Just wanna say I appreciate the informative titles. UA-camrs like Rick Shiels are trending towards clickbait thumbnails and titles and it's starting to put me off. Theres definitely a place for that kind of thing, but not for comprehensive product reviews. I don't want to squint at the thumbnail to try and figure out what club they're reviewing. Great content, subbed.
Could not agree more -- no BS here, and really nice mix of the objective numbers and the subjective impressions (looks and feel). I enjoy the other channels but this is the place to come to for sensible and expert reviews without the hyperbole.
absolutely. fully agree. just made a comment on one of these ' this will shock you' titles and i got reply saying 'leave it to me, i'll take the business decisions'. well .... clickbait does not work for me either.
100%
These videos are getting me through the off season getting that much needed golf fix. Thanks gents!
High praise coming from you guys on this one. Great looking irons. Thanks gentlemen
Guys as always thanks for the quality review! Been playing Titleist all my life and recently playing T100s combo with T200 long irons but have struggled with the long irons, they are clicky and sole width kills me on turf interaction. I ordered a set of 225’s yesterday after finding the right shaft, perfect blend of performance, feel and looks.
These fellas are all world class and honesty… love their candid analysis!
I just watched this video after getting a club fit. I'm putting my order in later today with Recoil graphite shafts. I went head to head with the P790s and the tighter dispersion on the 225s was what impressed me. Otherwise I got very similar results in the shot tracker. Thanks for the confidence both of you gave me Matt and Ian. Great channel and content!
Absolutely LOVE how these look!! Pretty much at a point where my irons need updating. Been gaming 718 AP2's for several seasons now. Favorite iron set I've played were Mizuno, blended 6-pw in MP63 & 4-5 in MP53. I want to be open to being performance/results driven when the time comes for being fit,. Brand agnostic and all, but I'm not gonna lie........I hope these are the ones.. Nobody does what TXG does. Ian, Matt and all the folks there, you are second to no one!!
Love your guys’ videos. You guys are as good as it gets on UA-cam.
I swung all the competitors clubs and after narrowing it down to 790, t200, and these 225’s, the 225’s got my $ for all the reasons you mentioned here.
TXG intro music starts, I smile. Wife shakes head and leaves room. Never change, guys. Love your videos!
Oh how pure this comment is…
Unfortunately, they did change
I cannot wait for my fitting in February. These look so good, and more irons to come from all of the other manufacturers.
Fantastic content on the new Mizuno irons I’m very excited about this one I even have a fitting scheduled in February With Mizuno can’t wait.
I love that we have advanced the tech in higher handicap/slower speed guys. These are so awesome!
as a plus 4 player , i just been fit for these and have to admit they are scary good
Best iron that I’ve played. Feel is very soft, plays like a blade yet surprisingly forgiving….LOVE them…
Hoping to get new clubs this Spring and these clubs just jumped to the top of the list! Can’t wait to give them a swing.
Definitely considering adding these to the bag. Have a set of Mizuno's from 2016 and looking to upgrade with some understated technology.
I just did a fitting with my GolfTec coach and was fit into these irons. I was initially interested and planning on purchasing the PING i525 irons, but these were slightly longer and had better forgiveness on my mishits. They feel and sound great and look like a scratch players blades. I am glad I had an open mind and was able to hit a few different irons, (T200 Titleist, Mizuno PRO 225/223, PING i525). My current irons are Callaway Apex 2021 with Elevate 105 stiff shafts and they performed well. The ball speed was 2 mph faster and I was getting about 7-8 more yards carry with Mizuno 225's. I was fit into Modus Pro 105 stiff shafts which felt great and I was familiar with from a previous PXG set. My 7-iron carry was around 173 yds, 5300 spin, 46 deg landing angle, launch around 21 degrees. After seeing Ian and Matts comments regarding these irons, I am super excited to get them in my bag! TXG is the best golf equipment channel on UA-cam, and the detail and knowledge Ian and his crew have is fantastic. Thanks for such great content, hopefully I can come to Toronto sometime and see you guys in person for fitting!
Those SOUND great. Nice soft, firm sound.
Oh my goodness. When you guys cannot find a fault its time to book that fitting in the new year !
Boys. Great series on the new Mizuno irons. I would like to see a comparison between the Mizuno 225, P790 and Sub 70 699 Pro.
