  • Dr. Kantor gives a definition of arthritis of the hip and how osteoarthritis affects people of all races and ages. There are dozens of conditions related to arthritis such as degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis), post-infections in joints, trauma to the joint and inflammatory conditions (rheumatoid, gout, lupus). Most patients who have a main diagnosis of arthritis ultimately end up with a hip replacement. Cartilage in the hip joint starts to deteriorate over time and sometimes chunks shed to expose bone underneath. Ultimately, very little cartilage remains leading to a "bone on bone" hip joint. Bone spurs can often develop, impeding your range of motion and comfort. Surgery is not the first step. Dr. Kantor steps through non-surgical treatments - medications to proactive changes in your activities to massage and acupuncture. None of these options can "cure" the disease though. Curing means surgery -- hip replacement. Treatment varies depending on what stage you are in with the arthritis. Dr. Kantor gives an overview of the arthritis ladder of treatment options developed at DHMC, starting with the treatment that has the least risk, to non-invasive options moving to more invasive options with joint replacement at the top of the ladder. Frequently asked questions are also reviewed about hip replacement surgery: what does the replacement involve?; what do the replacement components look like?; what are the benefits of surgery?; when is the best time to get a hip replacement?; how long will a hip replacement last? (including outcomes data from other patients); information about implant manufacturers; how will my implants be attached to my bones?; what will my implants be made of?; where is the incision (what approach will you be using)?; advantages and disadvantages to each approach. Plus, Dr. Kantor gives more specifics about the minimally invasive surgery anterior approach for hip replacement. The anterior approach allows the surgeon to not cut any muscles, which means they do not have to repair them, meaning less pain, faster recovery, infrequent dislocations and no dislocation restrictions. He also walks through outcomes from patients by the different types of approaches including: length of stay, time on crutches, time on narcotics and getting back to work.

With the NHS in the state it's in, the chances of being referred for total hip replacement are slim indeed. I am in a position now where the hip replacement I had nearly 10 years ago now is starting to wear out and my mobility is greatly reduced and I feel like my hip will give way every so often. My g.p. knows all this, but has yet to get me referred, despite my asking.

G'day and greetings from Tasmania Australia a very articulate and informative talk. I am 63 yo and I have two total knees done and now I am possibly looking at a left hip replacement, I have suffered rheumatoid and osteoporosis arthritis for a very long time, currently I have taken my orthopaedic surgeon's and had a cortisone injection in the hip to see if the pain could be coming from my back which I also have arthritis in. I learnt a lot from this and I thank the Doctor for putting this on the Webb thank you again . Kind regards John Kinnane

My grandfather died bone cancer. His wife (my grandma)had back surgery rheumatoid arthritis and her hands half paralyzed. My father refused back survery but had hip. My hip is scaring so bad and has slowly when young but now since started working as man I don’t think being young and considering it’s a signal for better posture or something body teaching.(always listen to the body and soul) I was young and didn’t know my fathers side background (divorce)and afraid now suffering the noise in hip is now worse and sounds so nasty and more space. But yea inside looks like a coconut 🥥
When I was younger my leg pain was so bad I was basically hospitalized bedridden which came with fever and my eyes watering so bad but that was thought mixture growing pain but actually getting that now still while but when walking like my hip faster than my toes. But it’s every like back of heel sometimes it becomes so sensitive I can’t put no weight on it and I’m limping if I even can. Now a days I have to get a doctors note but it’s like a bear or lion when comes and sometimes the foot thing can stay away for years and sometimes closer. Then of course back I can’t sit anywhere or drive cause the pain or asking a gf to drive and my family is nascar fans. Yea my uncle had back surgery also and both him and father went college and does mostly desk work(main job at least)not sure what would of done but reason why talk abou cause ignored so long sees the list is def not just one thing but possibly genetic. I try to study my way out thinking maybe body interested in bones but def think should do a x ray and find out about hips now. Thank you for the lecture hoped helped someone maybe look earlier but I know not much able to be done and scary when young and time when finally independent as adult is so rushing and the world don’t wait.

Oh it’s horrible all the joints in every part is horrible and then you’ve got your nerves being pulling in you getting strains and tightness in your games so much it just feels like there’s somebody else in your body trying to rip out of it . I also have scoliosis with osteoarthritis and a few of the things on top now which is not great like I said everybody is different you get different types and then if you’ve got other disabilities on top of that that’s not helpful either it’s not so great that you’re suffering 24 seven

Vety good details, but sad only a doomed story of just managing symptoms and the disease progression that results in death of the body part and surgery. Though I honor every doctor on earth, recently, I ve found many limitations in your system. Some people have cured hip artheritis and reversed it, much like cancer that you all claim that cant be reversed. With this much investment in complex research, it is sad that people have only a few options. If you youtube how to reverse this, you ll find some. Whether they work or not worth getting to know.
