- Deciding what project to make can be hard when there is so much choice so in this video I'll talk you though our selection of independent sewing patterns for shirts, blouses and shirt dresses.

One of the best pattern reviews I've seen Lauren, thank you!! Helpful to hear you talk about finished measurements vs body measurements, great deconstruction of the line drawings, brilliant to see the examples on your body...I'd never have gone near the Harewood but I actually think it looks great made up...I hope you do another of these...coats, jersey garments or skirts, maybe? As much as I'd like one on dress patterns, I think you'd be there forever ☺️

Thank you so much for this comparison Lauren! It was SO helpful. I was on a shirt making binge last year and so made up a few you mention here. It's so true that although they can LOOK alike there are significant difference between the patterns. Once you find the right shirt/dress pattern it then just becomes your TNT :) I do have the Alder but I haven't made it up yet - I'm especially keen on your denim one and I've been wanting a nice denim sleeveless dress for summer (I know here in the North we're just heading into winter :) but as you say you can make it sleeveless and wear a cardi over it in winter.
This is a really great video you've done. Other than pattern Brands I've never even heard of I haven't learned anything new. What you have done is consolidate what I have learned in 50 years experience sewing the majority of my own clothes! Well done, very well done I say❣️
Always read the fine print is really rule number one in choosing a pattern in my not-so-humble opinion. 😏 Fabric recommendations, list of Notions necessary to complete as instructed, how much fabric, the description detail and measurements along with take the time to really study the line drawings and compared to any photograph or artistic finished look and don't get sucked into thinking that's what you will look like wearing it. I've gone so far as to (very carefully) pull out the instruction sheet and check that out too. Especially important I think these days how expensive patterns are.
Reading all the detail can give me Clues to things I otherwise would have missed. Something as simple as a dropped waist, just how far down is that on my small short frame - one of those on the pattern was shown to be a good two inches and turned out on me to be halfway to my knee. 😝
Recently I went to make petticoat wanting it as full as possible chose the most likely pattern from the looks of it. I thought again I should probably check discovereing it was the least fullest of the three I had. And would have suspected it if I had not just gone off what the picture looks like. So after decades sewing the simple to exquisitely tailored I'm pretty confident I know what I'm doing - and still make mistakes. And mistakes resulting from inadequate attention to detail 😆 annoy me the most.

very helpful review pointing out the different stylistic detail and shapes etc. I have been struggling a bit with fabrics to use for shirt dresses and shirt/blouses and you have definitely helped give me some inspiration thank you. Great video Lauren. Could you do a video on different c types of buttonholes & their applications? Might be a nice follow up to the shirts seeing as, they are pretty important in the construction of a shirt. Also a lot of people are making coats at the moment so that would tie in.
Really helpful. I''m not a fan of shirts at all because I've never been able to find a pre-made one to fit me because I'm busty and the baggy look doesn't suit me. However, I've identified a few in your vid that I'd like to have a go at now, as they have more shaping. Thank you :)

Great video, thanks Lauren. It's great to see the patterns made up and worn and I'm adding the Melilot and the Kalle to my wishlist. Unfortunately the Colette Aster I made is currently in my charity shop pile. Unlike most patterns It's drafted for a C cup (should have read the instructions!) so the neckline which is low anyway gapes and I won't wear it - or make another. Do you know about the Maria Denmark Edith blouse and dress? I've made two of the blouse in cotton lawn and can recommend the pattern - it's a lovely shape, very flattering imo.

Wow that Messa blouse looks fab on you love the AB crepe, the straight version of the Alder looks great in denim with the contrast panel on the pockets. Did you use snaps for the closure? Thanks so much for the review, it's been really useful.😊

Hi, great video. I bought the Melilot pattern and I’m totally stuck with the collar and the hidden placket- any chance of a you tube tutorial to help??
Hi Alexandra, I'll be completely honest with you, I couldn't work out the hidden placket on the melilot either and ended up just doing the regular one. I had a read around a lot of people found it tricky too. I've done a hidden placket on the closet case kalle shirt before and its really easy to follow. They use a different method though and sew on a separate bit of fabric to form the hidden placket. Perhaps if you really want that version it might be worth looking at their sew along and seeing if you can using those instructions for the melilot.
I'll certainly add you idea of a tutorial to my list for the future.

Hi Thanks for the video I found it really useful to see the one you have made. As a newcomer to sewing it really helpful know where to start. I have only done skirts so far as tops look so much more challenging! I am a small (5'1") with narrow shoulders and a short waist but currently a D cup do you have any tips of what to look for in a pattern/sizings to chose I prefer more fitted tops but I am worried it will be too challenging?
Hi Emma, great, I'm so pleased you found it useful. If you prefer more fitted tops but have a smaller frame then it sounds like you might need to do a full bust adjustment on garments to accommodate your cup size. Otherwise you might think you need to make a bigger size which will likely drown you across the shoulders. There are quite a few good tutorials out there to show that and some patterns even have blog posts to show how to do the adjustment on specific patterns. I don't have much experience doing it for myself but from what I do know and have tried in workshops is that its probably easier to do it on a garment that just has a regular bust dart (rather than waist darts too), but I have heard people say its not too difficult to do on a princess seam design either - I just haven't tried it myself on that style.
