Whether this was the case with the release of the My Little Pony or Walking Dead crossovers is debatable, but ever since the initial official announcement of Lord of the Rings, you would probably be justified in using the slippery slope argument to predict Universes Beyond becoming as prevalent as it is currently confirmed to be in 2025, and would be even more justified in doing so now.
However, this doesn't mean that using a slippery slope argument is never a fallacy, it's just a matter of context.

I quit for a while and just started up again after 6 months break. My current philosophy is: engage in the sets I like (no cowboys, UB, or racecars). I only play casually; typically with players that avoid UB. I buy proxies (no reason to own 7x FoW) and go for old border custom art. I play premodern. I've bought 2x playsets of power 9 (proxies) to play Canlander with a friend who shares my feelings. Hasbro/Wotc has created a schism in the community that hits LGSes the most due to a fear of engaging with UB and/or "UB light" sets. Kitchen table mtg is the future along with Cube.
Irs crazy that commander nights and UB is something like 5% of the playerbase and the vast vast majority of players dont watch content dont go to stores and play on the kitchen table.

Now in all honesty, I'm sure most of that stuff won't come true. Maybe that box topper. And I could see a skibidi toilet thing showing up in 2 years since it takes Wizards a couple years to create something relevant, which in effect makes it very dated once it comes out. Yeah this is all a hard pass for me, I'll stick to Cube and Oldframe 93/94.

Well said Mark. It's taken a while for me to be able to take a step back and look at magic from an outside perspective. I'm just not the target audience anymore, and I think that's ok
I totally agree with you, WotC will no doubt make buckets of money in the short term. But as the game becomes an amalgamation of collabs and all the old guard players leave and the UB players leave when their IP has come and gone and I think the game will start to show the irreparable damage now that this UB junk is in here.
After Final fantasy. Thinking about stopping my collecting of MTG. I can retire now if i quit spending all my cash on MTG. Go buy a condo in Thailand or a house in Japan... but im too addicted in buying cardboard 😂...
we got here with a slow boil starting in the mid 2010s as the leardership of wotc slowly embraced american progressive corporate culture, and the players tolerated it "because it's the right thing".
And as happens with every IP subjected to the moralist cancer and/or the enshittification of american corporate stakeholder culture, magic's identity is slowly becoming the same slop everyone else serves you.
the only thing that still remains is gameplay, and that as well is quickly deteriorating as profits trump gameplay.
7:12 I disagree on the framing. It is the game right now but it's not Magic, it's something else. It's Universes Beyond TCG. The question is whether or not we want to play Universes Beyond TCG.
Foundations Play Booster Limited is MTG and I'll gladly play that, but I haven't purchased a universes beyond product yet
@@codyhanson1344 Yeah, Foundations feels like a send off to classic Magic as it was and the reality of Universes Beyond TCG hasn't set in for everyone just yet but once the Final Fantasy set releases, and Spiderman soon after, the reality is going to start hitting people
where did all the creative people gone. All the movies just get ripped off or has 12 sequels. Now a card game known for its own created story and characters is now just hey you like thing here thing shove in face. When was the last time they made a new part of the story that most people liked?

People always degrade yugioh for having been inspired by MTG rather than being it's own original concept from the ground up, but now Magic is straight up scraping from other IPs directly. At least Yugioh was somewhat clever with its inspirations.
@@codyhanson1344 WotC is making money off of other fanbases by sacrificing their own. Each UB set is just another nail in the pine box for MTG’s own uniqueness and creativity. You’ll see some (not all) content creators (free advertisers) praise them. They need relevant content to post to boost their algorithm/traffic, etc. They’re basically contributing to the overall decay of MTG whether they love the game or not every time they praise and push UB. You can go online and find a plethora of fan made cards that work mechanically for MTG that have never been printed. Anyone can make a functioning Iron-Man card and use trash AI art for the picture. They are going the easy route. Look into how they’re treating their artists too.
I got back into it during Kaladesh, really jumped back in hard. I didn't have much to complain about until I'd say around Modern Horizons. Ever since then it seems like a constant barrage of releases and in order to play and compete in the game the way I enjoyed was starting to take a ton of time to keep up with. Once Universes Beyond happened I wasn't happy about it but the IPs they picked seemed fairly close to Magic so it wasn't the end of the world. I'd say over the last three years I've just grown disgusted by the game. I stopped paying attention to new releases around Midnight Hunt. The Magic 30 money grab, universes beyond going WAY outside what I'm happy with, too much product thrown my way, has all turned me off but the real thing about the new direction Hasbro has taken that has completely forced me away from even casual play is the way they've completely sold out their own IP. Taking the universes beyond approach is Hasbro's way of telling the fanbase they've given up on their own IP and Magic is now something totally different. Their characters are now little furry animals in one set, cowboys in another, teachers in another, astronauts... What a shallow way to get minimal temporary gain, congrats, you killed what so many people spent 30 years building up. Its an unsustainable model they've built. Higher and higher profits means more and more releases and higher costs. Best of luck to everyone getting into it that enjoys it but the whole thing seems to me now like Hasbro cashing in as best they can on a sinking ship and I can't see anyone staying around long term and Wizards knows it.

