The Tamron 70-200 f2.8G is priced at $1,299 which is $1,500 less than the NEW Nikon 70-200 f2.8E lens. What everyone wants to know, is the Tamron a better buy or is the Nikon miles better? That's what I try to find out in this Real World Review!
I used the Nikon D500 and Nikon D5 DSLR Cameras for this shoot. We filmed the footage in the field with the Canon XC-10 and at the loft Nikon D750.

Boy am I ever late putting a comment on this video! I have watched Jarod’s comparison a few times over the last year while trying to decide between the Tamron & Nikon 70-200. I use a Nikon D500 and already am very familiar with Tamron having owned their G1 24-70 f/2.8 plus the Tamron 150-600 f/5-6.3 USD VC Di G2 so I am very aware of their build quality and quality glass. I was just going to buy the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 G2 when an extremely mint condition Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 E Fl Ed Vr used lens was brought to my attention. The owner was switching to a Sony Mirrorless camera so was selling his Nikon f mount lenses off. This is such a gift for those of us still shooting DSLR’s right now as we get great lenses at wonderful prices every time somebody goes mirrorless. The price was only a couple of hundred more than the Tamron. The Nikon came with everything from the factory and appeared as though it came off a retailer’s shelf. I tested the Nikon and it tested like new with no front or back focusing etc and was truly amazing on the D500. Too good to pass up. The Tamron would have obviously worked for me but I felt that down the road the resale on the Nikon would be better plus I agree with Jarod that Nikon build quality is a known quality.
I have had this Nikon 70-200 for a few months now and it is fast, quiet, extremely sharp from 70-200 even in the corners. The build quality is #1. The VR is likely no better than the Tamron as Tamron really has quality vibration reduction. If the Nikon hadn’t appeared I likely would be a very happy Tamron 70-200 owner right now as I am extremely pleased with my other Tamron lenses. One more thing is that I use a Nikon 1.7 teleconverter with the 70-200 which gives me a f/4.8 with 510mm of reach for wildlife. Still focuses quickly, tracks great and is still very sharp on my D500. This comes in handy in lower light when the 150-600 struggles at f/6.3. I am quite pleased overall with my lens choices with Nikon and Tamron.

With my back and shoulder issues, the D3s & D4s got to be too much for me to carry at all day events, baseball, football, hockey, airshows, etc. So I started shooting with my old trusty D700 again for this work. Really wish Nikon would release a true replacement for the D700 aka D5 without integrated grip. My product, macro and portrait work I do with my D810.
I owned the Nikon 70-200mm VR-I and used the VR-II. I left my VR-I on top of my truck and drove off... heard it roll off and crash. I was so pissed! Ordered a 70-200 VR-II to replace my VR-I, but had a job the same day so my photoshop owner lent me a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 OS to use for a few days while the Nikon was on order.
To make a long story short, I was so impressed with the Sigma, I bought one instead of the Nikon VR-II and put the savings into a new set of mono-lights.
Sigma and Tamron's 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms are really there with Nikon's now, and in my opinion the Sigma macro and Art Lenses are better in most regards. And just a few years ago, I would have never believed anyone saying anything so absurd, and I always had nothing but Nikon glass.

Mee2. We bought the D500 for my wife and I gave her my original Sigma 150-500 and with those two tools she is getting great bird/action shots. I went with the D750 for the resolution and the fact that the D300 hadn't been replaced yet. We D300 users had been waiting for ages for a good replacement APSC model.
How this lens preform on a crop sensor camera? I have a 70D, thinking about get this lens. Would you recommend it?
Jared Polin I have a Nikon d700 with the mb-d10 grip, the 1990s era 70-210 f5.6 zoom, and a 28mm ai from the 1980s. Should I get a used 70-210 f2.8 Nikon vr1, save up for the non af-s 80-200 f2.8, save up even more for the 300mm f4 pf Nikkor prime, or save up for this lens?

As a serious hobby photographer, I think the Tamron is the clear winner for me. I know I will keep dreaming about premium Nikon glass, but I am not making money off of my photos. Thanks for the great review.

About That Image what about used? Seen a few under $500

As a semi-serious hobbyist, this lens is exactly what I want: indistinguishable from professional quality images at less than half the cost. If I didn't already have the older Nikon 70-200 VR II, I would have this lens on my list. I do already have the Tamron 24-70 and love it.

