Until a year ago, this was my workhorse at car races and airshows ! Love it although extensive use made it age poorly, the autofocus drive works pain painfully and sometimes it seems that the motors disconnects from the lens elements... Now it's retired as I switched to mirrorless fullframe.
Im still a bit unclear on which lens your trying to convey is better here, this Tamron 70-300 or the Canon 70-300? Im really interested in either lens just want to know which one is the overall better lens (sharpness/build quality etc.) Thanx Chris i love your videos btw
G'day Chris' Hope you don't mind me shortening your name. I must say, your vid about this lens is one of the nicest and clearest vids about a lens so far. I've been looking and looking around for good reviews about lens for my 7D and want to get some more glass for my bag of tricks. I'm no expert by all means and always take into count what a lot of people say about particular lens etc. You've sold me on getting this lens over the more pricy Canon model. Found one for sale from HK for only $395
Ahhh I cannot wait to get my hands on this lens. I plan on getting one for outdoor football games and indoor robotics competitions. Would you think this lens would be awkward on an entry level body due to it's weight?
I'm currently viewing all youtube reviews of this lens. I thought your presentation was excellent and appreciated the comprehensive "actual" shots taken at various settings. Much better than plain verbal comments on IQ. I found the constant music really distracting especially when you were demonstrating the noises the lens could make. I know it's a modern trend to have music in every video but I hate it. Dave
Had this lens, and returned to Canon 55-250 STM which is of similar quality, a lot cheaper, and LIGHTER, turned out that I never have it with me because of it's weight. Only worthwhile if you have a fullFrame body. Eventually I ended up also replacing all of them with Tamron 16-300 which is quiet acceptable and adds up as an all-in-one.
Hi Christopher, i love your reviews. Very Professionally done. I have the option of getting the Tamron 70-200 F2.8 non vc and the Tamron 70-300 VC USD. Price wise, the 70-300mm is about half priced off the 70-200 f2.8 non VC I shoot handheld most of the time and prefer portraits, so bokeh is a concern. Which would you recommend?
Given a rock and a hard place, i only get one chance to get either one. Which would be it? I never owned a 70-200 f2.8 before and Tamron's version (without VC) is really affordable now The 70-300VC is cheaper though
If u can can wait & raise money then Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 VC USD is an amazing lens. Its having neck to neck competition with Canon's mighty 70-200 f/2.8 IS2.
pinkesh patel That is quite misleading... for the image you get for its price the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 VC is an awesome lens... but overall it is still miles away from the mighty Canon and Nikon 70-200 f 2.8 IS/VR . There is a reason why the pros still choose the Canon and Nikon f 2.8. Cheers ^_^
I'm a Canon and MFT (Olympus/Panasonic) user, I bought this lens to have a smaller option when "Canoning" and to replace my very good but heavy 24-105 f/4L and 300mm F/2.8 L. I also use my Canon EF lenses on my MFT cameras with an AF adapter with fantastic results but when Canon, the body+lenses+battery grip is close to 6kg, too heavy to carry all day long. I bought this Tamron and his little brother 17-50mm 2.8 and it reduced the weight nearly by 2. The picture qualities of both lenses are not as good as the L but still great and the confort of use is amazing. VC on Tamron out performs the Canon IS, but my L are MKI, may be better on MKII but the Tamron is perfect, especially compared to the Sigma OS that's just OK. On top of that, the Tamron is a 140-600 on MFT, what's great. It's sad to say but I let my L lenses sleep in my bag and use exclusively the Tamron as the ratio quality-versatility-portability is really excellent even compare to L lenses and for a fraction of the cost.
I own this lens for a couple of month and i agree with your testings espcially on apsc. Less chromatic aperations and a nice sharpness. But on my 35mm film camera i got a heavy vignetting at 300mm and f5.6. But overall it´s my every-day carry. Thanks for your (half-scientistic) video!!
Hi Chris, thank you for your high quality reviews. A have only one minor remark regarding maximum aperture of the Tamron 70-300 at 200 mm. According to my experience it is actually f/5.0 (and not f/5.6 as stated in the review).
Thank you Christopher for your good and clear reviews. Please leave a review on tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 VC USD (new). It's may help many beginners to improve their photography and to choose affordable lens...
