I agree. I heard it four years ago live at the Blue Note in Columbia, Missouri and have not been able to get it out of my head since. So glad I was finally able to find it so I can listen to it again.
I have been following Bruce since his days playing locally in Virginia in 1978. The first time I saw his band they played jazz, pop, rock, funk, and originals. Definitely the best local bar band I ever heard anywhere. I said at the time if he doesn't make it in the music business there is something wrong. It took 8 years until The Way It Is hit and history was changed. I don't think there is a more versatile, talented, and well schooled songwriter/musician on the planet. He does it for the music.. not fame and money. A pure artist. I have listened to a lot of James Taylor recently. Not sure if they have but I would love to see a collaboration between those two artists.
Ya... you nailed it... damn if u haven't heard his tunes in my head for so long. Just a testament to his craftsmanship. Music / tunes that live forever.... "that's just the way it is "...
Considering Bruce Hornsby has been singing since the seventies, his vocal tones are still as beautiful. His virtuoso piano playing is equally as good. Wow, this master of music never ceases to amaze. He is sadly very underrated. Thank you, Bruce, for your wonderful compositions that enrich the music in our lives.
The way Bruce changed this song is a testament to not " phoning it in" and it was a way for him to maintain musical integrity. I realize some fans need the original just like the record....but if you love Bruce Hornsby, then this is exactly why we love him. He can do what he wants, because what he does is so amazing words cannot describe it.
@@paulsmith9192 depends on the context.... dude has had enough success and reputation to screw around playing whatever the fuck he wants, whether the listeners like it or not
This is actually the way it was originally written, in a D Dorian chord structure. The recording heads thought that it was too dark, so he transcribed into a major key. Trying to find source for this.
If you haven’t seen Bruce live you should! I was fortunate enough to be able to see him in London November 2019 and I will cherish that memory for life! And btw, a ridiculously beautiful version of Mandolin Rain!!
I have 3 times. The first was about 10 years ago. I watched from the balcony as he played 3 different distinct melodies on the piano at the same time and I was blown away by his talent!
He performed at a festival I used to produce and he was the kindest, most professional performer I ever met. Signed autographs, posed for photos and was extremely nice to our backstage staff. I am a fan forever.
The intro is absolutely beautiful! I was introduced to Bruce and his music at the age of 9 after my mom and dad got home from seeing him at Wolf Trap back in 2008 and he will forever be one of my fave artists!
How does he do it? How does he keep re-inventing songs & making them just as good if not better than the original? 1986 Mandolin Rain is amazing but live versions over the decades have really taken it to a new level. This song with an orchestra feels so right & so brilliant. Beautiful.
This man is so brilliant he made us forget the Old Bruce with the range and offered a new mature Bruce with complete mastery of his art Everything is so perfect the vocals the combination of various musical instruments the piano
Shame on those 20 thumbs down! A wonderful rework of Bruce Hornsby’s classic by the song master himself. Thank you Bruce! God bless you for the music you have given me and hundreds of thousands of fans over the world that appreciate your songs and superb piano skills.
I took my mother to see Bruce and Jackson Brown perform both solo and duo without a band at The Mosque in Richmond Virginia many years ago. We still call it by that name even though the city changed it after 911. Both Bruce and Jackson played alone for a while, but then came together for a few songs. Bruce was simply unbelievably expressive and imaginative in his spontaneously improvised versions of his hits, like in this video.
@scottthendren6862 Joni Mitchell did this with her early poppy hit Both SIdes Now. At her tribute around the year 2000, she performed it as an adult who'd been through it all. It's the only reimagining of a song that comes close to this. Equally haunting.
Iam 50 I remember his songs at my lowest of lows and the best of times he never gets old to me! Just getting old sucks this kinda music and memories getting lost in time so sad
Wow Wow... Familiar with the original version then stumbled on this one... Bruce is one of those musicians that gets better and better through time !! Played this over and over, amazing, and so are the musicians that are playing with him !!
I just saw him in San Antonio on 10/28/23. This song is amazing. I love the way he has reworked his old songs and created another piece of art. He's amazing!
this version is MAGIC!! i have seen him in concert 35 years ago when he first arrived.......this song haunts me about the choices i made good and bad that landed where i am!! God bless YOU
Bruce Hornsby you are a Musical Genius, If someone were to listen to Bruce,s music in a 1000 years from now, i,ll bet it will blow they,re neural network to pieces. Such brilliant music for years to come......
Bruce at this age even, singing and playing these melodic notes with the same wonderful expertise and tonality. I am in awe of this virtuoso musician, his music makes me cry, it is so hauntingly beautiful. I have also heard that he is a very humble man-humility in such a talented human being is especially notable. May God endow him with the same spirit and talent forever. Thank you, BRUCE, and the person posting this.
Some artists make it big and never evolve. This is one of the best reimaginings of a classic tune I've ever heard. He goes off in a completely new direction. I find this refreshing, and wish more people could do this.
Just saw him live in Fort Wayne Indiana with a dear friend on 9/19/21. Just amazing. This version of Mandolin Rain he did was so beautiful. It's like he flipped it upside down from the original. Spectacular!
The most talented artist ever.Been a fan since my early teens in the 80s.First him on Rick Dee's weekly top 40 on radio station in Dublin Ireland. Maybe someday I'll get to see him live
Gareth - I hope you do get to see him perform live. He plays with such tremendous warmth, and he speaks with much humility. Great musician and great human being.
During the intro, I wondered where exactly you were going, Bruce. I was in anticipation. But the very MOMENT I heard the chorus phrase that gives a nod to the Ricky Skaggs / Bruce Hornsby album version of ‘mando’, I immediately put it back to the beginning to see how you set this all up. Even when noodling or improvising there is no doubt your musical mind knows the direction it’s heading. What is it about minor keys that make the hair on my arms stand up? Bruce, please never stop reinventing your music, never stop reimagining. I still can’t sit down at the piano and play the Aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations without thinking of the version of ‘The Way It Is’ you put on the Intersections album set… You are loved, admired and respected.
I remember a story, back in the day (80's), of your piano teacher, not approving of your 1-finger method. Too much happens on this Earth, daily, that anyone can keep up with, even if one day was 100hrs long. This Sunday afternoon in Danmark, you relax me from.....life itself, by revealing it with notes from the soul. Thank you, Bruce Hornsby.
it's a shame this man hasn't got all the recognition he deserves. I love many artists and bands but it's very rare to see a person who is so fluent in his instrument, as Bruce Hornsby. It feels like he's communicating with his piano more than playing it.
So beautiful! I love that, after so many years, Bruce continues to grow musically including reinventing the familiar tunes that we know and love. I hope that BrhyM swing back to the NYC area.
This version of this song is one of the most hauntingly beautiful things I’ve ever heard.....

