Gotten hugging Goku in the beginning never bothered me one bit even after you explaining it. He hugged his dad he never knew for the first time and then he hugged him again when his dad is about to leave forever. It’s still only been a day and he’s probably all kinds of emotions.
It doesn't undercut the later moment...of course, it is however odd to go from the heartwarming scene of a kid hugging his dead dad who he's just meeting for the 1st time to...the Manga material of Goten & Trunks immediately dismissing Goku in private.
@@SonicmaniaVideos not really…..Vegeta and Gohan (presumably) were dead and Goku showed up at the lookout and said he was knocked out and couldn’t help. Then he admits he couldn’t have beaten Buu anyway. So it’s understandable Goku wouldn’t have been held in that much high regard to teach the boys a technique to beat Buu.
@@SonicmaniaVideos I argue that Goten has never seen his Father fight and the only time he "felt" his Dad fighting force, was with him beating his best friend Dad and being out of commission when Vegeta sacrificed himself. Honestly, it sounds less like Goten is dismissive and more like he doesn't trust him when it comes down to fight.
I think it was that Toei doesn’t like the idea of abridging their material but Funamation loved it but couldn’t include it cause Toei had final say. Which sucks but hey at least the clip exist online!
@HotAnimeBabe99541 Yet you had some TFS voice actors appear in their other titles and even in Super as extras. Plus, I thought the issue had always been the footage used and never really how it was used. They could be funny about it but it was using Toei's assets that burned their buns.
Imagine if, when Goku showed up at the fight with Nappa, Nappa started praising Goku's strength, and suggesting he and Vegeta should have a good fight. Vegeta would've been quite displeased at the comparison. So what I'm saying is, Toei is Vegeta, TFS is Goku, and FUNimation is Nappa. That makes sense, right? (Also Japanese IP laws and feelings about parody.)
There are a few filler moments in Dragonball that stand out to me, and I'm right there with Lance on the Videl training sequence. When the animation team decides to flesh out already established scenes that Toriyama just didn't have time for, it usually goes okay. It when they have to invent stuff completely original where they can be iffy. Drawing out fights/reactions-to-fights is another crime.
Maybe for the next part you should open at the very beginning with "On our road to GT" or something like that so as many people possible know you're going that route.
Videl was NEVER in a life and dead situation like Gohan was, plus he was a little boy at the time where such situations occurred... I feel if we're looking at who got it so SO much worse, its definitely Gohan...
So when are we getting DBZKAID TV? A comprehensive review and analysis of all the changes, removals and additions to the re-broadcasting of Dragonball Z KAI? Keep you in business for another 10 years, at least.
I always saw the "Dragon Team" stuff as their whole collective; including the likes of Oolong, Puar and Bulma. The "Z-Warriors" is like a branch of the dragon team that just encapsulates the ones that can fight; like Goku, Piccolo and Tien.
Speaking of The Final Chapters, Buu breaching the afterlife was kept but in a weird way the left out the context for why Yamcha and Krillin were fighting. I mean, you could interpret them as training to pass the time but the removal of any festivities makes it weird. Not even a narration gives some context. They didn't even remove Pikuhan or other Other World Tournament fighters aside from when they spoke. While we got a clip show of them back in the 98th episode of Kai, that still makes them feel like weird extras. They really could've cut straight to Goku and Vegeta attracting Buu with their Ki.
@HotAnimeBabe99541 Kai did right by keeping a lot of the filler that improved the story from Vegeta stealing Dr. Brief's spaceship to the Dragon Team trying to help Gohan against Cell. Though... they could've done better to trim out Gohan vs. Freeza. I don't mind it but it does feel out of place.
Kai is wierd. Like they “fixed” vegetas armour when he’s not on earth but not nappas? Even if they’re win the same scene. They keep the finger count from the anime and ect ect. It’s less a aniamted closer to manga adaption more log a DBZ lite. Still at least we have a version of DBZ that fits with supers anime. Kai-super Z-gt And the manga and dbs manga are the original of the 3 main canons. There. Everyone has something to enjoy!
@@HistoryandReviews What do you mean? End of Z as in the end of the story in Dragon Ball Z? Because all three versions share that, but lead to different things. Well, Super is before in both continuities but which one it predates isn't the same for the both of them.
I really appreciate you doing such an in-depth analysis of this series. So many people I know only watch it for the fights. I'll be freaking out about whatever stupid retcon or continuity error Super introduces, but they just care about how hard Goku punches.
I think the wire-work was purposely shown to 'explain' that Goku and Cell weren't really flying, but held up by wire coming from.... um... somewhere lol. They were all 'tricks' after all.
It's amazing how much the anime version has taken over my vision for the series in a lot of cases. I swear the Spopovich satan connection was a thing in the manga too, and i say this having read the manga multiple times and owning it.
It would've been a good idea for the anime to establish that the ability to kill someone already dead as a trait unique to Boo. That way the final battle could still carry dramatic weight without contradicting the afterlife rules already established.
@@kingp260 considering Boo is practically invincible until he was beaten up by Evil boo, Gohan, Vegito, and Pure Boo, and Pure Boo is killed by the Genki Dama, and he has magic, maybe they could’ve done more with him regarding consequences for fighting him than just pulling a retcon Toryama and the animes will immediately ignore even in DBGT, let alone Resurrection F onward.
