Story Time!!! So about a year ago I was cashiering and rang up a family of deaf people and felt so bad that I couldn’t communicate with them. There was a lot of pointing and awkward hand gestures. This memory came back to haunt me about a couple of weeks ago so I’ve been watching your videos and teaching myself sign language during my free time. Lo and behold, I got a deaf customer in today. I was able to sign a few phrases to him. I felt super awkward but he looked so happy that I could even sign at all. So thank you so much for doing what you’re doing because I am able to put my foot in the door and experience the world in a different way!!
Tori Long I had two customers today at different times that were deaf and I felt like shit being only able to gesture and thank you. This is why I'm here watching:)
This was posted a year ago, but I just wanna say I experienced the same thing and it really is amazing seeing their faces light up when they meet someone who is learning sign to better communicate.

Hi. I’ve always wanted to learn asl. And I looked at the alphabet online and started to learn it. My daughters stopped what they were doing and just watched me. “Dad, what’s that?” They asked. I told them once what the letters are and they soaked it up like a sponge. So me and my two girls are slowly learning asl. And the best part is we really don’t need it. Neither of us knows anyone who is hard of hearing or deaf. But the three of us truly believe it’s the best language to know. Though some things confuse me, like the different ways of saying the same thing. For instance “why” is signed two ways that I learned just yesterday. But soon I’ll start using it around the house to imprint it better in our minds. Anyway. Thanks again for these videos. I’ll be back to give you an update someday. Sam
That's amazing that your little girls are leaning to sign as well. I wish I knew more people who knew how to sign in my life, but as I'm going to college soon, I figure I'll probably meet a few deaf people and I'm excited to learn ASL in depth. (There are also two different ways to sign how 😁)
Hi there, I see you posted this a while ago so I don't know if you're still looking for an answer to your question, but I'm learning and my teacher explained it like this: there's a few reasons you might see different signs to say the same thing. One is that there are older and newer signs, like how in English there are old words, for example, the words Shakespeare uses, and there are more modern words that we would prefer to use. Another reason is that one sign may have multiple general English interpretations or vice versa. For example, you might say "bathroom" "restroom" "toilet" etc all referring to the same general place or idea. There are also regional differences. My teacher has shown us that in the Midwest we would sign "pizza" different than the east coast, like how in English people in different parts of the country might say "soda" "pop" or "coke". Sorry this is so long, I hope it makes sense.
I want to learn sign language. People that are deaf, usually don't have very many IRL (In real life) friends. I would love to be friends with a deaf person, because if you don't give them a chance just because they're deaf, YOU are the one missing out. You and the deaf person could have a lot in common! I thank you for this video, and my family is very proud of me learning ASL.
Don’t have many very irl friends if they’re only surrounded by hearing people* Of course if they are a part of the deaf community then they have friends and a social circle. However it nice to bridge the gap and hearing people learn asl and we all become friends who understand each other. :)

You probably wont see this, but I want to say thank you for this. I managed to learn from this a while back and yesterday I had two deaf customers who were completely lost with the concept of the restaurant I work at. The little knowledge in signs that I knew actually went a long way and they appreciated the fact that I tried my best to communicate with them. thanks again!
Ive learned so much. I try to watch almost every day. I work with special needs students who are deaf. I want to be a better communicator with them. I ve watched people move their hands that would suggest that these people were signing. I had no idea what they are saying. I also have people in my family who are deaf and I want to be able to communicate better with the also
I have learned a little over 100 words fluently. Need to work more on my finger spelling and recognizing finger spelled words and work on numbers more too. Not sure if I'll ever have the chance to met a deaf person, but I'm really enjoying learning to sign and interpret.
Hello! I am a deaf teacher in Guangzhou, China. My wife is deaf in America. I am learning ASL sign language. You teach it very well! I will continue to focus on learning
I have your videos in my "language" playlist and routinely watch the first three episodes almost everyday. Yours is the one of the most effective series out there. Thank you so much and hope wholeheartedly that you'll continue to educate us further.
I am trying to learn sign because of a couple of customers that come in. Just me knowing sorry or yes makes them light up and I love it. Thank you so much!!!
Really appreciate the videos. I don't know anyone who is hard of hearing or deaf. But I work with a large variety of people and this is very useful. I've really developed a passion for learning this thanks to your videos
Thank you so much for these videos!! I really really like how you broke each sign down and explained it, it makes it SO much easier for me to try and learn, as I learn best by repeating it myself, but the way you did each sign was so helpful! Thank you :)
I am working towards being a first responder, whether that be an EMT, paramedic, or firefighter, and I want to be able to communicate with anyone I help. A couple of my friends have been learning ASL, and I was inspired to start learning for those two reasons. I love your videos, and they've been so helpful! Thank you.
