Great job, can't wait to see the results with this system. The indoor PVC pipe system I made based on your videos produced a great lettuce harvest. I will try dutch buckets for my tomatoes now.
There's a lot of good advice here. I never heard of Panda Film before but I wish I had. I just finished painting 12 more buckets. I'm looking forward to giving it a try. I'll add a few thoughts. The drain does not have to be sloped. It will work just fine level. My buckets and drain both lie directly on my deck. Use silicone calk to "glue" the cap and elbow in place. That leaves them removable for cleaning. Some brands of perlite are very dusty. I had to switch brands of perlite to fill some of my buckets and there was so much sludge that it blocked the drains. Now I dump the perlite into a tub to wash it first.
Next time get steel strapping, the zip ties won't last in the sun and the steel strapping is cheap. Sometimes called hurricane or cyclone strapping used in house frames and by plumbers for hanging pipe under houses. Love the videos dude. Keep it up
Just made some myself using the same containers from my fresh wort kits😁 And I was thinking of using panda film for mine as well. My local hydro shop ought to have some. They sell all of the gear for indoor hydro as well. If it all works out with my capsicum, tomato, lettuce and spinach, I might try and grow some Esperance tomatoes😉 And I do need to put a brew down this weekend too
Marker 11:55 install a long screw at the bottom portion of the narrow side of the board facing out the pipe should rest on the screws and the elbow should descend into the receiving hole. Also you could use the zip ties to loop over the outlet pipe and support the pipe with the elbows.
After everyone’s comments about the beer, I had to push pause and go finish my work, so I could have a beer and watch this with y’all. All right I’m back, who needs a freshie? Need a chalkboard by the tapper so ya can keep count.
Is the pvc pipe safe to use? Does it leach chemicals? The water reservoir is made of plastic as well. Does that leaches chemicals? I am using food grade buckets but how do you find the other items that are food grade? Or does it matter? Great video.
PVC materials are highly carcinogenic, and are especially prone to leaching when exposed to heat and UV light. This absolutely can be uptaken by the plants, thus contaminating the food. Even when food-safe containers are employed, the pumps and tubing are almost always made from PVC.
I did much the same. Instead of 19mm drain tubes I used 13mm. I eventually stopped using it. The roots from the plants grew down the drain tubes and blocked them.
Hi! It would be really nice if you can enumerate all the items you have used in the description box cause sometimes its a bit hard to hear the words. Thank you and great vid!!!
I am looking to setup a deep water culture system with top-off reservoir. How often do you perform full water changes? How often do you fully drain and clean the buckets?
How long and how often should tomatoes be watered when growing in perlite? I bet once a day for an hour with kingrollers 2 liters per hour? Will it be ok?
Two questions! 1: Why are you only using perlite on this one and not the perlite/vermiculite mix? 2: since you have the mini reservoirs in the bottom, does one assume that the paint strainer bags will reach and sit all the way to the bottom of the barrel? Then - aren't you afraid of water becoming stagnant? Keen to see the grow! Add chillies!!
great build.wonder if you ever fitted float valve.its just that when you start your pump your water level will drop and float valve will start replacing that water and by the time the system balances itself out you could end up with a bit of a flood.
“A bit like a mini nft”… make the drain tube a 4” pvc pipe and between each of the bucket drains you could plant NFT strawberry or lettuce, etc? I’d love to see that video.
I really enjoyed this video. You do a great job explaining how these hydro systems work. I am using the same 20l containers you are using in this video. What would you recommend to cover the top of the bucket to prevent rain water entering through the top and diluting the nutrient solution? Is there a plastic lid alternative that fits over, Or is there no need to worry about it?
I didnt read all the comments, but how does your float valve not overflow when the pump is running and the liquid hasnt returned back to the reservoir??? Thanks for the videos!!
Excellent video and I feel I am learning more and more about hydroponics. Love the way you do your videos and the beer thing was cool. I found myself wanting a beer...lol.
You seem like such a fun guy and I really wanna have a beer with you! 🤣 Thinking about getting into hydroponics once I've got enough space so your videos are really interesting!
I like that the (assuming res float slightly below the return pipe) return pipe is where it is to create a constant waterfall effect that may aerate it some ?
Really great stuff man, big fun here! What I miss though is really the water flow for the buckets, or the volume of the pump (l/min or per hour). Just put mine up but I do not get the flood and drain motion. Maybe somebody else can help out?
Hiya Hoocho, I've enjoyed your videos but I can't help noticing that your surrounded by some very fire volatile vegetation, depending on where you live in our beautiful country it may or may not be a problem, I'm in my 70's and for most of my life I was fire fighting both at the grunt level and Incident Controller so I know a little about fires, if your not positive yourself on whether you are at risk either talk to your local Fire Brigade or if you prefer you can contact me. I also brew my own BUT what is passionfruit larger 🤯 I'd hate to miss out on a good brew idea.
Hi Mate, love your videos, love the humour, love the beer, put my money where my mouth is, went the patreon route, yep didn’t take the more money than sense. Option but figured if everyone that watched and enjoyed your vids went the 3 dollar option you’d do ok, keep up the good work. Used to live in Amberley when in the RAAF, would drop in and have a beer if I was still there. peter
Appreciate that a bunch mate! Every bit helps move towards my dream of being able to make content full time rather than it consuming all my holidays and weekend (not that I mind, it’s my passion haha)
For my failed Kratky system I used 20L white buckets and spray painted the outside black then resprayed them white with the cheapest nastiest paint I could find (fumes were almost toxic). The heat still did a number on them and got stuff all out of the system.
robert walker kratky is different, the buckets would heat the nutrient solution directly. These buckets are not completely full of nutrients. Which give a wider margin for error.
Anyone know if there could be any negative consequences adding coco peat to the permiculite? Hydro shop here in WA is this video method good for Queensland with humidity but so dry in Perth WA we need to add some coco peat to help the roots. Bout to add it and thought I’d ask here
Hello! I'm Davide from Italy! I really appreciate your videos! They are very informative and ingenious! Very good! I would like to ask you what kind of fertilizer you use! Also, how much do you set the PH and EC in uS / cm²? Thanks in advance for your valuable reply!
great video well explained do you sell the containers cant find any none online im in waterford seeking some happy to pay .ive subscribed and a big thumbs up.
Just started setting up mine just about the same. Going to use clay balls... how is the use of the new nutrients? How much of the cal are you using? Still using the 1g a litre for the daiamond series??
so is perlite the best for this type of system? wouldn't use cococoir in same bags? damn your beer systems makes me miss a good bevy went off it in 06!! nice build Hoocho
@@Hoocho cool thanks mate, the new "Hoochinator" propagator tub the tomatoes lettuce and cucumbers are exploding have to get off my butt to get other systems up and running!
Memloc hard to explain but the Ryobi multitool has a head that can be removed and you can switch it with the aeg changeable head system. It’s something you learn when you work in hardware stores that sell both products.
michael topolino that’s the plan, when I picked the cable ties I already eyed off the metal ones. I only chose these because I try to make everything in the videos widely available to everyone.
Love watching the effects of the beer as the video proceeds ...

