I recently bought the Tamron 70-300mm lens for my Nikon D7100 and have been completely blown away by the stabiliser. When focusing, the lens locks onto target with a satisfying clunk and becomes absolutely still - no shake whatsoever. A truly awesome zoom!

I have the Tamron 70-300 reviewed here (combined with Canon 60D) and I tell you it is brilliant. It proved itself at the Air Tattoo show here in England. Pin sharp images and recently I took it on holiday and I can tell it takes fantastic portraits. Incredible details and sharpness. You can actually see and feel when the VC kicks in, it just freezes the image in your view finder.
I must say you are doing a good job and thanks for your reviews it helps people like me to make up their mind.

Just purchased and recieved the Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4 - 4.6 Di VC USD (International Version / No warranty in States) from Amazon. Matt, I cannot begin to tell you, how spot on this lens is. Everything you showed in your video here, I did the same with mine. I could not get over how fast this lens is. Blown away! This video review helped me decide to purchase this lens! Thanks a lot and keep up the great work mate!!!

@seagullface Welcome! Both were tested on full frame. Really depends if you want the range of 300. At long end, both separate well,.ary 200mm of course the 2.8 if better

Just bought this lens this afternoon. planning to use if for nature photography, will stick on the crop sensor of a d3200 that should then give me a 105 - 450mm. Looking forward to seeing how it performs over the summer. I've heard nothing but great reviews for it.

The mm does not changed it's now cropped because of the sensor..
Gives the illusion you have a longer focal length.

Just got my Tamron 70-300 F4-5.6 with VC. Payed just under 300 for it, and it's a good thing I was sitting down when I first gave it a go. The VC is just AMAZING! I thought my eyes were acting up when it locked on to a single guitar string with 300mm. I triend to shake things up more and more, and it just kept it's ground and only shifted the view when I really moved the camera about. Thanks Matt for a great no-bull-review! True every word!

I have my Tamron 70-300 VC, for a couple of months or so. I've been MUCH satisfied by the way it perfoms. I was split between this lens and canon 55-250 IS II, but put off by the build quality of the later one. And so I decided to go for the tamron. The VC works really well, it help me in a lot of application, wildlife, church(low light, it keep you able to shoot at about 1/40 or 1/60 at 300mm), video, etc. The USD works really well, and it is SHARP. For the price, I'd say this is a bargain!

    Hello Matt,
I just bought the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 VC USM based on your review.
I did some test shots, and I'm "WOW!". The lens is incredibly sharp, and the VC was able to take a shot in overcast sky, at 300mm, f/32, 1/6s 100ISO with very good results. (Tests done on the Nikon D7000)
Thank you for your review and recommendation.

Just bought the Tamron 70-300mmVC on EBay. Getting the Nikon 55-200mmVRII for Christmas, so I will compare the two.
Update on above; The lens arrived today, the day after buying it usually takes several days longer. Absolutely marvellous! The VC really has its work cut out with me but it works fantastically. Light is fading fast here so it'll be even better in sunnier weather. The reach is fantastic. So glad I bought it.

Sorry, I too often open my big mouth defensively before thinking. I feel that the VC on the Tamron is better than the VR on Nikon. On Tamron, it really "grabs" the image and holds it steady. At 300mm, it is sharp. I love it. I haven't used the Nikon nearly as much because I've been having so much fun. The Nikon is good but I find especially with my shakes, that I have to give it a little more time to activate. It's a good bit lighter than the Tamron at 200mm but I think the Tamron is just that bit sharper at full zoom. I can't remember how much I paid on ebay for the Tamron but it wasn't much especially given how fantastic it is.

I have had this lens for a few months now and all I can say is that I am blown away, I will have to create a review for them because the value for money is just astounding. Ultra sharp and the VC is the best in the business. Tamron created this lens to be the best possible offering at the price point with no expenses spared so you get more than what you paid for in this instance.

@Barnyrubbleism thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on so many of my videos - and for your concern about my business! (Things are going great btw) Clearly you would prefer I list previous clients on the website, and use models in my reviews instead of objects. Unfortunately, I don't do that. Generally I don't do head to head lens comparisons when it would take up others time as well as my own.
I hope you don't mind I copy the same response onto all of your comments.

Especially considering how much more stable it is compared to my Nik70-200vr1. Matt: Had I not seen this video, I would have never got the Tam70-300VC(Nik), and I even got one for my Canon Gear. it's more like an 'all around lens' purpose. aperture goes wider than the 70-300 VC USD but still if you ask me which one, i'll go with 70-300 because it's the best focal length in most of my situation when i'm shooting motorsports.. 4 out of 5 for 28-300

Danny Diet sorry perhaps my english is awful. If you want to shoot less-moving object 28-300 is the answer, but if you're into sports photography, 70-300 offers pretty quick af speed, that's all i can say

    Hi, Matt, excellent as usual.
I wish I could say that I went through and exhaustive study before buying the 70-300, but I was visiting my local camera shop and there was a Tamron Rep there showing off the lenses. I was "talked into" buying it with the $125 rebate in place at the time, just before Christmas. I have been shooting it now for 3 months and I must say it is a superb piece of glass for a net $300 expenditure. I even use it in DX mode on my D600 for extra "reach" and the results, hand held, are phenomenal. Thanks for confirming my enthusiasm. I highly recommend this lens. I have compared the results to much more expensive tele lenses and I win...every time.

