45 years ago on this day, Weather Report played one of their most iconic shows in Offenbach am Main, Germany. The show was filmed in its entirety for a broadcast of Rockpalast, a German music television program, and is one of the six professionally shot Weather Report concerts to receive an official release. Showcasing the band at the peak of their commercial success, the concert was filmed at the beginning of the 1978 tour of Europe, during which the group gave the audiences their first glimpses of Mr. Gone, released in September 1978. From the opening riff of Black Market to the thunderous synths of Birdland, the jazz-fusion supergroup proves why they're one of, if not the greatest fusion band of all time, and if you're not convinced, I advise you to sit back, relax, and give this a much-deserved watch. 00:00:23 - 1. Saw them in Santa Cruz, CA c.1976, tripped-out on local shrooms & some liqueur. Managed to get backstage and then (v. small) dressing room. Gibbered out the predictable, "You were so great!" and found myself gently rolled out to the hall.😅 From there I spilled out into the cool, fog-enshrouded evening. Great times never to be repeated...
UA-cam, with absolutely NO regard for genius, or the enjoyment of it; chose to put a freaking commercial break 3/4 of the way through Birdland. What a pile of capitalist dypschitts.
I've listened to this Birdland 100s of times over the last 47years. It still has the all the inspiration and hidden gems of genius and emotion that was Weather Report. This in particular turned on a generation music listeners to Jazz.
What an amazing power quartet they were at this point, with Peter and Jaco! Truly a groundbreaking band, and at the same time a fun, exciting and accessible band - they had the same kind of wide genre-crossover appeal as Bob Marley and the Wailers had around the same time. The take of "A Remark You Made" here shows just how solid musicians they were - none of them is just a sideman in that one, they are all up front and essential, it is like a chamber music piece where all four are key to the textures.❤ Thanks for uploading!
Thank you for uploading this concert! My favorite era of WR by far. Young and Fine specifically is one of my favorite songs of all time because of this recording!
It's great to hear where that amazing use of timpani on 'Word of Mouth' comes from. Peter gets a fantastic color by integrating it into his drum set the way that he does. Thanks a million for this fantastic upload!
This is the same year and lineup when I saw them at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor MI. I was already a big fan but I still wasn't ready for what I saw that night. The house lights went down, the stage lights came up, they came out on stage, took their places, looked at each other, nodded and they were off and running for over two hours.
I saw the 1978 Mr Gone tour at the Beacon Theater, NYC. We were totally blown away! The band was at their peak, along with the previous few years with Alex Acuna on drums too. Rarely is such a special band ever assembled. It doesn't get much tighter! Jaco doing the moonwalk... seriously?!! Good times when I was only 18. Thank you for this ❤🤗
I saw this band in 1980 in London, it was a fantastic show and they played Black market as an encore. I mean the whole album was the encore. I left that show a changed man and I have seen a lot of bands, the only other band that really got me was Steppenwolf, another great live show.
It’s only after 40 years I can really start to understand what they had going on. It takes work to really hear the continuum that runs through each piece… But it’s there. Every time.
First time I ever noticed - Mr. Zawinul's got at least one of the keyboards reversed so when he moves his hands on the keys to the right, he's actually moving down in pitch. Interesting.
1:44:33 Erskine sporting a fresh neck wax. It's a good start, but he really should've petitioned Zawinul for extra funds to cover waxing that entire torso. Good grief.
Here's a list of the first few that come to mind: - Come On, Come Over - Chromatic Fantasy - The Chicken - Birdland - River People - Punk Jazz He used one at most of his live performances.
And why is that? Because UA-cam compresses the file drastically. You have not seen the actual, uncompressed .mov files I have. There is some grain on that video, as is appropriate for the time period, yet none of that is visible on this UA-cam upload.
The band was cool but one musician stood out then and forever. Guess who it was? Never been a big fan of over use of electric piano voices. The rest is awesome.

