    Question for all you viewers, Would you like to see another comparison video? This time with nearly equal bodies and/or tires. Also we'll put it in crawl mode this time (ain't nobody got time to read manuals) and lock the rear diff.

      It is full time 4wd. Both axles are driven at all times. The diffs lock both wheels on a axle together.

      Would be nice to see a video with equal tires. As far as locked, I would rather see a video where you use all of the vehicle capabilities. If you need to make a tight turn, unlock it, hard crawl, lock it... Regardless it looks like the TRX4 is a good rig. My only real concerns are the weight, COG, and complexity. Hopefully the new HPI Venture will be as good as these two. Variety is good.

      i guess it's like any new release, there will be ppl who love and ppl who hate it. Im picking mine up today, from the running videos ive seen, it is a nice performing rig. Is it perfect, by no means, but i think it will be a really challenging and really fun RC.

    You could watch this video and say “oh well the axial didn’t need all those fancy gadgets” and to a point, I would agree. But honestly, those fancy gadgets make the trx4 what it is. A cool sale crawler meant for fun. I have a trx4, I love it. I’ve had a few axial, I love them too. Great comparison!👍

      Riley A. I have both rtr’s of the trx4 and the axial scx10 ii and I noticed the try 4 seemed to be a bit more too heavy than the axial but with the retro axial you have to be very careful because it’s bumper sticks out quite a bit so there’s two cons to both that kinda make them even but the new scx10 iii I think is gonna hold 2020 atleast.

      I completely agree, I've gotten to drive the truck some more (since I haven't given it back to Stormer Hobbies) and it's even more capable than it appears here. But the accessories kill it, especially in our all uphill crawl area.

    This is the best comparison video on Utube by far.
    I do not understand why people try to compare the trx4 in front locked differential mode only to a axial product in all locked diff mode.
    This is not an apples to apples comparison and makes the trx4 look less capable.
    I would like to see the following comparison.
    #1.Both vehicles in low range and both front and back differentials locked.
    #2. Same video location, driver and driving line on the course.
    Need some side hill comparisons also.
    #3. Because tires and wheels are such large portion of crawler performance.
    Please use the same after market wheels, wheel weights and tires on both vehicles.
    Keeping in mind, most hobbyist will replace the rtr tires with their favorite type.
    Thanks for the great video. humbly submitted:

    Great video of these two trucks. The main thing I can see is the heavy body of the traxxas gives it a slight disadvantage to the a

    Nice video. I'd like to see more comp crawling with the Defender vs. all comers. The one thing you may have not have known is HOW to drive a Landrover Defender 110 in technical off road/climbing situations. They are exceptionally capable off road vehicles but you don't drive them like a Jeep or a Rock bouncer. You use the weight bias as leverage for tight spots and side hill safety is up to 30 degrees after that you run the risk of rolling over if you're not REAL careful with your momentum. If you watch some real 1:1 Defender 110's in action trailing and climbing you can see how the pro's get it done. I put a 70 gram chain on my front bumper to give it a little more forward weight bias. This helps a lot when going up steep inclines and hasn't caused any end over end rollovers going down hill (yet). This RC is almost perfect representation of the 1:1 in the way it handles. There are YT videos on how to drive the defender off road and hill climbing. They were very helpful to me to improve my crawling in general with this setup. The RC4WD version is a nice hard body "Shelf Queen". They handle like what they are toy models. They are only meant to look good. They "bounce" like a plastic toy while driving, are very "stiff" in handling IMO. Real vehicles don't handle like that except in NASCAR. Love your guys name, I was one in high school in shop class during the week and in the dirt on the weekends racing whatever me and my friends could get running. We started with go carts and by graduation we were building street rods and dirt bikes. Today we have RC cars and not just Airplanes ;v).

    Ownes Axial crawlers and Traxxas stuff, never was really a fan of Traxxas quality, however the locking diffs that the Summit has works great and very useful, never had an issue with them, so for a stock rig this TRX4 is pretty good.

    I like the look of the TRX and I guess for scale purposes, the lockable diffs is a nice feature. Personally I couldn't justify spending the extra money if I predominately wanted a scaled crawler. It looks like you need the diffs locked to achieve what the SCX10 does standard. However, what I do like is that 2 speed gearbox and that it comes waterproof out of the box! All round, I think it's a great little truck for someone who wants to open the box and drive. Definitely some features here that I hope Axial will consider for future models.

