I may or may not have watched this 3 times already… Thank you Thom for showing several angles we hadn’t seen yet, and clarifying lots of details we had questions about.
I really think they missed out on this one. I really dislike that interior and if they wanted to cut costs maybe they should have ditched the electric tail gate and use better plastics inside.
Indeed. If you want a stylish, well built car, you don't *have* to go German......And that is one of the points that would have me considering it......
Having a speed indicator right in front of the driver is a must. One question: when you fold the back seats down do you have to move the front seats forward? From the video, it looks like one would have to, which might make it difficult to drive for tall drivers.
I like everything about it, especially the styling, except for the lack of display in front of the driver. Just seems weird to have to look to your right for displays. Couldn't they have at least put in a HUD?
A digital speed reading in front of driver rather than to move eye from front to the middle dash, and when stationary the front mirrors need to be retracted for safety
Thanks for the video. You earned a subscriber for these simple but effective videos and esp. for being the normal tall guy review, which we miss a lot in automotive reviews.
Helpful video, thanks! Maybe you could bring an "average" height friend so we could see how the legroom is when a giant isn't sitting in the driver's seat 🙂 We have the C40 and for us, there's ample passenger space in the rear with drivers 6' tall or less up front.
I think Volvo have cost cut in the right areas with this one. All the things missing don’t really bother me too much. If it’s just children in the back the lack of leg room isn’t an issue, we are used to a mini. I am still confused by the wheels, I asked Volvo about the ‘cover’ and they said that there are aero inserts that can be removed. I would like to see what the wheels look like without those as I’m not the greatest fan of these wheels
For the price its on sale I think these things are fair. So apparently the wheels have this partial cover on it, I'm still not sure how it works. Volvo is also saying nothing about it, how annoying haha! Let's wait and see. Thanks for watching!
ItIt even has some space, I'm 1.85m tall or 6.07ft, and yesterday I went to see the car in Ghent Belgium, and I fit in the car, both in the back and in the front without moving the seat, the front seats are super comfortable
Thanks for the excellent review Thom. Regarding the column stalks behind the steering wheel, it looks like the gear selector is on the right which means that all the controls for the direction indicators, lights and wipers are on the left hand stalk. Do you think the left hand stalk will be overloaded and make it hard to control those functions?

Glad to be of help! The wheels they showed in Milan, are accessory wheels coming later once EX30 production is up and running. Good luck making some great interior and exterior choices on your future EX30! 😊
Hi Thom, thanks a lot for this one! One thing I can't find in any EX30 review: what do you think of the quality of the dashboard material (specifically its upper part)? Is it a "soft touch" as in most of upscale cars, or is it a cheap & scratchy bit of plastic? Thanks!
My Skoda Kamiq has soft-touch plastic along the dash and the door tops. It feels quite classy and expensive (but probably isn't!). The Skoda's digital instrument cluster is neat though, as are the Audi-esque scrolling indicators.......The umbrella concealed in the door is handy too, as it rains a lot here.
What a nice car. The only thing I don't really understand though is, why they don't offer a headsup display. Me, as a Model 3 owner, I find that this makes a big difference on safety which I thought was a huge Volvo thing....
Sounds about right, if you take a look at the Zeekr X (sibling to the EX30) it has a head up display which is quite a big unit, so that would indeed explain no space for the soundbar and vice versa. Thanks for watching Gerald & Cory
My Skoda doesn't have a head up display, but it does have speed warnings, which can be set by the user. Just as handy, surely? I don't think I'd want anything reflected on the screen in front of me. I think I'd find it annoying.
So what do we think? Is this the new/EV C30? A bit bigger but still way faster! I like pretty much everything about it especially the interior design except for the display in the middle. That will take some getting used to for me. And did you say that the backseats don’t fall down at all? If so, I’ll have to look up the dimensions of the trunk area. Anyways, thanks for the video. I’ve been wanting to see one of these. Hope your C 40 is doing better.😊 Oh, and did anyone catch if she told us the base price? Like the cheapest version and maybe the dual drive /awd version? Thanks again Tom I’ll have to start following now ✌🏻🇸🇪
Great review! 😊 Being a tall guy myself (205 cm), I’m interested in the thigh-support and the position of the drivers set (I know it doesn’t have the extender). Does the front part of the Seat rise High enough to give sufficient thigh-support?