I bought the Tamron 70-300 almost a year ago and you are right the shots your able to achieve as a handheld are awesome. I took some shots of the moon one night and just by holding it no tripod the shots were great. Tamron had a 100 rebate on the lens so I picked it up. It's a great lens for the price. I would recommend it. Yes your not getting the nice F2.8 but if your also on a budget you won't be disappointed.

I bought mine two days ago, and can say that VC is quite nice (you can really see it compensating the movement, as you said on first video), lens is well built for the price range, it has huge lens hood, metal mount, and the only downside for me is 62mm filter thread ('cause i own 17-50mm f/2.8 which has 67mm)

Well Done Matt, interesting even 5.5 years after you produced this. My use gravitated to Nikon's 70-200 f/2.8 VRII away from the Tamron SP 70-300 f/4-5.6 VC. At first each got some use getting to the stage now where the Tamron has probably not been used for 6 months. The reason, despite being very fast focussing and friendly, I had grown to believe that the Tamron was great to 200 but from there became progressively more useless to 300 where it was not sharp at all (if it really could get there.) With the Nikon being very good (despite a little vignetting) throughout the range of about 100 to 200 it seemed that no second short telephoto lens was needed. After now seeing your video it occurs to me that my Tamron may simply have got itself out of condition needing some sort of fine adjustment. Will look into that.

Thanks for helping me decide on this lens, your two reviews really sold me and convinced me this was the lens for my budget, especially since it is very reasonably priced. I'm a Nikon fan boy myself, and would love to have nothing but those great lenses Nikon is famous for. I'm just a beginner using D3100 for a couple of years now, so far I have the kit lens 18-55, a fully manual Rokinon 85 mm 1.4 (very challenging lens), and now I'm about to add the Tamron. So thanks for your review.

Thanks a lot for this - interesting and helpful info. I'm looking to get the 70-300 VC. SO FAR I've found a significantly higher number of people who say the Tamron 70-300 VC has better image quality than the Nikon 70-300 VR. I've found the same with regards to the VC versus VR.

Thanks for the review, it was definitely a factor in my decision to pick up a 70-300 VC/USD to hold me over until I can grab the 70-200 f2.8 VC/USD and have the best of BOTH.. VC and Fast Aperture.

Currently I'm using my stock lens for my T2i, the 18-55mm EFS IS f/4.5-5.6 and I'm about to get this lens and I'm pretty excited. On a level of excitement how excited should I be?

Thanks for the Review! I recently purchased the Tamron 70-300 to be used mainly on my A6000, but found I like the results on my Canon 6D just as much! I seldom take photos above 150mm, however, I wanted a lens with a bit more reach when I am traveling.

Awesome review. Thanks, Matt. Very useful as I was wondering about Tamron 70-300 F/4-5.6 VC performance.

I know this sounds a bit left field, but would love a comparison of the Tamron 70-300mm DI VC versus Nikon 28-300mm. They both end up F5.6 at the 300mm end,
The Nikon is F4.8 at 70mm, not far from the Tamron F4 at 70mm. Its VR is probably not as good as the VC, but it does give you full 28mm F3.5 on FX camera. But in the 70-300mm range, they are quite similar.

Well Matt, you sold me on the 70-300, even though I was already pretty much sold on it. I recently purchased the Nikon 50-200mm VR and like it a lot on my D5100, but I find myself underwhelmed with the VR at 150-200mm. This 70-300 seems to blow it away with stabilizing images. While I haven't felt the lens, the Tamron 70-300 lens also looks of better build quality as well. The Nikon 50-200 VR looks and feels pretty cheaply built.
Thanks for the awesome and informative review. Keep it up!

Bought the 70-200 years ago and it has served me well since. Got the 70-300 about a year ago for the VC and was very impressed by the quality. It's not as sharp as my 200 and does not feature as nice bokeh but that VC in combination with the increased focal length just makes it a tad bit more versatile.

    Great video.
Is the 300mm lens quick enough for sport photography to your mind?

Hi, love the reviews! One thing though, could you do the same comparison, but put the 70-200 on a pentax body, I would love to compare the IS in both systems. I'd like to know how well the pentax performs at higher zooms.
    Thanks

Thanks for doing this video! I am looking at getting a Canon EOS Rebel SL2 bundle that has an 18-55 mm lens and a 70-300mm lens, both of them Tamron. I wanted a comparison between the Tamron 70-200 and 70-300 to know if I should buy a bundle without the 70-300 mm and get a 70-200 instead. I think I will be quite happy with the 70-300 mm. lens, so this answered my question. Thanks again.

I purchased this lens a few months ago, and love it most of the time.
I personally found that the lens is especially sharp at f/8, and having to shoot at f/5.6 @ 300mm on cloudy / in the shade makes the result look like you've compromised.
All in all, a wonderful budget long-ish lens with an excellent VR, but it can leave you wanting if you're shooting birds that love to be in the shade.