    Great vid and idea with gates! It seems to me that Axial has bigger suspension travel and it moved a little smoother and easier than Trx. Sometimes I thought Trx would fall. But anywas as an owner of Summit, I like the idea of two gears and diff locks.

    I like the Scale Trail setting, I think it's setting #4 on the XL5+ ESC. I really don't have much of a need for the super strong drag break, uh setting #5 I think! Only because I use reverse when I start down a hill and still have the ability to let out of the break so it will gain a little speed. If I want to go super slow I just give it more break, and it's totally awesome!!!

    I am sold on the trx4. WIth a few slight adjustments I think it can stomp an axial truck just like the ascender was able to do . I am happy with all the new stuff, axial had way to much of the market for too long. Thanks for the good video showing the side by side.

    With owning 7 SCX10's and 2 of them being the 10.2 I will at some point buy the Traxxas, only because it is new. I will also buy the HPI (If it ever comes out) Having driven both as well, I feel the SCX10.2 RTR performs better as you drive it the way it comes with no extra features needed. I think comparing them both again with the traxxas locked and providing some more sidehill and downhill would be great. I also think running the traxxas after the SCX10 allowed the traxxas driver to see what lines have been chosen and what hangup there are prior to trying it. I am still an Axial fan over all but will still add one to my collection.

    It's disappointing to see so many people instantly dismissing the TRX-4's performance as inferior because they were testing out the locking differential feature which made it look like it struggles in spots. I think a lot of Axial fans are going to be surprised when they get to run against one in person, even more so when we start seeing modded examples showing up that really make use of the new features and address the shortcomings of the RTR unit. I have a TRX-4 and a well tuned/modded Ascender.. It's easy to see the TRX-4 has a lot of potential when you compare it to the competition in person.

      As someone who wheels in real scale, as well as R/C. Your comment could not have been more accurate. The issue with many "RTR Crawlers" is they simply have spool axles. This is simple not how it is in the real world. The drivability of the vehicle would end up as utter crap.
      I'll address the differences in a different comment.

    Nice video, with a decent comparison of the rtr offerings of both companies ! I don't know who I would go with Axial is great and proven and obviously doing well because they are sold out everywhere haha but also that is a inconvenience for a new buyer who can't buy it because of availability. Some people may just buy a Traxxas TRX4 or a HPI Venture for being available at the time of their hunt to purchase. You have to keep up with the market demand ; ) either way good video !

    just picked up my trx4 today, and already put a couple packs thru it. thing's a ton of fun, and handles extremely well. my only gripe would be that heavy body, but i'm sure proline will have some sweet options in no time. (especially thanks to how much hype this rig is getting)
    i'm guessing traxxas also has an alternate body in the works as well, since it came with the 2nd rear body mount in the box. looks like it moves the rear posts back about an inch or so. nothing that i noticed in the manual for it tho, so no idea yet.

    The TRX looks awesome! I have mostly Traxxis, Some ThunderTiger 50 size nitro heli I built and a few others such as HPI Baja. I built my Crawler using worm drive diffs which is strictly a Rock Crawler but this new Traxxis dose everything my Summit does ie high low gearbox, diff locks but the Summit is not a scaler like the TrX. The Traxxis gets my vote..

    really good comparison. With a lightweight body the TRX-4 would hang right with the SCX10 in all situations, and probably be better in some. I really like the way the TRX-4 Sport model doesn't have the extra weight or servos to break. Might pick one up, and that's coming from a guy who owns an SCX10

    I feel the best test would have been finding an obstical one vehical can do and one can't to truly try and find a difference. otherwise it's just 2 rigs driving over easy obsticals. But in the end they have different wheelbases and widths so a true comparison isn't really possible. some obsticals are more easily driven with a short wheelbase and vise versa. But in end it comes down to driver skill and driver style. the heavy body on the trx is an issue for sure but it looks pretty good and will help in sales I'm sure. But as I stated in my original post, upgrades will be critical if this truck will stand the test of time the way axial rigs have. nice to see a new rig on the market.

