I'm a hearing person and seriously though signs are an important form of communication for people with certain disabilities it's just beautiful to me, a person who has no such impediments as to hearing or talking seeing those rapid hand movements forming shapes and words... Just seeing people signing like that and wanting to know just what are they saying, it intrigues me. Their psychology, their everyday lives all that just spikes up my curiosity that's why I wanted to learn sign language' And seriously I've only seen only two of your videos so far Mr Bill and I'm already starting to understand and properly learn sign! Thank you for posting these video it's very helpful and educative! :)
It could also help to practice each session when you finish it and review previous ones at the same time. Perhaps make flash cards with all the signs you've learned, then after each lesson, add to them and give yourself a mini quiz.
I can just imagine excitedly trying to tell your family that you're getting married, but instead excitedly telling them that you're buying a hamburger.
Hi Bill. I am a teacher of English in a public high-school in Antofagasta, Chile. I have 5 students with hearing loss since March,.Finding your videos has been awesome to me, now I have a tool to teach them English. They do not have it in their school program but they are eager to learn.
, according to what I have seen different Spanish country are different some rarely are the same, ex: Puerto Rico and USA almost the same- sometimes PR sign for water is letter A for agua (water) instead of W, but Honduras is different they sign the word caress differently on the cheek for us in USA means whore, so Spanish sign is different. I thought international sign language would help but it doesn't.
I am half deaf and continue to loose my hearing. I was lucky enough to bump into someone who is fully deaf who taught me a lot of ASL before we moved to seperate states. Now I see how ignoreant the world is to deaf people, like when I saw a cashier screaming at the top of her lungs to a man who obviously didn't hear her. I had to step in and now starting to offer sign language lessons for those in my hometown who don't know it for we have several adults who are deaf in my city along with children whom cannot communicate.
Lisa, -- Great comment. Very in-depth. Thanks for sharing. A bit of homework for you. At your convenience please read: www.nad.org/resources/american-sign-language/community-and-culture-frequently-asked-questions/
Courtnie Lynn Harrison, 28, of Paris, Illinois and formerly of Clinton and Rosedale, passed away Thursday, September 6, 2018, in northern Vigo County from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Services were held today, Wednesday, September 12 at Cottrell-Gooch Funeral Home in Rosedale with Pastor John O’Neal officiating. Burial followed at Rosedale Cemetery.
Courtnie Harrison Today there was a deaf couple who came in to order food. I don’t know sign language so I went and got a paper so we could communicate through writing. I felt bad and I learned how to say “thank you” and “good night” in sign language. Now I’m here trying to learn more.
Nice! I am losing my hearing also. I've dabbled with sign language all my life, but I need to really get on the ball and go full force with it as do my family and friends; I miss out on most of life because people don't realize how much I am not hearing, and don't remember to make sure I am keeping up with the conversations. Frustrating, for sure! But of course, even WITH sign language, I'll still be saying, "What? What's that you say? Can you repeat that?" Because signing is done so quickly, and my eyes are not fast enough. Haha. Sighhh.
hypoeddy thanks for the support, but her friends were really mean and saying to her i wanted to be her GF, which I didn't, so I'm just ignoring her now... Not in the rude way though, just not hanging around her.
Hope you didn't get them get to you my friend, I'm sure he appreciated it but teenagers are mean sometimes or they just had the wrong assumption about you. I hope you continued to learn ASL so you can keep in touch later on and show them wrong :)
I love how you show not only multiple ways of signing a word, but also the different angles of the sign. This definitely made learning much easier, thank you!
One of my friends has a deaf daughter and it troubled me that I cannot communicate with her, therefore I'm determined to learn asl. I'm already on my way to learning, I know I must take my time but I can't learn fast enough. Thank you for the videos
sasmorelage You're doing a really good thing. A lot of parents don't even learn ASL for their deaf kids and you're learning for your friend's daughter! Congrats on being a good human being :D
For those like me who struggle with the speed of the videos. There is a feature in You tube where you can slow down the videos to as slow as 1/4 speed. For me it is the only way to keep up. By the way Dr. Vicars.... I think you are hilarious , have great humor and a very good teacher. I am a hearing person but my son's friend has deaf parents and they are very nice people. After watching your videos I was able to have my first conversation and it went great.....So excited to learn more....thank you
I have a deaf teenager attending ISD we all-Dad, mom, and her brothers- sign with her, even though she is verbal AND bilaterally aided. We have always encouraged her to sign and communicate with others based on how she feels comfortable. Thank you for making this approachable for so many people. Wish I'd found you years ago.
Shush Ackles same here, she came up and had it on her phone and at the end she was signing something, it looked to me like 'thank you' and I felt bad for not knowing how to sign 'youre welcome' a lot of people that come to my restaurant are deaf and I feel bad every single for time.
I started learning ASL about a year ago using the interntet. When I started I viewed this video and knew 0 of the signs; I got bored within a minute. Now here I am a year later, and I could sign every single word in this video. It really helped me learn, and show how much progress I've made.
I work at an amusement park every summer and have to instruct ride safety to deaf people on certain rides occasionally but I only knew like 2 signs! your channel is actually really helpful with making it easier to communicate, so thank you!
i have an aunt who is blind and deaf, these videos are helping me communicate with her. i used your site to have a small conversation with her, but these are going to help me communicate with her even better, thank you!
I love the way you gradually build up your students' understanding of signs through repetition in this way. I've been learning quite a bit from you as well. Thank you!
Bill you are the Bomb. My son has autism and has been non verbal since almost 2yrs old right after we learned clap your hands nursery rhyme he stop talking. I have been desperately trying to get sign language and an ipad for this. No support and all i have gotten are NO'S from the Palm Beach County School District leaders who are supposed to support early child education for children and parents. But i will never give up on my son. Bill you rock!!😙💞
Dr. Bill, I was in the Orlando airport recently and saw a man signing. After I got his attention, I told him I was learning ASL. I was then able to carry on a conversation with him. It was so exciting and the first time I was able to use ASL in a conversation with a deaf person. All my ASL knowledge is from your videos so thank you so much for posting these!
My cousin recently got into a terrible car accident and lost all his hearing. Before this his was an ASL instructor at church so he already knew ASL. But after watching this video I can communicate with my closest cousin and friend. Thank you so much for making me understand ASL and have a conversation with my cousin,it helped a bunch!☺️👍

