How to Build a Bato Bucket System

- Bato bucket ("Dutch bucket") systems are great for growing vining crops without soil. In this video, Ruebin shows the parts and process for building your own bato system. Find a step by step guide here: university.ups...
A variation of media bed techniques, Dutch buckets break the media bed system down into smaller components (the buckets). This approach offers several benefits.
Each bucket can be set up separately, allowing growers to space out larger crops (like tomatoes or eggplants) without wasting media.
Separate buckets can be useful in pest management as well, since an infected bucket can be removed from the system without having to sacrifice an entire bed.

When is the table build video going to be posted?
Hi.. I just started farming for a while and I'm really fascinated with all your videos. I have a question regarding this bato bucket system. Why do you put clay-perlite-clay instead of whole clay? I'm having an issue where the stem of tomatoes fall due to the weight of the plant itself. I was wondering if whole clay setup will solve my problem. Thank you in advance.
What should be the space between two buckets and I see you filled the bucket with the medium. Wouldn't it hinder the root growth?
(Inexperienced so, pardon me if the question sounds funny).
I have set up this system and we were testing it today and nothing is coming out of our drippers. I have a 250 gph submersible pump and the 2 gph drip emitters. Our table is only about 2 ft high, Do I need a bigger pump or 1 gph emitters? Or does it need to build up over a long period of time then it will start dripping? We only have 8 buckets on the line.
My drip is way to light. I changed my drip emitters from button to pressure compensated ones both 2gph with no change. My flow through the irrigation system is solid because when i take off the drip emitters it sprays strong. Any ideas??
Hi been on your website but there are no bato bucket system on your site?.
Why non-circulating system?
Hello!
This type of system would be a recirculating system, the nutrients flow back to the reservoir after percolating through the buckets.
Thanks for watching!
Not sure the difference between this and a Dutch Bucket System (DBS). I have used a DIY DBS for several years now. I use it for strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, and even squash. Take note that some crops will require a lot of water! In hot weather, my 6-bucket system goes through 55-gallons of water in about 10 days! See "mhpgardener" channel for an excellent tutorial.
Yup same system! Thanks for watching and good insights!
I'm a plumber. An easy solution is to buy a "Fluid master Toilet float valve" Make a small wooden table for the valve and use a brick to keep it stable. Set the valve to the height that works for your size tote. Install a water line on the bottom of the valve with a 90 elbow right off the valve. Once the float is set the only thing you'll need to do is check your Nutrient levels. Another solution is a Bell trap. there are a few DIY's on youtube. Once your tote get to a certain level of water it will open a siphon and you can start a fill cycle. Aquaponics systems often use this method.
Hi,
I built this system in my greenhouse. The minute I turn it on, the drip emitters drip water for 30 seconds or so then completely stops. Water is still flowing in .5 inch poly tubing. Sometimes only few emitters drip water and rest do not. I am using 2gph emitters & 370gph pump. Any idea what is going on? Would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thanks!
Remove the drip emitters and test without them.
I have the same issue using the same pump. The flow is solid through the 1/2 tubing because when i remove the emitters it sprays strong. Did you ever find a solution?
It's 5 years ago i can see. Maybe my answer is practical for someone else. You need enough pressure to get the manure water through the valves. At this point/place i read that 1 bar should be sufficient. But i am not sure. I'm looking for the right pump at this moment.
move the legs on the table in from the ends, I know you won't have much weight, to minimize the possibility of sagging over time.
Thanks for the tip!
This is one of the best video's on the subject, thank you guys! Can you tell me what's the specific reason for the 90 degree angel drainage from inside the buckets? Is that to keep the lower 2.5" of water in the bucket for a longer period?
The web address below for step by step leads to a broken link. please advise, thanks
for a bato bucket with Cocopeat as media, do we need continuous flow of nutrient solution or should we time the pump to give solution at some frequency?
i cant wait to set this up in Spring time!
All the best with your crops!
I didn't see anything about the drainage! Did I vague out, or did you guys forget to show that. Please reply. Great video presentation none the less.
Hi there - Looks like that part didn't make the video. You will install the elbows inside the bato buckets so they let the water drain into the return pvc line. It's good to have a layer of larger clay pebbles so the perlite doesn't clog your elbows as well.
What's the specific reason for the 90 degree angel elbows? Is that to keep the lower 2.5" of water in the bucket for a longer period?
