  • I love wearing tops, shirts and blouses with trousers and jeans and have managed to build up quite a selection of different styles of the years using my favourite sewing patterns. I often get asked about the patterns I use so in the post I wanted to share a round up of my top most worn ones.
    If you are thinking of making a shirt or blouse this summer then I hope it helps to inspire your next project! It's a fun and satisfying garment to make, and once you find a style and pattern that you like, it's easily to get different looks and effects by using different types of fabric with the same pattern, or my making some simple adaptions and customisations.
    Here me chat through them all in this video, or read the blog linked below for pictures and links to the patterns I've used and suggested fabrics!

    The first garment that I made that I actually wore was when I was 13. I made a jumper and really wore that a lot. I was a teen during the 70s and the wool skirt/ matching cardigan with blouse combo was all the rage. I used my babysitting money to buy wool for skirts and cotton prints for blouses that I matched to store bought sweaters. I sewed to stretch my money but also for the sense of accomplishment I got. My sewing journey has waxed and waned I spent many years sewing for my 3 daughters. I think the current environment for sewing is so exciting. The whole world is accessible to us for obtaining beautiful fabrics and unique patterns, I just received a beautiful cotton block print from India.
    I’m on a sewing “high” right now….I FINALLY worked out a pants pattern that fits me using the “top down center out” method! Next stop jeans!

    I've noticed lately that several pattern companies are only using like a hand drawn outline/picture of their garment, on the pattern envelopes. I don't even look at them any more. I'm a visual person and need to see fabrics, colors, etc that look best with the pattern. Your videos are always informative, Lauren, but I think this is probably my favorite of them all. Thanks for giving us a peek into your closet and a visual of performance characteristics of different fabrics using the same pattern.

      @@clairealden1182 I agree! I like line drawings too, like those found on the back of the package. But for the front I need something to draw my eye and give me inspiration.

      Just love a lot of those pattern
      But for us who live overseas, it is impossible to even consider purchasing any of your patters here in South Africa.

      To me, the difference between a shirt and a blouse is the collar. A full stand collar, button cuffs and possibly a yoke….more masculine design features make a shirt. Soft collars, pin tucks, floaty features, full sleeves….. then that’s a blouse.

    Thank you so much for making this video! It is really helpful to see various patterns made up in different fabrics and to hear about the different tweaks you've made to the patterns in your iterative versions. Also super helpful to hear how the fit is once the patterns are made up. I'm so glad I discovered your channel, will be watching every video from now on!

    Some great tips, thank you. I've just made the Geneva Blouse and also found the lantern sleeve is just a little too short so it tends to creep up the arm. I find the bell sleeve a nuisance, so next time I will make the same change as you did, with the channel for elastic.

    I'd love to know how you get on with the buttons bands & the interfacing you use as I'm finding that shirts I've made a couple of years ago, the button holes are now sagging & fraying so the buttons keep coming undone. Is there a way to fix this or any tips for preventing it please?

    • @LaurenGuthrieGhani
      @LaurenGuthrieGhani  Рік тому +1

      You could some fray check to help stabilize them a bit. I haven't found that issue you are describing myself but perhaps the interfacing was either too light weight for the fabric or wasn't fully bonded onto the fabric?

      Hi Mary, If it has a collar stand and collar stand I generally do put them in but I rarely use it as a personal preference for me, I like to wear shirts open at the neckline. I put it on only for aesthetic reasons and so the garment looks balanced.