Hello, I have the "Canon EF-S 55-250mm F/4-5.6 IS II" and I just purchased the " Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 SP Di VC USD XLD" I'm not a pro photographer, I mainly enjoy taking photos of wildlife, I was watching your other video where you were reviewing the canon 70-300mm I believe it was and at the end you suggested that the tamron was best for wildlife being that it was shaper at 300mm, anyways I'm trying to figure out if there are any major differences between my canon 55-250mm from the tamron 70-300mm besides that the tamron shoots 50mm More then the canon I have. I feel like they both are quite sharp and I can't really tell the difference, so if anyone can help me figure out if it's worth keeping the tamron since it seems similar to my canon 55-250mm or should I return the tamron save my money for another lends that does somthing noticeably different like the canon 100 macro. Please help! Thank you:)
hmm well now i really don't know which one i'd like to pick :( your reviews do help ^^ but now i am so confused with which one i like better i just don't know which one i will get.
Hi Christopher. I really enjoy your reviews a lot. Your landscape photos are amazing too! What do you recommend between this Tamron 70-300 f4 Di VC USD, The Canon 55-250 IS STM, and the Canon 70-210 f3.5-4.5 USM (Discontinued)? Any chance you could do a "My Gear" video? I would really love to see what lenses you own and use the most.
Chris... what do you prefer... ? This Tamron 70-300mm, or the newly reviewed Canon 55-250mm EF-S STM, for buying my first actual zoom lens? I guess with this Tamron on APS-C sensor cameras like mine, you get the extra focal length? What's the best overall, do you think?
+Christopher Frost Photography Chris, I would like know which lens in your opinion has the best image quality? Canon 55-250mm EF-S STM or this Tamron 70-300
Christopher Frost Photography very nice review sir..which do you think is better the 55-300mm nikon vrII or this Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 VC USD cant decide between them for my nikon d5100 zoom lense..
+Christopher Frost Photography , your videos are awesome! I have a Canon 750D and will be doing mostly wildlife photography in Africa. what telescopic lens would you recommend ? more or less same price range as this Tamron. Thanks
well I ended up buying the ef-s 55-250mm is stm, went to a local store and had the oportunity to try both. My reasons were: - I don't really need the extra 50mm at the end (doesn't seem that significant). - 70mm it's just a little bit too long to start out IMO. - It's double the weight, you really do feel it. - It compliments well my 18-55 is stm (I may be picking up the 10-18 next). - I don't really see myself going for full frame at all so the 70-300 seems to have more downsides for me. Althought if you think you may upgrade later on, you can still use the 70-300, you're out of luck with the 55-250. Hope this helped somehow.
Ah forgot to say that the focusing system of the 55-250 was considerably better than the 70-300, at least on my 700D/T5i. The 70-300 would hunt quite a bit.
Hi Christopher, Thank you for reviewing this lens. You've done an awesome job. Based partly on your review, I decided to get this lens for my Nikon D7200. However, unfortunately I'm a little disappointed with the image quality. I would like to know if the zoom in on your test stills in this video is to 100 procent or more? When viewing my images in 200 per cent (2:1) in Lightroom, they are not that sharp. Images taken with my 18-140 3.5-5.6 VR DX lens seem sharper and more punchy. Thank you and good job.
nicolaidenmark I zoom in a little bit past 100% for these pictures. The D7200 is a 24mp camera, whereas the Canon 60D used in this video is only 18mp, so that's probably the issue - your camera's sensor is more demanding.
Hi Christ just found your channel. I was watching your review of the Canon 70-300 IS USM and you recommended this Tamron lens instead at 300mm. As a lot of my photography is wildlife photography (mostly birds aerial shots) im usually shooting at 300mm. Do you think this lense is better for the job than the canon? There doesnt seem to be much in them in the second hand market price wise. The canon issue with shooting against the light concerns me also.
I had one on my Sony A580, so when I upgraded to a Canon 5D mk2 I bought another. However the 5D is full frame and there's a problem. It's very soft around the edges at 300mm, even at F11 on the tripod! The reason is simple, full frame cameras looks at a greater surface area of the glass elements. A cropped sensor doesn't see these weak areas, so they're not an issue in the same way. Lesson - be careful when buying for full-frame... you may need to spend a lot to sort the problem.
