Just like Starfield lol. Bethesda lost its way. It used to make what was basically first person CRPGs, but switched over to more first person ARPGs. A concept change like that cant last. Good studios know what works for them. Bethesda got greedy and changed the concept late in the game. Their games feel creatively devoid at this point. Morrowind impressed people because it felt so different from other RPGs. Giant mushrooms, unique architecture, it really felt like an alien world. The more Bethesda strays from that level of originality the more they will fall apart.

Rockstar makes a good games, and just revamps the same game with a new story, graphics, and overall adds to their working games, they don't try and re invent it. This re inventing the wheel is what's killing these industries. With fallout 76 we wanted fallout 4 with new graphics and playing with friends. Rockstar made rdr2 as literally an expansion of the world of rdr1 with way better graphics and a great story. All elder scrolls needs to do is take skyrim and add more to it, don't take anything away, don't reinvent, just add more new good things and it will succeed.
For real. All they need to do is… that. Just do what they did, with new quests, better animations and visuals, get a clean art direction…. It doesn’t even need to be *bigger*. Skyrim is big enough.

Baldur's Gate 3 absolutely ruined their lives, they no longer can hide behind the excuse that nobody wants to play actual RPG games and now the standards have been raised when their games are worse than ever before
Absolutely, the work a smaller studio did was astounding. TES games always feel shallow to me, even fully modded, despite how much I love Skyrim it is not even close to the level of roleplaying found in BG3, and I fear that ED6 will be the same.
@@OwenRhodrithat’s because after morrowind they dropped all focus on lore and immersion, and went to voice acting and music , and with Skyrim they went full on hack n slash and abandoned everything
It's not BG3 that destroyed them because these are two completely different games and completely different genres, it's apples and oranges. What actually destroyed them was the Witcher 3 as well as the rise of Souls games like Dark Souls and the latest masterpiece that is Elden Ring. They can't compete with these games in terms of hack and slash open world RPGs with their current old engine and their below standards practices.
@FraldinhoBJJ But the thing is that BG3 proves that you can do all of that. there is no need to compromise, plus voice acting in Skyrim is often awful, especially with the inconsistent accents. You could argue that BG3 is a decade newer game, but I compared to Starfield (which I don't think is a bad game at all) it is still not even close.
If I was Todd Howard, I'd reach out to as many of the modders on the biggest modding projects as possible, offer them a job, and set up a small subsidiary studio.
Even if they didn’t directly hire modders the Skyrim modding community offers Bethesda a perfectly democratized map of what gamers want from them. Oh, it looks like a million people downloaded this goofy cat follower, maybe we should include a couple voiced sidekicks that give lore accurate commentary on the adventure. Or, these are the most popular overhauls of the skill trees. Maybe I should take some notes on what works and what doesn’t with how we used to have it set up. What’s that about combat mechanics? Here’s five alternative ways to build it, all that improve on how it used to be in different ways? Which one would best complement our world? Graphics? Quest design? Factions? There’s mods that address all of these. They have the most elaborate cheat codes to their exams and refuse to look at them for reasons unknown.

I think its the opposite. Starfield being an entirely new setting made people finally realize that the core structure is completely outdated. Bethesda never actually improved the formula. In 20 years. All they did was improve graphics and mechanics. Which is something I am happy about, but if we are totally honest the quest quality of Skyrim was already outdated and didn't hold a candle to the actual narratively strong games of the time.
the fact that Skyrim has been modded for 13 years...Oblivion has been ported by the community after 18 years...and Bethesda thinks a procedurally generated space shooter was the right move.
Proc gen space shooter can work but it needs proper sandbox mechanics similar to mount and blade or Elite Dangerous. But Bethesda botched it as they couldn't which type of game they wanted to make. They wanted to make Oblivion in space, but they don't have the resource to craft enough handmade POIs to make it interesting. Meanwhile they also failed to flesh out the flight sim and the sandbox mechanics so outside of narrative driven quests the game feels boring af.
Hearing these CEOs cry about having to make a good game is hilarious to me. "It's so hard. We can't sell you slop for 79.99 :(!! People expect good games because we've made them before? It's just so unfair."
It is abundantly obvious that Bethesda's design team is overthinking and worrying about "realism". Starfield's failure was these 3 things: _•It wasnt taking place during the war that banned the use of mechs._ _•the spaceship turning was slow and drifty, and made that first impression of space combat feel AWFUL._ *you mean to tell me that my ship still cant turn precisely despite this future being long after the earth turned into a wasteland?* _•I'm still salty they had the audacity to make a mech graveyard as a lore object that you_ *CANT USE.* _and dont people play games to kind of... escape from the stresses of reality?_
Also remember that the people that made Oblivion , Skyrim and Fallout 4 have probably left the studio. They are left with the team that made Starfield ... They know they are screwed unless they start hiring actual talent.

