Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl - DS vs. Switch Graphics Comparison

- Опубліковано 18 лис 2021
- With Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl coming to Nintendo Switch, we put Shining Pearl head-to-head with the original Pokémon Diamond on Nintendo DS to see the graphical differences.
Pokemon Diamond and Pearl were originally released for the Nintendo DS in 2006 in Japan and 2007 everywhere else. Now, 10 years later, they’re being remade on the Nintendo Switch as Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the original games and the 25th anniversary of the Pokemon series.
Pokemon Diamond and Pearl are the 4th generation of Pokemon games and take place in the Sinnoh region with the two cover Pokemon being Dialga and Palkia. For this video the Nintendo DS version of Pokemon Diamond was captured on a New Nintendo 3DS XL at 720p, and Pokemon Shining Pearl was captured on a Nintendo Switch at 1080p.
Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are available now on Nintendo Switch. The games are available separately as well as in a double pack. If you purchase the game before February 21, 2022 you can claim the Pokemon Platinum style outfit for your character as well as a Manaphy Egg through the Mystery Gift function. If you’re looking for more Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl videos, we’ve got you covered here on GameSpot:

shoutout to the guy that cleans the pokemon center's floor, that floor looks spotless
Literally mirror polished.
no problem,I did my best
That they included the rendering issue as a texture is such a nice attention to detail props to ILCA
@@theakiwar9118 it works like this, they have an invisible camera in the floor and they project the camera onto the floor
The work here is really well done. Wait until you see water in the caverns.
Due to how the DS' interpolation worked, it had troubles rendering certain surfaces and textures not divisible in squares, so these came off as slightly deformed; one example of this is the wallpaper in the player's room in the original Diamond, Pearl and Platinum games, where its stripes end up becoming jagged the closer they get to the roof (when played on the original hardware).
I'll give it some credit. The water in this game actually looks real.
actually, water is very inconsistent in this game, 0:52 for example looks different than 4:59
@@Seba20901 I hate to break it to you…but that’s how water works in real life. Water in a running river/stream is going to look different to that of a lake.
@@Seba20901 Have you ever been outside in nature? Please go to your local river and lake and look at the water. They will look different due to currents and differences in mineral contents
And you still didn't saw the water in the underground man. It is breathtaking.
Who cares if it looks real or not? XD
The water in this game just looks sooooo breathtaking, and that’s a huge plus.
You know I’m actually impressed. This looks so much better than the first teaser trailer.
Because that first trailer is so terrible, so it’s obvious the game would look better
@@gnadov4506 Thays not always the case. Look no further than Sword and Shield. But ILCA really put effort into this remake
Because the trailer was made in alpha period of game developement
It still looks terrible for a company as large as Pokemon and the character models take away from the old flare they had
@@redlfclegend24 its not because of the power level of nintendo switch
Im one of those people that really wasn't thrilled with the chibi style in the remakes, but seeing them side by side does make me appreciate the 'nostalgic' design a lot more
I love the DS charm. Actually I love the charm of the early 2000’s games in general.
Agreed
It was late 2000s, not early at all
@@MsMvsc late 2000s? Like 2080?