I am partially deaf, and though it is most likely I will not continue to loose my hearing, it terrifies me. I am determined to learn just in case. Your lessons really helped when my parents thought it was useless to take actual classes. Thank you for being such an amazing teacher.
Im learning ASL because My little brother is half deaf and we prefer sign language because he screams when he talks because he cant really hear himself. Also because I grew up with ASL and I love teaching my friends at school! ASL is such a beautiful language!! Thanks, your videos really help me learn new words that I didnt already know!!
I cant believe that was two years ago! Well, little update my brother has hearing aids so we dont use asl much anymore but I hope it will become helpful for future jobs :D
I work in a Hospital and I have found over the last year that we have a large deaf community that we serve, and I love watching and learning with these videos. I am hoping to find a class locally to join at some point, but for now these videos do a great job at getting me started.
I work in a nursing home I have a patient born Deaf, and no one can really communicate to/with her. I have made it my personal mission to learn as much as possible. Because I, myself am slowly going deaf. I have learned so much from you! I have tried the books and it just sometimes doesn't translate well enough on hand form and expression. I still have a lot more to learn, as I'm just now starting to form basic sentence structures. For the time being, I'm concentrating on basic needs for my patient and working from there.. Thanks, and keep them coming, you're a great teacher..
I'm autistic . So i get (or got in my case) to go to a work program for vocational rehab people. From there i worked with people who are deaf. They inspired me to learn sign language. So here I am :3 .
I have been learning ask for a few weeks now I can actually communicate with the dead guys at my work. Nobody talks to these guys but they also teach me signs for things. Bill you seem like a very good teacher I would love to meet you.
Jodysin7, Your typo is classic! (Ah the joys of auto-correct and typing with our thumbs eh?) I instantly visualized a séance. You mind asking those "dead guys" how Elvis is doing? (Thanks for the compliment though.) - Dr. Bill
Bill you are a blessing. I've been serving a deaf guy in my place of work and the struggle he had expressing himself has made me come here...for his sake I will learn sign language and give him the best customer service. God bless you so much
Nancy, Here are some good videos for customer service situations, see: ua-cam.com/video/Vin-kHK2BMo/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/QnpIO4t5QJg/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/F_Je6OOp02Y/v-deo.html Plus maybe this one: ua-cam.com/video/fm-e4xV64ws/v-deo.html
As I am in school studying to, hopefully, be a physical therapist one day I got the Idea to learn sign language, since I think that it's not a language many people know. Even tho my hearing is completely "average" I want to learn. I think comunication is everything in life and as this is a language not many people know, It can make someone's day if you can communicate through it, which means a lot. I thank you for your being an amyzing teacher.
Wonderful. Been trying to teach myself some ASL on the sides (as a way to pass the time before my summer lesson starts) and videos like these are super helpful. ASL should be taught at schools instead of other foreign languages, since they may (or may not) be far away, whereas people who sign are right next to us!
SilverScreenJean Tip: Try going to my website (google: Lifeprint ASL) and study the lessons using the individual vocabulary links first and then watch the video afterward.
SilverScreenJean If you're using the HTML5 player, you can change the playback speed to half or quarter speed if you need to as well. Although ASL University is pretty great.
Thx for the tip James! The embarrassing part for me is that I do learn easily but I am a bit wary about learning sign language. You see, I actually am HOH and think I will not succeed at it- FOR THAT VERY REASON. I know- what an ironic thing to say or think! :-) I was discovered to have a mild to mod loss at age 5 & learned to get along with & without hearing aids. My diction has always been very good, so many people were not aware I was a HOH person. But learning ASL? Definitely insecure about it.
Thanks for posting this video. I can from a show called Switched at birth where everybody was signing. My dream is to teach at a deaf school. I found this very helpful so thanks. I am gonna show my mom what I have learned from this. So, this was helpful. Vey helpful thanks again!
Switched At Birth is an American TV show about two girls who were, well, switched at birth at the hospital and they eventually meet in their teens. One of them is deaf and basically there's a lot of ASL in that show.
My dad bought me an intro to learn ASL and I've never been able to understand most of it since it wasn't very clear so thank you for making this video. :)
I ,amazingally, learnd all of them during the video without having to repeat it....wow you are a great teacher. Thank you very much. I still can't believe i did it xD English is like my thrid language and i really don't know anyone who speaks sign language in Morocco. Even if they did, they won't understand me because it's a.s.l Oh well. You never know when you need it. Thanks again
These videos are so helpful! I took ASL for 2 years in college and now, 6 years later, trying to get back into it. Thank you for these videos that are so freely accessible to all.
Dr. Bill you are the only non pre pubescent female that has a tutorial on YT. I work with several deaf guys at a package distribution center in wherever and It's be nice to chew the fat in silent mode. Ty
