Wanted to share a couple of aids for sewing with slippery fabrics. I change my throat plate from a zig-zag one to the one with a small straight stitch hole. It does help reduce fabrics being pushed down into the plate. Also, have used my walking foot with success, again depends on the fabric. One more (which I heard recently on youtube) is to use the sewing clips instead of pins to hold 2 pieces of fabric together that like to slip apart. This is my favorite type of video: teaching more about sewing. Lauren you nail it because this a complete teaching video.....fabric choices, pattern and sewing tips. Thank you!!
Thanks Lauren for these great tips sewing lightweight fabrics. I'd never thought of keeping pins specifically to use on lightweight fabric, making sure the pins are nice and sharp.

I just picked up New Look 6574 dress pattern and I felt fabric selection would really make or break the dress and I feel more confident after watching these. Loving this series!!! Will you be talking about lining fabric recommendations? As a newbie it would be really helpful to know what types of linings I should use for different projects. For example I have a rayon challis fabric that is beautiful but i don’t feel like it’s opaque enough for a dress. What type of lining would be good to use that would still keep the nice drape of the fabric and maintain the soft feel against the skin. Also interfacings would be a good topic for newbies as well 😉
Thats a great idea, thank you. For the rayon Challis you have, it sounds like our range of plain viscose fabrics would be a good match. They are light weight and will move and drape in the same way as the rayon so won't take away from its floatyness but will provide that extra coverage you need for a dress.

I always use French seams when sewing with a thin, floaty fabric. Two reasons for this - a French seam reduces the amount of seam visible through the completed garment, and it results in a clean finish inside. My latest project was a princess styled dress (back and front) in a georgette / chiffon fabric. The dress is fully lined. I did not use French seams as the Princess seams are curved and require clipping - I could not see how this would work. As the dress is fully lined I don't have a problem with the visibility of the seams but I am wondering if there is a method of French seaming a curved seam which require clipping to allow for the shaping?
good question! Have you tried making the french seam really, extra narrow, it might just be ok, but would depend on the gradient of the curve. Other thing that crossed my mind was bias binding the seam allowances but actually that might just add too much bulk if its such a light weight fabric
Hi Lauren, this series is really useful, i keep coming back for reference!! thank you!! i recently brought some plain navy viscose to make an amy jumpsuit and it REALLY ceases!! much worse than using linen. could you please suggest what kind of viscose (brand even) i should buy? the viscose made all my makes looks really cheap too :{.
happy shopper hello, that’s great to hear you enjoy the series. It’s pretty normal for viscose to crease so if you really don’t like that then it might be worth trying a different fabric. Atelier brunette have a lot of viscose fabrics and I really love them (we stock them all in the shop) or you could try a viscose twill - they are a bit more weighty so would less likely to look cheap when sewn up. Hope that helps :)

I go slow, no pulling, use the correct needle and thread but every time it turns up. I press but as soon as it cools, up it goes. Do I need to press it every time I wear it and pray for the best?
Lauren, I want to make a petticoat using organza. Could you please help me?😊 I've never sewed on this type fabric. What should I do? What size needle, tension, etc: I Don't want to jam it up
Hello, I would probably use a size 70 needle and use french seams as its so delicate. Tension, I would just see what happens on your particular machine and adjust ad needed. Machines can vary in how they cope with light weight fabric so the best thing to do is try and then take it from there, its hard to say for sure without seeing what happens. If you have really fine pins I would use them, if not, you might feel more confident hand basting seams together instead so that it doesn't slip and move around too much when you sew :)
It really depends on what you are sewing and how often. If I'm sewing thicker denim for example then I'll start with a new needle or if I'm sewing light weight viscose I'll start with a new needle. if I've just been sewing things that need a normal size 80 (which does most things) I'll usually change it when I start to notice its blunt. The holes it makes in the fabric might start to look a little bigger and sometimes you can hear a different sounds as the machine stitches and pushes though the fabric rather the pierce it (which is what a new sharp needle will do). If in doubt or you have forgotten what needle is in the machine, then really its best practise to change it. Sorry its not a simple answer, but I hope that helps :)

Thats a great idea, thank you. For the rayon Challis you have, it sounds like our range of plain viscose fabrics would be a good match. They are light weight and will move and drape in the same way as the rayon so won't take away from its floatyness but will provide that extra coverage you need for a dress.

you need to keep it really narrow and make sure you have let it drop over at least over one night, if not too.