    I think your comparison was fairly equal with the exception at 8.01 the Traxxas took a higher line in which it didn't do as well as the Axial. The Traxxas is a bit top heavy. While I feel Traxxas is billing this more as a scale trail truck, I think they produced a decent crawler especially for their first go at this genre of RC's. I'm not a Traxxas fanboy but I do give them credit for what they've done with the TRX-4. Based on previous Traxxas vehicles I've owned, the tires probably need to be upgraded and a more LCG body could help its crawling abilities. I am a fan of the LR Defender bodies so I'd have to see if weighted wheels or other modifications could help stability before replacing the body. I'm eager to see how the new Titan motor and HV ESC work out. I've always been quick to install the Tekin 40T Pro system in as I've had very good success and durability with it. Very strong motor with decent speed although the hand wound Pro version does require some proactive maintenance to keep it running at high levels.
    In regards to your video, I like the comparison as I'm sure this will be one of Axial's biggest competitors in the RTR crawler world. Next time it would be nice to see the comparison done with the same camera angles/location and follow the exact line of each other. A couple of the shots were in reverse angles which made it somewhat difficult to see how the trucks were hooking up in comparison to each other. Also, a line that is an inch off in one direction between the trucks could possibly change how they handle the terrain...hope that makes sense. Good video concept though as I am torn between the two. The one thing the SCX-10 has going for it is the huge aftermarket parts selection, although I'm sure parts manufacturers already have TRX-4 parts in design or even production. Thanks for the video!

    The SCX10-2 seemed to be the better crawler while the Trx4 was more scale. Perhaps it was a diff being unlocked on the Trx but the SCX10 looked like it completed the gates easier even with the non comp compound tires that come in the RTR version.

    • @NateRamsey
      @NateRamsey  7 років тому +5

      I'd agree it looked that way, firstly we have more time spent with the axial so we know how it drives. Secondly we did most the course with the rear diff unlocked, just to see what it was capable of. I ran the truck some more today and it's just as capable as the scx even with all the extra weight hanging off the back.

    I like your review. I have a TRX-4 and an original Honcho SCX10. Going to buy the SCX10-2 as well. But your complaint on the drag brake on the TRX-4 isn't really fair. It had a crawl mode, you just have to reprogram the ESC, takes about 30 seconds, and I assure you, It works amazing!

    • @NateRamsey
      @NateRamsey  6 років тому

      I've since bought a trx4, and gotten a chance to really use it. Yes I didn't have it in crawl mode, but it really didn't effect the test. I'll possibly be doing some videos on the mods I'll be doing, if anyone cares to see that.

    • @patrickkirwan4489
      @patrickkirwan4489 6 років тому

      I'd watch it! My concern was that it sounded like you were knocking a feature because the truck didn't have it when it actually did, and that could deter buyers for no reason. Because that is basically a must have feature, and expensive to add if a truck doesn't have it! I think traxxas knocked it out of the park ESC wise with taking the venerable waterprooof XL-5, and adding a crawl mode? Couldn't have expected more!

    consensus is that the trx tires are not so good and they are not at all scale, vs the axial tires are extremely scale and do very well on the rocks. guess we will see when the trx hits the market. not to mention for a scale truck the portals are not at all scale, and the sticker windows don't allow for interior visibility which for scale rigs is critical. I think in the end upgrade availability will be a big factor. If vanquish axle housings are produced then I feel the trx will do very well. I'm sure for some the 2 speed trans will be a cool option although I'm not a 2 speed guy. axial has a large chunk of the market in scale rigs so will fun to see what the trx can accomplish. Should be a fun rig for the average Joe who doesn't want to specialize in crawling.

    Sadly I don't have a good local hobby shop all they had was a revo and some sway arms for the slash but they didn't even have shocks or tires I was so disapointed

    I also was wondering if you have a Traxxas Summit? I have a summit and the thing is a beast and practically can't be stopped with the diffs locked. I wondered if it drives like a miniature Summit minus all the suspension travel the Summit has. And did you ever upgrade your Electronics ( I want what the Mamba Monster X ESC and brushless motor I'm not sure which KV it is) in your summit and have problems with the diffs? What diff oil would you suggest if you do have a summit or an idea to help. I spent about 80 to $100 upgrading my rear diff to hardened gears and the carrier that locks the rear diff and put and upgraded Center Drive Shaft and had friend rebuild it because he had had his Summit for about 2 years prior to me getting mine so he knew how to shim it to get it to be correct for how complicated the Summit is. It didn't last 5 minutes without destroying all the gears in the diff. Went back to using the $50 stock replacement diff and haven't had a problem since. But I'm sure that's only a matter of time running to 9000mah batteries at 120 C discharge rate running on 4S.