Excellent review. One thing I have to add is that the Tamron comes with a 6 year warranty, so if it does not last, at least you have that.

I am pretty sure that only covers a few selective parts, which probably are the parts that don't often fail. Like Nikon offers 1 year Full and 4 years partial, but I'm not sure. Honestly the best way to go is to buy name brand or first party I like to call it. Buying Nikon for Nikon or Sony for Sony, etc. Also it is much more important to insure your camera gear as it is more likely that you will break or lose your gear than it will fail during the warranty period. Personals or portables insurance covers theft, accidental breakage and more. It is not very expensive and is offered from most major home or auto insurance companies.
@@patricksmith2553 Tamron's 6 year warranty is full coverage, not partial... atleast here in the US. you can look it up online.

Aight I know this is 5 years ago but that "walk up to the net and look like you belong" definitely helped when I went to a concert a few days ago and did the "look like you belong" thingy. It got me up the stage and got a good spot to shoot. The crew and other VIPs didnt even give a fck while I was up there shooting. 🤣
And btw, definitely getting that G2 early next year. It performs way above its price.
For the build quality question: Just remember that you could buy 2 of the Tamron's for the price of the Nikon, so the nikon has to be able to last twice as long to make financial sense. I'm a nikon shooter and currently use a Nikkor 80-200 2.8 af-s which is on it's last legs for the af-s motor. I had planned to get it service but apparently nikon doesn't make the parts for it anymore, so this tamron is on the short list. I can't really justify paying twice as much for an at best marginally better lens. With that extra money, I could buy a 200-500mm nikon also!
Pulled the trigger on the tamron 70-200, should be here tomorrow and hopefully it lives up to expectations.

Long video, but totally worth to watch till the end.I have the G2 on a D750, sharpness is fantastic. Took it to Andorra mountains for a test. From the top of the mountain I could shoot a group of 4 snow scooters in the valley, and still see their outfits and colors when pixel peeping. I agree the focus ring is not 100% smooth, but Nikon is 3179€ in Belgium vs 1600€ for the Tamron G2, so the choice was obvious.
Great review Jared, one of the best you've done I think. You covered all the information I wanted to know about the Tamron, and it was nice to see it actually being used outside of a studio. Really enjoyed the comparison shots too (amazing work getting them so similar).
After two copies of the Tamron, first had very noisy ratcheting VC and second copy had major front focus issue that even plus 20 could not rectify as well as AF acquisition. Even sent it in to Tamron...they said nothing wrong with lens. I ponied up to the Nikon and have absolutely NO regrets. No AF fine tune what so ever , freakingly fast and accurate focusing and superb and accurate color rendition. This lens will last my lifetime. By the way, great review Jared
I bought the Tamron 70-200 USD DI SP a couple of years ago and am really happy with the lens. About 12 months ago I dropped it after which it appears that the mount was slightly out of shape because it was hard to mount. It also made a rattling noise when shaken but the images have not been affected. Over time it has returned to normal as far as mounting goes but there is still a bit of a rattle when shaken. The images remain unchanged. Love the lens.

Thank you for giving such reviews which I found to be unbiased and honest. It's very interesting to watch your videos.. Excellent review. I'm a serious photographer, but not full time, so the Tamron was the choice, and along with my D750, it is a beauty to have, what a fabulous lens. Personally, the 6 year warranty, the build, and the quality of photos is worth the purchase, so happy I purchased. This review just re-confirms my desicion.

Yes, Yes, Yes, the Nikon 70-200mm 2.8E might be slightly better in the one or other area. But this delta is in my opinion not worth 1500 USD more. Not at all. Better to buy the Tamron and buy for the 1500 USD another good lens or even a 2nd camera. Or spend it in Spa :) Btw: I took the new Tamron on my recent trip to northwest part of China where it's currently still cold and very, very dusty. No issues at all with this lens. Also back in Shanghai no problem with this lens when using it on some rainy days outside. Seems to be the build quality is superb, Tamron did in my opinion here an excellent job, this new SP line gives you really a big bang for the buck.
Nice shots as always, Jared, but editing on the video is GREAT. GG Todd, I assume, and whoever else does it! I don't really care about the results from the tests, no one is putting out bad lenses any more, I'd buy the Tamron without any reviews.