@@bgvo4373 They do actually do something with Buu's weirdness in the Moro Arc of Dragon Ball Super. Moro uses his magic to sap Goku's ki meaning he can't fight effectively, however Buu's power is revealed to come from just the raw power of his body instead of his ki, meaning he is completely unaffected and whoops Moro's ass. (Until Moro gets his youth back and thwomps him due to a raw power difference), but a cool concept never the less.
The Anime's version of Videl learning to fly was the closest DB got to actually explaining how KI works. "Z-Team" and "Dragon Warriors" have a nice ring to them, If only they were consistent on what to call the gang.
When you finish the Boo arc you should do an anime version of your top 10 list I'd love to see if the Buu arcs better filler gets the anime version a score higher than 1; or if the Saiyan arc would get the 10. Or like how low the freeza arc would fall.
I really like how the anime depicts the residents in Heaven. They're not bodiless clouds like in Hell but not heroic enough to get their full bodies like those on Grand Kai's planet which could just be Valhalla.
4:09 -4:24 is so true this video was great I also got my mom to watch dragon ball a few months ago she told me yesterday she's at Goku and Chichi's wedding and she's loving it
5:42 oh my God, an underrated joke about tax evasion. I hope more people got it than likely did, bloody good work mistarefusion. This is why you're awesome
Yeah the anime taking time with Videl learning ki definitely is a highlight. Another thing that makes part of me wish this truly did become her and Gohan's story
The anime makes Gohan and Videl work so well together in the leading rolls. It's proof of concept that an entire story arc could have been written around them, and that Toriyama's inability to figure out what to do with them, instead bringing Goku back, has more to do with his own personal shortcomings and hang-ups.
In rewatching the Videl vs Spopovitch fight with my gf, she never once thought that the fight was unnecessarily brutal or violent in a way that the show has never done before - if anything, she was just constantly annoyed that Videl didn’t concede in all the opportunities she had. Just wanted to give my recent insight into it lol
Videl in that fight really was even more stubborn than Goku usually is. Like Goku was ready to give up after being trapped in Jacky Shun's ultimate technique.
I was wondering if a shout-out to TFS was coming. The bit was so far at the end I was afraid you wouldn't mention it (also as it's dub and not Japanese). But yeah, #justiceforTeamFourStar
@@gloriousdio8681 TFS recorded the voices for that Cell Games video shown before the start of the tournament, in the recordings for funimations release of Kai. But very late on Funi decided to pull it and released it with something recorded in house. The TFS version can be found on yt
@@gloriousdio8681 For the Dragon Ball Z Kai Final Chapters dub Funimation got Team Four Star to voice the actors in the video, but Toei found out about it and forced them to not use the Team Four Star voices because Toei hates them, so at the 11th hour it was swapped out for reused audio from the Dragon Ball Z dub of the scene.
Can someone explain the "Justice for team 4star" at the end? I have never watched any of the dubs so I don't know what he is refering or witch dubs he is talking about. (I know team 4star and their work)
Apparently, Funi wanted to bring on some of the TFS gang to do that Cell Games play in the Kai redub, to do their DBZA voices, and probably through in a few of their jokes as lines, but Toei put a stop to that
Funimation brought Team Four start to dub that scene, but Toei hating everything that remotely relates to videos related with their tv shows did not let funimation use the team four star dub of it. I think can find the dub on youtube.
13:03 I dunno, the way the anime did it is kinda better? In stories you shouldn't drop important information when it's the most convenient, you are encouraged to foreshadow it, or set it up. The manga version is like if Chekov said the gun is on the wall the moment it fires.
Well, I agree with the general sentiment. I just don't agree that's what's happening here. It isn't being set up for later. It's still being established right at the moment it's used... it's just being used for something pointless.
Funny that you drop a Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior reference since Akira Toriyama is the character designer for the series. Hence why the Hero from Dragon Quest VIII looks like Goku, Jessica looks like Bulma with orange hair, and Angelo looks like Trunks and why Psyche up to 100 looks like Super Saiyan purple. Speaking of the dub, they had the advantage of dubbing the early parts of the original Dragon Ball at the same time they were dubbing the Buu arc, so Eric Vale can be the tournament announcer consistently. It's like how Studiopolis was dubbing the original Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon Crystal at the same time, hence why they use the same voice actors for both instead of recasting almost everybody like the Japanese version. Though Ox-King in the DB dub is voiced by Kyle Hebert which sounds like a scratchier version of the Mark Britten voice, yet the Z Buu arc voice still sounds like Mark Britten (unless you pick up the "orange brick" or Blu-Ray releases where the voice has been re-dubbed). It's going to be awhile before you get to it, but the dub refers to the Dai Kaiohshin as "Daikaioh," where the actual "Dai Kaioh" is called "Grand Kai." Toonami was also airing the first two arcs of Dragon Ball at the same time as the early Buu arc, so when the announcer references the tournament where little Goku made it all the way to the finals, fans could say "I remember that" because they had seen it on several re-runs by then.
One thing Dragon Ball did better than Z was story telling and character growth. There was significantly more story involved with Dragon Ball. To be fair Dragon Ball Z did have it's moments, although I am not sure how many of those moments are filler. And like this video talks about here, I recall "Hercule" knowing Popovic in some capacity, we are given very little context. Made me wish we had more stories about the other characters. I think Mr. Satan is an interesting character and I would like to know more about him and his history. When I was a kid, he came off as a big douche to me. As an adult it's a little easier to see a man who once thought he was the strongest on the planet having his world slowly collapse around him and challenge everything he knows. Thankfully Super kind of redeems him a little bit.
