Nightfood: Born in Chicago (with Jaco Pastorius) [Live in San Francisco, 1986]
After checking out of the mental ward of Bellevue Hospital in September 1986, Jaco Pastorius moved to San Francisco to live with drummer Brian Melvin. During this time, the two played a series of shows around California, either as a trio with pianist Jon Davis or with Brian's jam band Nightfood. The tape you're listening to was recorded at The Stone in San Francisco, likely on November 16, and features what I believe to be some of his best playing that year.
This song-"Born in Chicago"-was originally recorded in 1965 by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band for their self-titled debut album and was later featured in the 1998 Blues Brothers sequel. The whole band is on fire here, but what really made me want to share this is Jaco's blazing bass solo starting at 05:02. Once you get past the muddy sound quality (and occasional fret buzz), you can hear, in my opinion, some of Jaco's most intense yet creative soloing of his later years. Unlike some of his other bass solos from the mid-'80s, this one doesn't recycle the same couple of licks, instead opting for a more creative approach without sacrificing speed. Also noteworthy are Rick Smith's tenor saxophone solo and Little John Chrisley's harmonica solo, which precede the bass solo.
I have both an audience recording (from which I sourced this upload) and a far superior soundboard recording of this jam session, both of which I really like. Let me know your thoughts, and maybe I'll share more in the future. Thanks for watching!
From The Stone (San Francisco, CA), probably 11/16/1986.

Jaco Pastorius: Slang (Bass Solo) [Live in Reggio Emilia, 1980]

In October 1980, Weather Report performed five shows in Italy. All of them featured great bass solos by Jaco Pastorius, but the song selection and variety of this one might make it my favourite. It was recorded at the second-to-last Italy date, which took place at the Palazzo dello Sport "Giulio Bigi" in Reggio Emilia, Italy, on October 27. This solo is full of interesting quotes and bass arran...

45 years ago on this day, Jaco Pastorius performed at the Newport Jazz Festival in New York City. This was Pastorius' first time performing as a solo act, and it would be followed by two performances at the Berliner Jazztage in November. The introduction isn't as explosive as you'd expect from Jaco. The first two bass solos- the latter of which starts with thunderous applause; who knows what he...

On May 25th, 1979, Jaco Pastorius held a bass clinic at the Guitar Institute of Technology (later renamed Musicians Institute) in Los Angeles, CA. The clinic preceded two festival appearances at the UC Berkeley Festival with Weather Report (May 26) and Joni Mitchell (May 27), and was taped by at least one attendee. The recording starts with a 7-minute bass solo, which borrows from Wayne Cochran...

On July 23rd, 1976, Weather Report performed at Jazz à Juan in Juan-les-Pins, France. Among a set of fusion classics was a 6-minute bass solo, one of the show's highlights. What makes this solo so unique is the rendition of J. S. Bach's "Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 903: I. Fantasia." Although this piece has been performed on keyboard instruments since the 18th century, a bass r...

Great post! :) I have the soundboard version of this gig, and I agree at least in part with what you said about Jaco's solo on this track. He does use a lot of familiar licks/patterns, but there also some new material in there and as you mentioned he plays with great intensity and focus. Definitely one of the better solos from his later years :)

This is brilllllllliant! So much groove and heart - really feeling the need to dance! I keep having to listen to Jaco's solo, it's that seriously good. My private wish is that he was the singer on this, as he'd have eaten that up too. The harmonica player is very good as well. So funny: At the very end, is that Jaco saying "Thank you" with his bass?!

I agree with you; Jaco's vocals would've fit this rendition. As for Jaco saying "thank you" with his bass, I'm not sure. I had never thought about it that way, but maybe that was his intention with the phrase. He played it often, seemingly for no reason. Thanks for commenting Carole!

This solo is full of interesting quotes and solo bass arrangements and is probably one of the longest solos of the tour. You might catch songs like "River People" and "Blackbird," though the most surprising of them all is The Beatles' "Fool on the Hill," which starts at 4:44. Jaco played, recorded, and quoted many Beatles songs over the years ("Blackbird," "She's Leaving Home," and "Here, There and Everywhere," to name a few), but these Italy bass solos are the only time I have heard him do anything from the Magical Mystery Tour LP. The latter half of the solo features playing to playback of Alan Hovhaness' "Symphony No. 2, Op. 132, Mysterious Mountain: I. Andante con moto," and a distortion-heavy rendition of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze," which had both been fully incorporated into the routine at this point. The most unusual thing about this solo is probably the playback of the "Crisis" bass line, which you can hear at the end. Jaco would perform all of the Word of Mouth album live in the following years, with the sole exception being "Crisis," so hearing this, even if it's just playback, is a treat. 1980 performances of "Slang" are, in my opinion, some of the most interesting, and this is further proof of that. Weather Report continued the tour in Yugoslavia, Central Europe, Spain, and the UK, before resuming the tour in Japan the next year. Sadly, the only tapes from the late 1980 shows to surface are from a Hammersmith Odeon show, which, as good as it is, comes from the less interesting end of the tour in terms of the bass solo. www.linktr.ee/jacoarchive

Yeah, Dirty Loops... they're... A lot. I can find any number of aspects of it that i genuinely respect and find interesting. And they're all phenomenal technicians on their instruments, no question. But all together, it just feels like they're throwing everything but the kitchen sink in there, and then they turn around and decide to chuck the sink in the mix too. It's a perfect example of what good musicians are impressed by vs. what great musicians are impressed by. These guys are phenomenal, but the overwrought nature of all of their stuff just ends up feeling like jazz bros trying to impress the cute girls in the front row, and making me wish I could hear the group they'd be if they injected some subtlety in there. THAT would be some really great shit.

45 years ago today, Weather Report kicked off the 19th annual Jazz à Juan in Juan-les-Pins, France. This was their second time performing at the festival, and the set consisted of songs recorded between 1974 and 1978 with one new addition; the blazing "8:30" / "Sightseeing" medley, which features Jaco Pastorius on drums. The band was at the top of their game, and this mostly complete cassette tape provides us with some fantastic live renditions. Weather Report's versatility is on full display with a setlist featuring everything from the thumping "Scarlet Woman" to a jam-packed rendition of "Teen Town." One of my absolute favourites, though, has to be "A Remark You Made," which features an absolutely stellar outro starting at roughly 8:37. As usual, the group also managed to fit in a bass solo and an improvisational duet featuring more brilliant interplay between Joe and Wayne. The bass solo-almost 10 minutes in length-features heavy use of harmonics, digital delay, and distortion as was usual, but also a short improvisation around Ornette Coleman's "Round Trip" similar in nature to a lot of what he played at the 1979 Newport Jazz Festival New York solo performance some weeks earlier. The solo spots are followed by "Birdland," which ends one of the finest Weather Report live recordings of 1979. Jazz à Juan would continue on July 17 with performances by The L.A. Four and the Concord Super Band. The group wouldn't play in Juan-les-Pins again until 1984, by which point Jaco was touring with his own Word of Mouth Band, and Peter Erskine was touring and recording with the jazz fusion outfit Steps Ahead. Overall, it's a really nice recording. I applied some de-clip and de-click, and now it's even better. Hope you dig it as much as I do!