CClove ktl
I know I critisize alot of posts, mainly because Im a free thinker, but this is as easy as it gets.. Good job! Though I must admit that I laughed a bit when I saw the binder clips.
Glad you enjoyed it Daniel. Gotta use what you have!
Can the same materials be used for a commercial system? Is PVC or PVC-U pipe able to be used in a commercial perspective?
Could you please explain how your table is built in more detail. I appreciate your videos they are very helpful. Thank you for your help and I look forward to meeting you.
few question please .....
i drill the 20mm hole at 2.1/2" height in the bucket from bottom. whats your recommendation.
how the saplings should be transplanted. A detailed video for it would be appreciable. and do's and don't s in doing so.
after transplanting some saplings dies off . how to replant another
Hey I have fish Tank and one of those Walmart Buckets wat Would be your best set up for this Please
It's simple and I like it.. No really confusing work.. It's too easy to build and I thnk it's working well. Yhank. You. I've sern a lot of video but this one attract me. May put a little bit of upgraded.
Great video...I'm trying to figure out whether to go for bato buckets and normal free draining pots. Assuming in both cases the nutrient solution is reused the only difference is that in the bato bucket there's always a small layer of water. What is the advantaged compared to free draining pots?
Thanks for the video. Beautiful setup. Where can you buy the buckets? Thanks
Is it preferable to use perlite and clay pebbles or clay pebbles suitable without perlite?
hello i see there is a elbow inside the bucket drain .. what is the reason for that
you skipped the part where you added the drains...
Very nice video :) Could you please add a clip to show how the system should work properly? I wasn't quite clear on what to look for. My husband and I are buying a farm with 80 acres and I want to set this up- and get it right the first time!:)
Also, do you have a written list for the items needed?
This is great video. I would like to know how to build a table like the one you used i the video.
What if it rains and fills your buckets more?
What are the specifications of pump ?
Good question i also like to know.
This is a Dutch bucket system. It is nice when you just steal an already established idea and change the name of it. No need to come up with an excuse either, since I will not waste any more of my time with this.
You are very funny. You should eat more salads. Good for your digestion
Thanks for this video. Makes things look so simple. Quite stoke to want to try this out.
Whats the estimate amount of perlite to fill one bato bucket?
Are y'all keeping this system outside? If yes, how do you deal with rain diluting your nutrient solution?
Hey Jeff, yes this is an outdoor system for the summer. It's a pretty small system so we're not too concerned about dilution from rain. We keep the sump covered up and luckily for us in this circumstance, we don't get more than 10 inches a year on the high plains of Wyoming. We're just happy to be growing outdoors!
Could you have just put the drain line on an angle to drain in place of cutting the bench ? Also on a covered patio / porch can these be placed on an inside wall? Thank you for the information.
For sure. The table is nice because it keeps your buckets off the ground and away from some pests and allows you to angle the line if you have a level surface, but it's totally possible to have your system on the ground too.
what size water pump do use use for that system
I rather make something that will air prune
This is great content ! keep it up :)
very nice video, crisp and very informative. Thanks for sharing.
what a joke
How does drip irrigation compare to ebb & flow? Would clogging be manageable with aquaponics?
This is just constant drip irrigation so the pump is always running in order to keep the roots moist. I'm not sure we've seen an aquaponic bato bucket system before, but as long as you have appropriate filtration you should be okay.
Cool, thanks.
Love you guys! I would like more info on the tables. My son and I are just getting started and all the pointers you can give are welcome.
Awesome thanks for watching Sean and best of luck with your build.
awesome vid me brudas
Hey thanks Shane! Have a great weekend.
does the water run 24/7
Yes it does.
+Bright Agrotech cool thanks
I've seen lots of dutch bucket videos refer to a watering schedule "of your choice" but the implication is clearly intermittent watering rather than constant. Can you comment on pros/cons? Also, does vermiculite work as well as perlite for this?
is the depth of remaining water 5 cm only
Yes, it's very shallow.
thanks
Thank you, this is the simplest way I seem
That's great to hear!
Great demo! Thanks! :)
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching as always Richard!
Was checking my office for the hidden cam/mic you guys have here. I was just discussing adding bato buckets to the list of 'need to buy' items with my business partner yesterday. Coincidence? Maybe . . . ;P
ha ha, I wish we could say we are that wise!
You guys makes up your own word for the Dutch bucket system so your not found in a Lawsuit
Thank you very much for the video! Where can I find the bato buckets? HD, Lowe's, Walmart none of them has it. Any idea?
