    Thank you so much!! This was exactly what I needed. I can’t believe this video doesn’t have more views. I’m putting together my UA-cam gear and have been stuck on what lens to buy. I think I’ll go with the 35mm first since I have a tiny space to shoot in

    I wish you'd mention if they're 35mm on a full frame or APS-C. This makes a huge difference.

  • @casade2831

    Wow!! I can't even tell you how good this video is. I was about to buy another lens just for the 16mm hype. This is the best video I have found and learned from for wide vs. narrower lenses or anything else youtube heads related. I thought I wanted a 16 mm, but honestly, I think the 50 mm looks better on you too. Your shoulders and the shape of your face look normal. The 16, 24, or even 35mm make you look distorted. (your shoulders go back and your face forward)
    I do not have broad shoulders, and the 16 mm would make me look terrible. The neck looks super skinny and pushes the face forward. (I am already out of shape, and I kinda look like that already)
    Yes, I will need more space in front of me to position my camera with the 50mm lens, but I am willing to move my desk and chair!
    People talk a lot about clear or crisp images and blah blah, but this subject is a million times more important. 99% of people can't tell the difference between a crisp image, but they can see an "ugly" or unattractive body shape.
    I just bought my camera, and it comes with a 50mm 1.8. I am new to anything cameras or lenses, and from watching hundreds of videos full of hype, I was afraid I had made a mistake. (I didn't know any different when I bought it)
    This has been the most important video about lenses. It talks about what truly matters for people wanting to LOOK GOOD on youtube as talking heads. Thank you so very much.

      You are so very welcome @casade ! You made my day with such a flattering comment and how helpful it was for you. I am honestly happy to know I was able to help you out. It is the main reason why I make this content. Another trick you can do, is to set your camera with lens and a table (or desk) in your garage or outdoors (when it's not raining) just to see exactly how much space you'd need between your camera and you and your back and your background. You can then measure the distances and see if you have that same space in the room you are going to end up using as your studio. Sometimes we need more space than we think we need and sometimes we need less space than the space we thought we needed. I hope this helps and have an excellent 2022!! Cheers!

      @@BestAudiovisualTricks It does help and thank you. I ONLY want to use 50mm for my UA-cam (talking-head) videos. Why? Because I don't want distortion on my face and body like a 16 0r, even a 35 mm make.
      The problem I have now is that my Sony ZV e10 is an APS-C, making it worse to use my 50mm lens in my rather small office!!!
      I do not care about touching the camera too much, but I want to have a small teleprompter in front of it, and I can't read it if it's too far away.
      I will return my ZV e10 and will buy the Full- frame Sony a7c for the extra little bit of room only !! Err. Oh, and the extra Bokeh that will get with it too.
      I don't know if it will make a huge difference in real state in my office, but anything that gets me closer to the camera at 50mm, it's probably worth it.
      I do not want to use a lens speed-booster because it will also distort my face and body.
      The room size, camera reachability, and the full-frame vs. APS-C do matter, but in my case, the 50 mm is a must-have for more realistic looks, which worsens the room, length, and practicability situation. Did I mention the teleprompter to read and look straight into the camera? OMG!! This is nuts, and I am going po po poor!

      @@RicoManila I guess. If you want to look “attractive”, use nothing less than 35mm . 50mm would be better but won’t be too close to you as it needs more distance from the camera and yourself.

    Hey B.A.T. I have watched so many photography/videography/gear videos but this one is a GAME CHANGER!
    Thank you so much!
    I am very overweight and I have a Lumix S5 I kit lens that is 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 and a Lumix S 35mm f/1.8
    In my studio I will have good lighting so the f/3.5 of the 20mm will not bu such an issue.
    But my next lens will probably be 24mm or below.
    Now when I watch weight loss content creators I will mentally check if they are changing lenses.
    Because someone might start the weight loss with an 85mm and finish with a 16mm and there will extra effect lol

    Great video! Everything I was looking for! Just one question: I got a Sony A7C, but I’m still needing to save on lenses. I have the same idea of you, that 35mm would look better on me. But buying a APS lens (like sigma), to get a 35mm look, should I buy a 24mm one instead? Hope I made myself clear haha

    • @BestAudiovisualTricks
      @BestAudiovisualTricks  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Vero! I have the Sony A7C as well. I went through the same or similar thought process as you. I needed a wide enough lens to use as my talking head lens but inside my car. I purchased the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens and that was not quite wide enough for my needs. Also, it is a 900 bucks lens. So, if you want to save on lens cost, you could go with the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens. Why this lens?
      Well, not only it has the best reviews from all the APS-C Sigma lenses, but you can use it on your A7C and at f/1.4 which is really good in low light and creates very nice pleasing bokeh. Nonetheless, I use it at f/2.0 because the depth of field at f/1.4 is way too shallow for my needs.
      Now, your A7C has a feature called 'APS-C/Super 35mm'. It is typically set to 'Auto' by default but if you turn it off, it will use the full 16mm BUT with vignetting. Now, depending on your needs, that might or might not be a problem. For the talking head I do inside my car, it is not a problem at all. The vignetting is visible, but it blends with the edges of my frame and because I am in the middle of the frame, it does not affect my videos.
      However, if the 'APS-C/Super 35mm' is left set to 'Auto', then your A7C will automatically crop the APS-C factor out of your frame and it'll let you with a 30mm field of view.
      That said, it all depends on your specific needs. This Sigma 16mm is perfect for me because it gives me that extra room that the 20mm cannot provide me with, the f/1.4 is amazing in low light, the price is fantastic (currently at $374) AND, the Sony autofocus works truly flawlessly as if it was a native Sony lens. AND... if you use the Catalyst Browser, the files you make with this lens also have the gyro information to stabilize your footage later in post.
      Now, you also have the Sigma 24mm (full frame) at f/1.4, but that is an 800 bucks lens.
      You could always try the Sigma 16mm, and if you truly hate it or if it does not quite do what you want it to do, you can always return it. It it'll be a 30mm on your A7C by default, so 30 is closer to 35 than the 24.
      Just that. I hope this helps you and please let me know if you have further questions.
      Cheers to your success Vero!