Im really glad you have taken the time to share with us, I have been able to communicate with deaf persons because of your site..... I have also made my children log on so when we are in class we are able to practice with each other
I really want to learn this ever since Tyler Oakley brought up Nyle DiMarco's campaign, it's so inspirational. Thank you for the video, it's so helpful!
I just went through this video with a deaf kid I met; I have never been able to speak to him before, but now we have some basic communications and it's amazing!
after taking as ASL course in college a year ago I found that I was starting to forget my signs but watching this video brought it all back and taught me a couple new ones.
I know you do a lot for free, but cannot stress enough helpful your vids have been for me. I just purchased your full set and dont know if I could pass my 3rd asl course without your help. So please keep it up. Btw even my instructors have your vids saved for instructional purposes in my college classes.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. my son is so excited to learn sign language. this is such a big help to him. you have such a wonderful personality. subscribed!
This has been like a much needed refresher course. My mom taught me ASL when I was 4 years old. I still remember a lot but I forgot most. I'm now a waitress and I have a lot of deaf customers. I'm also mostly deaf myself now so thank you for the help. 👍😄
I’m about to turn 13 and I have just been told I have hearing loss in one ear. I’ve been wanting to learn ASL for a while, so, now is as good a time as any. Thank you, Bill
Hi Bill, thank you for posting this! It's really interesting for me because I live in Belgium (Europe) and I am learning French-speaking Belgian Sign Language (which is totally different from ASL and even from French Sign Language!). This video is a really nice opportunity for me to learn some basic signs in ASL in order to prevent misunderstandings when travelling... For example, your sign for "school" means "printing"/"newspaper" over here, and your sign for "day" (with the index finger pointing) means "border" :-D Funny, eh?
For awhile now I've wanted to learn sign language. It's not offered in my school though :( I'm going to try to learn it on my own however even though I know it's going to take a long time
2 years? Takes a lot less than that! As long as you're willing to put in the hard work and dedication it shouldn't take 2 years. Work at it every single day!
Dr. Bill... Thank you SO much for this!! I took ASL a LONG time ago but didn't have anyone to sign to. I'm a nurse and just started working with some deaf kids and I'm so excited to be learning ASL again!!! Thank you for taking the time and doing these videos!! :)
I've been doing Lifeprint lessons whenever I have time, and I try to repeat them as often as I can, too - I find that repeating a lesson at least 2-3 times helps make it "stick." I have learned so much in such a short amount of time - thank you, Dr. Bill!
Eh? The students (and there are quite a few students off-camera that you can't see) in the class are wearing clothing typical of college students in California during the warmer months.
Me again, I also appreciate that you wear clothes conducive to see your hands clearly. No visual interruptions or blocks from clearly seeing your hands. I want to return to the two other languages used in my childhood home - Sign and Spanish.
thank you for posting this video. i'm trying to lear ASL after viewing a show called Switched at Birth, where several characters are either deaf or hard of hearing. btw...what are the preferred terms to use to be polite and caring? i spent 14 day with a new friend that has been deaf since birth, and coincidentally with another new friend who's husband is an ENT specialist who's practice is surgically adding cochlear implants. none of knew each other until we all meet to ride & camp together at burning man in 2015. we used little notepads & pencils to communicate, then adding some sign language. a wonderful learning experience for the 3 of us!
The term "Deaf" (capitalized) is indeed the current preferred term for culturally Deaf members of the "Deaf Community." Often you will see the phrase "Deaf and Hard of Hearing." That is good to use at least once near the beginning of an article regarding Deaf people in general. The term "hearing impaired" is NOT good to use any more and has been rejected by the Deaf Community. Many traditional writing "style" guides have not caught up to the advances in terminology usage so if you are going to use the capitalized "Deaf" in your writing of academic papers you may wish to include an "author's note" in which you explain your use of Deaf-related terminology.
I am not deaf but i still want to learn asl...I don't know why but I am sure its something for future...i know i am going to meet someone...and i know asl will help me a lot in future....
Dr. Bill is exciting to watch and learn from. I love it when he bring someone on his show that is just learning sign language and makes its fun while learning. His face expression is awesome, i hope one day when i get to his level of signing i can have his enthusiasm he brings on his Dr. Bill show..
Dr. Bill, just want to say thank you. I'm an ASL student in college and these videos along with your website have helped me tremendously through my time studying ASL. Very much appreciate.
its kind of confusing because they sign to each other and i can never tell if its part of the word or something else. also they go really fast and i am just a small... otherwise very good!
I love that he added "I love my family at the end" just to finish the video on a positive note. I'm so glad I'm learning asl its bringing me so much fulfillment