Dude I dreamed with you. You were a villain dressed with an old brown victorian style swit and eated the cakes someone else (who I don't remember) made for a party.
16:58 no. Nobody remembers who the champ beat in the first round. Come on. Only if it’s an upset people care. It makes perfect sense to me. I give the anime credit for adding it.
The announcer would. That's literally his job, to provide play-by-play and context for fights, especially if he's already talking about it. And if it's your aim as an author to push a character-centric motivation for a fight, it's a pretty big failure to never allude to it in any way.
@@MistareFusion but like you said they came up with the reasoning after and I think it works out perfectly. The announcer not mentioning that he fought the champ before in universe doesn’t seem egregious to me. The champ faces no names all the time. The fact that the announcer remembers him at all is enough. Charles Barkley covers the NBA and there are segments where he doesn’t know who a lot of players are.
I remember strongly disliking this part of the anime as a kid, but as an adult I think it's among the best the animated series has to offer. You get this brief "post-crisis" feel from the characters you don't get anywhere else. They're relaxed. They interact with each other out of want, rather than need. They actually have time to be...characters. Part of me wishes the entire arc was like this. Cheers!
"That’s their job." (to brutalize Videl?) I only just discovered that bit. That’s probably the darkest throwaway joke you’ve made in this entire review series. My opinion, anyway.
I place far more blame on Funimation for the TFS incident. They knew damn well how that would set Toei off and they gave TFS the go-ahead anyway. It was something that shouldn’t have happened in the first place. It’s still on UA-cam last I checked, though, so no harm no foul.
@@gloriousdio8681 The short version - the DBZ Kai redub included Team Four Star going full meme with the Mr. Satan promo reel before the tournament. They did not clear this with Toei Animation, which hates TFS with a passion and copyright strikes everything they do. Funi had to redub for the official release.
I loved that it that Gohan was training Videl and Goten. I always thought that in manga it was meant that Vegeta could die again while being dead and be gone forever, was because he had a temp body and was in the living world and that the anime screwed things up by stating that they can die again when in otherworld, but in time i thought more that it just was the temp body that they got what makes it that they could die again and be gone forever. With Mr Satan and the pr thing, it is more his own ego than him being sexist, plus either how the anime tries 2 show that Mr Satan is the good guy and Spopovitch a bad guy, because Mr Satan doesn't want 2 beat up a women and Spopovitch happily does so. But at same time Spopovitch doesn't beat Videl up because she is a woman, he would've done that with anyone, in anime it is even moreso because she is related 2 Mr Satan.
I think the early DBD episodes should be remade The early arcs were given quick summaries and the story wasnt analyzed as much as the later arc with over 15 parts of video dedicated to themes and analysis
I will stay as long as you do! Well at least when it comes to Dragon Ball content, that is. But, even after GT, I sure would love to see you cover Super (anime AND manga) and Dragon Ball Fan Stories (like AF, Multiverse, Absalon, Kakumei, New Hope, etc). I love Dragon Ball and love seeing it tore down. So, yea, you can count on my views lol
I didn't like Team4Stars rendition of the fake Cell fight. It was all self referencing, fun to those who watch the abridged series no doubt, but not for a random kid watching the show. I'm honestly glad that it was scrapped, but they should have asked them to re-do the scene with a script not made by them, that would have been a win-win instead of dropping it all together, but that's that
Would you ever consider doing a ranking of the anime versions. I know that this is mostly just to compare the differences between the manga and anime, discussing how the TV series may have improved aspects of the story, however the anime does make substantial changes which in some cases (such as the king piccolo saga and the great saiyaman episodes) make it the superior version. So I was just wondering if you would rank the arcs in the anime adaptation differently to the manga.
I may jumping ahead with this. But I'm interested to hear your take on this. After Goten and Trunks fuse into Gotenks, they head off to fight the fat buu. Manga: Gets his butt kicked in two seconds for comedic effect. Anime: Uses an entire episode runtime to show how the fight went. Pros: It shows the context of how Gotenks was beaten. Honestly, the fight doesn't look bad at all. Gotenks being all brused up and powerless as the military get themselves killed is interesting. Cons: It ruins Toriyama's intended joke. The scene of Gotenks witnessing buu kill the military kinda contradicts the silly nature of fighting he has with Super buu later on. Why would he play around when he's seen how terrifying buu is? I honestly don't care for Gotenks so I could go either way. But I am curious as to what your opinion is on this.
Well, there's actually nothing to wait for because I already gave my thoughts on this in Dragon Ball Dissection last year. So in some way, you could say your wish has been granted! ua-cam.com/video/N2Kp6A8j4GU/v-deo.html
It's likely to come up if only tangentially, as Evolution being so bad was the catalyst for all of the new Dragon Ball material since Battle of Gods. These videos usually go into relevant context, so even if we don't get an actual review of the film itself, I'd be shocked if it wasn't mentioned by name. Going into the background of the film would make an interesting video on its own, though. The whole thing was basically a scam.