    Thank you very nice content, for my personal sensibility i prefer you on a 100mm, all these mm proportions are for the full frame format right not in the aps-c format right? My self I have a sony a6600 and I was wondering if it make a huge difference a 16mm or a 18mm to hendheld a shooting head/vlogging/ out of a studio/on the move. I would like to choose between a 16-55 and a 18-105, I would possibly prefer the 18-105 for now ut I have no idea if i can hold the camera without a tripod and being not too close with a 18mm (for aps-c format). Thanks, Max

      @BestAudiovisualTricks  2 роки тому

      Hey Max! the difference between 16 and 18mm is very small even if you are shooting a head vlogging type video. However, if you are shooting with a very tight physical space like let's say inside your car and the camera is just in front of you, then that extra 2mm could make a difference for you. Other than a very specific situation like that one (constricted by physical space), 2mm less would and should not be a problem. Specially in your case that you actually prefer the 18-105mm.
      Another alternative is to get the 18-105mm and also get the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens which a fantastic lens in low light and it is fairly inexpensive at $374 (compared to the other expensive lenses in the market). It is an APS-C lens, and therefore it will be a true 16mm on your a6600.
      I hope this helps matey and let me know if you have any further questions! Cheers! :)

    I have a canon m50, i need a lens for it 22mm or 50 mm ? 🤔
    My studio is little just 3 meters, because it is just my room 😅 and I want blurry background

    • @BestAudiovisualTricks
      @BestAudiovisualTricks  2 роки тому +1

      Friend, I am glad to help. Well, here’s what I would do in your particular situation. I would go with the 22mm just because you only have 3 meters behind you, and the only way you can get a blurry background at that distance is by buying one of those inexpensive‘blurry effect’ backgrounds you can get at Amazon for example. If you watch my ‘Jack Sparrow’s Bandana’ video, you will find I used one of them (blue bokeh) for a few clips. In that video I had pretty much the same distance you have behind my back. You can find lots of those backgrounds, at several different sizes and for very little money. They work great. Search for: ‘bokeh background’ on Amazon just to have a glimpse of the options you have. Glad to help matey! Have an amazing day! 🙂👍🏻👍🏻

      @@BestAudiovisualTricks does that bokeh background work with kit lens 15-45? I have one.

    • @BestAudiovisualTricks
      @BestAudiovisualTricks  2 роки тому +1

      @@shokh_tv Yes, it should work just fine. It is a gimmick, so it creates the illusion of being out of focus but at that short distance it is not ‘really’ out of focus. Give it a shot, most people watching your video will not know the difference anyway. But it is basically the only option with just 3 meters behind you. Keep me posted on how it went! 🙂👍🏻👍🏻

    Great video for beginners 🎉🎉
    I am from India and I have a question.
    In your whole video you are using very bright lights but the wall behind you is completely dark. How did you do that ??

    • @BestAudiovisualTricks
      @BestAudiovisualTricks  10 місяців тому +4

      Greetings Dr!
      One important trick is to always set your ISO to as low as you camera allows you to set it because higher ISOs make your sensor more sensitive to light, either light sources and ambient light.
      If you are shooting with a Log profile, depending on your camera; you won’t be able to shoot lower than 400 or 800.
      But, with any other profile; you should be able to go as low as 100 ISO or even 80 ISO (L.ISO).
      You also want to try to use a ‘hair light’ meaning a light behind you or or on top of you pointing directly at the back of your head or the top (typically your hair). That creates separation between you and your background.
      Because you will be shooting al lower ISOs, you will need to set your lights a a much higher output (power). Not electrical power, but ‘brighter’ power.
      I hope this helps and let me know if you have any further questions! 😉

    Really nice video - well presented and I like the apples-with-apples comparison of focal lengths in a way that we can actually SEE the difference.
    When you suggest 35mm as the ideal focal length for your face shape / size - is that 35mm FULL FRAME or 35mm on your APS-C (i.e. equivalent to 50mm full frame)?
    I'm on MFT - I like the aspect ratio of the 16mm but have a decently large honker and am 95kgs / 210 lbs with a muscular build - so just trying to work out whether to go with 16mm (32mm Full Frame) Sigma F/1.4 or forego the autofocus and try playing with the TTArtisan 23mm f/1.4 (46mm full frame equivalent). Of course, there's also the Panasonic Leica 25mm f/1.4 for autofocus and generally a very well-respected lens, albeit quite a bit more expensive.
    Unfortunately, here in New Zealand the market place is pretty small so access to models for trial is pretty limited - you kinda just have to buy the lens and hope for the best - so I appreciate any / all advice.

My latest 5 videos have views from the first two days after publishing and they they flat out stop getting any views at all.
