The 223 is one of the finest irons made. Really soft and a joy to play with.

coming from the MP line, and having played the 223 for the season, I can confirm they do not have the typical uber soft feel from MP mizuno irons. Fortunate for me I hit the middle of the face regularly, and when I do they are noticeably more firm than what I came from.

Fitting is fine but they do sell you on the most expensive shafts on the market, and the build quality is not great. Just my opinion.

Was just reading up on these further. The 223s are constructed like the blades PW-8. Just a little thicker and a tiny bit more offset than the 221 counterparts. Then they introduce the chromoly and flow microslot 7-4, hence the pop in ball speed/distance when you get to the 7 iron and beyond.
Definitely for a better player catering to the higher lofts and spin on the short clubs and the extra ball speed and forgiveness in the mid to long irons, all within a compact, player preferred size.
Very cool set of irons that Mizuno is offering here. I have the MP-18 blades PW-8 and then. MP-18 SCs 7-4. Love the blades in the short irons. Can't beat the super consistent spin and carry numbers.
This set is exactly what I'd look for as I could use extra forgiveness/help/ball speed 6-4. Heck, even my 7 a little bit. Maybe blend the 225s starting at 6 or 5, and you have gradual, increased forgiveness where you need it as you progress through the set.
Well done Mizuno! And great review Ian and Matt. That's the key there. Get lofts and lies gapped appropriately. So cool to see.

The 8-W are 1025E instead of chromoly and do not have the micro-slot. It's basically a combo set that all looks like a single set.

    • @Mjwest23
      @Mjwest23 2 роки тому +3

Nail on the head. Constructed like the blades just a little thicker and a tiny bit more offset than the 221s. Then they introduce the chromoly and flow microslot 7-4, hence the pop in ball speed/distance when you get to the 7 iron and beyond, like Matt saw.
Definitely for a better player catering to the higher lofts and spin on the short clubs and the extra ball speed and forgiveness in the mid to long irons, all within a compact, player preferred size. Forgiveness where a better player needs it.
I think it's a great set and offering. Exactly what I like. May even blend the 225s in the 6-4 or 5-4 of needing a longer club face for forgiveness and a little more ball speed.

I’d absolutely love to see a head to head to head of the MP18, MP20 and the new Mizuno Pro Series in all its models. See how each model has evolved over the last few years.
Keep all lofts at manufacturing standard and just do a straight out comparable.
It’d just be such a funky set of reviews to watch.

Companies probably pay these guys to NOT do that and blow the lid off the whole equipment industry lol. If you think iron tech is progressing THAT much every two years I have a bridge to sell you. For sure every now and then a leap is made and tech evolves. But every model isn’t as different as they make it seem.
Golf marketing is really 99% bs lol take it from a lifetime hi level player. Find what feels and performs the best for you and stick with it. Don’t worry about keeping up.

This thing with the PW would be perfect for me. I get a lot more out of the pw and 9i than I feel like I do with the longer irons. My gapping has been tough to work out because I often get huge gaps between wedges and lower lofted irons. Honestly, feel like this set was designed for me!! Wish I had the funds to get them 😅

Excellent observation regarding the step change in tech and how it impacts gapping. So true , and quite common in modern sets. Every body tests 6 or 7 iron - so they are now the place for jump. But exactly as you say here, a 7 iron at 2,000 yards and a wedge at 110 - leaves a bit of a problem somewhere in the set.

Based on the design differences between the 8-PW and the 4-7 it seems like the stock loft package needs some adjusting to get proper gaps.

Faster swing speed players is probably a no brainer for some loft adjustments it would appear. Once I get mine in that is the first thing I'm doing is a loft/lie/gapping session for sure. Curious what slower swing speed gaps look like for this set. Likely smaller gaps between the short and mid and might not need any adjusting there.

Just went for a fitting and was hoping to get fit into the 223's. Thankfully I hit them surprisingly well. It came down to between the 223, and the jpx921 HM. I hit both of them almost identically. Had a tiny draw with the 223, and a bit more backspin, and just only 5 or 6 yrd shorter distance then I did with the jpx921 HM. I did hit the HM a bit straighter, with only a slightly bigger dispersion then I had with the 223. Both look and feel amazing. After about a 15 minute debate between the two I went with the 223 since that tiny bit of draw I had with those could actually be a bit more playable then a straight shot all of the time. The 5 or 6 yard difference isn't such a big deal since that can be made up easily with a slightly harder swing if needed anyway.

I know you’ve carved out a nice place for yourselves but I believe you need to be looking more into outdoor fittings on grass and Trackman. Trust me I’ve put in the time with foresight, Trackman and flightscope. Indoors and out. Currently the leader in the clubhouse is Trackman in my professional opinion

I have not played with anyone who hits a 185yd 7 iron. Why would you want a 7 iron to go that far? Gapping? I get what your saying and maybe it because I am north of 55 years old but wow. I hit my 7 iron 165 yd max 8i 154 yd, 9i 142yd PW 127yd I have a consistent 12 to 15 yards between clubs all the way out to 4 iron at 205. Then it’s 7w, 5w Driver. Seems to me the issue is at the top end of the bag not the bottom. I know guys are younger but a 245yd 4 iron why would you need a driver then. The game is getting too long. Just my opinion but it is really turning into a game I don’t know anymore. In my day 125 yds in was where the game was played now it’s opposite.