After watching the movie CODA I decided I want to learn basic sign language. Your videos have been super helpful. I love how you sign so clearly from different angles and then slow down and repeat. You are a brilliant teacher. Thank you!
I'm beginning to learn sign language.. my son is a nonverbal autistic angel and we have to communicate somehow 😍 we are hoping for the best as he started with (i want again) 😍 Thanks for the video.. I appreciate it 🙏 Love
I love the side view and especially the slow motion- it is the same speed as my signing so it is perfect! I will practice speed- I promise! Thanks for your help. You are really special, Ashley.
Thanks so much for posting! I love these videos! Me and my 4 year old daughter are learning to sign together! My son is blind and is attending a school for the deaf and the blind in our state and we are around so many who are signing and we want to be able to join in the conversation! Even though my son is blind we are teaching him some signs as well because he rides the bus with quite a few deaf children. I love your channel!
YAY!!! New video!!!! I've been wanting for you to do another video! I am a beginner in ASL in high school and I watched all your videos. Hope you upload more often! Love you 😁💕💕
Thank you for the videos. I'm a grocery manager at a new location and I found one of my workers is deaf and no one wants to learn to communicate with the guy. So these simple videos really help me. Thank you!!!
I'm 14 years old and I want to learn sign language. I feel like I want to communicate/talk with others who's deaf. I want to learn sign language toobecause I have a new friend and he's deaf. Love your videos.
A long time ago we had an uncle in the family that was deaf-mute. He spent his school years in Jacksonville Illinois. Me and a few other cousins were taken on adventures under the care of our uncle Donny, camping, fishing and boating. We had a large family and most could communicate with Donny to one degree or another. The last of his life he lived in the St Paul Minnesota area and was teaching Vietnamese refugees ASL that needed it. He passed many years ago. I learned a lot from Donny, especially patience and how to be a good person. I enjoy watching these videos, they bring back memories. I know the alphabet very well the other stuff not as much. The main thing I remember when he taught me sign was how exacting to be .
Awesome going to review all three again. Please make a test video. Where one can watch you ask and we write the answer on paper. That would greatly assist me and hope others. Once again thank you.
I am trying to learn sign language, but I see different people doing slightly different shapes/gestures for the same words as others. I keep getting so confused lol
Hilarious fD No offense, but that is easy to tell apart. The number 2 is ALWAYS supposed to be facing you. And the letter V is ALWAYS supposed to be facing the person you are talking to☺
I've been trying to learn ASL for a long time now, and I have to day, you are the only person who I can actually understand. I love how you make sure your audience understands what each individual sign means in phrases.
I am now a private care giver to a deaf man. I am learning ASL to communicate with him rather than writing everything out. These videos are great help. Thank you.
I love your videos so much! There have been some deaf kids joining my school and I felt kinda bad cause no kid at my school knows sign. So although I'm only 13, I am trying to learn sign to talk to some of the kids and your videos are really helpful! You repeat it just enough, and you aren't too fast like some others so thank you!
Im not deaf, and nobody in my family is deaf (that I know of) but ASL is one of those things you might never know if you need or not. Thats why im trying to learn at least the basics of ASL. And let me tell you, this channel has helped me more than any other one. 10/10 uwu
Hi Ashely...you might not ever read this comment because this video is almost 2 years old but I am going to write it anyway! I teach Kindergarten at a public school in San Diego that has a DHH program. I have worked there for 8 years and have learned some very basic signs. But this year I have 3 deaf students in my class who use an interpreter and my desire to learn ASL has grown because I hate not being able to talk to them myself. I stumbled upon your videos after doing a youtube search for ASL Lessons. I just wanted to tell you that your videos are the best and I have loved learning sign from you. I also watched the interviews with your sisters and parents. What an awesome family. It sounds like you were raised in San Diego as well. Thank you for posting these videos, I wish there were more than 3 episodes, I have learned so much already.
Hi! I'm an occupational therapy student! I just want to say that I love your videos! I am three weeks away before I start my fieldwork rotations in a pediatric clinic. I am trying to learn the basics before I start and your videos have been the best so far! If you could make a video for pediatric therapists would be awesome! especially for those working with children! It would definitely help US A LOT!
I know you posted this video about a year and a half ago, but I’d like to thank you for what you’re doing. I’m the next generation and I’m greatly appreciating how much you are teaching my friends and I. We love learning sign language and you’ve helped us so much! Though we have no important reason (we mostly just want to learn it for the fun and the fact that we’d be able to communicate silently), it’s still amazing to be able to so easily learn it! Thank you so much again!