Bethesda will never make a decent game if they continue to use their dogshit racing game engine. What type of results do they expect if they keep handicapping themselves.
There's a reason AAA gaming studios are losing stock and indie studios/developers are only growing in popularity. Corporations listen to the suits sitting at the top instead of the fans who will actually buy the game. They think the board knows better than the people actually purchasing the product, and when theyre proven wrong they just try to flip it around on us like "no youre the reason the game is bad because you're enjoying it wrong." Corporations these days just dont know what to do or how to take negative feedback, so when they get it they just say "nuhuh" and throw it in the trash bin. Give your money to the indie devs, let them prosper while these AAA companies fall, that way when they run out of business we have some experienced, down to earth people ready to fill the shoes left behind.
That's why I hope TES6 will have extensive modding like Skyrim did. Modding is what kept the game alive all this time. And I also hope they will continue with the same modding mechanism, not "cooked" mod files that cannot be reverse engineered like Unreal does, but everything open, source and all. That difference is reflected in the modding community: Skyrim modders are usually very generous in letting others build on their work, or even take over a mod when they quit the modding scene. Unreal modders in contrast seem extremely jealous of their creations, and screen bloody murder when someone suggests unpacking a mod file in order to learn from it.

I cant stand their complete lack of self-awareness. They don't listen to the fans complaints, repeatedly release unfinished titles, and lose creativity/complexity with each consecutive title. And the icing on the cake is the fact that they blame the fans instead of engaging in any form of self reflection. It's very similar to Disney right now releasing Star Wars titles. I don't know why Bethesda's developers and publishers are refusing to take accountability, but if they don't make a change soon they'll lose everything. They need to understand that if they keep biting the hand that feeds they won't have a platform to make games at all.
Its not that they dont listen... they REFUSE to listen. Old school geniuses aged and moved on and now we have current thing agenda enforcers. And im afraid that its done on purpose to taint or purely destroy gaming as a whole because maybe... just maybe they dont want gaming to dictate fantasy being the king even on numbers... just like TV/movie media did in the past and become the ultimate enforcers through apps deviating the original IP sources onto PC propaganda like The Witcher for instance, along the ongoing created TRASH.
Just like with everything, it’s a mix of both. Yes they specifically need more accountability I agree, but it IS also toxic fans that go overkill with the hatred, making things seem way worse than they are.

The comment I was looking for, thank you. They can analyze the tendancies in Nexus Mods (of course, the mods that stay true to the game), they can read the reddit threads which give relevant feedback on the game and/or mods, they can watch the numerous videos that showcase the best modded Skyrim etc, or that criticize the game, or the hype around Slyblivion and Skywind, etc. They have SO MUCH information a click away, they could have just kept informed through the years and probably have a magic recipe around their games'' universe for the next one

