shouldn t stand at the left side at 4.51min cant cast more than 1 nonartifactspell ?
In the video Carl takes out 3 Undying Malice from the main deck to sideboard in 3 Kolaghan's Command. What happened here? In the list the Malice is in the sideboard as well
@@marmics96 Thoralf assembled the decks so we wouldn't see what each other was playing. He seems to have put the Undying malice in the maindeck by mistake 😅 I seem to have been playing a 63-card deck
@@CardmarketMagicwhy on earth did you search for a Ball Lightning instead of a Lightning Skelemental when you had a swamp and no mountains in your hand??? You knew you weren't drawing a red source, you were drawing the elemental you just put at the top of your deck! Lightning Skelemental is even the better card!
Also, why are you searching up an elemental to the top of your library before you have enough mana to cast that one or the one already in your hand? Wouldn't it be better to get a land to cast the first one and then search up another one after when you can cast it? And bring back the first one using the recursion in your hand in between? Doing that would also have let you already drawn the Terminate when you needed it during the third game
@joedoe7572 misplays are misplays but it's obviously a lot easier for us to Monday morning QB the game, as far as the ball lightning goes, I believe he said he went and got it for the fun of it as it was the decks namesake.
Janky "off-meta" decks like this perfectly encapsulate the spirit of the game and are a blast to watch
I love these kinds of brews, too. Just plain silly good fun with lots of ways to interact.

I first stopped playing before modern was a thing, and then came back around MH2, and until this video I never really understood the appeal of modern. But this is great.
@@japplek fury and the ring have to be banned out of modern and they have to print a more useful/versatile sideboard card than orvar/hallowed moonlight/containment priest (like a permanent answer to shut it down not a single use answer as onboard containment priest would get killed and this dumb ass card design like creativity and crashing footfalls avoids grafdiggers cage) against creativity decks then modern could be a great format again
1. ban fury bring back fun creature decks and tribals
2. ban the ring its so stupid i dont even have to explain everyone knows it
3. print a better version of grafdiggers cage that hates on the opressive combo decks without having to ban those decks
they used to be meta, then powercreep happened. i miss the old days where not every deckplan was about generating cardadvantage and often was just about building up your boardstate over several turns :(

The OG-versions in Legacy used to run Glint Hawk as well to make it easier to get the Erayo flip

Literally had no idea that card existed, now I wanna try it out in my Jhoira cedh deck, doesn't seem to hard to flip in that deck and a free counter each turn is great combined with my usual counter magic.

I cannot be the only one thinking that between all of Karl's puns and Jamin's face after top decking the incorrect card, these guys have one of the best interactions when it comes to playing and being enjoyable.
+ I cried so badly in the middle of the night from all of karl's puns, playing vs the asian avenger with biovisionary and clones.
They are pretty decent guys!

The fact that Karl cycled into a removal spell to deal with Erayo makes Game 3 even more brutal

I know there are some financial reasons for keeping the budget low but damn does it also make people submit fun decks! That Ball Lightning deck was on a roll!
We had once planned to do these yearly. But when we got a bigger budget, we realized what people managed to fit under the budget is always so much more fun than whatever tier deck with a worse manabase that we could get out of 500-600€ decks, so we opted with doing this far more often per year, but keep the 100€ budget that way we get to give more decks and the submissions are much more creative :)

Very neat catch of the deck creator to recognize how often a low-curve artifact deck is able to just vomit out their hand. Definitely a bit of an all-in play but still really cool.
That being said, both decks are super neat and I love the creativity on display with 'em!

@@kizzaht yeah, it was impactful. But I prefer games that have a closer back and forth and it was pretty clear Carl had few outs after the flip(s).
I used to play it in a weird Modern version of the more famous Vintage Paradoxical Outcome deck; no moxes, but a ton of Ornithopters, Memnites and Tormod's Crypts. Given this was during the infamous Hogaak era, between the Crypts and Erayo, it won a lot more games than it should have!
as a regular edh newbie this is a great method of introducing to non-arena "standard"-like formats, with brief explanations of the decks and cards in it
Obviously Thoralf is an exceptional MtG player and we get to see that on this channel often enough. But, I often get the sense Jamin could be that level too if he wanted to commit to it. Seeing that line of play to flip Erayo in game 2 was beautiful.
Carl might not be a pro player, but you should not underestimate him. He is a pretty good player as well
I just wanted to comment to say, I don't know what magic you guys work but your calls to action work on me better than any other youtube video. I've been liking every damn video, way more than any other creators. Maybe it's just that they're that good!

