This was like an entire 10 hour Udemy Course in a few minutes. "Just hit RECORD" is the best tip of all. Every time I decide I need to do a shoot, my brain comes up with reasons to NOT do so at this time. I do a countdown from five, grab the camera, mic, and tripod, and go.

Hi Gail, thanks :) Few things, what bit rate are you rendering you're video out at before you upload? If it's a low bit rate it's gonna be pixelated in places. I'd suggest rendering out in 4K as UA-cam gives more bandwidth to 4K files and also applies less compression so the video will look better. There is a dedicated teleprompter for the ZV-1 and small cameras. As long as the camera isn't recording the lens will shut down to conserve power. They're might be an autopower off setting that makes this unlimited, but off the top of my head I can't remember
Thanks for this Vic! Great points! How about wide lens for taking head? I'm tempted to get the zv-1 as it does seem to do it all for a starter device. There's something about the quality that is below an a6k series though. Love the hlg profiled look. Check out the look Lee Zavitz can get!
👋 sensor size can’t really compare with some like the 6400 or 6600 but it’s pretty close. I used the ZV1 entirely for this video with the exception of some broll but it’s the only camera I used for the talking head stuff and it works well to be fair.
Great tips Vic. I definitely need to take some of that on board. With regards to shooting in manual, this is something I want to do, but doing hiking videos, I'm a talking head then doing scenery shots or b-roll, it just isn't practical to be shooting manual, or am I wrong?
Hey dude. Yeah I get that totally. Manual does need constant work. Decide on the look you want and then use either aperture or shutter priority. Aperture priority will get you a blurry background while a 1/50 shutter speed in shutter priority will get you that cinematic motion blur. Potentially keep iso on auto. Definitely experiment and see which one works best but in either case the camera does a fair whack of the heavy lifting. Does this make sense?
Thanks dude! Appreciate the support and you taking the time to watch! Yeah, we're all guilty of these, but try and pick one error you've made, and make 100% sure it won't be in the next video. And just keep scaling it like that, and then refining!
@@VicBarry the camera lens started to click when focusing, zooming, just turning on. It was messing with the little bit of stability in the camera even more. The work order said "Lens operation replaced, updated Firmware while it was there, Complete Cleaning, a complete Repair and return to factory functions" Parts used: Lens assembly.... I'm not sure if all that means Mark Saiger = High Speed Abuse? 🤔😁😂😉
Rode in particular do nice iPhone mics depending on the type of iPhone connection you have, as do Deity and Saramonic. Video editing app? All depends on your needs to be honest. iMovie can suffice for basic stuff, but I find Premiere Rush or Lumafusion to be more than capable these days If I need to do something on the phone!
@@VicBarry yay thanks a lot ! I’m a realtor and plan to make short educational talking head vids with some animations and simple edits to make the flow crisp
Again Vic, you've hit the fix. Not only do you sound natural, your editing is superb. I'm learning oodles from your videos. I particularly like your 9-second mind-bore clip tip. I was always wondering how many and when to insert changes. Hey, quick question. I noticed you hac a second camera angle in this video. You had a quick side profile and leg-up viewing angle. How important are these inserts vs just doing b-roll + front shots? If using a second angle, will a main camera (mirroless Sony) and second smartphone work? Your thoughts? Okay, that was two questions. Oh, and the not winging it was a brillant tip as well. BOOM!
Hey Bill, thanks for the kind words. Really appreciate. You can 500 camera angles but they won’t matter if the story / idea doesn’t exist. That aside though, yeah. It helps refresh the brain. As for a smartphone doing second angle, absolutely but very much depends on the phone to be honest. If the quality or look of the video from the phone is totally different from the main camera then it’s going to be a jarring experience for the viewer and that’s not a good thing.
Great video thanks. Regarding Auto Focus settings, I am having issues with a sort of breathing in and out during the recording, even though I am not moving. I have a Sony A7S iii, 24mm G Master lens, and I am about the same distance as you are. I have tried all Auto Focus modes, spot mode, wide etc .. and it does it on all of them. Any ideas what I am doing wrong here? no worries if not .. but thought I would ask, as I have done all of the rest of your suggestions, so everything is great and ready to go, just this weird focus adjustment going on at times during the Video. thanks in advance and keep up the great content !

Great help here Mark. Shooting the corner angle and a change every 9 seconds resonated with me. I have a question please. Whilst working out a room and space, would using a green screen and creating my own back drop work in the interim? Thank you for your videos, Paul
It will but green screens can look terrible unless they’re lit evenly and you know what to do with them in post otherwise it’s just gonna look like a dodgy green screen which will add as more of a distraction to the audience than anything else

Can you make a video that's all about getting the most out of cheap microphones? I get that you need to stay close to the mic, you gotta avoid plosives, watch out for the proximity effect... but what I struggle with is EQ'ing it and "knowing when to stop" with compression. It's easy not to do those things, but it doesn't sound great. The mic I use is just the ModMic USB, and an omni-directional from a cheap headset. The omni directional doesn't sound bad, it doesn't have any filters built-in so it doesn't sound awful like most headsets. however, I don't know how to get more from it.
Bro you are awesome, you had my full attention the whole video, I laughed out loud 4-5 times, you explained so much and have helped me immensely. Such a great personality. I would kill to have your ability.