Do you not understand how numbers work?
On one hand I like how the kept the DS feel in the graphics, but then again we waited 15 years for remakes and this is it? They graphics look very similar to the DS and pretty much add nothing new. Sinnoh is such a cool reason to see and expand on with better graphics and we get a copy paste
Wish they would’ve made the style more like oras the chibi looks kinda out of place without the old graphics
Both games look great, just drastically different styles which is cool. Just wish the remasters added a lil more new content
Different styles???? It’s literally 99% the same style just with more zooming in and HD graphics. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing but where tf you seeing “DRASTICALLY” different styles?
This is not a remaster.
@@RightWingRadioShow it's a reboot then?
@@Ejaz100 they remade the game.
@@RightWingRadioShow then it's a remake
The game looks a lot better then it did in the first trailer. The water especially looks real smooth and realistic
looks like unity water
@@dumbdumb572isn’t that a good thing 💀
Looking at Scarlet/violet, I kind of wish that they stuck to this kind of artstyle. Their 2d games never felt as empty as the new ones do.
Or if they just went full crazy and released a new pixel art pokemon game. That would be pretty sick honestly
tbh the issue is less with the use of 3d and more with the artstyle and polish. their 3d games lack a lot of the charming elements of 2d games, or lack the visual polish that makes the games look clean. both of those would be solved with more development time or more powerful hardware
Original art style still looks better, wish they kept it but ofc add every other new features and pokemon etc
I'm an og fan but come on.. The chibi art style looks amazing. My only negative thoughts are that the animation to show the surprise or happiness is a little show on the chibi characters. But it's about as slow as it was on sword and shield so I forgive them. And this was a tiny team that worked on it. I think they did really well considering the shit show we got from sword and shield lol
@@Kewlausgirl so fucking true
@@Kewlausgirl nah I hate the chibi style, looks like a baby's first game
The og pixel style has sOUl
Chibi style is not a problem, problem is the art directions, look like a lifeless mobile game. Zelda awakening did right with chibi style.
Nah, it looks way worse, too outdated.
looks very nice on DS
Great comparison!
Would still be a much better game if the models are like Lets Go..
As much as I hate Kanto at this point Let’s Go’s graphic style made me really wanna be there. It was gorgeous. They could’ve made that their remake look but alas.
I highly agree.
@@ZikenX alas means ?

Is it crazy to think I thought 4th gen looked like how it released today when i was a kid ? I so baffled to remember the graphics as they used to be. I haven’t played it in along time. I’m so happy the rereleased it on switch
I have started played Pokémon Diamonds on my N3DS since 2021
I have so much Childhood Memories Playing Pokemon Diamond Version ❤️
It was my first Pokémon game, I got it Christmas of 2006 along with a Black DS Lite. I still have my copy of Diamond.
ORAS and HG/SS were the best remakes
Fire Red the OG
ORAS and Let’s go were very interesting remakes, taking advantage of the new hardware and graphics updates as well as updating things in a drastic way. while this one is basically “well I don’t have the game for DS anymore so I can play this remastered port”
I mean I’m playing it and having fun but I would feel the same way if my platinum cartridge still worked
It’s crazy to be going from playing SMT 5 to this art style and see it on the same system.
because one is dystopian Japan, dark and gritty and this is chibi sweetness? or are we talking graphics? Not hating, just asking.
@@MuesliToGo The visuals graphics wise.
@@MuesliToGo this game could definitely be run on a 3ds
Agreed. Like that game oozes with style, and there we have pokemon.
you are comparing apples to pineapples
@12:18 - Chimchar uses pelvic thrust of death!
I prefer the ds
Go play it then!
I have so many fond memories of this gen. I had pearl diamond and plat. Hundreds of hours on all 3. I still remember trying to get a good garchomp
Feels like I'm playing through Diamond again, nothing really here to keep my interest...
If you've played Diamond and/or Pearl, you've played BDSP. Though, the revamped underground is a neat addition I guess. I'll still stick to Platinum.
(Same with ORAS and Emerald, though in all honesty, these games had more going for them)
That chibi style is actually growing on me...
There is more detail in a 32 bit sprite than a 3D model in HD
I'm probably in the minority I know but I am really enjoying it so far. I put so much time into the original Pokémon pearl and it was nice to experience the nostalgia again. The underground is great fun too and I love what they have done with it so far. My only slight annoyance was that the poketch looks EXACTLY the same. I think a slight update on that would have been good. But otherwise I'm enjoying it, nice to have the random battles back again for a change.
DS version won
No!
DS version for the win!
Effort over laziness!
DS version goes raw😤 we waited 15 years for remakes/graphics that could be run on my 7 year old cousins snot covered 2ds
For me the music on the original is much better
Are there any major differences besides visual between the DS and Switch version?
I like the original look more. It looks more mature for some reason, probably the color pallet. I remember going to New Moon island and Giratinas cave, it looked so moody on the originals
The remake was developed by ILCA, Inc. The usual Pokémon developer Game Freak was working on Pokémon Legends Arceus at the time. ILCA is acronym for I Love Computer Art.
if the game is just the same, then i'll just pick my old 3ds and play platinum again.
Yeah I'm debating the same. Wiimmfii has trading and the wifi plaza which surprisingly has people playing on it.
No point in getting it if none of my friends have it because then I won't have anyone to trade with anyway (and why pay for GTS?)
Might as well pickup platinum renegade since it has modded quality of life improvements and play on my DS.
@@1creeperbomb is renegade platinum worth it ? I was thinking about playing this one.
@@felipebattisti8507 never tried it but everyone tells me its pretty fun because you get much more freedom to explore the region and all the slow stuff has been sped up.
@@felipebattisti8507 Game is harder but you have most of Gen 1-4 Pokemon that are catchable.
you get a few extra encounters in the remakes but the trainer rosters are literally the same(aka flint, the fire elite 4 trainer, has only 2 fire types)
I'm confused, they booth look like games from 2007.
that's Nintendo games for ya, mostly Nintendo owned games are kinda like a game from before 2010, Metroid Dread is like a mobile game or a game from 2001 lol
@@ryndaman2855 But there's no denial Sword and Shield looked way better than BDSP