This is an awesome video! I am currently an ASL1 student and this video has helped me a great deal!!! Do you have a video for numbers? ***Subscribed!!!***
+Patricia Young-Set Check out my "numbers page" at: lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/numbersdiscussion.htm After learning your numbers you might want to check out my practice page at www.asl.bz - Dr. Bill
+Bruna Chaves "Excuse" and "forgive" are very similar signs. If you use a single, strong movement it can mean "laid off" (of work), or "released" (from obligation or expectation). When you have questions about individual signs I recommend you try looking those signs up at my website, Lifeprint.com and seeing if I've got a page on them. For example: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/f/forgive.htm
+Bill Vicars Hey I need to know if this sigh Language really accurate because use other website and when I learn it and talk to my friends they don't understand me. So I just want to know this the right website to learn ASL, please.
+Lochmock I'm currently taking sign language second year and now teaching my homeschooling my children. Bill's ASL is quite accurate though it does reflect, as any language would, some regional preference. I am in Michigan and while his preferences show a FEW different signs than I would use, he does take the time to teach the available options. My suggestion is to learn them all. He is your best answer to your question, of course, but I recommend that you use his videos as a follow up to the instruction you are provided. Trust me... every instructor is different and what works for one may not for others. Use your book and learning materials as assigned if you're taking a course. What's vital here is facial expression and form. Make sure that any other vid you may watch is actually ASL and not another form as it CAN confuse you. Best of luck on your effort!
Ren Adam I appreciate your reply thanks for all you have given me I'm just wondering because I don't want to get the wrong ASL but of course you're right everyone is different and no I'm not taking no curses hopefully in Fall if I have enough money. How is your ASL going?
When I was working two jobs, I came in counter with two separate deaf women in one week. One at one job, the other at the other job. On the appointment paper, we were instructed to use sign language...which I don't know. I decided to take up sign language, which will benefit me in the healthcare field, anyways! I plan on actually taking this next semester, but in the mean time, it doesn't hurt to teach yourself! So thank you very much!
Hi Bill! I am a student at my local University where I am studying to become an Elementary Teacher! I took two ASL classes at the local community college before transferring over, and am very ashamed to admit that I have forgotten some of the ASL that I loved learning. No excuses; I should have kept up on it. I will be continuing to watch your videos so I can become familiar again with ASL. Anyway, I want to thank for having this channel, and I look forward to re-learning a language that I absolutely love! Stay safe my friend :)
+Elizabeth Blackmore Decide on which hand to use as your dominant hand, (usually the hand you eat and write with) and then do your signs with your dominant hand as the one that does the movement (for signs in which only one hand is moving). If you are right-handed then you should move your right hand the same way I move my right hand since I'm right handed. - Dr. Bill
+Bill Vicars What do I do if I'm ambidextrous? I noticed that I don't always use the same hand for a sign, usually with one-handed signs. Is this a problem?
Which hand do you use to write? I use both hands also to do different tasks but I would think that if you're ambidextrous, you should use your right hand as your dominant hand for signing and stick with that for every sign you do.
Great video!!! I'm a teacher of 2 year olds and they know about 60% of these signs. We work on them everyday and I encourage them to use them throughout the day. It's so cute that sometimes I can just sign and they know what I'm saying.
I can't thank you enough for your wonderful instruction! You are a great teacher! You show the signs clearing and help clear up the little mistakes I was making. I am so grateful for your service offering these videos to the community. I am losing my hearing and its scary, but learning asl has helped me not fear losing my voice!
Always wanted to learn. 20 Years later Switched At Birth reminded me. Question? On the show they cross their arms across their chests for love. I always thought it was the thumb, pointer and baby finger????
+Wendy Lurie The sign for LOVE (arms folded across your chest with fist handshapes) is a more serious and meaningful version of "love." than the acronym ILY sign. The ILY sign is more like something you would wave at a parade or do to your friends. The LOVE sign is something you'd do to your child, significant other, or parent when you wanted them to know you really love and care about them. Sure, we also flash the ILY sign at our kids, parents, and significant others but the ILY sign is more of a lighthearted way to say "luv ya" (rather than "I love you!").
I've been wanting to study American Sign Language for about 7 years now, I finally found your website which lead me to your UA-cam page! Thank you so much! Wish me luck!
i have a question: does the meaning change of any or some signs if they are done with the left hand, because i am left handed and it feels awkward to sign with my right?
+CAMIVbear I'm left handed also, thank you for asking that question. But like Guitar, i learned right handed, so i unconsciously started teaching myself (i don't know much ASL, which is why i'm here) to do it right handed
Is there a place to go for "standard" signs other than the ones on your Site? Sometimes I search for a word, can't find it or find many different versions, so I just make one up. Is it better to just spell out words you don't know?
Aly Reed What I mean is I make one up and teach it to the people I'm using it with.It would just be vsrsfg to make up a word and not explain it... (See what I did there? I'm hilarious.)
Question! how relevant is the signs shown in these videos? these videos are from 2013. is that a problem for the changing of the language or is it all just about the same for 2015? how fast does asl change over the years to need updates on correct signs?
Hello :) Look at your own sentence in English. Ask yourself, "Did the words in my English sentence exist in 2013?" Looks to me like every one of the words in your sentence "existed" in 2013 and are still being used in 2015. The signs that tend to change a lot are the newly created signs, technology signs, and "current events." For example, there were MANY versions of the sign for "email" during the decade after email became popular. Over time the sign stabilized and we now generally only see the same few versions. Currently we are seeing quite a bit of change in signs related to social media. When Barack Obama became famous we needed a sign for "Obama." His "namesign" went through quite a few versions and then settled down to one main version (plus those who prefer to spell it). Signs for words like "mom" and "dad" do not change very much because the existing signs work fine and are well established. - Dr. Bill
This is fantastic! I work as a nanny and know a small amount of sign language, so the kids and I are learning together with " Signing time". Twins 1 1/2 and a 3 year old are picking it up so fast! I needed to get ahead of them and this is perfect! I love that it's also silent, I think it helps you focus more and know how it is for a deaf person to sign, which I think is a good experience as you learn to be more fluid and exact with your signs, since that is the way you're communicating. :) thanks so much for putting this up!
I used to know ASL, but after not signing for so long I forgot how. My sister is deaf, and I hate that I don't know how to communicate with her. I haven't seen her in so long, over 10 years and not being able to speak to her hurts. Thanks so much for the videos!!! I'm literally going to watch them every night and just surprise her day by day. Thanks so much!

