allow me to change ammo types for the weapons, make them explosive that way. And then just needed an ammo crafting system and bingo. You already have a great junk and crafting system to do that.

True. Fallout4 wasn’t a bad game. However, some aspects of the game were a bit lacking.
They also heavily relied on the building mechanic, so they relied on the player to fill the world with more life. I think that it was a mistake because it required many development resources and distracted from the main gameplay loop.
These „quests“ always had the same blueprint and basically felt radiant. A couple of handcrafted quests with stuff to explore or experience are far better.
I‘d much more prefer a building like it was done in KingdomeComeDeliverance or Skyrim, if they wanna go that route. (Because it is less effort and doesn’t distract that much from the main gameplay)

The volume of fans they gained out weighing those that they lose. Until it reached a tipping point, and now everyone can see the trend like a slow boiled frog seeing it's skin starting to peel in the water.

Imo the problem with Bethesda and also Ubisoft I'd say is that they think just because Skyrim was successful and is loved and just because Origins is loved to some extent or Black Flag earlier, they can keep releasing them over and over but in a new package.
There's always people saying that the fans can never be pleased. For example: AC fans will never be pleased, they wanted AC to change and now they hate it when its different... The problem is that devs dont understand what change means. It means to take your formula for games and examine it, take out whats thrash, improve whats good and in general innovate. No one is gonna play the 15th AC game that's the same as the 5th and the 9th and say YEAH THATS A GOOD GAME!
Bethesda is the same as Ubi. They are literally making the same game over and over again and expecting that somehow people will still like it, when in reality even Skyrim isnt that good, its just that it was innovative at the time and the modding community is the only thing thats keeping that game relevant.
What Ubisoft needs to do is take AC Unity and the first AC or the Ezio trilogy and make a mix of those two. Take the stylish parkour of Unity and combine it with the control of the first game. Take the tools of Unity and combine them with the social stealth of the first plus improve it, add new things.
What Bethesda need to do is make a smaller game thats a bit more focused. Actually make a good combat system this time. Make some good dialogue and a good story for a change. Less loading screens. Better optimization. Make the game deeper and not wider in general.
They need to stop bitching and start innovating and improving.

The problems with Starfield were not even close to being caused by technological limitations or not living up to lofty expectations, they were due to pure laziness and lack of thought. If you go and watch Starfield critiques and try to imagine how the many problems people brought up could be fixed, the solutions are well within the capabilities of any small AA studio, let alone a Microsoft-backed AAA studio with decades of experience. Just for one small example, they had these “ancient temples” that had “never been discovered” literally a hundred yards away from fully populated bases and camps. You could stand at the entrance of these things and an NPC would be directly in your line of sight. They didn’t put any effort at all into giving the game a remotely believable world. It’s a sci fi futuristic space game where you have to run back to the same room as every NPC just to inform them of something you found out in the world, as if they have full on space travel technology and not so much as a walkie talkie in the entire galaxy. It was transparently done to bloat the game and fill out playtime with empty traversal to hide the fact that there is a severe lack of content.