Gotten hugging Goku in the beginning never bothered me one bit even after you explaining it. He hugged his dad he never knew for the first time and then he hugged him again when his dad is about to leave forever. It’s still only been a day and he’s probably all kinds of emotions.
Yeah, it honestly doesn't undercut him hugging Goku again when he had to leave.
???
The conversation Goten & Trunks have about Goku happens later in the same scene.
Them being actually "mad" at him isn't what I'm talking about.
I never got why TeamFourStar's lines for The Final Chapters were nixed. I mean, allegedly Toei didn't approve but by what standards exactly?
I think it was that Toei doesn’t like the idea of abridging their material but Funamation loved it but couldn’t include it cause Toei had final say. Which sucks but hey at least the clip exist online!
@@digitaltailsmon4096 Abridging what? It was just them lending their voices to a scene. They were no more than very welcomed extras.
Don’t Anime often parody each other? Gintama anybody?
There are a few filler moments in Dragonball that stand out to me, and I'm right there with Lance on the Videl training sequence. When the animation team decides to flesh out already established scenes that Toriyama just didn't have time for, it usually goes okay. It when they have to invent stuff completely original where they can be iffy. Drawing out fights/reactions-to-fights is another crime.
Maybe for the next part you should open at the very beginning with "On our road to GT" or something like that so as many people possible know you're going that route.
I can't stop imagining it being done in the show's narrator's voice,
"Last time, on Dragon Ball Z (dissection)!"
Pointless
Videl was NEVER in a life and dead situation like Gohan was, plus he was a little boy at the time where such situations occurred... I feel if we're looking at who got it so SO much worse, its definitely Gohan...
Well, she got killed by Buu. And, if you count filler, she also fought Broly.