Professor Vicars, is Katelyn still your aide in videos 16-30 that you have for sale?
Katelyn moved on to nursing school! My ASL 2 (main) model was an awesome young lady named Sarah. I was very fortunate to work with both of them.
Their psychology, their everyday lives all that just spikes up my curiosity that's why I wanted to learn sign language'
And seriously I've only seen only two of your videos so far Mr Bill and I'm already starting to understand and properly learn sign! Thank you for posting these video it's very helpful and educative! :)

There's something beautiful about communicating in silence. Thank you Bill, you're an amazing teacher.
RXVAS she’s actually hearing...he posted a comment saying she was hearing and he was deaf. He was teaching her.
I don't think everyone watching this video can tell if it was silent or not:
@@fayehyuga5259 what do you mean
@@user-ji7hr8yz6g he never said he fell in love with the girl in the video..?
@@eclaire1748 One imagines she might mean some Deaf folk could be watching this video too.
10 times I had to watch this before I could remember all 100 signs. Repetition is key to memorization.
It could also help to practice each session when you finish it and review previous ones at the same time. Perhaps make flash cards with all the signs you've learned, then after each lesson, add to them and give yourself a mini quiz.
How did it go? How's your ASL now? Would you still recommend Dr Bill?
Respect spread the word
too fast