The problem is they don't have more experience, everyone thinks: the technology is better, game developers have 20 years of experience to pull from. But 20 years is a long time, people leave the industry. New people come in and they do not have 20 years of experience, in reality we have an influx of people who are being hired for their race and gender and for their beliefs rather than for their talent. Lots of new game developers don't want to make a game, they want to make a difference. The old flag carriers are gone and the new blood has left those flags on the ground to rot, they would rather batter their heads against the fans and blame them for their inability to move past their agenda to make a good game than actually do so. They simply... do not have the drive or the talent to create something good. There is zero passion in most of the industry.
it's too hard for them to "copy paste" skyrim and make it better, change the map, make the creation kit better (the one in Starfield is dogshìt), make the game look better and make actual quests and unique locations, etc... I don't know how it's so hard for them to just look at the best mods/modpacks and get inspired by them.
They don’t have better engines… they’ve been on creation kit for 30 years and they plan on keeping it till the company goes under because it’s too expensive to make a new engine
They could litterally set up a whole new department by hiring just modders and have a new game out overloaded with content at a fraction of the cost of fucking with the existing generation of "field experts". At this point it is common knowledge that the existing corporate workers and consultants are too out of touch from the average gamer to the point where every project is doomed to fail no matter how much money they throw at it. Instead of having a large diverse team of corporate and hr shills, 5 random autistic guys could outperform them in fractions of time, budget, and drama as they just want to make good game's and not statement pieces for themselves
This is actually something that i have thought about a lot. More companies need to make their games easily modable, and then pay attention to which mods get the most praise and hype. Then bring those same people on as paid contractors with just free reign to just make stuff. Like say TES VI, what if they brought on the best TES V modders to make quests and gear and dungeons which would then be added into the game. I think that would give Bethesda mad props for "caring about their community", even if it was just a means of selling more copies to make them more money.

So many of the terrible games launched in the last year, started development in the mid 2010s. That means, any game that started development in or before 2020 is likely to far along in development to salvage from this level of below-mediocrity; post 2020 development might still be early enough to redesign, retool, or repurpose work for efforts to avoid this fate, but I don't expect to see truly great games again for a for a few more years. I don't think we've had a super novel AAA game IP or idea in years, they're usually built off the backs of their predecessors in some way. This current era isn't a bad thing, per se. "More Soulslikes" is always appreciated, but when does it start to become fatiguing? "More Bethesda" is fatiguing, "More Destiny" became fatiguing a little while ago, and "More CoD" is fairly self-explanatory. Part of the problem is lawyers. They will say, "no you can't take advice from fans it will open you up to lawsuits." "No you can't use modds as a blueprint it will open you up to lawsuits." Ect. An example of this was Star trek. When Discovery was being made people were saying you need to incorporate Axanar. The company that owned the rights to Star Trek said our lawyers advised us to not add in Axanar and to shut down Axanar production. Lawyers ruin everything. Unless you get jail time or capital punishment being sued is not that serious. A lawyer or insurance company should never be management for your company.

The issue with Starfield is not even the procedural generation itself, its how lazy it was done. How do you have 1 outpost design for the entire galaxy?!
I assume you are exaggerating, I haven't played it (I saw the train wreck coming) but that's crazy, procedural generation could work if you had enough handcrafted "nodes" ie base designs, cave designs etc which can be inserted into the world with the proc-gen, enough so that you don't notice repeats for a long time should have been easily achievable for a game dev the size of Bethesda. @@EggEnjoyer Well, no actually. Skyrim was one of the best selling games of all time because it took all the things the aforementioned poster stated, and filtered them down into a sludge that's easily consumed by the lowest common denominators of society. Translation: they made it appeal to as many people as virtually possible in order to cast the widest net for consumers and it worked magnificently. I love Skyrim, don't get me wrong but it hardly 'improved' anything from Morrowind and really only improved a few things from Oblivion - even then sometimes taking key features or systems out of the game entirely!