THIS is top-tier head canon!
That's how I like to think of it too
But what does the Z mean? You can call them dragon team since they started collecting dragon balls, but why call them z anything?

@@AntonioCardenasT It's just "The Z-Team/Fighters" as in just the Z. There is no meaning. The Z is just there to be cool.

I see that pun even hidden in the abbreviation :D
Kai-super

I just checked and... oh, no, you're right! How I wish someone had noticed this two years ago. I'm so embarrassed!
It's amazing how much the anime version has taken over my vision for the series in a lot of cases. I swear the Spopovich satan connection was a thing in the manga too, and i say this having read the manga multiple times and owning it.
I started watching all your videos last week, your my new Favorite / most underrated dragon ball UA-camr 🤘🏾🤘🏾
Thank you so much!
It would've been a good idea for the anime to establish that the ability to kill someone already dead as a trait unique to Boo. That way the final battle could still carry dramatic weight without contradicting the afterlife rules already established.
Huh. That’s a good idea. Too bad they didn’t run with that in either the anime or the manga.
That's a really good idea I've not heard anyone pose before. I really wish they did that. Would make Buu more special too.
13:11 wow. Ouch. Krillin and Yamcha getting killed and never coming back works as tension to me.

Conceding is something that in only ever considered a bad thing except in that one instance.
Videl in that fight really was even more stubborn than Goku usually is.
Like Goku was ready to give up after being trapped in Jacky Shun's ultimate technique.
Goku had to be told to give up, but yeah...

I too was wondering if a TFS shoutout was coming . I knew they did some lines but I didn’t know they were cut at the last minute
Hello I watch DBD in a week the hole thing no joke I'm hyped
@@MistareFusion random question but have you ever read the Pokemon adventures manga if not I highly recommend it.

"His Coolness is Over 9000!"
So ready for GT!!
And then the Piccolo arcs were the same season as GT, right? I mostly missed out on that, probably out of disgust with GT skipping an arc...
I always considered Dabura in heaven as just him embracing who he really is. A sweet pea.
Cheers!
There’s such a long story about why the Kai TFS Cell Reenactment was scrapped lmao.
So excited for GT

I place far more blame on Funimation for the TFS incident. They knew damn well how that would set Toei off and they gave TFS the go-ahead anyway. It was something that shouldn’t have happened in the first place.
It’s still on UA-cam last I checked, though, so no harm no foul.
What exactly happend?
@@gloriousdio8681 The short version - the DBZ Kai redub included Team Four Star going full meme with the Mr. Satan promo reel before the tournament. One of many mistakes by Funimation.
I still like the "Earth's special forces" line that the english narrator calls them in one or a few episodes
Dragon Ball Z filler was so good when it adds to the main manga!
Hey I made the video! (Love Twigs).

Is Videl the character you most identify with?
I remember spending recess trying to create genki dama.
I think the early DBD episodes should be remade

I will stay as long as you do! Well at least when it comes to Dragon Ball content, that is. But, even after GT, I sure would love to see you cover Super (anime AND manga) and Dragon Ball Fan Stories (like AF, Multiverse, Absalon, Kakumei, New Hope, etc). Exciting stuff.
I feel called out trying to do a kamehameha. I definitely don't still try to do that in the privacy of my own home. Nope. Certainly not.
I didn't like Team4Stars rendition of the fake Cell fight. It was all self referencing, fun to those who watch the abridged series no doubt, but not for a random kid watching the show. I'm honestly glad that it was scrapped, but they should have asked them to re-do the scene with a script not made by them, that would have been a win-win instead of dropping it all together, but that's that
From what I recall most of it was picking fun at the dub itself (as well as a few memes), more so than it was referencing Abridged.

So I was just wondering if you would rank the arcs in the anime adaptation differently to the manga.
for dabra if u think about it lucifer is supposed to be a fallen angel. Him being sent to heaven is like a long awaited return to his true home.
I kinda like Dragon Warriors except for the obvious exclusion of Bulma who's not a warrior. Makes them sound pretty badass.
She used to fight in the beginning. Everyone did, even Chichi. Then irrelevamce happens.
Out of curiosity do you plan to also one day talk about the infamous Dragon Ball Evolution movie?
It's likely to come up if only tangentially, as Evolution being so bad was the catalyst for all of the new Dragon Ball material since Battle of Gods. These videos usually go into relevant context, so even if we don't get an actual review of the film itself, I'd be shocked if it wasn't mentioned by name.
Going into the background of the film would make an interesting video on its own, though. The whole thing was basically a scam.