Well this should be interesting. I stopped playing with White2. Great game I had all the Pokémon though. I had a lot of friends we traded many Pokémon. I even had a Black Rayquaza and still do if I can find that copy. I also had Platinum with the Pokédex complete as well but I sold that one with my DS. I hope I can find white 2 and transfer my Pokémon if at all possible. I love my Darkrai Mewto and Garatina flying from platinum
Can't believe Pokémon did better than gta. the world truly upside down
ILCA are legends
If you're referring to the Trology they'd just released, than it's an unfair comparison. The GTA trilogy is a remaster whereas these games are remakes built from the ground up.
The GTA Trilogy is a disappointment :( It looks just like the PSP games.
6:30 I swear the way my Chimchar shaking left and right in Brillant Diamond is driving me insane. Stop. Moving!!
I got the dual pack, so keen to dive into this again I played this back in the day on the ds enjoyed it then have always been a fan of pokemon games hard not to, has been around for as long as I can remember 😀
How did that go?
I enjoy the chibi look and the new graphics, but i get that it was kinda unnecessary if they didnt do something dramatically different like sapphire and ruby. People want to explore with a overall new look, i did enjoy this tho
My only complaint are the characters. They shoulda put more work on them to make them look more like pokemon sword ⚔️ and shield 🛡 or like pokemon lets go
it clearly shows that you didn't know about classic pokemon
@@LazypunK07 here we go again. For your information since red and blue I have played all the Pokemon games. And know all of them. But Im not even thinking starting an argument with you. To be a remake the characters don’t look too good to me. They could do better. Or you just gonna tell me pokemon lets go is not a remake from a classic? And it looks way better thAn this one.

I initially thought that I would hate the “Chibi style” and that it would ruin the graphics for me.
On the contrary, I think this game is just gorgeous. And seeing it side-by-side with the original makes it so obvious that we still got a HUGE graphical improvement, even with the style choices.
Man i remember all these ost’s ❤❤❤
The music goes HARDEDDD
so i can play this awesome game with this graphics in nintendo switch ? wich pokemon is the newest ?