Heading into fall up here in the States, so I'm going to enjoy watching your dutch bucket system videos as I wait to build mine next spring.
Next time get steel strapping, the zip ties won't last in the sun and the steel strapping is cheap. Sometimes called hurricane or cyclone strapping used in house frames and by plumbers for hanging pipe under houses. Love the videos dude. Keep it up
I concur...my zip ties degrade extremely fast w/ the UV in the southern states.
Just made some myself using the same containers from my fresh wort kits😁

We are buying a Dutch Colonial home this spring, so this is perfect.
You'd better be using it for tulips.

great idea. tip for the zip ties on future projects.. get the ones with eyelets for screws and the integrity wont be challenged.
Who's counting, lol, good job. Been watching a lot of your videos this evening.
I'm digging the beer fridge dude!
Thanks Hoocho
So "Mini NFT"...could you put a few net pots in your return pipe?
I did much the same. Instead of 19mm drain tubes I used 13mm. I eventually stopped using it. The roots from the plants grew down the drain tubes and blocked them.
It's a great video, so informative in a simple way, Thanks for such an amazing contact dude

Lallie here! Need mostly drainage for this one. The roots will leave the strainer bags and the nutrients will drip through and replenish the res.

Does painting the buckets first with black and then white works? and leaving bottom does not paint with black and just white.. Please guide
I drilled a hole in the side at the top and fed the feed pipe through to ensure it wouldn’t fall out and empty the reservoir
Fantastic idea. I might just do that!
Kickass! Thank you Hoocho!
Hello, have you tried using coco chips instead of perlite?
You should look at Alaskan Grow bucket. No electricity.
Hope this isn't a stupid question, but does it leak where the small pipes are joined to the large black pipe?
Another great video
Legend love the beer counter 🍺
Ben Tweed 🍺
1:38 20 port? Is that equal to a 5 gallon bucket container? I looked online and it keeps wanting to give me pint instead of port.

What did you use to poke the holes for the flex tube barbs?
One of your best. Thank you.
If you had a two tear table could you drain the top bucket into the bucket on the lower shelf before it goes into the drain to the reservoir?
What is Panda film? Contact paper? Shelf liner?
Very amazing bro.

It's odd but I got thirsty for a 🍺 on this one. 😉🤣 Love this system too! Nice work.
You should use zip ties that have a hole on the end. They are designed for securing them with a screw.
Cool video bro, fun watching tipsy hoochos. By the way the facial hair looks a lot better 🤣🤣🤣

Hello
continuous watering or what the ideal watering frequency.
Thank you for your reply
15 mins 3 times a day, 6am 11am 4pm
Why did you put 2 tubes into each bucket?
Hey bro do the drains that go back into the return pipe need to be sealed around the gaps to stop algae growth or it doesn’t matter.
Great Video very rich with info which I would like to use in creating my own version of a dutch bucket system in South Africa
Whats better grown in NFT vs. Dutch??
For my failed Kratky system I used 20L white buckets and spray painted the outside black then resprayed them white with the cheapest nastiest paint I could find (fumes were almost toxic). The heat still did a number on them and got stuff all out of the system.

hi. love your videos. where did you get the sump container from please. Bunnings?
Robin Hoogenbosch yeah mate just off the shelf at Bunnings
You do realize that yellow top on your reservoir will leak light - it needs to be covered.

did anyone ask your total cost , without buckets since free for you? and without that excess perlite ? obviously including endcap and the pump ;)
Buys a kegerator, fills it with light beer HAHAHAHA great videos. thanks
MINI NFT FOR HERBS!!!!! Or anything!!!!! Keen as!
Do you have to use perlite or can you use a coco perlite mix, or those clay balls? What ki.d of options do you have for media?
I believe you can use anything as long as it doesn't trace into the system and the roots can set properly.
Can you eliminate the medium when it comes to the Dutch bucket like how you did for the NFT's with the pucks ?
Hey mate great video! Does wind effect your system?
great video well explained do you sell the containers cant find any none online im in waterford seeking some happy to pay .ive subscribed and a big thumbs up.