I rallye appreciate that you take the time to do side views and especially the explanations of what the hand shape is using basic letters and numbers hand shapes. There are many instructional videos out there on basic ASL signing, but so often it's just not clear what exactly the hand shape is supposed to look like since the front view blocks parts of it. It's also been helpful to realize that a lot of the signs build on the basic alphabet and numbers, makes it less overwhelming when trying to figure out if my fingers are correctly positioned.
Girl I love how you're making videos to help people understand sign language. It truly is amazing to know how to speak it especially for me, because even though I can speak, certain medications that I have to take sometimes make me unable to talk for about a week. With these videos I can show my friends and they can understand me and translate for me. Thank you Ashley for your hard work and effort into making these videos! And I love your hair by the way! 💜
I'm not deaf, but I'm looking forward to learning sign language to be able to communicate with deaf people! You really helped me learn a lot! Thank you!
Great stuff. With a lot of practice I might get good at this. I really want to learn since not knowing sign put an end to a good friendship. Signers and nonsigners don't mix. And also, I look at sign as a form of Art. Beauty in motion.
I am trying to learn ASL because there are some deaf kids in my school that seem lonely sometimes so I thought, "hey, why not try to learn some sign language and talk to them?" So that's what I am doing. Thank you for making such easy to follow videos 💕 keep it up!
I love your videos ❤️ I am a nursing student and that's why I am learning ASL. Maybe you could do a health related ASL video in the future, it would be very helpful.
I'm studying in a special high school (currently grade 10) and Teacher's Day is approaching. To give the teachers a break, grade 10 students were asked to substitute and I was assigned as one of the teachers who teaches deaf students. The teacher said we could just right what we want to say on the board but as I got to be with them (students) they seemed excited and happy and I wondered why.And I thought "Maybe because this is the time they get to interact with someone who is not deaf." And at that realization, I wanted to learn ASL.And now I'm here. 😊😊
i have never met a deaf person or anyone who knows or use sign language, but i just decided one day that i want to learn it. i just wish i knew someone who uses sign language so i could practice
I learned recently that in college my mom had a deaf/hard of hearing friend and learned PSE(I think that's the type) and interpreted for her sometimes so I've decided to learn ASL
just found your channel and am sharing with friends. 3 other new people subscribed- i can't imagine a world in COMPLETE silence! let's make it #2 language spoken! no one deserves to be lonely/isolated!
i love how you take your time to really show us how to sign each word because i am learning and some people just rush through their lessons so i really appreciate it. Please do more videos because they are so helpful! Thank you!
I love your videos. They are great, I'm learning ASL on my own right now. I encountered a couple at walmart trying to communicate with me using ASL and I felt like a horrible community member for not being able to converse with them. You have helped me so much thank you!
So it's 1:30am in the morning, and i desided to learn a little bit of sign. And now i even know how to spell my own country. Denmark! I love learning this, and you're super easy to understand. Thank you
You are the kind of person I wish I had in my life to learn A.S.L. from. Reading the ASL Dictionary 3 times cover to cover just doesn't do it and I don't know anybody who is deaf or hard of hearing that uses ASL to learn more from. my grandfather was near deaf but he liked not hearing my grandmother too much to even think about learning ASL... Good Day & God Bless...
Hi Ashley. This video is excellent. Probably one of the best for signing that I have seen on UA-cam. To almost a complete beginner like myself, I appreciate the showing of the sign with explanations of the sign as well as explanations to some of the nuances of the signs. I would really enjoy seeing more of these in the future. Great channel. Thank you for teaching us.

Does the order of the signs matter? I'm hearing, so my instinct is to follow spoken English patterns and ask, for example "where" "you" "work", but you sign it "you work where". Is the order stylistic, or will I actually be confusing to deaf people if I follow a spoken English grammar pattern?
JuliannaJaynne Yes, the order is important. It is in the order of Object, Subject, then verb. So it would be, in ASL: You, work, where, or just, Work, where? ( while making the signs, in their direction) . You have your eyebrows lowered and your facial expression is like you are confused, to better convey the message, of this type of questions.
Dont fallow this woman ur absolutely right. Their is a,sign for every word. She dont do them,in the proper way nore sign half them the right way. Its like American English we talk in every word thats how it is suposed to be signed. Not backwords or missing words
@@corinalowell184 on case you didn't know, she's actually deaf so the way she signs is how she has conversations, it doesn't matter if they're words missing because 1.the point still gets across and 2.This tutorial is meant for beginners anyway.