The radioactive glowing red flag at the start of this is that marketing department. When your marketing department sets expectations it means your company is already a corpse being run by means-tested trend chasing suits instead of anyone working to make an interesting and coherent story/world. If you ever watch some of the interviews with Emil Pagliarulo about modern Bethesda's development process there are a few takeaways that support this. First and foremost - there is no design document to call back to for narrative consistency. Emil then brags about "our developers are their writers" and the quests suffer for it as there's no internal thread connecting them back together as there are no writers/editors checking for consistency. There is then comparing the current process to a jazz musician improving... while failing to understand the "illiterate jazz prodigy" is a part of myth and stories while actual jazz musicians were overwhelmingly classically trained musicians. You know, people who knew how to read and write a script and can tell a story with music on the fly because that's literally what they spent their educations learning how to do.
I hate that man and I can't help it, he despises that players want options and only wants to tell HIS story, He's not the writer that should be working on CRPG's, he should just go write a damn novel.

It's simple really. You can't proceduraly generate environmental storytelling. That's what we want: wander into a location, look at the bodies or the things there and let those objects tell the story. Not even notes or holotapes, just skeletons and garden gnomes. Like chasing down Mercer in Skyrim and you go through the booby-trapped door and there on the plinth carved with the Thieves' Guiild Diamond Symbol are three lock picks and a Black Briar Ale bottle. He knew three Nightingales would come for him and he left this taunt for you. You can't proceduraly generate stuff like that.
The problem with Bethesda is that they have, for years now, released a more and more stripped-down version of their previous titles. They've grown complacent and due to a lack of competition for their style of games, they haven't had to change.

It baffles me that Bethesda can sit on an IP like The Elder Scrolls for so long and decide to not focus their main development power into it. Nobody wanted Redfall or Starfield. Just give us more story driven single player games with no fomo battlepass bs.
It is because ESO exists and their corporate bosses are pleased with microtransactions. It is why, if you check the video at 11:54 you can see that they're literally selling a virtual tree stump for $20 in Fallout 76. This is the future Bethesda is heading towards. They were shocked when people called out the Tracker's Alliance $7 quest in Starfield for introducing a FOMO piecemeal mission structure, thinking they could sell $100 in missions over time.
Nobody forced Bethesda to turn Fallout from a choice/consequence RPG into a dumbed down exploration game. Nobody forced Bethesda to dumb down RPG mechanics in every Elder Scrolls game since Morrowind. Nobody forced Bethesda to write shit stories. Nobody forced Bethesda to design games in ways that require shit tons of loading screens. Nobody forced Bethesda to create characters that look/animate like past gen games but even shittier. Nobody forced Bethesda to pack their games with endless radiant quest shit. Nobody forced Bethesda to release bugged ridden games. Everyone in these comments asking for more complex games have 0 insight into the gaming market. Could Bethesda make a more complicated and gritty RPG with all their old systems? Of course! Would it sell as well? Of course not! These companies are out to make money, not appeal to you! Gaming has become casual because it became popular. That's all you need to know. And they are right that no matter what they do, they will get flamed by some group somewhere. Being niche only gets you so far, even if you are the best at that niche.

