Not a lot of people in your comments talk about it, so let me give it some appreciation here! If the beautiful storytelling and illustrations are the heart of FFIX, the themes of life and death and identity struggle must be its soul. I think this is best illustrated by Vivi. Some have even said he's the main character of the game - since he's not only involved heavily with the themes, but you control him first and he makes the first clear appearance.
He's a sobering combination of innocence and introspection. We tend to baby Vivi because of how adorable and naive he can be, but in terms of maturity, I'd say he's probably the most mature of the group! The 1-year lifespan might explain his rapid character development too.
Similarly, we see various characters address their identities as well, but Vivi is the first, I believe, and the most honest with himself about it. 💓

Btw, it's called Iifa Tree as in it starts with an "i", not "L". Can't blame you though, most people instinctively read the first letter as an "L". I read it as "Life-fa Tree" my first two playthroughs 😅

You could have stolen a flute from that giant boss, that is one of the rarest steals in the game, if not the rarest. But usually it's not worth to force yourself to steal it since it can take a loooong while. Also the message from Garnet in the fight, about Eikos summoning magic only showed up in the fight because they programmed it to trigger one turn after she used her summon. So it was supposed to trigger in the fight before already. But that often bugs out a bit.
And the Moon STone you got from the little stone puzzle, was the item you could have gotten in the early game from Brahne already, for your acting performance. So nothing too big. But shell is a nice to have against magic users, so it could have helped against the three Waltz dudes.
When Eiko equips a Moonstone as an add-on, Carbuncle's summon ability becomes Pearl Light, which bestows Shell to the party in place of Reflect, so it can be useful in certain situations.
Ahaaa! So that's what I would've gotten if Brahne was truly impressed!

Deffinatly, one of the OGs.
Never got around to completing it myself, but got up to disk 4.

To keep it brief for you, The Legend of Dragoon was probably the most spectacular JRPG when it comes to PS1 ones.
It got an innovative and engaging combat system for the time that really tried to make turn based combat more spicy and interactive.
The story is great and epic, full of reveals and emotional moments. You could even cry. With many people it happened :)
All the players that got into it (even late, like in these years) they all ended up loving the journey they had. :)
It's a very underrated cult classic and it's what you would consider a hidden gem. Well, it got famous even more over the years, so maybe it's not so hidden anymore lol but still many don't know about it.
The pre-rendered backgrounds are some of the best on the PS1, if not the best. Gorgeous looking. And the soundtrack is super unique.
It also had the absolute best (objectively) CGI FMVs. Like for real, you'll end up impressed by them especially the ones in Disc 3 and 4. :)
The characters are all cool and just a vibe really. Their relationships develop over time (obviously for what was possible on PS1). And the Lore...oh boy. The lore and the world building is so unique. I've yet to come across another JRPG like Legend of Dragoon really.
There are so many different races and the Dragons are so 'unorthodox'.
The only bad thing as far as i'm concerned was the localization, which was common for PS1 games and specifically JRPGs.
Dang, i'm so sorry Slash i got so excited, i went so off-track and gave you a wall of text lol.
If you play this, you'll make me so happy. I don't know if you noticed it lol but it's my favorite game ever, i've only beaten it 11 times 😝

It sounds like a game I would really like! I always tend to lean more toward the JRPGs. I might have to actually bump it up on my 'games to play- list' since it sounds really interesting! After Nier Replicant and Automata I'll give it a go.