@@gachajames5481 depends how deaf the person is. I'm HOH/partially deaf. Been getting worse over time and sometimes I can't hear the door bell or some noises. We can hear loud noises but it really depends on the HOH person. I'm struggling with speech hearing...
I wanted to learn sign to talk slintly but it really helped me lean to talk when I don't want to talk so thank you for making these vids and plz keep making more
Hi! Im hearing and I just made new friends which are deaf. now Im learning how to sign so I can communicate with them more. I really love your video tutorials. I learned a lot. hoping you to upload more of sign language tutorials. Good luck. Thank you! :)
Aw, thank you for your comment! So glad you love!! I'm planning on filming UA-cam videos more regularly- so stay tuned!! :) Meanwhile, if you're on Instagram too, be sure to join us on there too!! :D
I love your videos. The signs you group together are logical, your slow motion during the video and side views help as we follow along to practice the sign ourselves. And I love how to taught us to use 'settings' to slow the video down even more... Plus there is no sound, keeping the video authentic! your a great teacher Ashley!
I very much so appreciative these videos. I'm on about 2 months of learning from this channel and a few others. I'm learning just to learn. They should have more people that can communicate with them.
This is so helpful. Thank you. I think signing is something that more people need to know. I am not deaf but I think that knowing how to sign is important.
Thank you so much for all these videos you've been making. They're helping me a lot and i'm improving my ASL fastly and extraordinarily. Keep teaching us!
I love your videos! My friends wife is deaf and I am learning to communicate with her better and because I would love to be able to communicate with all deaf/hard of hearing people!
Im trying to get back into signing to broaden my horizons and hopefully communicate with my cousins more efficiently amd your a huge help with that thank you.
I'm learning ASL for one of my students! Believe it or not, English is her THIRD language (behind ASL and Cambodian). She has an interpreter in my classroom, but I want to be able to communicate with her and learn how to speak her language for once. Thank you for the videos!!!
These videos are amazing and help so much. I’ve always been so interested in the deaf culture and I’ve always been so confused when people sign. I now know some sign thanks to your help. I’m going into middle school and if someone deaf comes in, I would like to be their friend 😊 so thank you so much for these videos. You earned a new subscriber 😊💖
I’m trying to learn sign language because I’ve met quite a few people at my school who can’t hear very well and would like to communicate with them thanks for your videos! :))
I've just discovered your videos (I know I'm a year late), but I'm really enjoying learning. My family is proud of me for learning fast. and it's all thanks to your videos. The first video only took a couple days to master and it was thanks to your great teaching skills. Thank you very much ^-^ I am not deaf myself but I want to be a police officer and believe it would be great to be able to communicate with deaf or hard of hearing people, seeing as most people chose Spanish as a secound language. Thank you again
Thank you for doing this video. Youre helping me and a lot of people out there to learn sign language. I am not deaf or mute but i will try to the best of my ability to absorb everything about this wonderful communication just in case i'll meet someone who needs some help. Thank you again :)
rhythm dewani different places have different sign language used like for America, they call it ASL then for UK, they call it BSL. Formulating these actions depend merely on how easy the conveyance of message should be. You really can't generalize or set a world standard since each places have different culture. This what makes it unique. And i hope you know this that English is considered the universal language but that doesn't mean that one should forget her/his own mother tongue.

Sing language doesn't have grammar, you can just sign in any order.

Simply wonderful! The combination of real-time, slow-mo, and repetition is perfect!!
I'm beginning to learn sign language.. my son is a nonverbal autistic angel and we have to communicate somehow 😍 we are hoping for the best as he started with (i want again) 😍
Thanks for the video.. I appreciate it 🙏
Love
I love the side view and especially the slow motion- it is the same speed as my signing so it is perfect! I will practice speed- I promise! Thanks for your help. You are really special, Ashley.
I'm so happy you are making more videos!!! I LOVE THEM!!!
Martin Dimitrov me too they’re the best! The multiple views, slowed down, etc really help
Love you 😁💕💕
ok
The main thing I remember when he taught me sign was how exacting to be
.
Also when you repeat the same sign over and over again it helps me remember it better
Make sure it's ASL (British Sign Language is different than American), but also regional dialects exists in ASL
you can learn from this lady. she is right on the money. Rochelle is not that good and is not deaf.
Hilarious fD No offense, but that is easy to tell apart. The number 2 is ALWAYS supposed to be facing you. And the letter V is ALWAYS supposed to be facing the person you are talking to☺
I watch a few different teachers, including Rochelle, and I like all of them for different reasons.
same
I've been trying to learn ASL for a long time now, and I have to day, you are the only person who I can actually understand.
I don't know about you learning sign language is fun and it's a fun language
I start for the fun now i am big man in the bar people coming special
I do it because I may become a sign language teacher when I grow up.
