  • It's been a little while since I've covered a new Tamron lens, so here is their newest model, a flagship 70-200mm G2 (Generation 2) stabilized telephoto zoom. It's very expensive, for a third-party option - Tamron are giving it their all here, so let's see if they can impress.

    Your reviews should be the standard model for most of the rubbish we have to endure on the net: bloody wafflers, bad diction, never-get-to-the-damn-point morons, etc, etc, etc. You are a professional mate. We in Australia appreciate you. Thank you so much, and great review of my next lens too.

      Used 70-200 IS mark ii will run you about $1600 used... You can snag brand new Tamron 70-200 2.8 G2 for $1200... and it's JUST as good as the 2.8 IS mk ii

    First, I love your reviews, thank you for doing these! Perfect mix of technical stuff and realistic application stuff, and very easy to understand. I love your consistent format for these videos. I just wanted to share a horror story about this lens. I bought one in October and found that it was absolutely amazing with my 5Diii and 6D, the stabilization is what sold me over Canon's 2.8L IS ii, I found it WAY nicer to shoot hand held video over Canon's... About 6 months later I opened my bag to find the lens BENT, it was coming apart at a seam near the collar. I had never bumped or dropped the lens (inside or outside my camera bag), which I would have gladly accepted responsibility for if I had knowledge of such event, but in any case, I sent it to Tamron for repair. The repair cost $300 but when they returned the lens they kept my original rear cap and included an older model cap that didn't cover and protect the weather seal gasket (and it looked used!) and the lens was completely unable to focus on anything-- one member of a photography forum said it looked like an element was installed backward or upside down. when I called Tamron to have it handled they sent me a return shipping label to have it fixed again and requested that I sent my camera with the lens, but I wasn't about to trust them with my camera after they displayed such a lack of care with my lens. Another two weeks went by and I got the lens back, finally in working order, but still with their crusty old rear cap, and I swear the VC is louder now than it was before. I simply don't trust it now. I worry about it breaking again in my bag, and I worry about having to send it back to Tamron. I'm $1,600 into a lens that I don't trust now. Anyone reading this, if you can afford the Canon, just get it. I thought I was being clever with my budget but after paying Tamron for repairs and renting replacement lenses during this one's absence I'm now over the cost of a Canon but without the peace of mind that Canon gives you.

      I already have the first gen 24-70 VC from Tamron, but I want an upgrade in image quality for my new, higher resolution camera (going from 5D3 to 5D-sr). The VC on the old lens was fine down to 1/20th or so, if I went all Tom Clancy sniper-style on it. Build quality was a bit rickety.
      I went with Tamron over Sigma Art primarily because of the superior weather sealing, and slightly better sharpness. Though, the Sigma looks like a pretty solid choice as well, in general. Shooting outdoors a lot means I need that weather sealing, though.
      Looking forward to playing with it!

      I know it's been a while, but if have used a Canon version mark I or II vs. this Tamron, is the Bokeh in this better than the original Mark I of this? Does the background melt away better on the G2 than the first model like the Canon?

      @@NabiloBell I don't know, tho if you do alot of headshot style portraits the 70-200 is much better, weddings is also quite a bit easier and at the long end the compression is not to bad and it works nicely with that 2.8 aperture

    Excellent review. As a result I have just ordered this lens. Been working with the 28-300mm for a few years and have become increasingly disappointed with its lack of sharpness and nasty vignetting. After purchasing the Tamron 35mm (with help from your review on this lens) I am very impressed with the overall quality of Tamron.

    Another good review, Christopher. I bought this lens earlier this year. I wanted to upgrade from my older Canon 70-200mm f2.8 version 1 lens which while good was showing it's age. I like this focal length for sports and wildlife as well as when I'm at events or weddings. Overall I have been very happy with it, it is sharper than my old Canon was. I was influenced to get this lens because I had previously gotten the new Tamron 150-600mm G2 and found it to be a great lens.

    Good stuff Chris. I always check your review before making purchases. I bought this lens based on your review but had to send it back and i was very sad to do so. I tested it on my 6D as well and was very pleased. However that happiness turned to sadness when I tested it on my APS-H Canon 1D Mark IV (my sports shooter). The images were noticeably softer. I tried to make adjustments to help it out but in the end there was nothing I could do. I bought it to specifically replace the 70-200 DI VC USD version which captured razor sharp photos with my 1D. So I guess its worth noting that this lens loves to be mated with Full Frame cameras but not so much with anything else. I'm sure I could have maybe purchased the tap device to calibrate but after spending $1000 I didnt feel it was worth the effort. So I sent the G2 back and I'm happy with my Di VC USD 70-200, now that I know better. Hey, why have you not reviewed the 70-200 di VC USD??