My whole pod, that used to be 12+ strong just... vanished, in a couple of weeks.
Suddenly everyone (me included) got burnt out by the constant barrage of new release and the constant powercreep.
Just tell everyone to make a deck using only cards from one particular set, then it's both an even playing field and a much more manageable experience.
The game’s current direction is just not what I want to play. My feelings can best be summed up by Rhystic Studies article, “Your Foundation is Rotten”.
I am happy for people who are excited by all the new UB sets, for me it is not the world I want to play in and when the standard sets don’t event feel like Magic anymore, I am slowly becoming less interested in the game.
I have given up, I started in 95, just traded over $20k of “playable” magic cards for high end Pokémon and sealed, best decision ever, pokemon just makes money, commander is boring af, I kept my reserve list

Agree. I feel I'm moving on as well. I just purchased a My little pony card to include on the last page of my last binder to symbolize why I stopped collecting new cards. There is still some cool older stuff I'd like for my collection but done with new magic.
My biggest issue is the universes beyond stuff being in every format. Don't like spiderman or marvel? Too fucking bad it's a top tier meta deck in every format and you either have to play it or lose!
But that's a Spike-y decision, and if you make spike-y decisions, you're not allowed to make Vorthos complaints.
This is what happens when you bring in removed executives infatuated with micro transactions from the realm of video games. These are the equivalent to buying skins in things like fortnite.

As a huge Warhammer nerd, There is need for Correction. Warhammer began in 1983 as a traditional medieval fantasy tabletop war game. The space & sci-fi stuff did not come until the spin-off Warhammer 40,000 in 1987 but there are two Warhammer games/ settings Warhammer Fantasy today called Age of Sigmar, and Warhammer 40K each with their own games their own lore, models ECT....

I’m glad I left MTG for Flesh and Blood. They care about their own IP and lore. I don’t have to worry about Universes Beyond, Secret Liars, collector packs or Horizon style sets again.
I know that negativity gets the clicks, but I just came here to say that I play custom tokens including: Bongocat, Karameru, Nyan Cat, Calvin & Hobbes, and I almost made tokens of Garfield & Hello Kitty, but ran out of token slots in the deck (maybe in the future). I like the idea of Universes Beyond.... However, I don't think WotC does UB very well at all. They lack the knowledge and in-depth understanding of the lore of these other worlds, and the UB cards seem slapped together for the most part. I encourage you to make your own custom tokens and play the game you love!!
The problem isn't that you like that, those are custom cards and you cannot play these in a sanctioned tournament and should expect to be kicked out of the game if you play them casually without asking first.
And I would not mind playing against them, considering they're balanced, but the point is that these are official so at a sanctioned tournament I am forced to play against them and in a casual setting it is now on me to ask permission to play without them.
And just the fact that I am being forced to means that I don't want to. And I for one am leaving over both that and the fact that they release a new set every hour.
I think you hit the nail on the head talking about 6 standard sets a year. Every 2 months there will be a standard release - basically every month is going to be spoiler season. It's going to be exhausting and I think that is going to cause a lot of people to leave the game, or at least the competitive scene. The fact that half of those sets are going to be goofy IPs doesn't help.
I get the strategy, the UB sets draw new players. Just sucks to be a veteran and basically be shown the door.

Lol, I guess I'm Nobody today. I've been playing and running events for 12 years. Matter of fact I'm leaving to go to the jp language National Championship in NY tomorrow morning.
Actually over in Asia Weiss has Marvel, Disney and Pixar cards. We also have ENG cards for Adventure Time. Also Weiss does not have its own IP. Every set is a cross over. Now sometimes we get IPs that Bushiroad owns but every set is IP based.
I played competitive level MTG from 5th edition to Phyrexia reborn. One thing I didn't like about mtg was how little I cared about the mtg universe and its characters. Getting a chance to play with characters I love sold me on Weiss and I never looked back. I can't imagine I'm alone in this. Collectors will want cards of their favorite marvel hero and players will want to play them. If that wasn't the case you wouldn't have the uproar over how the secret lair was done.
Well I mean you can rule zero this stuff, my group isn't going to play these cards. Honestly, its bit ridiculous when on the table there is Patrick, Slannesh demon, wolverine, the one ring and a Hidetsugu card . Its like messed up version old 90's Nick commercial. Also @8:50 Marklouisspark had a point about keeping a little bit of gate keeping of what should be acceptable and what isn't. I mean Warhammer isn't perfect but at least it stays with in theme with its own universe.

If you count reskins, it gets too big to list. There's also the Walking Dead vs. the Transformers vs. Fallout vs. Warhammer 40K vs. Doctor Who vs. Street Fighter vs. Final Fantasy vs. Marvel vs. Jurassic Park. There's even another that's still unnamed planned for next year, plus an entire set based on Spiderman. This is asinine and I'm going to switch to something else. I'm not sure what yet, but WotC and Hasbro clearly aren't going to stop this trend voluntarily.

I think it is even worse. They know it can/will harm their own brand and standing as one of the top TCGs but they don't care anymore. Not sure about the public faces like Blake or Mark, but the bosses of their bosses just want the money flowing up, even if it utterly lays waste to the game. They just don't care as long as they can meet their quarterly goals and have a nice entry on their CV (and some stock options and such).
I feel more and more disenfranchised with Magic and that after well over 20 years in the game. It gets a hollow shell, like "we have this rule set and anyone can bring in their stuff to make it work". That is not what Magic is about - or at least what it WAS about. It will change into his stupidity and ruin its reputation irreparably.
Not sure though if it was the Covid market to blame, it started earlier with their dumb as f.. FIRE design and everything having ten different versions while cutting down on card quality. That slope only got steeper as Magic tumbled (or got pushed) into the drains by Hasbro.
Its commander, theatre kids migrating over from D&D once they watched critical role, and funko pop nonsense.
If we wanted mtg to succeed we needed to keep theatres kids out of the game, off of youtube, and out of wotc.
One big thing everyone is missing so far: Play groups will get closed off; having IP only pods vs non ip pods vs mix ip pods. Disenfranchisement at its maximum.
Also You cannot say mtg sux and then say wotc will still be ok. mtg will linger on but thats it. It WILL NOT get better, copium & complaints, as time has shown, do not help.
Lastely: Spiderman and FF hasn't even come put and you are already liking it?...you're adding to the problem you are complaining about. Lol