The following is written on Volvo's EX30 builder/customizer web pages under "Large door pockets": Smart audio design with a soundbar and woofer behind the dashboard means there are no speakers in the doors*. This makes it possible to fully utilize the front door panels for storage even for larger items such as bottles. The door pockets can also be used as cupholders. The inside of the door pockets is upholstered in a textile that aligns with the seat upholstery material which adds a premium touch to the interior. *The Harman Kardon Premium Sound features speakers in the rear doors and door pockets slightly smaller compared with the standard audio system.
Hi Thom, great video thanks! I have a question about the glass roof: Is there a screen or cover for it? I live in a very sunny country and whenever I leave the car outside this would be a critical detail to ensure the cabin stays cooler.
Thanks so much! I expect they will make an accessory cover for the car, similar as C40 has. The glass roof is treated to reflect a lot of heat so that's a good thing for sure.
The car turned out good. I think the demand will be great. By the way, I have a question for you. Should Volvo dealers service Polestar cars in Europe ?
6ft9 is very tall, I’m thinking 5ft11/6ft people won’t have their seat pushed back so far and the legroom in the back would be better for sure? I’m considering going from an xc40 to this - would that be mad?
I always enjoy your videos, Thom. Thank you. I am really excited by this vehicle. I am happy about the size because I have a smaller garage. One question… On the breeze, interior, does the speckled trim look nice? Or cheap?
Thanks Rob! 😊 I found the trim to look quite OK in person. Not really cheap, and, with the interior mood lighting I think it can actually look quite spectacular at dark, like a clear sky with stars..
Anytime! So the dealerships are getting samples (color and upholstery) in slowly but steadily. Suggest to also contact your local dealership to perhaps see it in person/natural light. That might help a bit. Take care! 😊
Hoi Tom. Mooie vlog. Mag ik vragen hoe je de in en uitstap hebt ervaren. Ik ben 1.93 m. en let natuurlijk altijd of ik goed in de auto pas (zit positie en het in en uitstappen). Dank je
As you know, the Google system needs to be restarted every now and then. In our XC40 and the C40, you can do it while driving and it doesn't impact your speedometer. Now with the EX30, you won't be able to do it and will probably have to stop on the side of the road every now and then to restart the system when the AC, navigation, GPS, Radio, Spotify or anything else isn't working correctly.
That's interesting, as I've only had to restart it once and that was because the Google Assistant stopped working. Has it continued to be a problem for you after the OTA updates, especially 2.9?
@tedlandy in the current Volvos, the screen with your speed stays active. If your speed is on the same screen that gets reset, you lose your speed, same as on Tesla. In Germany, you can pay a fine if your speed is not visible while driving and you get pulled over. That prevents the car from being TUV legal.
I was wondering about le flasher lever that could make the wiper dimmer to roll back and forth while pushing down or up on the lever with the tip of your fingers... Any clues? thanks!
One small question, since I am quite tall as well; does the front of the driverseat tilt? There is no extension apparently as you mentioned, so having this tilting of the front part of the seat is quite important for the thigh support, so that is why I am asking
Is there door pockets in the rear that can hold a bottle since there are no rear cup holders in the middle seat? Love the video by the way and I’m super interested
@@thom-lov Sounds good, thank you for the reply. Also, it looks like you pointed out that there are air vents under the driver seat for the rear. Is there vents under the right side passenger seat for the rear also? Thanks again!
Driver display is a must. So dumb having to look at the main display for speed, navigation etc. The whole car feels a bit disappointing. Maybe ok for around 20-25k €
Hi Tom, Great video! I think I also miss the roof grap handles in the front. What’s your view on the steering wheel? I spotted an emblem on the left side part of the dash when opening the door. I couldn’t figure out what it is for. By the way Volvo’s so-called cost savings for options is also a reduction in retail price for the customer (value for the customer is less). Guess that applies here too. Think I stick to my XC40 also next generation!
Thanks! Yep good spot, also missing in front. I like the steering wheel a lot, feels sporty and compact yet sturdy. The little emblem on the dash is 'just' a little design thingy with the EX30 logo on it. Thanks for watching!!
