Great review Aaron. For those who would prefer a similar knife but larger, check out the Sedulo. The Sedulo also features a textured GFN handle and pivot lock. Cheers.
The washer system gerber came out with is awesome and it’s great to see them continue to use it. It seems this is a slightly better bugout with a few more features at similar pricing.
There we have it. I have been waiting on this review since you posted the short about that other Gerber model the other day. I was shocked to see Gerber release this out of the blue, and that for the first time seems to have listened to the community. A good plunge grind a sharpening choil and a blade that's not as thick as a railroad track. I'm pleasantly surprised and actually excited to get a Gerber folder for the first time in 10-15 years. Thanks for sharing and walking us through it. Is it T8 body screws also?
@@gideonstactical Thanks again 🙏. And let's hope they make a larger version of the Assert in the near future. The lightweight EDC community will certainly enjoy this smaller sub 2 Oz package. But at least Gerber got a pretty good blueprint now to work from. And if they polish up the washers and pivot area and make sure the omega springs are strong and consistent, that action will probably smooth out quite a bit. But does not seem like a bad first try at all.
I just received my Assert from Blade HQ for $120 and i love it❤The ergos are great and it disappears in my pocket, just like my mini-Bugout. But the full four-finger grip on the Gerber is what puts it above the Bugout in my book. Well done Gerber! Great video as always😊😊
I’m probably bias, but I can’t justify the price on the Gerber or Bugout when the Kershaw Iridium is so good. I understand the steel differences, but D2 is not a bad steel. I really just think it’s the Made In China vs USA thing and that is not a 100 dollar difference to me. Maybe I’m crazy, but after quite a lot of pocket time with the Iridium I have no complaints, and that’s incredible for $65.

100%. Poor old Gerber, it's become almost customary for many reviewers to give negative reviews for their knives. Good to see a balanced review - Gerber are finally getting better and better and deserve recognition for their effort. Have a great day.
I appreciate the comparison. I carry mostly sub 3 inch knives, and the Assert looks great. Also, i really like that Gerber put the Assert on their custom shop right away. It seems like a nice way to give customers options without starting with a ton of different color options going to retailers.
I agree 100% Aaron. These are too small. I have folders that range from 1. something inches to a little over 5 inches. I seem to always gravitate to 3 3/4" to 4" blades. The native 5 from spyderco in magnacut is 150 bucks, your favorite knife the manix 2 in SPY27 is about 165. I think those are both better options in better or comparable steel
Great job Arron, I am a huge Benchmade fan. I have 13 and 1 custom. I really like the new Gerber and it’s differences/ similarities especially the price. I am going to order 2 today. One for me 1 to give to my knife brother. Great video.

I was pretty stoked to see this. Gerber is staying competitive. There's a lot to like about the design and features of the Assert. For the price, it does seem you get a bit more in the way of features vs a Bugout, but people customize their Bugouts to high heaven. Will this allow for that, or are people going to buy these and put them to work instead of treat them like pocket jewelry? 😁

Great comparison review. I recently bought two Gerber knives ( Slimsada & Flatiron ) and am still on the “honeymoon” with them so I’m not ready to take on another Gerber knife just yet. But thanks for the introduction..!! It does look good.
Aaron I saw this review and I couldn't wait to get one,so I got it and I love it but sadly mine has a flaw and if the tooling is the same they should all have it, so I was opening it and closing it swinging style and I heard a ting,so when the knife is closed pull the axis bar back all the way my knife blade drops down and just barely hits the bottom stand off. I would definitely use the thumb stud. I like the Gerber knife. I’ll definitely have to look into getting it one day. Some of the things you mentioned on the pro side of the Gerber are the same things I found with the Kizer Drop Bear when it comes to the deployment of the blade. @gideonstactical The Drop Bear is great. You might also want to consider looking at the Kizer Escort. It's a bit bigger (3.3 inches) and has the same version of the crossbar lock as the Drop Bear.

Cool blade don’t like that cut out on the blade but other than that it looks like great competition for the bugout and she said she loves the larger organic gurth more especially when she’s riding it in her pocket 😊😅
On the other hand… the Benchmade pocket clip works well with ‘belt’ carry, rather than pocket carry. Depending upon what I carry on my right pocket, I often clip my knife into my belt.
So happy to be getting your videos in my feet again! Although, for whatever reason, this one didn’t pop up when it was released six days ago. That being said, I do hate benchmade because of the fact that they contract with “ law-enforcement” to destroy unlawfully seized weapons
I got small hand. So the extra size of the Gerber don't matter. It's more 'real estate' in my pocket. If I want a 'hard use' outdoor pocket knife, I will get a fix blade. The Bugout Mini makes for sense for EDC. I just deploy the blade, quick slice, disengaged the blade, and back in my pocket. I will not be spending fifteen minutes making feather sticks in the office.

Gideon Bro’ flicking a knife open or closed isn’t all that useful. Your reviews are excellent. I think you’re the leading knife reviewer in the world? Yeah. Do you want to review the Springfield Echelon brand new combat pistol competing with the Glock 17? Are you good enough with a pistol to do that? A whole lot of people considering the Springfield Echelon including law enforcement buyers would watch that video.
I hate having to carry my mini-Bugout in the neighboring “3” rule” city. Good knife, but the handle is too small for any real use. This Gerber may push both my bugouts out of my lineup.
Kershaw Heist functions well enough for $50-60. Same Axis style lock, but D2. 3.2" blade. 2.8 oz but as a result more solid than my Bugout. wrt the Gerber, I'd just get the Bugout it's far more boogie. I can see your arguments in favor of the new design in terms of fitting your hand and havinv a less delicate tip, but I wouldn't pay Benchmade prices for a company still in the stages of reclaiming its credibility.
any knife under 4 ounces is easy to carry, and they start to feel like a toy when they are under 2 ounces. I'd argue it's less safe because there's no weight to help it stay in your hand. There really is no argument for needing these lightweight knives in any capacity. There have been sub 2 oz 3 inch folders for a while. If Hikers or whatever really cared about not carrying 1 ounce (lmao) they could roll with a tiny paring knife or just use a breakoff razor blade
Small knives thrive when they are slicey and fidget friendly. I think it’s a bit of a miss on Gerbers part. If it had bearings I could absolutely see this being a popular urban carry. Keep the robustness and washers for knives that need them in harder use.

One of these days we’re gonna look on here and see Gideon running from a fkin’ bear! “Climb that pine tree, Gideon!” You can get away!
I hate having to carry my mini-Bugout in the neighboring “3” rule” city. Good knife, but the handle is too small for any real use. This Gerber may push both my bugouts out of my lineup.
Oh man!!!
Its like comparing old case to the old usa made old timers.
Mini Bugout??? Looks like a regular bugout to me just by the way it fits your hand.
Small knives thrive when they are slicey and fidget friendly. I think it’s a bit of a miss on Gerbers part. If it had bearings I could absolutely see this being a popular urban carry. Keep the robustness and washers for knives that need them in harder use.
I don't have much need for mini anything, but if Gerber did a XL version with a 4" blade, I'd buy it. Benchmade can pound sand