You have all 100 memorized!? Good on you!
I like how close the sign for hamburger is to marriage
I can just imagine excitedly trying to tell your family that you're getting married, but instead excitedly telling them that you're buying a hamburger.
noodleman I mean it’s more or less the same thing. Marriage, hamburger?
To be perfectly honest, I'd prefer a hamburger over marriage anyday
Hamburger is indication of flipping the patty while you are cooking it. Marriage is like two people coming together as one.

Hi Bill. I am a teacher of English in a public high-school in Antofagasta, Chile. I have 5 students with hearing loss since March,.Finding your videos has been awesome to me, now I have a tool to teach them English. They do not have it in their school program but they are eager to learn.
Ingrid,
Best wishes to you. Maybe someday I will make it to Antofagasta for a visit!
If you have a smart phone you could try to learn from the app known as "Marlee Sign". There are free lessons.
I thought that the Spanish sign language was different from ASL? Are you teaching them American sign language instead?
@@tfr8s44 she stated she's an english teacher. 😊
, according to what I have seen different Spanish country are different some rarely are the same, ex: Puerto Rico and USA almost the same- sometimes PR sign for water is letter A for agua (water) instead of W, but Honduras is different they sign the word caress differently on the cheek for us in USA means whore, so Spanish sign is different.

@@sign-language This caught me in shock. Thank you thank you for all you share and taking time to post this. My condolences to the family of Courtnie.
Haha. Sighhh.
this is the best audio quality ive ever heard for youtube

Hope you didn't get them get to you my friend, I'm sure he appreciated it but teenagers are mean sometimes or they just had the wrong assumption about you. I hope you continued to learn ASL so you can keep in touch later on and show them wrong :)
How kind of you ! You will definitely make her day.. Or made I should say!
I love how you show not only multiple ways of signing a word, but also the different angles of the sign. This definitely made learning much easier, thank you!
This teacher seems so sweet and experienced and after watching this I feel even more determined to learn ASL 😼😼😼😼

After watching your videos I was able to have my first conversation and it went great.....So excited to learn more....thank you
I love how you teach the words, and then go over them again before you move on to the next topic! Great video!!!
I feel so bad for trying to turn up the volume for this video....dam i was stupid

+BlackHawkRA oh my god I just turned them on they did nothing 😂 and I tried turning up the volume but I'm deaf so I can't hear anyways 😂(just a joke)