@@Legion849 Morrowind and Oblivion together have less sales than BG3 does now. What's your point? Bethesda returning to their old games is not where the money is despite all the comments here contrary. BG3 is special in that it can be played simply or complex and the experience caters to both to some level. I have played BG3 with people who wanted to min max their character and analyze every combat encounter decision. I have also played with people who don't bother to read their abilities and still do just fine. Unless you are on honor mode, the complexities in BG3 don't matter. That's why it is appealing even as a CRPG to a wide audience. They also nailed making interesting characters and their interactions and complexity among different depending on actions. It's a totally different experience than what Bethesda has gone for in over 25 years... They are making open world sandbox games since daggerfall and to expect their next game to be anything like BG3 is ridiculous. It's totally different types of games.
3/4 of the original Bethesda Game Studios team have either passed away (3 critical people passed away), resigned, or retired. Bethesda is totally incapable of repeating it's past success. Hell, I'm impressed they finally figured out how to deal with ladders in Starfield. That's a massive leap, let's be happy with just that 😉
Yah, which I forgot about really quickly because of how worthless they were and a step down. They really shouldn't have put the effort in, and just used that to spend time doing something better, like polishing up the mage quest line.
Those procedurally generated quests would be fine as just guild jobs to boost up your rank because like in Morrowind you can’t continue until you’re a certain level. But Bethesda doesn’t do anything like that anymore. They don’t block off any content for roleplaying purposes. It’s like the opposite of BG3 or games like Morrowind or New Vegas.
It's literally in their power to avoid this outcome. First, they have to abandon that decrepit old Creation engine. They literally will not survive another game crawling out of that encrusted culvert. They've coasted on this engine for over twenty years, haphazardly patching it into some bastard semblance of function for the times. We've seen how that worked with Fallout 76, and we've seen how it turned out with Starfield. Between that and Todd Howard's _blistering_ lack of creative vision, Bethesda is doomed to wither away to irrelevance if they can't innovate. People waited almost ten years for Starfield, and then you barely heard anything about it after the new year. Three months of post-release hype, and then everyone went quiet. Because we've played this game before. Several times. And it always has the same core flaws. I'm honestly surprised they managed to make you the actual protagonist in Starfield, since they couldn't manage that with Fallout 3 or Oblivion.
While I agree that the engine is a problem for them but to me I think their biggest problem is lack of writers, they only have one lead designer lead writer an incompetent idiot by the name of Emil Pagliarulo.
Games like baldur's gate 3 and witcher 3 wild hunt really show that no only you can make a good high budget rpg but people will absolutely love it. Bethesda has no damn excuse.

Fallout 4, it has quite good gameplay. But the story is by far the worst I seen in a video game, it's a fun sandbox to mod. Going from Fallout 3 to Fallout 4 and it's just a lazy copy of the same story but backwards? As if they can't see their own games and can't improve on their ideas anymore. Fallout New Vegas is RIGHT there, they didn't make it but still. Same goes for these huge multi year fan projects. Copying another kids homework isn't that hard. Or even outright hire the people from these projects and use them yourself, it would be cheaper than starting at ground zero.

@@tonyug113 Same with 76. Zenimax did that with one of Beth's subsidiary studios. Howard was the main Bethesda guy working on it, and that was more a consultancy. Since we hated Starfield, we're gonna hate ES6? That's a terrifying statement to make, and does NOT make me feel hopeful for ES6 at all. If it's the same quality as Starfield, the Elder Scrolls series is cooked.
I think the big problem is, skyrim released in 2011 so its like 15 years ago. The team which made skyrim is long gone. The skills are gone. Beth is now like a athlette which won gold medal 15 years ago and since than, just ate (money kept pouring from skyrim anyway) Now they are fat and forgot how to run. Starfield was a proof of that. I very much doubt they can even create something like skyrim. Let alone surpass is. The golden age of TES and Beth is long gone.
Most of the higher ups at Bethesda have been around since either Daggerfall or at least the Morrowind DLC. If they set their minds to it, they could still do it no doubt. They've just been more focused on mass appeal, something that's only going to get worse under Microsoft.
Exactly, it’s over folks. Take one look at their development team photos. Mostly far leftist women. Original chads are gone. ES6 is guaranteed to be trash and that’s just the writing problem. The tech problems with their 10 year outdated engine are equivalent or even worse.

The upside of games taking 8-10 years of development to get to market. The market can decide they hate something in a day, and a decade of labor, and money is just pissed away. 🤣 All that trendy pandering that started in the 2010s, that was being pushed by developers and publishers... still deeply rooted in any game that started development more than 3 years ago; virtually all those games will suck and die when they launch because the market just said "Nah, fuck this stuff" And it's almost funny that some developers and studios seem to actually realize, all the work they've been putting into "next product" that is far to developed to scrap, and far to behind schedule to fix, has so much of this stuff in it, that they have literally no choice but to ship it as is, and pretend it's the best thing ever; even though it's obvious what's going to happen to it. GTA 6 says they "expect to be review bombed" and now Bethesda is already telling us they know TES6 is going to suuuuuuck.