I also find it fun, but also very serious.
A random comment.
Hi Ashley. I like your vids the most as you don t overwhelm us with too many signs per lesson
THIS IS SUCH A COOL LANGUAGE!!!!! Please make this an ongoing series!
I'm not deaf, but I'm looking forward to learning sign language to be able to communicate with deaf people! You really helped me learn a lot! Thank you!
Please do more videos! I love them and want to learn asl soooo bad
These are awesome! I'd love to see some for retail workers, such as "can I help you" or "what are you looking for?"
I love your videos ❤️ I am a nursing student and that's why I am learning ASL. Maybe you could do a health related ASL video in the future, it would be very helpful.
Yes, I am in medical school and would love to learn for my future patients!
I just found you and am so grateful for your videos. I love how you show various angles of the signs and show them in slow motion. God bless you!
I love these videos. It's so good to have repetition and slowing down so people can learn the signs. Thank you
I'm studying in a special high school (currently grade 10) and Teacher's Day is approaching. 😊😊
i have never met a deaf person or anyone who knows or use sign language, but i just decided one day that i want to learn it. i just wish i knew someone who uses sign language so i could practice
i am 4 weeks into learning ASL and your videos are so helpful. Thank you so much!
You have helped me so much thank you!
much better than last episode, I enjoy the side view and the recaps. Thx Ashley.

I'm taking an ASL class at a college, but not for credit. Your channel as really helped improve what I've learned. Thank you so much
Still the best sign instruction vid series I've seen. We need a part 10... and the rest of the in between please.
@@Mokume7 ah thank you. I was never taught that
@@Jordan-hs1xi Actually, it can be in the subject-verb-object word order. It's acceptable both ways
Please, upload more videos!! You're an amazing teacher.
I am HOH or partially deaf. I know its time I learn. I can still hear but should my issues ever progress I want to be able to communicate.
Love, I have a question. Us everything quiet for you, but you can still hear? Cause that is me and I don't understand at all
Me too!
Me too!!!
@@gachajames5481 depends how deaf the person is. I'm HOH/partially deaf. Been getting worse over time and sometimes I can't hear the door bell or some noises. We can hear loud noises but it really depends on the HOH person. I'm struggling with speech hearing...
Please do more of these! I love learning from your videos!
This is really cool!! Not gonna lie, inspired to learn from watching Switched At Birth
Alicia Hernandez same here!
I am so in love with Ashley... she has such a warm personality and the kindest eyes
So superb in your presentation. The slow motion is genius to help us follow better. The repetition at a slower pace really helps! Thank you!!
i took sign language for 5 years in elementary school. i sadly don’t remember much other than a few basic things. these videos are really helpful!
Your teaching style is so perfect. You have visual and verbal, you slow it down for us and also keep real time. So thankful for you! :)
Good luck. Thank you! :)
I love the format of your videos! It's so helpful. Thank you!
Looking forward to your other videos but already wishing you had more.
Keep teaching us!
you're the best sign teacher in the whole wide world!!!
Just learning ASL. LOVE your videos! Repetition of the commonly used words is exactly what I was looking for!
Thank you for making these ASL for beginners it has really helped my ASL improve!
Im So happy that i Could learn this basic Signs. It was a pleasure. Not hard at all to remember
You are the only person on this website that I like to learn from
I’m trying to learn sign language because I’ve met quite a few people at my school who can’t hear very well and would like to communicate with them thanks for your videos! :))
This is really helpful! There is a deaf customer where I work and I wanted to learn some sign so it would be easier for him
I’m learning so much from your videos! I hope you will keep teaching us more sign. Thank you!
You have helped me learn so much already and I only have watch 3 of your videos. I hope you have a great day.
Man I already learned all of the three videos. Took time but I am so excited to keep learning
I'm trying to learn sign language and this has really helped thank you for helping me on my journey to learn sign language
this signing video really helped me communicate with deaf people. thank you
Thank you for doing this video. Youre helping me and a lot of people out there to learn sign language. I am not deaf or mute but i will try to the best of my ability to absorb everything about this wonderful communication just in case i'll meet someone who needs some help. Thank you again :)
xent smith how is ASL different from other English signing?if there is no difference then shouldn't we call it ESL..!?
rhythm dewani different places have different sign language used like for America, they call it ASL then for UK, they call it BSL. Formulating these actions depend merely on how easy the conveyance of message should be. You really can't generalize or set a world standard since each places have different culture. This what makes it unique. And i hope you know this that English is considered the universal language but that doesn't mean that one should forget her/his own mother tongue.
So proud of you for doing these beginner videos!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