Got these into the shop i work in today with the other 2 models, they're awesome
I pay special attention to all the reviews where Ian and Matt are really trying to be critical of golf gear but have a hard time finding words because they don't have anything critical to say. Those moments are so rare (as it should be) and well, that's enough for me to see what the hype is about. I play JPX919s and they check off a lot of boxes for me. Truthfully, I really, really enjoy playing them. I've never considered looking at another set of irons until NOW. Matt and Ian got me all hyped up to try these out. Thanks boys. LOL.
Curious to actually see these in person as I currently play the MP 20 HMB’s and I do notice from the spec sheets some loft differences. For me personally I can live with the size of the HMB’s (I play off of 6 HC), but will be interesting to see if there is a performance advantage of the 225 vs the HMB’s (other than size). Thanks again for yet another great video. Well done as always! 🏌🏻👍
Agree my exact comments. I got myHMBs in spring 2020 and have dropped from 8 to 5 Hcp. Once I started playing them and how solid they felt I never notice the size being too large. I’d be interested to see the 7 HMB bent 1 degree strong and the 225 1 degree weak so they were equal and then do a comparison of ball speed, carry, height and land angle. Ian says 17 yards farther than his 7 but the lofts is more of a 6.5
Hoping to change my irons this coming year - currently using very old MX23s. These will definitely be on the list.
Great review. You guys are the best. Happy New Year!
I am in love with my PXG`s....but now I want these. Less offset and a smaller profile. Watching this channel is hard on the credift card haha!
Low key, Ian's ball speed is way up from a couple of seasons ago. Goes to show his off season speed training has really paid off. Another great review. Thanks, I'm tempted to go do another fitting at TXG to replace my current Mizunos.
Great review gurus! 225''s look tremendously good. Would love to see a comparison between these and Taylormade P790's.
Just ordered a set, cant wait!!!
Happy holidays fellas. I know you guys are busy - but I would love to see a mizuno pro 225 vs mizuno fli hi driving iron comparison!!
Ben Hogan PTX pro is the butter zone. Compact hollow head with normal lofts. I'm a 7 handicap and use the Ben Hogan players combo set. Icon blades PW-8, PTX pro 7-4.. loft starts at 46° wedge and goes up +4° loft up through the entire set. I keep my yardages in wack and get all the forgiveness in the world on longer shots!
Just went through a fitting and the final two were this and P790. My numbers for both of them are pretty much identical. Went with P790 because it was a little more forgiving IMO, but man, it felt so nice when you hit it.
I’ve been playing the OG ‘08 AP2s since they were new. I haven’t been able to find anything I liked in the past few years since I’ve been looking. Hit the mizuno 225 yesterday. I was thoroughly impressed with the looks, and most importantly, the FEEL. I’ve tried many other hollow irons and none of them come close to the feel of this mizuno, in my opinion. I never thought I’d be able to move away from fully forged into the age of iron tech. I thought I’d have to give up. The mizuno 225 renewed my faith in modern iron tech. Do yourself a favor and TRY THESE. You won’t regret it.
I have the same OG AP2s with 6.5 Rifles and love them. I've actually put them in the bag again recently from PW to 6 iron and use the older model HMBs 6&5 at the top of my bag - I'm now going to order these newer models also.
I’m a big mizuno fan, been swing jpx900 forged for years now. Love the feel so never considered switching till now. Would like more distance, getting up in age so I feel like I have to work harder to keep up with my expectations. I can’t wait to try the 225!
Hi Craig. I'm getting up there in age also and am going to be buying some new irons also. question is, when you say "getting up there in age" how old are you? I'm 57 and am wondering if I should go more towards a game improvement iron. I want to put everything into account before the purchase. Thanks and Cheers!
Wow. What an awesome review! Well done.
I have a 4HB and got fitted for these. Crushed the fitting 7 iron at 95 club speed and 190+ total… after that I ordered 5-AW for my 7 club set instead. That way all I need is a good touch with the 54 and 58 wedges to attack greens.
Gotta work on the ball striking this off season, I’d like to feel the pure strike more often.
Playing the Taylor May 7 60s right now. Getting a little battle warned I think I might try these give them a try after this review thanks guys.
Heading back home to Niagara from USA during the holidays /New Year.. I'll definitely need to make a fitting appointment at TXG when home to hit these, can't wait!
