In the spring of 1970, I was at a concert in Andover, MA, where the leadoff act was a red-haired woman whose voice just floored me. I was 18. After her set, I asked her if she had any recordings out. She was flattered, and said, "oh, no, I'm not at that stage yet." I knew that if there were any justice, anyone who could sing like THAT should be a star.
Her name was Bonnie Raitt, and justice prevailed.

Bonnie Raitt is one of the coolest women I have ever met. In 1976, I was managing Tom Hayden's campaign for U.S. Senate in Northern California. One of the really fun parts of my job was coordinating the entertainment for fund raising concerts around the State. One night in San Jose, with Hayden and his wife Jane Fonda sitting in the front row, I I was in the wings onstage watching Jackson Browne and Linda Ronstadt perform a romantic duet. Bonnie Raitt had already sung her numbers, and she had brought down the house. Suddenly, from behind, I felt a cold glass on my neck -- it was Bonnie offering me a Scotch on the rocks, and she said, "Look around, you put this whole thing together. I salute you!" We toasted glasses, and then she gave me one of the sweetest kisses I have ever experienced in my life. It was like a dream, and luckily for me, it lasted longer than the normal "showbiz" kind of kiss. Talk about conflicted -- there I was in a business capacity trying to act professional, and there she was gifting me with this totally unexpected bit of sensuality. Every time I hear her voice, even now 43 years later, her beauty and sexiness once again sweep me off my feet. I was 29 then, I am 71 now -- the feelings are the same.

I have been a paid musician for 40 years, bass player, and this live version, with many of the original musicians, of this wonderful song, is such perfection, in my opinion. It is rare that a live performance is better than the original studio version, but this one hits a home run. Bonnie and Bruce really deliver the goods on this one. Of course I love what James Hutchinson does on his fretless acoustic bass and is inspiration to me, as a fellow bass player. What a fantastic decision it was to have Bruce Hornsby play on the original, and this live version. I can remember the first time I heard this song, and immediately noticed and loved what Bruce did for this song. Thanks for posting this live version. A+ performance!!!!

Studio work is weird. I saw someone criticizing her on the video of the original over that "first take only" story. What they didn't understand is that when you're in the studio and do 5, 6, 7+ takes, it's just work at that point. You no longer feel like you're in the moment, it feels more technical than natural or emotional. An eventual perfect take or cleaning up parts later is part of many perfect recordings, but a perfect first take is the greatest way to truly capture an emotional song, and its way many of the best musicians strive to do it in 1, the first time.

I met a girl at my first job. She's my teammate. This is our both first job. She's kinda boyish, but she's so uniquely beautiful in her own way, and I find that really cool. I see her everyday, and we always ate together every lunch and dinner because that's what teammates do, right? I eventually developed feelings for her as time goes by, in which I'm trying my best to suppress it because I know it's wrong. I started to protect her, take care of her and sending gifts or special souvenirs for her whenever I am on vacation. Eventually, I asked her out and she said yes. I got to know her more and there are some things that made me fall in love with her more and there are some things that really made me uncomfortable when she talked about her past. But I tried to ignore it and focus on the present. After hanging out with her, I realized that I really do love her. Two days after our hangout, when we're in a call, she started talking about her ex and she said she's still not moved on. The pain that I felt when I heard that is too deep. It is deeper than jealousy. I thought that our hangout is considered a date. But for her, it's just a normal hangout. I feel like I broke my rules by showing my vulnerable side, in which I am hiding it to people because I have trust issues. I feel like I invested so many emotions for nothing. After 1 year, of being teammates, I finally confessed to her yesterday, and she said she never developed any feelings for me. I feel so heartbroken and in pain because this love that I am feeling for her is 1 year in the making. Building something precious takes time, right? I feel like I wasted my time thinking, considering and if this is really love or not. I never experienced this kind of feeling. I feel like I wasted so much time just to know that I am the only one who developed feelings for her. When I asked why, she said yes to hang out with me, because for her, it's nothing. It's normal for her because like I said, she's boyish, and she has many "boy" friends. I am really in pain. I feel like our values, differences and personality really conflicted here. I regret asking her out. I regret buying her gifts and souvenirs, I regret having a late night video game with her after work, I regret eating lunch and dinner with her. I regret every time I spent with her that I could have prevented it because It's already imprinted in my memory. Memories that I can't help but to cherish, but for her, it's "Normal". I feel so pathetic.
I still love her, but after 1 year of being teammates and knowing that I am the only one who developed feelings for her, I can't make her love me.

To my ears this totally live version is better than the studio cut. This one makes my chest heave, my sinuses leak and my eyes puddle up.

I have heard the album version several times, the dozen covers by top artists, this one has the most emotion beyond explanation. Definitely better than the album one. After all these years, Bonnie Raitt definitely and still owns this song.

It is love in its purest state, something so personal, so deep and transcendent that it is unconfessable and absolutely unshareable. It can only be lived, felt, without there being words or actions to communicate it.

  • @lynngeosits7138

This song is so powerful and moving because it is the universal cry of the soul that wants to give and receive love as a basic need, even when it is sometimes blocked or misplaced. Bonnie Raitt, in this masterfully done song, gives perfect voice to this archetypal longing and need, and it's denial.