I agree, but i actually think most people disagree with you. The amount of people online who complain about skyrim feeling shallow with dumbed down mechanics have honestly left bethesda in a tough spot. Idk about you guys but it just doesn’t even feel the same playing their newer games, you know? Modern games feel soulless and like they were only made for greed. Like when I played the elder scrolls and fallout back in the day, the graphics weren’t the best, and the games had some bugs, but you could tell there was so much effort and hard work put into building the worlds and the story, and it just made it feel so good to play and to acknowledge while playing. The newer games seem to just leave me looking around for these moments where I can acknowledge the effort and feel of the game only to be left in serious disappointment. Fans don't expect too much, they expect what they were used to with Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, and not much more. There's no need for fancy graphics, TES was carried by its style more than technical prowess anyway, or for an open-world the size of the Earth, especially if it's barren ground with a handful of copypasted dungeons. As far as I'm concerned, all the fans are asking for is a game comparable to the old ones in terms of scale, with a carefully made open-world, tweaked gameplay and only slight improvements in graphics. But if Starfield is any indication, they're going for the low-effort route.
i'm sorry but morrowind is an entirely irreproducible experience in my mind. no triple a studio would willing put something like morrowind out to market. I'd also also hate to play through a game like skyrim or oblivion again, as they stand out as some of the most milquetoast fantasy experiences I've ever had. bethesda really needed to just focus on producing an interesting new experience and royally botched it with starfield.