I was thinking about JPX 921 Forged, but maybe 225 instead??
Wow you guys are only a little over 4 hours away from me. I think when i get ready to get some new clubs im deff gonna come up to yall to get a proper fitting!
If you want a set of Mizuno Pro 225’s, good luck. I ordered mine 8 weeks ago and still waiting for them to even be built! May see them in 3 months!
I adore these irons. They look very much like blades, but give you the benefit of hollow body construction. Just placed my order for 5-PW. Now have to decide on wedges - Miura maybe :)
Definitely trying these
I used to play Ping i15's and switched to Mizuno Pro 225's about 9 months ago. For my 7 iron, i15's were a 155-160 carry with a low/mid ball flight and the 225 is a 160-165 carry with a high(er) ball flight. At 56, I dropped from a solid 8HC (prior 5 years) to a solid 5HC over the last 9 months I've owned the Mizuno's. I did take two 1-hr iron lessons prior to getting the Mizuno's but I honestly think the drop in HC was due more in part to these (10yr) newer irons. I actually loved the look at address of both sets of irons but the MP225's are damn sexy looking in the bag. When I was getting fitted on an open range with a flight scope, I compared it to the P790's which to me had a weird click or vibration I wasn't getting in the MP225's... maybe they were off center hits but thats the whole point when you're not scratch (yet 😎). As a side note, I took lessons from my local club PGA pro who played MP221 blades but had MP225's for his 4 and 3 iron. That probably biased my decision to choose the MP's over the P790's as well.
Interesting to hear the validation of the Champions Tour. What an enticing design.
OMG! Special Edition Black Ions just came out. I’m going for a fitting asap!
Well done reviews on both the 225 here and the 221, thank you. I’ve loved my jpx 900 forged for a few years now and am looking at these now. What I’m wondering is - as a 2 handicap player, do you think I might benefit in doing a combo 225/221 set or is it worth having the added forgiveness in a full set of 225s? I play about once a week and don’t always hit the center ;)
impressive results
I was definitely looking forward to picking up a discounted set of mp20 hmb to upgrade from my jpx919 hm, but I would love to see a head to head of mp20 hmb vs Mizuno pro 225 to see if it's really worth the extra money. I clearly don't care about size since either set will be much more compact than my hot metals
Please keep us updated if you end up taking them on the course Ian 🙌🙌
I have never liked hallow irons. This was the nicest sound I have heard on a video
You it’s are excellent. Your analysis is right on.
bought these after a playing the original hogan edge for years, club heads are about the same size but much better feel. the ping 525, t200, 790 were good but the 225's were the total package I was looking for. some have said they're not workable, I have no problem w/fade/draw/high/low.
Just tried out a 225 7-iron with the Project X IO regular flex shaft at my golf range. I have used Mizuno forged blades for years (MP-33 and MP-67) so have a high regard for their irons. But here's the problem. The 225 7-iron has a 30 degree loft. My current 7-iron has a 36 degree loft (Chicago Classics blades almost identical to MP-33s, forged in Taiwan, designed by Bob Evans who was director of production and director of tour operations for MacGregor Golf and president of his own company from 1987 to 1995) and my 6-iron has 32 degrees. I'm 80, a 16 to 17 handicapper, so my swing speed is nowhere near that of Ian or Matt. Did a fitting in June with Trackman. My best shot with my 7-iron was club speed 74.8, ball speed 100.6, smash factor 1.34, launch 22.9 degrees, height 81 feet, carry 137.3, total 146.4, descent angle 46.3. The 225 7-iron obviously went further. As far as I could tell just by sight hitting to a green with a flag, a good strike probably carried an additional 10 to 12 yards. I can't help thinking it might be nice to upgrade to a new high tech club like the 225 to get more distance. However, my conclusion was that it would not be worth spending $200 a club to change to the 225 irons, even if I had the money. To get those extra yards I can just take out my 6 iron. With a 32 degree loft, it will go high enough and have enough of a descent angle to stop on the green. Using a ball with good spin can also help. And finally, while I agree the 225 does not sound "clicky" I still prefer the feel of my solid forged blades and the sound they make with a good strike in the sweet spot. So for what it's worth, if you are just buying a first set of premium irons, the 225s (or 223s or 221s) may well be a great choice. But they won't work miracles. If you like the clubs you have, it may be better to know your distances and gaps and stick with what you've got. Especially if you're a stubborn old goat who just loves the feel and sound of solid forged blades.