I have had the Tamron 70-200 2.8 G1 for the past 5 years - went through all tough situations of a wedding and portrait photographer with it. Even the G1 version is tack sharp, has great VC and quick AF. Still holding strong and looking good with no issue at all, have been using it on D600 and D850. I just upgraded to a new G2 at an insane 950€ (due to a local retailer discount ). Can not congratulate Tamron enough for this lense.
Pretty sure someone already said this but the "zoom" difference at 200mm is the focus breathing. The nikon VR2 had the same problem. You (Jared) noticed it as well on the video when you compared the D5 vs the 1DX, and shoot a singer's face with both. Tony Northrup noticed that the Sigma, Tamron and Nikon VR2 had this problem unlike the Canon. This new Nikon 70-200 solved the problem, at a higher price though.

for information : Tamron has reduced the mod (minimal object distance) from 1.3m (50.7 in) in our older 104A025N to 0.95m (37.4 in), allowing a maximum magnification ratio of 1: 6.1
Just bought the slightly older version without the VC since my camera has internal stabilization. For around $600 US you can NOT go wrong with this lens. Just starting to use it and already really digging it.
One of the best comparison videos I've seen while spending my last week on UA-cam watching camera/lens reviews/comparisons. At first I was a bit worried by the length of the video but you gave so many details and kept it "breathing", time was flying by when I watched through the whole thing. And I like your style of making videos!
Btw Jared, try shooting the Tamron with the tripod color down, resting on your hand. That solved the issue of focus ring drifting for me.

Thank you so very much for this comparison. I am moving up from my Nikon d90 with my Nikon 70-300 5.6 to a Nikon d750 and the 70-200 2.8 but wasn’t sure which to purchase. Now I know I can go with the Tamron since I am not a professional. I mainly shoot high school sports as a hobbyist and to capture those moments for my son and his teammates :)

I love the review. I would go for the Tamron. My Nikon D 7100 would work really well with it. I do have the 16-300 mm Tamron and I feel its an all around lens. I am not a pro so most of my lens are used. For me it is great for the budget.
I've been sold on Tamron, since I bought my first Tamron lens 5 years ago. Great performer & easy on the wallet. I really think they hold their own against Nikon & Canon. Great review, Jared! 👍

D7200 user here. i got my copy 2 weeks ago. it got a bit of back focusing issue but was able to fix it using AF fine tune in the camera. Test ur copy thoroughly, otherwise its a lovely lens!
7200 user here as well... is it even better than an used nikon vrii 20-200? cuz they cost pretty much the same
Melanie M. Leay Rettally Do you mean the Nikon 18-200 VRII? There really isn't any comparison. Although the 18-200 does cover the range of this lens, it's much slower and less sharp than this lens so not good for sports as seen here, and not as good for portraits since it has a slower aperture and you can't blur backgrounds as well. The 18-200 is nice for general photography if you just want one convenient lens to walk around with, though.
People don't buy a 70-200 for long range sports like baseball. You could probably use some cheap kit 70-300 and get good results at those distances because at those distances you're not getting portrait quality. However, do a comparison of headshots or portraits - which is what the lens is mostly used for - and you'll see why the Nikon is more.
This is why I watch your most of the videos. Its so clear and comprehensible explanation with details. Thats what we all crave for. Fantastic video.

All round decent video with good detailed information. Was a little confused to start looking at the video as at one point I saw you using the D5 but with the info in the image processing showing D500 later on. Maybe as a suggestion, telling your audience exactly what equipment will be used on real world tests?

Nice review. I will get the Tamron. Didn't find it too heavy. Build-quality of the previous Tamron 70-200 was excellent and there is more weather seal on this G2. Besides, I can buy a second lens and still be cheaper than the Nikon.
One more comment regarding your review of the "build quality." Tamron gives you five extra years of warranty. Even as a working pro and heavy use, that is a huge difference.
Jamie Feldman I have the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 and I love it. I’ve been struggling over getting a used Nikkor II, but that’s about the same price as this new Tamron, and no warranty.
amazing jobs with taking pictures that are damn near the same with the 2 lens. If your a pro and your main lens is the 70-200, then go with the Nikon. If you are anyone else, looks like the Tamron might be the way to go.