Watching this because a group of deaf kids came to my job to order and wrote it on paper wish I could have signed back a lot of these helped thanks
it is definitely a great skill to have. And it makes them feel really happy even if you try. keep practicing.
If she's blind, how does she see your signs?
Aubren Lewis she doesn't see them. she holds your hands while you sign.
Fact Huh...
she holds your hand to feel what you are saying

I love the way you gradually build up your students' understanding of signs through repetition in this way. I've been learning quite a bit from you as well. Thank you!
Bill you are the Bomb. My son has autism and has been non verbal since almost 2yrs old right after we learned clap your hands nursery rhyme he stop talking. I have been desperately trying to get sign language and an ipad for this. No support and all i have gotten are NO'S from the Palm Beach County School District leaders who are supposed to support early child education for children and parents. But i will never give up on my son. Bill you rock!!😙💞
You sound like a good parent
I'm learning sign language and I appreciate the videos online that help me learn different ways to say many of the same things. Thanks a lot for this!
Dr. Bill,
I was in the Orlando airport recently and saw a man signing.

So here I am :3 .
being able to have inside jokes in ASL is probably one of my favorite things! Especially when building new friendships--its an awesome feeling! :D
I have been learning ask for a few weeks now I can actually communicate with the dead guys at my work. Nobody talks to these guys but they also teach me signs for things. Bill you seem like a very good teacher I would love to meet you.

Really like this but like learning a verbal language, I wish they moved a little slower.
SilverScreenJean
Tip: Try going to my website (google: Lifeprint ASL) and study the lessons using the individual vocabulary links first and then watch the video afterward.
SilverScreenJean you can also click on the gear icon and set the speed to .5 or .25x the actual speeds!
Thx Julia! :-)
Thanks for posting this video. I can from a show called Switched at birth where everybody was signing. My dream is to teach at a deaf school. I found this very helpful so thanks. I am gonna show my mom what I have learned from this. So, this was helpful. Vey helpful thanks again!

I learned quickly because of Sarah haha! She is very beautiful. Great job Dr. Vicar for the lessons and thank you!
For awhile now I've wanted to learn sign language. It's not offered in my school though :( I'm going to try to learn it on my own however even though I know it's going to take a long time
if u practice frequently it can take about 2 years to become fluent

2 years? Takes a lot less than that! As long as you're willing to put in the hard work and dedication it shouldn't take 2 years. Work at it every single day!
Kayla Not two years!! I knew how to sign before I could talk. Fact
I'm learning it by my own for 6 months
Dr.
Bill!
did anyone just realise the girls in the reflection and that he is teaching 3 people?
same. tell me about it
Just watched this video and noticed the same thing. Plus, they're wearing some kind of low-cut dresses. So odd. I don't like it.
Eh? The students (and there are quite a few students off-camera that you can't see) in the class are wearing clothing typical of college students in California during the warmer months.
Bill Vicars I'm just saying that I can see two other people in the reflection of the screen monitor
S he was replying to a different comment regarding the students clothing ;v;
After watching this for 24 minutes I just realized I still have my headphones on...
Thank you so much. This is very helpful, I learned a lot!
I love your video's😎 I'm a caregiver for a deaf girl! 11 years now. I love watching you show the difference in signs! Thank you❤
Me again, I also appreciate that you wear clothes conducive to see your hands clearly.
Im trying to ;earn ASL for the same reason! great show and got me into trying to learn ASL.
samee
Very helpful. I'm trying to teach my fiancė sign (although he's about as able to retain information as a rock is able to spontaneously catch fire)
I've never been more impressed by a simile in my life
I am not deaf but i still want to learn asl...I don't know why but I am sure its something for future...i know i am going to meet someone...and i know asl will help me a lot in future....
Very much appreciate.
its kind of confusing because they sign to each other and i can never tell if its part of the word or something else. also they go really fast and i am just a small... otherwise very good!
if you put the captions on, you can tell the difference.
You can also change the playback speed on youtube to make it slower! :)
Love the guy makes it fun
who else had this video on full volume thinkin they wete gonna hear something
SitDown&WatchIT me
people of hearing be like:
Me lol
@@xannderexx XD
I love that he added "I love my family at the end" just to finish the video on a positive note. I'm so glad I'm learning asl its bringing me so much fulfillment
Thanks Stuart!