Hi Christopher, Really like your reviews. I'm thinking of upgrading my canon 55-250mm. This tamron lens reach is really 112-480mm when used on a crop sensor like 700d, right?
Thanks for your outstanding work, Christopher! I wanted to ask you, what lens would you recommend between the Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 VC USD and the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM for a telephoto beginner with an APS-C camera?
Hi Chris, thanks again for another great review. I owned a Canon 200D Mark 2, and have been shooting with EF-S 55-250mm IS II, was impressed with the image quality. Now I come across a really nice used Tamron 70-300 as this video had reviewed. Do you think this Tamron is an upgrade to my Canon 55-250? Thanks for your advise in advance.
@@christopherfrost thank you so much for your reply. Greatly appreciate it! Will.check around for this lens. Meanwhile I will be picking up a EF 70-300mm F4-5.6L IS USM lens soon. As I have a plan to get myself another full frame body next year. Cheers! Keep up the good work and happy shooting ,😁
I sold my older canon 70-300 is lens and brought this, these are dirt cheap compared to the canon model and yet I think out perform them? Love your reviews - simply excellent.
What should I buy for a full frame? I like this Tammy.. I want a quick travel zoom lens...thats all. $500 max Sigma 70 - 300mm or maybe the Canon 55 - 250mm?
I have a Canon 7d, a Tamron 17-55, a canon 24-105 and a canon 50. I love all three. I have been debating about this lens or the canon. Also have thought about the 18-270. I am not a pro but an amateur who takes it seriously. Currently when I travel I take the 17-55 (for low light) and the 24-105 which is my most used lens. I would like something else to bring with me. Would the Tamron be the best bet?
Paul Oneil All kinds of reasons. It's smaller, cheaper, very slightly sharper, and has better build quality, and a slightly more practical focal range (in my opinion). Check out my review of the 55-250 STM for more info. Make sure you look up the STM version!

Hey Chris, love the review. I just ordered this Lens from B&H based on your Review and other notables. Since your review was based on a Canon 60D, which looked pretty good, how would this lens fare on a 6D? ( I whished you have reviewed this Lens on a 6D) I was going to wait for the Canon EF 70-300 IS II but they keep pushing the release date back. Do you think I should have waited?
Unfortunately I didn't have a 6D when I tested this lens! I bet it's quite good though. It might be worth waiting for the new 70-300. Or maybe something older will do...keep an eye on my channel for the next couple of days...
Very nice review. But apart from the major differences like VC and Fast Focusing, does this lens contain the same optic as like Tamron Objectif AF 70-300mm F/4-5,6 Di LD IF Macro 1/2 Nikon??? Can you explain any difference? if any? Thankyou.
Your videos are excellent! I have a Nikon D3300 and looking for a reasonably priced telephoto lens for wildlife photography. Do you think this one would be a wise choice for the money? Or is there another you might prefer?
Chris, in the video you mentioned that other zoomlenses are better for macrophotography because of a closer focus distance than this one. Could you explain which one? Eventually the Tamron 16-300 or 18-400?
henry koll no no no. If you really feel you can only carry one lens and you don’t mind fuzzy photos then get the 18-400. Or use your phone. If you are interested in pin sharp quality photography. Then get this. And get a quality 18-70. And if you want quality macro shots get a macro lens. Do some research and see what you can find secondhand
SingleTrack66 thank you for your kind response. I have a macro lens already, but I am looking for an excellent macro zoom lens, which gives me more flexibility in the field. Can you recommend one?

It could be a slight fault in the lens, but even if it is, Tamron should take better care on quality control.
nice 50mm f1.8 red ring lens.. LOL
Hi Chris. I wish you review the tamron 70-200 2.8 VC.
really great!! hey Christopher i have nikon d750 full frame body Can i use for my camera Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 VC USD lens
+Sk. Art. film's Yes, if you get the Nikon version
Thx Chirstopher Frost Photography
Until a year ago, this was my workhorse at car races and airshows ! Love it although extensive use made it age poorly, the autofocus drive works pain painfully and sometimes it seems that the motors disconnects from the lens elements...
Now it's retired as I switched to mirrorless fullframe.
Im still a bit unclear on which lens your trying to convey is better here, this Tamron 70-300 or the Canon 70-300?
Im really interested in either lens just want to know which one is the overall better lens (sharpness/build quality etc.)