Overall, despite the "cute chibi" style. Think this game looks good.
Graphically resembles ORAS. This game could have even come out for the 3DS.
The 3DS would be this but with crazy jagged edges. Also ORAS has style and this has none

I wanna see a Pokémon Silver/Crystal remakes
But there is
A Pokémon Silver remake for the switch would be great. It is my favourite Pokémon game.
@@antoniomatias307 there was like I think but for the 3Ds I think the soul silver I believe but I mean for the switch maybe for that reason we might not see it but it would be cool
@@LonelyBoy94 mine too, that was my favorite generation at least for the starter Pokémons but being able to beat it and then going to the kanto region.
So nobody's going to talk about how Barry just ran on water in the intro
Hol up. Did you say 14 years apart? Jesus Christ
Looking at the new one alone, it does seem a little awkward... But in direct comparison, the pixel art work in the environments of D/P really wasn't very good. HG/SS's pixel art and colors especially were a lot more cohesive looking, so you'd have to do more in a remake to beat it than was needed here.
Anyone know how many pokemon you can catch without trading from other games?
How did you capture DS footage?
ds or 3ds capture card, people modded the console (hardware ) to add a capture card

@@polishedrelish yeah they had to or else they wouldnt have been able to record 3ds game footage
This game looks a lot like link's awakening(switch version). Maybe it's build on the same mechanic? It does have a lot of in depth conversation though.
i think link's awakening is made in unreal engine while BDSP is made in unity
Disappointing that it’s not more like ORAS with original content and a new Endgame. Of all the games that could’ve used a revamped Endgame with the mythics incorporated it was this one.
After playing some Brilliant Diamond, the game actually looks nice and atmospheric. But I've also been noticing some minor graphical issues as well, mostly jagged edges on the models and in the Eterna Forest battles, you can kinda see the forest floor textures tiling a little. I wouldn't say it dampens the experience too much, but it does feel like it could have used a bit of extra polish for these little things.
I think these days, 2d and 3d are just two different styles. But I'd love to see more 2d games get 2d remakes. But in Pokemon's case, it'd be nice to just get a port of Black and White games, I loove the animated pixel art!
Wish the new one had more detail still a nice upgrade 🙃
The original looks more realistic. Thid looks like a boardgame with toys on it.
I don't have any of these games, should I buy the ds version or the switch one? Diamond is for 45US$ and Brilliant Diamond is for 70US$ (I live in Brazil so the prices are a little bit higher than in the USA haha).
I can't take the rival or any of the gym leaders seriously looking like this.

I hate how faithful they are to the original like ive played gen 4 a billion times i dont wanna play it again just in 3d wish they added new story/content maybe new forms etc..
BDSP are the first Pokémon remakes where the original already used 3D Models in the overworld (buildings etc.)
My only issue with the graphics in the remake is that they look so washed out. It feels as if there’s detail missing.
Also Bdsp turned things way easyer... cof cof afection system/forced exp share cof cof... the ds games where way more challenging (only exception is Cinthya is way harder in the remakes)
not my favorite art style, but hey, its pokemon, am gonna play it anyway, hah
loved the pokemon franchise, can't wait to get at least one of these fantastic titles
70 pokemon I caught in the game
Atleast they did the music right
We just gonna ignore Barry causally running on water? Ok
Game Freek did a bad remake. Just compare Pokemon Ruby with Omega Ruby and you'll see that the characters have been redesigned and aren't those awful Pockets. To tell you the truth, the 3DS game seems to be better than the Switch one in terms of design.
I have been playing Brilliant Diamond a lot recently and have been feeling a bit underwhelmed by it but after seeing just how faithful it is I'm actually quite impressed.
The art style isn't my cup of tea but I can't deny how much the original has aged and how much cleaner it looks now.

Even though I’ve grown extremely fond of the over world graphics, the stylistic differences are much more apparent during the battle scenes. This is more of a nitpick than anything but I think it would’ve been cool if they used that old school design choice where the Pokémon were on those circular patches of grass or whatever it would’ve saved them all the hassle of making backgrounds of different locations which for the most part they didn’t
I disagree tbh, the in-battle backgrounds are imo one of the few times the game looks actually decent. This game's already trying to be way too faithful in areas it shouldn't as it is, and the game definitely suffers for it. At least let the battle scenery look decent
they did that with xy and oras and it didn't look that great imo