- Dr. Bill
+Bill Vicars Thank you :) Happy Thanksgiving to you & yours! From me & mine!
Hi Bill. Is the sign for "excuse" the same as the one we use for "forgive"? And thank for the video, it's really helpful ♥
Bill Vicars Hi! Will you be my mentor? I am fascinated by how you sign...so fluently. I love SIGN LANGUAGE.
How is your ASL going?
this girl kind of looks like Daphne from switched at birth
Brianna Barnes I thought it was her at first but then I noticed she didn't have freckles and not the same mouth 🙀
I ABSOLUTLEY LOVE THAT SHOW!!!!!!!
I am the only person i know that watches it.
I was thinking that too
She looks nothing like daphne
Stay safe my friend :)
loved it :D
I learned it all !!!
is this a mirror? like do i act like the video is my reflection to copy the signs or do i have to flip the actions when i do them?
+Elizabeth Blackmore Decide on which hand to use as your dominant hand, (usually the hand you eat and write with) and then do your signs with your dominant hand as the one that does the movement (for signs in which only one hand is moving). If you are right-handed then you should move your right hand the same way I move my right hand since I'm right handed.
- Dr. Bill
+Bill Vicars thank you
+Bill Vicars What do I do if I'm ambidextrous? I noticed that I don't always use the same hand for a sign, usually with one-handed signs. Is this a problem?
Which hand do you use to write? I use both hands also to do different tasks but I would think that if you're ambidextrous, you should use your right hand as your dominant hand for signing and stick with that for every sign you do.
You should choose a dominant hand and stick with it.
Thank you so much for this!~
Great video!!!
Thinking of taking a couple ASL courses in college, maybe this can help!
you’re getting a hamburger? no we’re getting married!
Always wanted to learn. 20 Years later Switched At Birth reminded me.
Question? On the show they cross their arms across their chests for love. I always thought it was the thumb, pointer and baby finger????
+Wendy Lurie The sign for LOVE (arms folded across your chest with fist handshapes) is a more
serious and meaningful version of "love." than the acronym ILY sign.
The ILY sign is more like something you would wave at a parade or do to your
friends. The LOVE sign is something you'd do to your child, significant other, or parent when you wanted them to know you really love and care about them.
Sure, we also flash the ILY sign at our kids, parents, and significant others but the ILY sign is more of a lighthearted way to say "luv ya"
(rather than "I love you!").
Thank you Mr. Vicars.
I've been wanting to study American Sign Language for about 7 years now, I finally found your website which lead me to your UA-cam page! Thank you so much! Wish me luck!
His enthusiasm makes this learning experience even better !
i have a question: does the meaning change of any or some signs if they are done with the left hand, because i am left handed and it feels awkward to sign with my right?
CAMIVbear
Lefties should just go ahead and sign left-hand dominant.
It means the same. The important thing is to be consistent.
Thanks
CAMIVbear you use your dominant hand!
+CAMIVbear I'm left handed also, thank you for asking that question. But like Guitar, i learned right handed, so i unconsciously started teaching myself (i don't know much ASL, which is why i'm here) to do it right handed
i am ambidextrous xd i could use both but prefers left to writing
Is there a place to go for "standard" signs other than the ones on your Site? Sometimes I search for a word, can't find it or find many different versions, so I just make one up. Is it better to just spell out words you don't know?
+James Dreger uh, yeah, since no one but you is going to know what the made up sign means. when in doubt, spell it
Aly Reed
What I mean is I make one up and teach it to the people I'm using it with.It would just be vsrsfg to make up a word and not explain it... (See what I did there? I'm hilarious.)
+James Dreger I would ask them what they prefer after spelling it out. Not a good idea to make it up even if it seems like it would work.
Question! how relevant is the signs shown in these videos? these videos are from 2013. is that a problem for the changing of the language or is it all just about the same for 2015?
how fast does asl change over the years to need updates on correct signs?
I would like to know that too.
Hello :)
Look at your own sentence in English. Ask yourself, "Did the words in my English sentence exist in 2013?"
Looks to me like every one of the words in your sentence "existed" in 2013 and are still being used in 2015.
The signs that tend to change a lot are the newly created signs, technology signs, and "current events."
For example, there were MANY versions of the sign for "email" during the decade after email became popular.
- Dr. Bill
Bill Vicars
I see, when you put it like that it make sense. thanks for sharing. ^_^
I would assume they are giving you established words that aren't going to change.