Enderal is a fanmade game, free on Steam (for Skyrim users), that shows how much you can do with that gameplay style of Bethesda. Overall it is excellent. There is also the chance that they reached the cap on the number of possible fans for their medium, not having enough new fans to drown out the old audience. The fans don't have impossible to meet expectations, the fans have a "please, at least make it as good as the last game" expectations. Which they haven't met in recent years.
They've burned me with Starfield, they won't get the same "benefit of the doubt" next time. They went from "full price purchase" to "maybe I'll wait for a sale".
The idea that the games kept improving is pretty odd to me. Sure, the graphics got better - who cares? Skyrim is barely recognisable as a. TES game. It is unbelievably shallow and had very good marketing and mass appeal. It’s stripped of a lot of the character of previous titles.
Small correction. Oblivions dungeons were copy pasted. I cleared that entire map, on foot, without fast travel. You see the same cave layout often. Skyrim was the first game with the unique hand crafted dungeons. It was part of their marketing.
But if they had one tweak, as in like a goblin was in room 3 as opposed to an imp, that’s even a slight enough change to be “unique”. Starfield was literally the same dungeon again and again. So it was the same goblin in the same room over and over again. So how you went on foot and explored every dungeon, there were enough tweaks to make it worth doing that. In starfield there was a high chance you’d already seen all the content already.
@@AVVGaming1yeah, oblivion is not even comparable to starfield, starfield is so bad at this, that you even find the dead bodies of named characters in a dungeon, that same dungeon can appear multiple times on the same planet. It was some science lab, I ran into it 3 times exploring one planet, literally the dead guys name and body is there every time. totally breaks immersion and is such a lazy thing
Small correction.. Morrowind was the first with unique hand crafted everything, from dungeons, to interiors, to everything. Skyrim went back to the roots of Morrowind, but only slightly.
“Fans need to realize that we’re a company that is beholden to shareholders that want everything for nothing and we have to gut creativity for the sake of profits. Fans of our games need to get over it, this is the future of gaming.”
Imo the problem with Bethesda and also Ubisoft I'd say is that they think just because Skyrim was successful and is loved and just because Origins is loved to some extent or Black Flag earlier, they can keep releasing them over and over but in a new package. There's always people saying that the fans can never be pleased. For example: AC fans will never be pleased, they wanted AC to change and now they hate it when its different... The problem is that devs dont understand what change means. It means to take your formula for games and examine it, take out whats thrash, improve whats good and in general innovate. No one is gonna play the 15th AC game that's the same as the 5th and the 9th and say YEAH THATS A GOOD GAME! Bethesda is the same as Ubi. They are literally making the same game over and over again and expecting that somehow people will still like it, when in reality even Skyrim isnt that good, its just that it was innovative at the time and the modding community is the only thing thats keeping that game relevant. What Ubisoft needs to do is take AC Unity and the first AC or the Ezio trilogy and make a mix of those two. Take the stylish parkour of Unity and combine it with the control of the first game. Take the tools of Unity and combine them with the social stealth of the first plus improve it, add new things. What Bethesda need to do is make a smaller game thats a bit more focused. Actually make a good combat system this time. Make some good dialogue and a good story for a change. Less loading screens. Better optimization. Make the game deeper and not wider in general. They need to stop bitching and start innovating and improving.
Think is, they CAN keep releasing the same game because people keep buying it. Gamers are some of the worst people at putting there money where their mouth is. The major have more than 50% of their library filled with games they have never even opened.
Lmao piss off Skyrim was amazing. If it's a clone it'd be amazing. It won so many fucking awards for a reason. Stop being blinded by the fact that You don't like it for personal reasons not that it's a bad game.
Wube, the developer of Factorio, invited about 50 influences and streamers to their HQ to play a massive LAN party for a week to experience their expansion two months ahead of the official release, while developers were live updating the systems to mitigate and work on the concerns noted by the influencers. They've also hired some of the most well known modders to join their team full time to work on said expansion. There's established game development blueprints that folks can follow to maximize community involvement and leverage constructive feedback and create a polished experience.
I was 18 when Skyrim released. I'm 31 now. If you don't want people to be disappointed by your games, maybe try not to release a sequel after over 13 years that has a ton of glitches and outdated gameplay.
The problems with Starfield were not even close to being caused by technological limitations or not living up to lofty expectations, they were due to pure laziness and lack of thought. If you go and watch Starfield critiques and try to imagine how the many problems people brought up could be fixed, the solutions are well within the capabilities of any small AA studio, let alone a Microsoft-backed AAA studio with decades of experience. Just for one small example, they had these “ancient temples” that had “never been discovered” literally a hundred yards away from fully populated bases and camps. You could stand at the entrance of these things and an NPC would be directly in your line of sight. They didn’t put any effort at all into giving the game a remotely believable world. It’s a sci fi futuristic space game where you have to run back to the same room as every NPC just to inform them of something you found out in the world, as if they have full on space travel technology and not so much as a walkie talkie in the entire galaxy. It was transparently done to bloat the game and fill out playtime with empty traversal to hide the fact that there is a severe lack of content.
And what’s even worse is that Skyrim came out in 2011 and has so much more content! So much more to do and explore. So many unique locations. I don’t understand how Starfield took longer to make, had more technology available and still was an overall weaker game with less. I know they were bragging out about how many lines of dialogue they had, but nobody really wanted to listen to the dialogue lol. Not in the way it was packaged in Starfield.
Well to play devils advocate, having to go back to talk to the NPC is believable, because you know.. do you have any idea how freaking long it would take to send a radio communication, even at the speed of light from the nearest star to Sol? thousands of years... Despite the grav jump technology, we don't have the technology to make communications go that fast. (They even explain this in the game). So no.. I can buy that excuse for the majority of the game.
Bethesda doesn't even remember. Games like Skyrim and Fallout 4 were decent games, even good games after they finally got bug-fixed, but they were hardly great games. They only became great games after modders started adding and fixing things that these games became masterpieces. Even some of the best dlc for these games had scripts ripped from mods designed by players. Give players a canvas and the tools and they'll build just about anything, gmod taught us that.
The modder IS the problem. Bethesda have overly relied on modder to fix their game. They make paid mods so that they don't have to work hard and still got the revenue.
@@ponderinglarma The fact that they are doing microtransactions to add shit like more trees, when you can get an entire new game worth of modded content for free is just ridiculous.