    Looks like axial tires have better grip on rocks. It would be nice to compare this rigs with identical tires installed.
    Also interesting how they go into deep mud.

      The Axial tires actually are much harder (inserts and rubber) compared to the Trx4, So in our high traction area they do ok. Traxxas could use stiffer inserts, but overall they grab really well.

    Nice video! I agree, I think the new TRX-4 is agate changer. I think there are 5 different profiles in the ESC, and this will give you more drag brake.. so, you should be set with that too! :-) Enjoy!

      We've gotten to mess with the truck more now and it's even better than we thought. We did this test straight out of the box, and the drag brake in default was fine for our test.

      Love it! I am planning on using some RC4WD steel wheels.. (to add better looks, and weight lower for better CG).. hopefully the stock servo will play nice.. otherwise, the only "upgrade" I see needed would be that. Excited!

    • @NateRamsey
      @NateRamsey  7 років тому +1

      Yea the stock servo leaves a bit to be desired. It's not bad by any means and we wheel on some really rugged surface. It definitely needs more weight up front. That'll be the first mod for me (whenever I'm allowed to mod it)

    In terms of Buggies, the SCX seems more like the RC-10, very technical and straight to the point. The TRX4, is a lot like a Losi, is laden with more tech, although it is not enough to really put completely over the SCX.
    Or in term of a automobiles. The SCX is very much like a JEEP and the TRX is like a Range Rover.

    Scx10.2 I think overall did best has a better turning radius . In traxxas defense they have higher clearance . But I'm still everytike getting the scx10.2

    Deuce has the rear ring gear on the left side of the axle.
    and the battery tray on the right side of the chassis, opposite of the torque twist. Oops!!!
    SCX10 has the rear ring gear on the right side of the axle, and the battery tray dead center of the chassis. It's so much better for serious rock crawling... I'm sure Axial will figure it all out one day ;)

    I love my Trx but as usual with Traxxas they give you bargain bin servos with a high end model. Just like with my Xmaxx the steering servo went out within weeks. Now my locker and shift servos are going out.

    I think the weak drag brake issue is not because of the Traxxas Electronics but rather the weak torque 21T 550 Traxxas Motor is why the drag brake is weak. Try switch to it with a decent 27T or even better, a 35T brushed motor and that will drastically increase drag brake power.

    TRX-4 = $450 with the factory two speed.
    SCX10 II RTR = $410 without the two speed, & $510 with the two speed option.
    Traxxas has changed the Scale Trail game from here on out ;)

    I'm sure your aware that there are...I believe...5 available driving modes for the TRX4 esc. It's delivered with the "trail mode" with just a hair of drag-brake, brake and then reverse . Also has a "child-mode" that cuts the voltage in half , a "Rock mode" with full drag-brake and instant reverse and two more modes.
    Really good video but should read the manual before you did the video so you could tell the viewers. And you could've switched the esc over to "Rock mode". One other really cool feature is the "Cruise Control".
    As your driving at the speed you want....just press the red button one top at the right....let go of the trigger and it stays at that speed. Hit the brakes and it shuts off....like a real car.

    • @Powerpickle68
      @Powerpickle68 7 років тому +1

      Madeline Lucas Actually the child mode as you called it doesn't cut voltage in half, that mode drops voltage by approx 20% thus top speed drops by about 30% which is how traxxas computes 50% less power.

  • @Clickbaiters
    @Clickbaiters 7 років тому

    The crazy thing about this video is that you never put the Traxxas ESC into crawler mode which gives you 100% drag brake and instant reverse, truck ships in "trail mode" out the box. Probably should have read the manual in the box first. You can see how the TRX4's top-heaviness affects it at times.

    The scx10 is made to be upgraded and modified while the Traxxas is basically made to be left the way it is. The SCX10 has a better platform with a dramatically larger aftermarket parts availability as well as a larger following of competitive drivers. Replace the stock A/T tires on the axial with KLR's and add your personal taste of scale parts to the body and you will never look at Traxxas the same. This is basically in regard to any RC hobby, Traxxas has always been the value-leader but that doesnt make them the best.