Sir can you also tell us, what lens are you using right now in this video ? and at around how much distance from camera ?
Really useful tips. Thank you.
Awesome. Thanks Matthew. Any tip in particular you really thought was super helpful?
Super video Vic, thanks for the tips.
Glad it was helpful. Thanks Paul
I am happy to see the quality of this video with a camera I just ordered! I was recording my videos with my iPhone 8...SMH Thanks for the tips!
Wow you are amazingly on point and very helpful
You are so welcome. Glad the video helped 🙏
Underrated Video. Great stuff
Appreciate it! Thanks Mauro
Great video and humor 🙌🏼🔥
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the video 🙏
@@VicBarry it does mate, cheers. Definitely something I need to practice with. Maybe when I'm on my own though. 😂
😂😂😂
The best video on the topic!
Thanks so much Rafal
Thanks Vic! You’re insights are always helpful!
I’m guilty of so many of these errors!😂 So glad I watched this video. Great lessons!
Thanks dude! Appreciate the support and you taking the time to watch! Yeah, we're all guilty of these, but try and pick one error you've made, and make 100% sure it won't be in the next video. And just keep scaling it like that, and then refining!
ZV1, the best value in a camera available today. Period.
Absolutely pal. 💯
My ZV-1 arrives back from repair today! Been almost 2 months without it...
Ouch. 2 MONTHS? Whhhhaaaatt was the issue exactly that took 2 months to fix?
@@VicBarry the camera lens started to click when focusing, zooming, just turning on. It was messing with the little bit of stability in the camera even more. The work order said "Lens operation replaced, updated Firmware while it was there, Complete Cleaning, a complete Repair and return to factory functions" Parts used: Lens assembly.... I'm not sure if all that means Mark Saiger = High Speed Abuse? 🤔😁😂😉
Hahahaa! That's crazy
Do you recommend an 85mm lens over others?!
Hey there, 85mm is probably a bit too much for a talking head, but it can work but you'll have to be a long way away from the camera
@@VicBarry thank you!
This is GOLD!!!!!
Thanks Michael 🙏
hi vic? can i make talking head videos with an iphone 13? its easier for me to edit on an iphone!
ABSOLUTELY!! Just make sure you've got well lit scene, and equally important is the audio! Make sure to use some sort of mic
@@VicBarry what’s a good iPhone mic and video edit app to edit on iPhone ?
Rode in particular do nice iPhone mics depending on the type of iPhone connection you have, as do Deity and Saramonic. Video editing app? All depends on your needs to be honest. iMovie can suffice for basic stuff, but I find Premiere Rush or Lumafusion to be more than capable these days If I need to do something on the phone!
@@VicBarry yay thanks a lot ! I’m a realtor and plan to make short educational talking head vids with some animations and simple edits to make the flow crisp
No probs. Awesome stuff. Best of luck 🙏
This is fantastic video. Loved it.
Thank you very much! Any point in particular resonate with you PJ?
@@VicBarry it is a no bs how to guide. It made everything very simplistic.
Sweet! Thanks for the reply PJ
Great tips, I need to really focus on talking to my audience and not to them.
Thanks Jon. Best of luck. Totally doable
Thanks for the video
You’re welcome.
@@VicBarry Excellent! Thanks, Vic.
Hey Paul, I don’t have the zv-1 to hand at the minute but take a look for focus sensitivity and speed. Pretty sure the zv-1 has this option but I’m not 100%
@@VicBarry thanks !! perfect, I will check that out.
Advice for people that are nearly color-blind trying to get into photography/videography?
Any settings to help me be confident that my colors are accurate for the next person that will look at the material?
For example, one time I chose colors for a bedroom and I chose a tan and a brown for a accent wall. Come to find out, it wasn't brown and it was maroon lol
great video
Thanks Mike, appreciate that :)
Great video again.👍🏻 Very useful tips, and I think I should pick some of those for my videos.🤔 I've just subscribed, but I've been following your ZV-1 videos. I think that will be my next gear update for my channel.
Hey 👋 awesome. Thanks for the sub. Which tip do you reckon was the most useful?
@@VicBarry I think those lightning tips and also editing tips for panning and cropping for making videos more interesting was something that I should use more.
Awesome. Thanks 🙏
This fkn guy... Again with an excellent video from start to finish. Thanks for the tips Vic!
LOL!!! Thanks . Too kind :) Which tip you think you'll put into practice first?
Great ideas and advice. Thanks once again Barry. 👏🙏
My pleasure! Which tip is the best do you think?
@@VicBarry the lighting bit and also the pauses when speaking. Never thought about the pauses that causes silence.
Thanks dude
GREAT VID! Keep it up 👍
Thank you. Keep watching 😃
Great help here Mark. Shooting the corner angle and a change every 9 seconds resonated with me.
I have a question please. Whilst working out a room and space, would using a green screen and creating my own back drop work in the interim?
Thank you for your videos,
Paul
It will but green screens can look terrible unless they’re lit evenly and you know what to do with them in post otherwise it’s just gonna look like a dodgy green screen which will add as more of a distraction to the audience than anything else
Great tips!!
Thanks Brian, which one is the best you reckon?
Amazing video 😮
Glad you think so! Thanks Ian

Great advice my man. Really trying with video, at 114 subscribers 🙏🏼
Epic video!
Hey Michael, thank you!! Hope you got some value from it