I just got the G2 myself, and Jesus it's heavy. Can you share your workout routine and diet? I think I need to work out a bit if I want to keep using this lens.
The original Tamron 70-200 VC is heavier but its never bothered me that much personally in the majority of situations.
Shoot with the Sigma 200-500 f/2.8 for a month, and the G2 will be as light as a pocket camera lens. (I know I am not helping)
Try the 150-600 G2. Anyway, everyone, you do get used to them. I carry my Nikon D750 camera (full frame) with the battery grip, with the 600 G2 mounted on my tripod (Induro fiber), around on my shoulder and in my right hand, all day long.

I am considering trading the Nikon 80-200 for this becausevof the VR. I have noticed using the D500 with the grip the 80-200 was causing camera shake. I shot the 200-500 with hardly any camera shake.

I think this 70-200 from Tamron is a winner.
You can literally buy another Tamron if it breaks down for the price of the Nikon!
However, for me the Nikon is more compelling for the working distance when I want to shoot shy critters. I already own the VR2 so I'll def wait for a bit for th price to drop.
I don't know why it's so expensive in USA but in Asia/Hong Kong the 70-200 is $2200. Not $2800.
I think a real test would be to cover a sport in challenging light. Honestly, you can use most inexpensive glass to cover sports on a bright day.
Exactly. I've been scouring over reviews of the Tamron and Sigma 70-200 f2.8 lenses but find little mention or sample pics of people using them in light sports conditions. I have a son that plays hockey and my Canon 100-300 f4 is about useless indoors but shines in outdoor rinks and for soccer and baseball.
Yes ... I like to take photos at dog shows (most are in low lighting, indoor arenas) and have terrible trouble with noise. I have the Tamron version of this lens on a D7500.

How can you tell the difference between a lens that is "off" versus human error? I just picked up the 70-200 G2 based on the great reviews it received. However, none of the photos I have taken, a few portraits and a large number at softball games, appear sharp to me. Where I can, I have looked for the sharp portion of the photo versus where I thought I was focusing (I am using a Nikon D750). Clearly, in a number of photos, the sharp area on the ground (in the batter's box or around second base) is in front of and ends prior to the photo subject. I don't have this problem with the Sigma 150-600 but that may be a combination of focal length and aperture that gives me more room for error. The "problem" with the Tamron is driving me crazy because I don't know if it is the lens or the photographer. What I do know is that I am not happy with the sharpness when it comes to faces.
I tested Tamron vs Nikon vs Sigma 70-200's) in the mid nineties on a Nikon F5 (35mm film). In both Nikon and Sigma there was significant lens flare while almost nothing in Tamron. I was shooting people in backlit situations to get that special aura in their hair, outdoor portraits, and lit up from a flash fro the front. I then sold out of all my Sigmas as they really was a problem. I know there has been a lot of development since, but I still have several of my Tamrons from that time, and they still works great on DX Nikons, allthoug they do not perform as a modern lens, slower focus and no VR. But still no lensflare in backlit. And they are robust enough.
I have the Tamron 70-200 G2. Did anyone have problems with calibration. I have sent mine off to Tamron to have it calibrate to the Camera.

just got my tamron 70-200 g2 fro my canon 6d. couldn't be happier! I had 70-200 2.8 is ii canon, and to be honest no difference. an amazing lens.
The Tamron focus breathes at close range making it less than 200. Common problem with a 70-200 and many zooms in general. Film with the Tamron at 200mm moving the focus from infinity to closest and you'll see the framing change even though you didn't zoom out.
The problem here for still photography is when you want to do a close/tight headshot. When it focus breathes to less than 200mm, you don't get the 200mm background compression that many want. One might as well just get a 135mm lens with a wider aperture if this is what they want to use a 70-200 for.
However, if you want do photograph things far away, you'll get awesome bang for your buck. That's where the Tamron will shine.
The Emo Emu you actually see a clear focus breathing with the Tamron in many of these images at realistic distances. It clearly has less reach.