I think they are for the normal sound system. This is a pre production car so this detail will probably be gone on the production version with the soundbar.
I've loved it at start, specially the numbers, price, but there just are too many sacrefises and cost cuttings... only 1 speaker unit, no grab handles, plastic materials, lack of numbers, metal...
Could you please use somebody with normal dimensions to present space in the car? Like 160-180 cm height? Would be easier to understand how much space is available.
Did they give a reason why there will be no pockets on the Indigo trim? I mean they'd be made out of the same material as the Breeze interior (Nordico) so there is no valid reason I can think of to exclude them.
@@thom-lovI would understand if all trims had no pockets, but just Indigo? Surely pockets would not cost that much? It seems strange they would make such a big deal about the denim in the Indigo trim, yet they take away features from it to make it less desirable 🤔
Thanks Thom! Well done! I really like the front and side, back of the car is okaaay but not great, but it‘s anyway too small for us. The rear seat room is not for a family. The cost savings Volvo does (eg no climate vents in the back, no dimming of right outer mirror) … not good 😢
Nice looking vehicle, but this is the Ultra trim. Need to go Ultra to get power seats/lumbar, glass roof, and fast charging...which is kind of ridiculous. The core trim ($35K) doesn't even have USB ports.
Thanks Thom, for a 1.65m person would there enough space at the back? I know you are over 2m tall. Great video. Excited to see it in reality and can’t wait for the drive reviews. 👍🏼
Surely enough back space in your case. 😉 Stay tuned for more EX30 coming here, and of course driving once the opportunities arises later this year. Thanks so much for watching 🙌
I am 1.85 m and they fit well both in the back and in the front without moving the seat, so someone who measures less, has plenty of space, I went yesterday to see the car, and live it is beautiful, the front seats are super comfortable and beautiful.
No HUD is simply crazy. Luckily the car looks rock solid so you should be protected from the cars or people you hit, as your eyes are distracted to that huge screen to check your speed. Volvo safe ? Not for folks outside the car I suspect. HUD !
Can can check the clock / time on the screen in my XC70 as quick as I can look at the speedo, without head movement. I would like HUD and think this should be included on the Ultra model at least.
Here we go. A new EV from the company who published a study saying that you had to drive to the moon and back in an electric car before it became viable with it's CO2. The findings of that study have since since been found to be flawed, and that it is now around 17k miles before CO2 parity is reached....... A Volvo is one of the few foreign cars I would consider buying. I'll never forget that Top Gear thing from around 20 years ago, when they deliberately crashed 3 different cars into a huge concrete block at 30 mph. The first was a Rover 200 series. As you might expect, it was knackered after the impact. A complete write off. Next came the Audi 80. Slightly better than the Rover, with less intrusion into the cabin. Audi's (then pre-airbag) Procon 10 safety system had pulled the steering wheel in towards the dash. Last came the Volvo 240, with Clarkson at the wheel. He ploughed into the concrete at 30 mph as intended. Then there was a pause of perhaps 15 seconds or so, before Clarkson fired it up again, backed away from the concrete block, and drove off.....albeit with smashed headlights and a bent front end, but he drove away.......
I dont like the lack of a driver-dash display or the lack of speakers in the back, the fixed headrests in the rear. The view out of the back isn't great
Nice video. But almost everyone compare it with Tesla model Y and i don't understand why. This car seems to be the Tesla model 2 or however it will be called. 😅😂 I see it fighting with Kia Niro or MG 4 but let's wait to see / drive it and make a conclusion 😊 Nice video 👏🏻
I’ve seen many Vlogger’s videos on the ex30 but everything just repeats the specs. No one has driven it. Feels like they are reading an infomercial more than a ‘review’. Does UA-cam require them to mention if a promotional fee was earned by the Vlogger?
It's a first impression video, from my Volvo driver/enthusiast perspective. If videos are sponsored, depending on the local applicable law, the creator, should mention this. In my case it would, but this video is not. 😉
5:55 Rear doors have speakers
6:51 The Rear touch button allows the user to switch between operating the front or rear windows.

Can imagine that feels a bit disappointing. Perhaps the Zeekr X is interesting for you, if in EU..?
