How much more difficult is this against hands down style?

Kind of depends, hands down style lends itself to wrestling style wrist drags to get in a close grappling scenario

In southern mantis we use similar techniques. You can just basically attack the guard with any strike and then turn that strike into a grab and then turn the grab into a jerk on the guard to open it or turn the person slightly then strike through with the other hand in a quick rhythm, its actually pretty easy to hit a guard as opposed to a strike out of the air.

It also helps a ton for avoiding strikes like, making them throw a right hook across their body by yanking their lead hand across ruining their power

I've tried to teach people this, but it takes a while to get good at so they would never use it.

Weird, I found it super intuitive. It’s something I started doing the first time I sparred in boxing. Just felt natural I guess from years of play fighting and street fighting as a kid