Thanx Chris i love your videos btw
+guitarist6494 I prefer the Tamron (VC USD version of course)
Ah ok. I heard you mention in the video it has better build quality, but do you think its sharper and better at low-light ?
Thanx for the response
+guitarist6494 It has the same aperture so there's no difference in low-light work
+guitarist6494 He's speaking on the video topic, the Tamron 70-300 VC as a better quality overall lens...
Appreciate, if you could do a new review for this lens
G'day Chris' Hope you don't mind me shortening your name. I must say, your vid about this lens is one of the nicest and clearest vids about a lens so far. I've been looking and looking around for good reviews about lens for my 7D and want to get some more glass for my bag of tricks. I'm no expert by all means and always take into count what a lot of people say about particular lens etc. You've sold me on getting this lens over the more pricy Canon model. Found one for sale from HK for only $395
Really nice review. Well done. Interesting lens!
Thank you , as always an excellent and comprehensive review.
Hi Christopher, i love your reviews. Very Professionally done.
I have the option of getting the Tamron 70-200 F2.8 non vc and the Tamron 70-300 VC USD.
Price wise, the 70-300mm is about half priced off the 70-200 f2.8 non VC
I shoot handheld most of the time and prefer portraits, so bokeh is a concern.
Which would you recommend?
The VC version is miles better. I would never buy the non-VC version
Given a rock and a hard place, i only get one chance to get either one.
Which would be it? I never owned a 70-200 f2.8 before and Tamron's version (without VC) is really affordable now
The 70-300VC is cheaper though
bigrockseany Personally I cannot imagine using 70-200 without VC...
Excellent review as always. Thank you so much.
Fantastic review, thanks, you've helped me make up my mind.
Thank you:)
hmm well now i really don't know which one i'd like to pick :(
your reviews do help ^^ but now i am so confused with which one i like better i just don't know which one i will get.
Elean Mendoza If you have an APS-C camera, then the Canon 55-250 STM
If you could get a hold of one, I'd really like you to review a tamron 70-200 DI VC. PS, Love your videos!
Can i use a filter if i can which mm .
Chris... what do you prefer... ? This Tamron 70-300mm, or the newly reviewed Canon 55-250mm EF-S STM, for buying my first actual zoom lens? I guess with this Tamron on APS-C sensor cameras like mine, you get the extra focal length? What's the best overall, do you think?
Tom Davis I prefer the 55-250 STM for its lovely build quality :-)
+Christopher Frost Photography thank you Chris. Love ur vids
+Christopher Frost Photography Chris, I would like know which lens in your opinion has the best image quality? Canon 55-250mm EF-S STM or this Tamron 70-300
Christopher Frost Photography very nice review sir..which do you think is better the 55-300mm nikon vrII or this Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 VC USD cant decide between them for my nikon d5100 zoom lense..
can you do one on the tamron 70-200 f2.8????
+Christopher Frost Photography , your videos are awesome! I have a Canon 750D and will be doing mostly wildlife photography in Africa. what telescopic lens would you recommend ? more or less same price range as this Tamron. Thanks
+Laurie Korsten Take a look at my best telephoto zooom lens for APS-C video
Nice review,,, is this compatible and no problem with canon 3000d?
Great reviews! Do you have any direct comparison between this Tamron lens and the Canon 55-250mm IS STM?
I would also be interested in this.
I agree. A comparison review of these two would be great.
well I ended up buying the ef-s 55-250mm is stm, went to a local store and had the oportunity to try both. My reasons were:
- I don't really need the extra 50mm at the end (doesn't seem that significant).
Ricardo Cunha TY Ricardo! I'll go try both of them one of these days also. I think I'll go for the 55-250mm stm.
Ah forgot to say that the focusing system of the 55-250 was considerably better than the 70-300, at least on my 700D/T5i. The 70-300 would hunt quite a bit.
Hi Christopher,
Thank you for reviewing this lens.
+Cpt Greenbeard I'd personally much prefer the Tamron lens
Very cool lense! This lense - my dream! I remember my old Tamron 70-300, he is terrible. This Tamron much better than my ex Tamron, absltly! 😊👍
Nice review! What is better? Canon 55-250 stm or Tamron?