I would have loved to see what difference a softer ball would have made as you fellows strike the ball so consistently when Matt mentioned the harder ball. Thanks for a great video.
From a looks perspective, I think Mizuno has taken after Sub70 699/Pro, Takomo 101, and Haywood Signature for the simplicity and clean look of the hallow-body iron.
The 2021 P790’s are gorgeous IMO
May finally have found a replacement for my cobra forged tour. Just need to check the offset isn’t too much.
Awesome review
Have the mp20 HMBs, scratch golfer. Like others have said, the only bad thing is the gapping. I have standard lofts on these and my PW goes 150, 7i 200. It’s a lot of guessing on the course for those in between distances, but the forgiveness is amazing. Also made me switch my wedges to 50, 54, 58 to get gapping correct for the scoring clubs. Still love them overall.
Had the same setup with HMB, switched to MB’s 6-PW as was getting shots of small tee peg going 15 yards further on occasion.
44 deg to 50 deg is still a big gap, though
@@JayDee28 HMBs PW is 46
Indeed. Same here, and never thought I’d switch away from fully forged. These clubs are MONEY.
"I don't know if I have been more impressed with an iron" that says everything.
I hit the 225s at a demo day and fell in love so I ordered 4-GW. Driver SS is 105-110. I know that’s not much to go on but I’m wondering if you have some suggestions on what SW and LW lofts I might consider (I’m keeping my options open on brand/model). With the 225 GW being 49 degrees, I’m thinking maybe 54 and 58?
It'll be interesting to compare the P790 and 225 side-by-side. The lofts are within 0.5° for most of the set. Can't wait to see RoboMatty have at it.
matty can’t, right hand only,
@@rpk4632 Hmm. He actually does quite well swinging right handed, according to several videos. Hits distances that are more like mere mortals!
@@ReedServices I would not describe his righty swing as robomatty…..
Brent: Michael Newton has a video out on this...Great stuff....
Play MP20 blades through 4 iron. Liked the HMB’s performance but could not get over how they looked. Really interested in getting the 225’s 5-3 and adjusting lofts for gapping. Can’t see the 221’s being so different in numbers over a year to justify a full swap.
Matty's point about scratch/single digit players looking at these and bending them weak is exactly where my mind went. I'm surprised more high end players haven't done this already...maybe these are the hollow bodies that will get people over the hump. I have a set of PXGs that I've bent weak, and I've really enjoyed the forgiveness....it's kind of like cheating, free ball speed on mishits.
For sure. I would love those in the 223 lofts.
My buddy just got a set of the PXG 0211 and is loving them. These new 225 have my mouth wate...yet I still love my Hogan PTx...
I wouldn't even bother bending them weak tbh, get your distance on haha much prefer hitting a 7 to a green 200 yards away than a 5
Then gapping becomes an issue when I'm hitting PW 150 and gap wedge 120. Distance control is way more important in scoring range than ego...
Wouldnt weakening them to traditional change the bounce too much?
First three PW shots;
1) 141
2) 141
3) 141
Consistency in scoring clubs + distance help in mid and long irons = “Take my 💵!”
Great review Guys...You hit on it with the spin....I believe a tweak of the lofts would work best for 9 handicaper and get closer to the clubs I have been using and use too...Thanks....
Just got fit for these today.
Would love to see a review of Proto Concept C01 and a comparison against these MP 225s
Ian, You seemed to hit The Tacomo 101's better with more spin than these. Would love to see a comparison between a less expensive vs the Bigger Name Brand PLEASE.
I got fit into a set of these at Club Champion. Literally tried every iron (of similar category) on the wall.
What'd it end up running you? Was looking at Club champion to do the same
These Mizuno's are very nice clubs but $1500+ a set is to steep for many avid amatuer golfers😳! Love to have a set but not at that price.
Good job guys on your review! 👍
I just hit them and it was awesome.
As a high single digit handicapper who plays enough to just about keep the rust off. This is exactly what I would be shopping for.
Well these just look lovely
Think I’ve just found my 2022 irons 😍
Ian, you were very effusive about the 225, that is great. I was on the fence about last years HMB or MMC, now glad I held off. BUT I think it would be informational if you hit the 223 Vs the 225 and give your honest assessment. Having Matt only hit 223 and not the 225, and you hit the 225 and not the 223, we can't get the best comparison.