I’m a long legged person as you. Who has the best leg room, C40 or EX30?
I found it to be quite similar, of course that's a 15minute impression. Havent driven it yet. 😉
Ex30 is small.. Book only after test drive
Could you please use somebody with normal dimensions to present space in the car? Like 160-180 cm height? Would be easier to understand how much space is available.
Let me get an actor next time 🥴
@@thom-lov thank you, btw it’s actually incredible you fit in this car. As you said it’s rather in the small vehicle category
It is! Benefit of ev platforms, lucky me haha!
Cute ❤ volvo .....the face reminds me a little snow fox
I don’t mind not having a front dashboard provided there’s a hud. Other than that, I think it’s just dangerous
Has anyone done a DC fast charging curve on this model yet?
Does the rear have AC vents??
Yes mounted under the front seats
Never understood why they ditch a speedo in the front of your eyes. Now, like in a Tesla, you have look to the side to know the speed.
they sell light interior colors only in Ultra version which is +10k above the basic price. That's sucks : /
I believe it comes from the Plus pack on?
Did they give a reason why there will be no pockets on the Indigo trim? I mean they'd be made out of the same material as the Breeze interior (Nordico) so there is no valid reason I can think of to exclude them.
I guess it's a bit of cost saving, Indigo being the standard trim might save some production costs at that part. Just guessing though.
@@thom-lovI would understand if all trims had no pockets, but just Indigo? Surely pockets would not cost that much? It seems strange they would make such a big deal about the denim in the Indigo trim, yet they take away features from it to make it less desirable 🤔
@@cgiacca yeah no clue sadly. Classic Volvo unclarity haha! ;-)
Thanks Thom! Well done!
I really like the front and side, back of the car is okaaay but not great, but it‘s anyway too small for us. The rear seat room is not for a family.
The cost savings Volvo does (eg no climate vents in the back, no dimming of right outer mirror) … not good 😢
Thanks Timo! I agree with your thoughts. I was a bit surprised these little things are missing, but then again. It's a 'price fighter'...
@@thom-lov yep looks like that‘s the plan to sell due to low price! I only hope these cost savings don‘t apply to future higher models.
If they want to compete with the Germans they better not, lol! 😅
Good second car
think so too!
can the driver's seat be tilted?
Looking into that, keep you posted
For a car that is the same dimensions of the Renault Megane e tech electric, I don't understand how the trunk is so much smaller (420L vs 318L).
The EX30 has the battery motor on the rear wheels (RWD), E-tech is FWD. I guess that makes the difference..
@@thom-lov that's true
is the driver seat uncomfortble? in the standar edition?
I found the seat to be pretty comfortable!
Is it safe to say that If you Are 6.1 tall, you will be very uncomfy in the back?
It will be tight, yes.
@@thom-lov but is it doable for short rides up to a few hours, one review had a 6.5 guy sit in the back with no issues, i found that abit confusing:)
What is the cargo capacity with the seats folded down, anyone know? thx
Largest luggage volume mentioned in the tech spec is 904L.
Has there been any word on towing with the car?
1000 KG with single motor, 1400KG single motor extended, 1600KG with dual perfo.
@@thom-lov I wonder if this will also be for the US version. I have seen cars with towing capacity in Europe but are not rated to tow in the US.
Such a great video! I'm jealous you got see one I person.....
Thanks so much! It was great 😊😉
Im missing the wheels from the official presentation.
Will probably be an accessory/option later on.
I see it fighting with Kia Niro or MG 4 but let's wait to see / drive it and make a conclusion 😊
Nice video 👏🏻
Thanks so much! Yep you are very right. XC40 is more like the Tesla Y.
The rear doors actually have speakers
it does! Or well, the setup with the Harman Kardon apparently has and the normal system not..
Rear space with seat in my driving position and those small front seats will be a problem for me. This was designed for asian market
The smallest Volvo in the line-up for a reason. The 40 series surely offers more space!
May is written in contract. I‘m from Germany.
Thanks! 😊
This is very very cool but I'm baffled as to why Volvo keeps ignoring the Model Y sized EV. EX60? Anybody?
Coming soon!
@@thom-lov oh reallllly? Do tell. ;)