    Have you considered adding a focus breathing test to your zoom lens reviews?
    I find I shoot with my canon 70-200 2.8 mostly at the 200mm end and at the distance I shoot portraits at I know the previous version of the tamron had massive focus breathing issues. Meaning I wouldn't get the same compression and bokeh and basically not getting a full 200mm equivalent. Not always a deal breaker for everyone but definitely should be considered when comparing lenses.

    • @dxkaiyuan4177
      @dxkaiyuan4177 7 років тому

      Yeah Tony & Chelsea did bring up issues about focus breathing for some old nikon 70-200. I think Chris could add this test to his already very comprehensive testing methods!

    • @kb8729

      Probably better off using a 105/135 instead at full compression. Think 70-200 is better for distance / sports / wildlife.

Never been too overjoyed with my tamron 24-70 G2 which I will sell and put the money towards RF 24-105 F4, but the 70-200 G2 has always been another level even on a modern RF mount camera its still the bargain of the century :D

    Hey Chris, my copy I got when it came out does not make any noise when you cut VC on. This may been something with your copy. BTW my test for focus accuracy yielded 98% or better on average, which is on par with my Canons lenses. I did have to do some micro adjusting though on both ends, forgot what I had to adjust them to but it was not to bad off. Enjoyed the video. Cheers..

    Indeed, Tamrom has upped the ante. Canon and Nikon should be scared really scared. This unit is almost 1/2 of the price of the Nikon version FL VR. Even Tamron's 24-70 G2 is equally stunning. The built quality of this 70-200 G2 is sublime. Get it, put it through it's paces and achieve images you're sure to cherish forever. This unit is meant to last a lifetime. This or the Canon version, hard to decide, because the price difference in Chile is way large, the tamron costs around $1.200.000.- million pesos (around US$2.000.-) and the Canon $1.600.000.- million pesos (around US$2,600.-) but technical support and replacement pieces are inexistent for the tamron in my country, only Canon has full technical support and service.
    Maybe it's worth getting the Canon version, but the sharpness and contrast of the Tamron is...amazingly wonderful!

    Christian, thanks for the review. I watched it a thousand times, and did buy the lens in the end. Did you have to use the tap in console to calibrate your lens before the review? It is quite annoying that I'm having to calibrate it, as it is back and front focusing at different focal lengths. That is a little disappointing, considering that I got the sigma 17-55mm f2.8, also based on your nice review, and was very happy about it - it is very cheap, and it came already super sharp by default.

    Nice review as usual Christopher. Maybe I'll consider offloading my Canon 70-200 f4 and buy this instead.

      I did exactly that. Sold my Canon 70-200 f/4 on Craigslist and bought this one (Tamron 70-200 G2). I don't regret my decision at all. Just out of curiosity, I rented the Canon 70-200 f2.8 II to compare them. The AF does do a tiny bit less hunting on the Canon, but the VC, price, warranty (6yr), fantastic build quality, superior weather sealing, and included tap in console (in case if I actually needed to adjust it or update firmware) led me to stick with the Tamron.

    I'm curious about the SLR clock you use around the 6:20 mark for close up detail, is that something you have a link for?

    love your videos mate very informative and well made! i have a question as to if i should purchase the sigma 70-200mm 2.8 EX DG HSM. i am currently using a canon 60d and am wondering if it is worth it to own that lens or save up for one such as the tamron or canon.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  5 років тому

      I haven't tried that lens before I'm afraid - I know that the older Sigma lenses weren't so good. Apparently the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 VC is pretty good and good value for money

    Thanks for a GREAT REVIEW!
    I am looking to get both lenses of Tamrons new lenses (24-70 and 70-200), but going for 1 this year and the other in the beginning of next. In my bag atm i have a sigma 50mm art and Tamron 90mm 2.8 SP macro G2. I usually rent both 24-70 and 70-200 lenses when hired for events such as weddings, what would you buy first?
    Kind regard Emil

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 років тому +1

      Tricky question because they're both very important lenses. I think you should get the 24-70 first because you will absolutely need at least some wide angle shots.