They can’t, only the 223 is available in lefty. Maybe we can get Ian to give that comparison.
@@ottodawg9407 Yes that is what I am saying... Ian to hit both back to back and give impressions on feel and sound as well as share the data.
Be nice to see 921 forged vs these. Been playing those for a few years. Hard to think of chainging.
Would love to see these against P790!
223 vs 225 comparison video please please please!
I like the idea of a 225 or a P790 but my worry is in actual play what happens with the "flier" lie. The change in spin can be much more drastic from a more traditional iron, hence why the 221 and 223 exit. I tried to go for the more "poppy" iron and found due to playing lies my distance control could vary drastically, so came back in to the more traditional MP series. If Ian does put them in the bag would be interesting to hear his views and results but then again, does he miss a fairway!
Have you done an episode on wind, density altitude, and elevation change from launch to landing? Basically the factors OTHER than clubs that effect ball flight. Not sure if that’s within your video mandate.
Ian, I thing that Chris listening to you and taking notes. He has given you exactly what you asked for
You say they compare to P790 in spin and distance but how do they compare in feel to P790? Great video!!
Great video, I do find it odd that by Ian's numbers the gaps from 7-8-9-W are about 16 yards between clubs (189 yard - 7 vs 140 yard W) but for 4-5-6-7 it's only about 11 yards (220 yard 4 iron and 188 7 iron). Seems it would be better other way around. I appreciate Ian is probably not the target golfer for these clubs (being a low handicap longer hitter), but still an interesting outcome. Having said all that when it's time for new clubs I'll be checking these out for sure.
The 7,8,9,PW loft differences between clubs are either 4 or 5 degrees but 4,5,6,7 loft differences are only 2.5 to 3 degrees different. I don't know the reason why but that is typical of many clubs such as my JPX900 Forged which might just get replaced with a set of 225's!
What impresses me the most about the 225 is there’s nothing added in the hollow body like all the other ones and yet it sounds and feels better the other hollow body irons .
@Ian Fraser slumming it in the FootJoys!
Have you done a comparison of the Mizuno 225 versus the Rogue ST Pro? Would love to see that
I tested the original P790 and ended up going with the JPX forged. Couldn't figure out how to deal with gapping when hitting a 7 iron 210 yards, assuming that the distance would hold through the set. Would have hit the 4 iron past my hybrid and would have had about a 50 yard gap between the approach wedge and pitching wedge. The distance and feel of the 790 was absolutely amazing though, and assuming the Mizuno is as good or better.
I bought a Srixon driving iron 2iron 18 degrees , I think I am going to go a 225 2iron with 16.5 loft as my driving iron, I am hoping that it goes as good as it looks.
hi guys good channel>>>>>>one quick question in general:>>>> if on CG Quad the toe is down at 7i on 2.2 >> >>>>would you think I should bend it from -2 to -1 ? (mostly as well>>>in to out 7, face open 2.2 for draw) cheers.
I feel this sense of... Depression.. When there is more than a week no new TXG videos. I find myself hunting UA-cam like revisiting the refrigerator without finding what I'm truly wanting...... Desperate for the sweet taste of golf equipment and science
Have you done a head to head with the HMB and the 225? I hear you say how much you like the more compact head. I am leaning towards the HMB because the head is slightly larger. My ball flight is too high and would love to bring my trajectory down. Which model would be best to assist with that? I was fitted by Ping twice and I am 2* flat 2* strong with stiff flex and still too high. I am 48 and 5'4. Swing speed varies. Any suggestions on new irons for lower trajectory would be appreciated.
Mizuno always kills it
How would you compare them to the P770’s
Need to see the 225 vs the new cobra forged tec irons !!!
I want to switch from the JPX921 Hot Metal Pro to these. Would that be a good choice??
Hello Ian, can you make an iron comparison between Mizuno pro 225 x Taylormade P770?
Please review the 2 iron fli hi driving iron they came out with!!!!
U guys should fit Steve from Good Good. He has the potential to be the best in the group. So matching up the best with the best only good good things can happen😉. Then txg vs good good 18 hole match needs to happen!
If the pitching wedge goes the same distance as yours, and the seven iron goes 15 yards more, aren't you leaving overly large gaps between your scoring clubs?