Laura mcsheras dad was a pal of Rory Gallagher
He lived in a squat next door to jack Bruce.
Tony had polio
The 80's were the golden era of jazz fusion. It was a magical decade for this music.
Chyba 70 te bracie!
I was there,never will forget, R.I.P Jaco, Joe,Wayne..

QUE BANDA ❗👏🏾👏🏿👏🏻👏🏽‼️
Thank you for uploading this concert! My favorite era of WR by far. Young and Fine specifically is one of my favorite songs of all time because of this recording!
I'm glad you enjoyed this! Young and Fine is a great one, it's shame many of the songs on Mr. Gone are overshadowed by the Heavy Weather classics.
Simply WOW.Factor. Chemistry at best.
このメンバーになる前も良かったが、この4人組時代が最高だった。
曲も演奏も素晴らしい!
We are lucky to get to witness this! omg
Zawinal, hauling around TWO arp 2600's and a massive Oberheim + Fender Rhodes...Must have had a had a very strong roadie!
He had a whole crew
amazing upload!! one of my fav jaco performances with weather report and one of my fav weather report shows. thanks for uploading.
Золотой состав. Браво.

Miło słyszeć ten kultowy zespół na żywo ❤❤❤
Thank You for posting 🙏👍❤️
As Good as it will Ever Be!❤
This is phenomenal thank you for sharing!
She could sing every note
The explosions are fireworks!
What a joy to experience this performance!

A gift
I woke up every morning to laura mcshera singing every note
Thank you sooo much.
Absolutely the greatest band ever!
can't argue with that.
First time I ever noticed - Mr. Zawinul's got at least one of the keyboards reversed so when he moves his hands on the keys to the right, he's actually moving down in pitch. Interesting.
Please subscribe if you haven't yet. I post rare Jaco Pastorius and Weather Report recordings all the time, and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
Saw them at the Santa Monica Civic Center in '78 with Alex Acuna on drums instead
of Peter Erskine here. Great memory.
Iconic and fantastic
Wow nice vid of this band at its peak!
This is some peak Erskine. My goodness. And I don't just mean the sweater.
Thanks!!!!!
☝..simple EXCELENT..!😉👍👌💥regards from Budapest ❤🤍💚😊
Would have loved to see Jonas Hellborg play with Weather Report but he was off with John McLaughlin
The best
The explosions
Joe Zawinul and Jaco Pastorius - “Like two cobras in a very small cage.”
Very good description!
C'est vrai...n'oublions pas Wayne Shorter.
Merci pour votre travail de mémoire pour le grand Jaco, quel bonheur de revoir ce fantastique musicien
And laura mcshera
👌❤🙏

way above average
Fretted bass! Does anyone know when he used fretted on recordings?
Here's a list of the first few that come to mind:
- Come On, Come Over
- Chromatic Fantasy
- The Chicken
- Birdland
- River People
- Punk Jazz
He used one at most of his live performances.
@@JacoPastoriusArchive Thanks! How do you know he played fretted on those recordings?
@mattfoley6082 I listen. It's pretty obvious if you pay close attention.
Add Portrait of Tracy to that list.
Drumming is 10% talent. 90% cool lighting.
Spoken like a true lighting tech😂
You're delusional then.. you couldn't play for like 2 minutes how he's playing.
I could never understand her love
Then i heardeach note
I could never understand her love.
Other times. And NOW?
I met an irish girl who could sing shorterz solos
désolé, mais ce n'est plus net en qualité que mon DVD de ce concert ...

mad
Jaco's little finger is as long as my middle finger. You NEED big hands to master most musical instruments.
FACT
The band was cool but one musician stood out then and forever. Guess who it was?
Never been a big fan of over use of electric piano voices. The rest is awesome.
Wayne Shorter.
I don't disagree. I just wished there would have been more acoustic piano. Mix it up would have been awesome. @@JacoPastoriusArchive
I agree. Either that, or Fender Rhodes.
Morrocanroll ,but this one blows ,,
I woke up every morning to laura mcshera singing every note