at 23:45 ish comparing the portrait shots, the difference is again in focus - the Tamron shot has the person's hair on his cheek in perfect focus, whereas the Nikon shot is focused further back, on his eye. I agree with your assessment overall, I think difference in the performance of the photographer will have a much greater effect on photos than which lens they're using in this instance!
Have had my Tamron 70-200 2.8 G2 for two months. A fantastic lens. No regrets.
I have the Tamron matched up to my 7D mkII. First test was at a mountain bike enduro race. Really pleased with the AF performance and the image quality. Second test was at a CrossFit competition. Again, it performed really well.
My only issues.
- I would prefer that the zoom/focus rings followed suit with the rest of the Canon lenses.
- I did find myself accidentally moving the VC switch a couple times.
Swing the tripod foot down so you can rest your right hand on it and you'll pretty much eliminate the issue of bumping the focus ring. Same trick works on the newer Nikon lens, but it doesn't feel quite as comfortable to me.
I have watched about ever comparison of the Tamron 70-200mm G2 against Nikons and Canon versions of the same focal length. And Jarod you did a wonderful job of a "Real World" review vs clinical numbers and focus breathing comparisons. I know the married couple reviewers (you know who) trashed the Tamron G2 for bokeh and Focus breathing. Yet when I see your pixel peeping the bokeh I don't see any issues in a "Real World" review. Angry camera dude helped me get over the focus breathing issue. For me the Tamron G2 won my money in the end. Thanks for doing this review, miss you shooting Nikon.

Hard to judge as in many cases the focus differs in the two images, which is why people do more controlled test. Take 23.54 for example, you would think the Nikon has the upper hand around the eye, but then you realise the Tamron shot has focus on the outer eye (can be clearly seen with the spot where the eyebrow ends and the cheekbone whiskers). Say what you want about brick wall test, but for a detail analysis such as on corner sharpness and pixels this is the way to go as it greatly reduces human error. A baseball game is a good way to test focusing real world through :)

I got myself a Tamron 24-70mm (A007) three years ago after watched another comparison video with the Canon one made by another youtuber. I thought, hmm, it's not as good as Canon but definitetely is not a bad one. Soon I realised the sharpness is not that good, and image quality at corners are very bad, I didn't use it much. It seems like the performance of this lens was not the same as in the video. It looks like this Tamron 70-200 G2 lens had a great improvement and I can't tell difference with Nikon one in terms of image quality. Thinking of getting this one, hope this time the lens performs as what I expect.
The focus of my Tamron 24-70mm is very accurate and fast, so I don't think there will be any problem in focusing with models after A007.
how will the tamron G2 focus perform on nikon D810 compare to on D500 ? will it be 80% as good as D500? i know that D500 have better focus.system

Got the Tamron G2 as well. Had it a week after it came out in March and use it all the time. Best bang for the buck I could have ever hoped for in a lens.
as a pro photographer using Nikon glas for years I must admit that Tamron has made me think... it started with the 24-70/28 G2 which gave me better results (also personal taste in colours and contrast) than the newest Nikon 24-70/2.8E. It might be personal but I think Tamron is on a very good way and their price politics are amazing. Thanks for the field test video which actually counts much more than any lab test!

I've had the G2 for a couple of weeks now and I haven't taken it off of my D750 yet
ron topp - I have it as well and LOVE IT. Versatile and takes great shots in so many situations. It and the Sigma F/1.4 85mm prime are the lenses I like to use the most - obviously for different things!
Did you calibrate your g2 lens..?? I own the 24-70 g2 which front focus so much..
Thanks for the review and comparison with the Nikon. I was saving up for the Nikon and pulled the trigger on this when it came out. Absolutely no regrets as a part time photographer.

Is image stabilisation necesarry for these lenses?

I want to upgrade to a D750 with Tamaron 70-200 G2 and a 24-70. But as a student, my budget is small and want to know the opportunities between these big price differences.
Jared, since you really can't tell a difference in sharpness with a 21MP sensor, would it make sense to do a quick followup using your new D850 taking other types of real world images?
he used the d500 which is a 1.5 crop factor camera, so the pixel density you get is the almost the same as in the d850 when croping its photos to that same ratio. We are basically seeing 1.5 croped images of what a 30mp full frame camera would get you. I think it is enough.
What i think it would be worth reveiwing from a ff camera is the sharpness in the corners of the frame, as a crop factor camera does not reach that areas so we missed that spot from the lenses. But again, theres nothing wrong with the megapixels.
I bought the 80-200 2.8 AF-D, I think you must do a review of this old lady! In my opinion, the best cost benefit in Nikon telephoto