Grabbing a Ball Lightning instead of Skelemental with {R/B}{R/B}{B} available and the Terminate at sorcery speed were certainly choices that were made in game 1
He literally lost the game by tutoring uncastable cards on the top of his deck and preventing himself from being able to draw lands.
Even if he could have cast ball lightning, why would you ever take it over the skelemental
I quit watching when he did that. This isn't the first time I've seen these guys basically give the game away because -- fun? It's not a hard choice either. A playable or non-playable card? I'll choose non-playable

@iangorton8390 ahhh yes, you must've never made a mistake playing Magic all day long. Even Thoralf, a top tier player makes mistakes even when they get guests that have been top 8 in world's they still make mistakes...but it's JUST for content.... 😆

Turn 2 Erayo ended the game righ there.
Played an oops all ball lightnings years ago with Greater Good and Aether Vial in it. It was super powerful and also incredibly janky. Ball Lightning, Groundbreaker, Spark Trooper, and Spark Elemental all made appearances. Took top 8 and top 4 at different FNMs. It was a good time.
“It’s ok, you did cool things” is the spirit and true heart of Magic!

2 Insolent Neonate could be an interesting addition to the ball lightning deck. Being able to get them into the graveyard to unearth seems pretty strong

11:15 a very cool play would've been to play the Thunderkin, attack reanimating the BALL, and after blocks Terminate what blocked the BALL to trample through for a clean 6

This reminds me of when I first started playing magic in the early '00s. A friend who'd been playing for years showed me his aggro deck with ball lightning and it blew my mind. It was so much cooler than the Lightning Elementals I had from my dinky 7th edition starter deck. Also, spot on that it's impossible to say Lightning Skelemental without a smile.

15:10 I think Undying Malice is to keep and buff your Thunderkin Awakener.
Buffing it seems kind of unnecessary though, unless you intend to revive a second one to trigger as well.
Yeah, it's not really necessary to waste an extra card on the Awakener, who doesn't need the toughness pump to do its thing and who really only needs to do its trick the turn it comes down (if it stays alive for a second turn, the game was probably a curbstomp in your favor to begin with). IMO it's more likely that the deck creator misunderstood the wording on Ball Lightning's ability, thinking that "at the beginning of the end step" only meant its controller's end step instead of every end step, which is how the card actually works (and how it's always worked since debuting in The Dark). There were a few since-deleted comments here where others made the same mistake, so to me it's a more plausible explanation than the card being maindecked to be a rather suboptimal support piece for another support piece (the Thunderkin Awakener).
These two are always really fun to watch together
I think stuff like that game 2 shows how important a strong mana base is. The kind of mana base in a meta modern deck very likely wouldn’t have had the lack of an extra black holding it back from the interaction it needed to pitch an inquisition into a terminate

Also... my fav content you guys have ever done is giving people $100 to build weird decks at cons. Would love to see more of that (and these)!!!

Man. I have to look up the decklist, but I had made a similar deck to the ball of lightning one, except it was trying to abuse sundial of the Infinite and ran basically all multicolor lands so you could play essentially all the ball of lightning elementals possible. Fun as hell
Aha! I'm not the only one who loves the OG moonfolk! I remember thinking they looked so bad-to-average when Champions came out but i have had so much fun using them with newer cards. Great games!

Two really fun decks, this was great to watch! Erayo has been one of my favorite cards for a long time and I’ve always wanted to see if I could make it shine, I’m definitely using this build for inspiration :)
I have to say I can't help myself to look at the time with things like this; when game 1 took up half the vid I was certain Karl had this and then Jamin pulled the turn 2 Erayo; that was not the turnaround I was explecting. Nicely done

I've been building a cycle of scam decks, im starting with all the 2 color combos, I might move to 3 color scam, but so far, they look fun.

That ball lightning deck is very similar to my modern ball lightning deck. Mine is quite a bit stronger, but awesome to see someone who had the same idea. Loved watching it in action.

That erayo was brutal…and it’s so cheap to…cuz the only other spell I can think of off the top of my head that does that is jin-gitaxias for 5UU…so getting the counter ability on turn two for three mana is crazy
It needs more cards though to work compared to gitaxias, erayo + chimeric + repeal is already 3 cards. But I can totally see a deck with a lot of ornithopter, memnite, gitaxian probe, etc and ways to tutor erayo. Could be really powerful and reliable, locking someone out of the game on T2 or even T1 (with fast mana like moxes or sac double lands)
it would really just slot easily into any deck with a lot of cantrips/cheap spells....and in fast formats thats not to hard@@siradzki5905

Game 1 searching for Ball lightning instead of Lightning Skelemental and then missing triple red on turn 3 was really painful to watch.

I know it was mot the optimal play and I knew when doing it, but I wanted specifically to introduce the idea of the deck early. In these casual videos it's important to stress entertainment over the optimal play sometimes. Besides, I was pretty confident I would draw something to do by turn 3 👍 but also, we don't have time to "learn" the decks beforehand anyway. Playing in these videos is only a tiny part of our job

Small note... On the first game Jamin discards ethersworn canonist to lightning skelemtal however it isn't removed from the (Hand interface)