Hi Chris, have you also tested the a bit newer version A030, I am curious whether there is any difference
Amazing review and samples. I am going to buy it for my Canon 600D. Thank you!
I know this comment is 5 years old, but how did it work on canon 600d? I have that same camera and i might buy this lens.
I've made a video about that very question :-) look for my 'Best Telephoto Zoom Lens for APS-C' video
Nah, don't bother. If anything you should consider upgrading to the STM version of the 55-250 lens, it's even sharper
Selling my L lenses now too. Atm this tamron half price to 260 brand new everywhere I saw are around 400 not sure how much you for hours for
What should I buy for a full frame? I like this Tammy..
I want a quick travel zoom lens...thats all. $500 max
Sigma 70 - 300mm or maybe the Canon 55 - 250mm?
+Levi Bodo The Canon 55-250 is not for full frame. I'd recommend this Tamron 70-300 VC lens, really
Great review, the more i see of this lense the more i want it.
What are your thoughts on combining this with the Nikon 18-105mm and 35 1.8g in my kit?
I have a Canon 7d, a Tamron 17-55, a canon 24-105 and a canon 50. I love all three. I have been debating about this lens or the canon. Also have thought about the 18-270. I am not a pro but an amateur who takes it seriously. Currently when I travel I take the 17-55 (for low light) and the 24-105 which is my most used lens. I would like something else to bring with me. Would the Tamron be the best bet?
If you need a telephoto lens for your APS-C camera, get the Canon 55-250mm IS STM
Christopher Frost Photography Curious why you suggest that one over the tamron 70-300. which has the better image quality?
Paul Oneil
All kinds of reasons. It's smaller, cheaper, very slightly sharper, and has better build quality, and a slightly more practical focal range (in my opinion). Check out my review of the 55-250 STM for more info. Make sure you look up the STM version!
Hi Chris, nice review. may i know what kind of Canon model do you use at the early minutes?
because it doesn't look like 60D at all
I was using the 60D to film that footage. The camera you see is an old 400D, I think, that I used just to get that shot
Great Review as always. I believe this is the "SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD" lense with the Di in it ?
Yes, I think there should be a Di. So long as the 'VC USD' is there then you're looking at the right one.
Purchased for around 2600 pounds here in India. Courtesy your brilliant reviews which speaks volumes about your passion for photography, I've managed to collect some quite good photography gear making it a joy to use.
very nice video friend. which one will be better this tamron one or the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR? tks a lot.
The only negative with this lens is that it has no weather sealing, other than that it is a truly great lens, i love it !
Oh by the way I have a canon 6d and am looking to get into weddings in the future. Not sure if that help lol
Very nice review. But apart from the major differences like VC and Fast Focusing, does this lens contain the same optic as like Tamron Objectif AF 70-300mm F/4-5,6 Di LD IF Macro 1/2 Nikon??? Can you explain any difference? if any? Thankyou.
Hi Christopher ! Can i use this lens with the Nikon d3200 DSLR ? Thanks for the help!
Your videos are excellent! I have a Nikon D3300 and looking for a reasonably priced telephoto lens for wildlife photography. Do you think this one would be a wise choice for the money? Or is there another you might prefer?
+Steve “AlwaysFishin” McC This would be a good lens for that :-)
Chris, in the video you mentioned that other zoomlenses are better for macrophotography because of a closer focus distance than this one.
If you're happy to go cheap, then the old Sigma 70-300 Macro is a good option
Hi Chris, is there a vigneting if you use it on a full frame camera? Thanks
Please make a review with canon’s 70-300 EF f4-5.6 IS II and the Tamron 70-300 f4-5.6 VC USD Lens. Any time I want to buy a lens I always check your reviews.
What a great review, thank you!
Hello Christopher, I bought a Canon M50, and im considering to buy this lens with adapter. But im not really sure if it will work with my camera.
Hi Chris, have you tried the Tamron 70-200 vc usd? Is there any significant sharpness in image quality compared to 70-300 version?
Great review!
I wish you had the comparison with a full frame camera (as in the Canon EF 70-300 review), but still, very nice.
Thanks :)
This is one lens that slipped through my full frame net! I tested it before I had a Canon 6D to test on
do you have any review of this lens with your 6d?? i would like to see the performance of this lens on full frame camera... thank you
Great Review man, thumbs up! :)