Agree 110%. Hauntingly beautiful
Well said
one of the most underrated artists in music
Amen!
Totally agree. I'm 16 and very happy that I discovered Bruce's music recently.
Agreed!
He is what the world needs now

A true legend
Bruce James playing together. It would be a once in a life time event.
Bruce was totally in awe when playing with the grateful dead.

@macgreiner just too jazzy.his original sound soo much better

So true, his stalling is better than a lot of the new stuff out there today!
@@paulsmith9192 not imo. He hit the nail on the head here.
talk about a song speaking directly to your soul, my god this is genius.

Stumbled upon this interpretation by accident. Wow. Just wow.
The vocal and piano are magnificent
Bruce is a musical genius. So haunting.
Quite honestly, my most favourite song. Means very much to me
We love you and your music, Bruce Hornsby, in all of its manifestations.
The song really starts at 02:00. Man, that hits hard. Simply beautiful.
Bruce Hornsby is a thinking person's type of musician.
Jon Bream from the Minneapolis newspaper called it “thinking man’s deadhead” back in the day
A lot of music was back in that era. In today’s world, there’s a bunch of garbage.
This man is so brilliant he made us forget the Old Bruce with the range and offered a new mature Bruce with complete mastery of his art

Never has an artist that I know, REIMAGINED his music catalogue like Bruce has. The dead were free form, but Hornsby Re forms them.

Gorgeous performance 👏 ❤️. Bruce is magnificent 😊
A haunting reworking of a B.H. classic that makes it sound like a completely new song. Bravo!
Yeees … but I liked the original chorus better.
@@RayyMusikI grew up with the Range version so that will be my fave rendition but the intro in this was so beautiful!

I love this song so much but this stripped down version is really my favourite, it's beautiful.
Will be seeing Bruce and the Noisemakers in April at GPAC (Memphis area). His concerts are always a good time.