@@williamyoung9401dude they are seriously trying to use the same engine? I was wondering about that.
How hard is it to make a better game than one from 20 years ago when you have more money and experience and better engines than before?
Lazy
@@hurotiz You just summed up my thoughts better than I ever could
it's too hard for them to "copy paste" skyrim and make it better, change the map, make the creation kit better (the one in Starfield is dogshìt), make the game look better and make actual quests and unique locations, etc...
Nope, They could have gotten away with that 5 years ago, Now I wont accept skyrim+, Just like we didnt accept skyrim in space. The engine MUST BE redone for a new gen + new graphics, and a better interdependent rpg mission systems. No more script heavy zero interactivity missions. 2005 is

sad state of affairs
So many of the terrible games launched in the last year, started development in the mid 2010s.
I just want to frame that timeline, because the mid 2010s were about 6-8 years ago, and 6-8 years ago "culture" was still much more one-sided for certain... shall we say, pandering with low-effort tokenization and 'member berries, and the games coming out now, are FULL BORE loaded with that, because when it started development, that was still "trendy"
I'm just pointing out, the recent, massive shifts of these games eating shit before they even launch only really started this year. That means, any game that started development in or before 2020 is likely to far along in development to salvage from this level of below-mediocrity; post 2020 development might still be early enough to redesign, retool, or repurpose work for efforts to avoid this fate, but I don't expect to see truly great games again for a for a few more years.
But, developers are now seeing the rotten fruits of their minimal effort labor not paying off, and realizing, years of work... is destine to fail.
Even GTA 6 tweeted they expect massive "review bombing"

I don't think we've had a super novel AAA game IP or idea in years, they're usually built off the backs of their predecessors in some way.
This current era isn't a bad thing, per se. It's just that fatigue is going to set in at some point, and I felt this with Elden Ring most prominently, which I think is THE posterchild of this era of gaming. "More Soulslikes" is always appreciated, but when does it start to become fatiguing?
"More Bethesda" is fatiguing, "More Destiny" became fatiguing a little while ago, and "More CoD" is fairly self-explanatory. People will continue to engage with these things *despite* their fatigue, though, so no company really needs to change their output drastically.
Yeah, because according to gamers, there isn't a single good game coming out in the next 6 years except for GTA 6. Get it together already, they're annoyed at everyone being pissy and expecting the next technological breakthrough every 2 months.
I think one of the most damning and revealing events for Bethesda recently is Todd Howard's reaction to Starfield not winning at the Game Awards. Find the clip.
Marketing doesn't get enough hate for how much it has destroyed the AAA gaming industry.

Agency! Stop trying to give us every choice, every faction, every ending in one playthrough.
Flesh out your faction missions and limit them. For example; if you join the fighters guild and want to become their leader, you should be barred from advancing beyond an acolyte of the mages guild, thieves guild, Dark brotherhood etc. this promotes replayability.
Stop making us The Chosen One. One of the reasons games like Elden Ring and Witcher have such riveting stories is because we are not the center of the world. We just live in it.

These „quests“ always had the same blueprint and basically felt radiant. A couple of handcrafted quests with stuff to explore or experience are far better.

Exactly!
And we never got a oblivion remaster
Skyblivion is on the way at least! I guess we gotta rely on the fans to do this sort of stuff now
Bethesda: "why wont you die!!"😠
Modders: "NANOMACHINES SON!"🗿
The modder IS the problem. Bethesda have overly relied on modder to fix their game. They make paid mods so that they don't have to work hard and still got the revenue.
@@ponderinglarma The fact that they are doing microtransactions to add shit like more trees, when you can get an entire new game worth of modded content for free is just ridiculous. It's like they're run by a bunch of suits who have never played a video game in their lives. They need to stop trying to reinvent the wheel and just give us the classic Bethesda formula with no bullshit. It's crazy how hard they're fumbling the bag
@@ponderinglarma luke warm IQ take right here folks
@@ponderinglarma Lol, you probably actually think you constructed a smart comment.
@@RmnGnzlz Well he did state nothing but fax, if you believe this comment was dumb, you may be an idiot tbh
